There are a lot of different ways to interpret the word "best".
The 250R probably stands as one of the, if not THE, most significant atvs of all time. Next in line is the banshee, keeping the sport atv market alive while Honda/Suzuki ran and hid.
I won't pick one, but one of the three 450's currently being sold is the best factory race machine ever built.
For joe schmo the average rider it's got to be the suzuki 400 or the raptor 700.

My vote goes to the 250r on this one. It took a long time after the R came out for any of the manufacturers to make something that could compete for it in a real race. Sure, in a drag race the banshee and quadzilla had it, but when it comes to handling, i don't think even the new 450s still handle as well as a 250r with the same mods. It's a fun, well built and well designed machine that's withstood the test of time.

only one problem with that... the 1989 250R was WHITE! the 88 was red. the red, to this day is still one of the best looking quads made... its kinda like a bmw- it has that 'timeless' look to it...imo.
but you can put the red plastics and stuff on all yrs... i ordered the red for my 86 model...love that machine.
i think the 250R won this 'poll' by a landslide with the venerable classics holding close like the banshee, lt500, etc. of the next quintessential quads, the cannondal has to be mentioned for jolting the market with pure innovation, and then the YFZ has to get the title of nearest 'replacement' to the 250R..sorry honda, they did a better job... maybe in 2008 you'll get it right! we can have honarable mentions to the newer, all around quads like the 400ex, z400, raptor. but the one that will always be remembered even 5-10 yrs from now is still going to be the trx250R... it set the standard and in many ways remains the measuring stick for this segment of the market.

In my opinion there cant be a best sport quad. everyone is goint to react to a certain machine differently. One guy could like the snap of two strokes and say the TRX250R, another could like the smooth power of four strokes and say YFZ450, It all depends who you ask.
Thats like asking who the best musician is? youre gonna get a billion different answers.
For biggest effect on the sport and market the Honda TRX250R, in it's day. now I would have to say the YFZ450 had the same effect as the 250r as its bringing the racing scene back, im not saying the YFZ is the best of the 450's, because that would open another can of worms, but it was the first race 450's. The ATV with the best staying power and bang for buck was prolly the Banshee, it was around for almost 20 years, and im sad to see it go.

Hands down best ever is the TRX250R. All the current great 4 stroke bikes are only refinements on that design. The 250R can be built from the ground up to be all around better also. Yes you have to work on a 2 stroke.... Guess what? You have to work on performance 4 strokes also and that costs more!
The shee is great for duning and drags but that isn't all there is. The TRX can do about everything!

Right now it is probably the Banshee.
In time it may end up being the YFZ450 but it's only in its 4th year. Too soon to call it a classic.

Quadzilla and of course the Banshee...not that I'm biased or anything Although neither are extremely sporty stock. I think that would have to go to the YZF 450.

i vote banshee (cause it scares poeple to this day) for all time, for more modern stuff i would say yzf450r.
and be real, nobody that rides year in and year out has a stock machine.

yeah i agree, depends what you do with it,
for me i like the raptor 700, not just cuz i have it, but i got it cuz it was what suited me, i ride trails/ dunes , snow, mud, and hopefully some tracks some day, has reverse, efi and lots of power, handling has been great so far and will only get better....
if you havn't had a chance to ride one, check it out, i ride with guys that have yfzs,450r,400, 350's. and i always have them take the rappy for a spin and no one has been disapointed yet, infact they come back with a goofy smile cuz of all the tourqe they just experienced =)
but all those other quads are great 2.

I personally think the 2007 Polaris Outlaw 525 is the best sport quad outthere, but everyone was there own opinion.
I also like the 2007 yamaha raptor 700R, the banshee and the 2007 BRP Can-Am Renegade (but thats a utility quad)

I don't think fastest is nessicarily the best.
I think blasters are great, I also think banshees are good as well ( although they are basically just huge money pits ), as well as YFZs.
Just kind of opinion outside of that.

There are some in the GNCCs and other series that are performing well, in stock form. Ask around some XC racers, a lot of them would get on one right now. I know i would, but that price tag is scary.

For the best all around sport quad I am leaning towards the Raptor 700. They are fast, way more reliable than 2 stokes or 450's and they are fuel injected. Plus you can build them to be fast for way cheaper than anything else. Yeah the 250r was one of the orignals but the new quads have improved on the old technology and made it way better all around. I also love my DS650 it rides like a dream and is bulletproof, but is a pain in the a$$ to work on. I just replaced a piston last night and holy $hiz that thing kicked our arses.

The HONDA TRX250R (86-89)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The most reliable, easy to fix, jumps excellent, runs fast, and even faster than a Banshee if the right mods, and is worth twice as much, if not more, than it cost brand new!
