Ive ridden a 400xplorer now yeah for a utility quad (riding with warriors, wolverines, 400exes and other utilities yeah it doesn get up and go but it doesnt have a chance against banshees and the new fartcan 4stroke racers. Ridden one and ridden with it many a time. its not a bad bike but its not on the same level sorry.

its a fast bike no questions asked.
Because your bike is slow, and you're too ignorant to know the difference. Either that or you're intenionally trolling the board, which seems to suck other members in fairly easily. People like you dont deserve any attention, and certainly no race challenges because you are not worthy of either.

Going fast in a straight line is all well and good, if that is all you do. But where I ride, there are corners sometimes! Your overweight top heavy Polaris has a huge disadvantage, any time you have to turn.
I have ridden the 400 by the way...........
Posted by: reconranger
Didn't have time to read all the replies, but buddy of mine has this quad and I have ridden it quite a bit. It is not a particularly pleasant experience! The ride is rough and nasty, and the ergonomics are absolutely terrible. I don't care how fast it can go, when the frame is a dog it doesn't make any difference....
Posted by: reconranger
Actually, I only need 3 quads: 450R for the open desert, the 400EX for woods trails, and the Rancher 420 for technical riding in the mountains. Do it right, or just stay home and watch someone else play football on the weekends!

All it says to me is, your full of poop.
Brad, not knocking what potential the motor has. But listen to what he's saying and what he has. I know what you've done with your Preddy, and no doubt it's a fast SOB. But what he's saying, would be like me saying my Boss will smoke your Preddy all day. Point is, I know the only way I could smoke your Preddy is over my grill.

I couldn't agree more, they are the same person. He's talking about a 600lb 4x4 that beat sport quads like predators, 450's, and banshees...yeah right! Also I own a mostly stock Trailblazer with a 400 2-stroke motor like his and it runs side by side with my 02 Sportsman 700... and I know my 700 isn't even in the same ballpark as a predator.
you probably just dont know how to ride thats all. Ive been riding ever since the kawasaki bayou was introduced back in the 80's somewhere.
Ive gone through numerous bikes.
The xplorer runs with the sport quads in the short run but the long run the sport quads destroy it.
With credentials like the Bayou and Xplorer, I think we'll all apologize. Just hope I don't meet you or Xplorer out on the roads. I would be so embarrassed to get passed by your Geo and his Yugo. BR>

Actually........a 400 that could go fast in a strait line would be lowered quite a bit.......and have about 150lbs dropped from it......so it would corner decently......but then again, who cares.......
Posted by: Bradracer18
Mr. D.........what do you consider a lot of money.....and what do you consider fast??
I know that for not a whole lot of money......probably around 2-3k.......you can get these things into the upper 4's range in 300ft. Probably a little more money, and time.....and I know you can get around the low 4's......
Posted by: Bradracer18
You guys are far mistaken from what you think you are talking about........I don't think, as usual, you've ever even seen a fast 400L before. This motor is fast, trust me.
Choose "bikes"
There are a lot more, I just can't seem to find their websites. These can be made to be just as fast as the shees(well....a little slower).....but respectable.....with probably the same amount of money......
Posted by: Bradracer18
yes.....I understand this guy is a joke.......just standing up for the polaris motor......ya know me........could care less about this guy.......
Posted by: Bradracer18
Webopper........that is the site I was looking for.......I couldn't come up with it on google(tried az bad boys....and came up with some weird sh!tz).......
Scooter.......I understand completely what you are saying......I'm not defending this guy, nor his quad........but I was just stading up for the potential the 400 actually has.....that is all......you know.....just sick of the whole polaris's are slow, heavy turds........and everything else rules the drags........would rather see.......polaris's are slow 2nd place finishers......and the yamaha's are still in 1st......lol.........
Posted by: Bradracer18
yeah i understand......I just get tired of hearing about how fast the shee is.......and how nothing can compare to it.....well maybe not dollar for dollar.......but for time slips.....many quads are getting very close!!! Those rappys, and busa ds's are very fast.....

Still its not all that impressive that the new technology is finally catching up to a 15 year old quad design. At least I dont think so.

The xplorer would need to be heavily modded to even be considered fast IMO. Its just not worth the money, time, or aggrivation to start out with this quad for high speed purposes. Obviously you cant tell this guy that, he thinks his quad is the fastest here.

What I was getting at, was look at the same amount of money put into a Shee and see where your at. I'am not knocking a Polaris motor at all. I had a 250cc 2 stroke that would rip pretty good, if I would have just known about being able to remove the oil injection, and just mix the gas, I would still have it.....maybe. I can imagine that with 2-3 grand you can make any quad rip ass/

Totally agree, but a 400 xplorer should not be in this same comparrison.

I just googled "polaris Xplorer 400 performance parts" and came across this older thread. Reason being is my 01 Xplorer 400 is finally starting to get beat by some of these newer "sport/utility quads" and I am looking into some mild performance upgrades. Not many people in my area (southern/central maine)ride sport (2wd) quads so I dont get to ride with them for performance comparisons often. I puchased my first xplorer 400 way back in 96, and rode with some friends in Vermont who were all riding sport quads. One guy had a banshee, another had an older kingquad, and the obvious leader of the pack was riding the mother of all sport quads a 250r. While my "tractor" (as they called it) didn't walk all over anybody's quad, they were quick to want to test ride it because it had no problem keeping up on the trails....the pit was admittedly a different ball game. And I was the only one who didn't get soaked durring the spring melt. I still have that xplorer but it is only used for plowing now. Ten years has added about 30lbs to waist, and the quads keep getting bigger too. My 01 never has a problem keeping up with whatever is out there now, whether it's a grizzly 660 or a rincon 650, or even a sp700 twin. I recently dragged against my friend's scrammy 500, and another guy's kingquad 700efi and he clocked us at about 68mph. Bottom line is I dont think xplorer4002stroke is ready to start racing against banshees or other sports quads, but the xplorer 400 is one of the best well rounded trail quads out there.
Posted by: stewstewstew
just checking, but do you need 4 different quads for different conditions or seasons? L.O.L. I'm just having some fun here. But I only need one quad that is relatively fast in all conditions. Oh, and I can plow my driveway with it too.
Posted by: stewstewstew
Who said anything about winning? Did I write that I beat a banshee? My point is that it doesn't have to be a screaming banshee to boot it through the trails. Utility quads have come along way from the Honda 300's of the late 80's and early 90's, in both ride and performance. I'm sure that your 450r is an absolute rocket, if you have enough room to open it up. One guy that rides with us had all kinds of ambitions to dominate the trails with his 300ex, and then his predator, and guess what, he ended up buying a sportsman 800 efi. Now he dominates. All that power doesn't get you anywhere fast if you don't have the ground clearance for the obsticles in the trail.
Thanks for trying to 'dis my machine when I didn't 'dis yours.
Posted by: CamoKodiak450
I'm sure the guy on the banshee felt sorry for you riding that tank of a quad and let you win! He's mom taught him a long time a go it's not weather you win or loose it's how you play the game. He's setting you up for races down the road when your so sure you can beat him that you lay some money on the line, then guess who's eaten who's dust?
Posted by: spyder6
well the banshee was built for straight line stuff and dunes, the quads of today, though there fast, are specificly designed to be everything quads. so while R&D time for souping up a stock motor to banshee speed is there, its being spent on wide comfortable suspentions and 4stroke technology.
stock side DS' with turbos, in take and full exhuast pretty much own moderately modded banshees, its all about what to do and how much you want to drop.
as far as the xplorer400, i would put money down that my 500 could beat it stock for stock.

No offence, but I would think a bone stock banshee could beat the 400 explorer. How fast do you think that 400 can go?
Posted by: newbomber
I owned a 98 explorer 400 for about a year, it was fast for a utility quad. I traded it for a 98 polaris sport with the same 400 2-stroke engine and the sport handles way better. I can go faster, take corners and jump on the 2-wd sport and still have plenty of ground clearance for the trails. I liked it so much that I bought another one to mod and let my wife ride the stocker. I just bought a CPI exhaust that I am having coated to keep it cooler and get that heat going out the pipe where it should. I will let you guys know what that pipe does over stock.

I used to own a polaris xplorer 400 until I had to go to university;(
I now have a Polaris Predator stock. I couldnt find any polaris xplorers for sale in my area so I went with the polaris 4 stroke sportbike.
The xplorer is very capable of beating high end race bikes I know because I used to have an explorer and now I own a Polaris Predator.
