Whats up with this?

Today I saw a family pull up, park their Suburban and unloaded 5 ATV's from a trailer. 3 of the riders looked to be under 10 yrs old and riding nice shiny quads. But w/o any helmets!

The father was doing donuts around their parked truck on a Banshee! Riding a Banshee w/o a helmet!? The kids were on 90's and going circles around the truck w/o helmets on either.

I don't wear alot of protective gear when I ride but I do wear a helmet! You probly will survive a broken collar bone, leg, arm etc. But if you bump your head your done!

Why won't people pop for a helmet too?

Posted by: maddog56

They probably didnt put them on since they were warming their bikes up and not actually going anywhere yet.

Its still possible to hurt yourself waiting around or warming up a bike, but I will be honest and say I dont wear a helmet until I'm ready to go riding. When I'm on public land I have it on whenver the quad is moving for the most part.

Ask Ernie about playing around in the yard w/o a helmet.img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

Sounds like you need to master your balance skills a little better before you try 40mph wheelies. And any "goofing off" w/o a helmet is pretty stupid.

I think you dont have the right size helmet, and also that you cant compare the times you got lucky to the one when your luck ran out etc.

I am having a similar discussion on another forum about why people dont wear helmets and why utility riders, and those just testing or warming up around the truck are seriously mistaken when they think they wont get hurt because there not really "riding" or "riding hard".

They dont call them accidents because we were expecting them to happen or were preparred for it etc. and there has been more than one rider (like the guy on the 250r discussed above) that was seriously or fatally injured when just taking a quick run or test run etc. I actually believe that except for the guys doing insane jumps or racing on the ragged edge that more crashes happen around the trailer or just messing around before or after a real ride etc than during an actuall ride because when we know were heading out for some fast trail action we are more "tuned" to what is happening and when were just wasting time or messing around we are not paying any real attention to whats happening.

My thinking is that it would seriously suk to wear a helmet every time you ride, but then you receive a serious head or brain injury when you were not wearing it while running in circles around the truck but paying more attention to all those little guys on the 90's and the damn thing rolls over ontop of your damn head.

I allways have to remind my friends with util machines that think because they dont ride as fast or hard as many of the sport or race guys that they dont need helmets how the majority of the fatal injuries to adults are from their 600+ pound utility crushing their skull or suffocating the rider etc.

ATV's are too safe and stable looking to a new rider and too many times when they find out it can roll over on them faster than a blonde can roll her new SUV while applying makeup at 75mph etc its too late as there not here to wear a helmet next time.

Worse thing is that all these serious injuries are being counted, and that info will be used against us all in our attempt to maintain and open ride areas, so please put that damn helmet on!!

440EX026, Please dont take this personal because I really enjoy your posts. However, have you ever thought of condensing your posts just a little. I know you are able to type 110 words a minute, but some of us dont have the time to read it all. I really do appreciate your posts, but dont have the time to read everything in all of them. I can only imagine all the wisdom I could share if I could even type 40 words a minute. LOL. hr>

It would really stink if you wore your helmet all day and then took it off and rolled riding onto the trailer.

Your not going fast and it really does happen in slow motion, but you can crash that way too.

And take my word for this, throw away your wooden ramps if you have them and get good ones with plenty of traction

Natural selection at work. Darwin RULES.

No, but seriously, we have 5 kids in our blended family. It's expensive, but we bought chest protectors, helmets, goggles, gloves, and boots for them all. We are passing our genes on !!!BR>
If you look at the Sand Chapel section of the Sand Lake Duner board, there is a really sad story of a guy who was riding all day WITH A HELMET and then was goofing off as he loaded up to go home. He didn't wear his helmet then. He wheelied over, hit his head, and then after a nasty week of lingering, he died. He was young too!

People around here put the idea of wearing helmets in the same catagory as using their turn signals...

THEY SEE IT AS A SIGN OF WEAKNESS!!!

I for one always wear a helmet. I don't care if others see that as being weak. I see them as being dumb for not wearing them!!!

This is generally what I do. I understand something can happen while just warming up your bike or whatever, but you can also get killed going out to your mail box. I believe everyone should wear a helmet when riding and be cautious, but if you nit pick your whole life it will have gone by before you know it.

I guess if anyone wishes to not wear a helmet, thats fine with me, just don't ride around me. We all wear helmets when we ride, and they have saved some of us serious injury, nothing more than a headache the next day, and another 75.00 dollar helmet coming in the mail. I think all of us have horror stories of someone not wearing a helmet, and I'm sure everyone who rides has heard at least one, so if you choose not to wear one you're on your own!

Posted by: mucky

thats just crazy why people ride without protection on. im glad I was in full riding gear and helmet when I crashed 2 months ago
I cracked the helmet and broke a rib . It could have been worse if I wasnt wearing it.
people are just stupid to ride without it

Posted by: TheWeedman

i wear a helmet wen im trailriding or messin around, but wen im puttin around who gives a sh!t

240YBlaster69, that is a tragedy for sure. My motto, "Dress for the crash, not the ride"

Compare wearing a helmet to wearing a rubber. You may not want to, or it may not feel right and you might get away with it a few times, but eventually its going to come back to get ya.

at the very least its a good radiation-reflector on those warm summer days

ok i'll admit it, ive gone out b4 for a cruise with the hat on backwords and the sunglasses on, i generally dont go real fast, maybe 45 at the most, but thats just on a road, i know accidents can happen but when im just cruisin down a road i dont get to worried about it anymore..But when i'm gonna go off road i wear full gear, cept a chest protector and thats next on the list! I hate riding w/o a helmet anyways, stuff flies up and some of the rocks ive been hit with could of hurt alot w/o a helmet on, plus u gotta wear goggles cuz i have the most sensitive eyes in the world and i cant go 5mph w/o them watering...When i was in wisconsin riding last summer i saw guys with baseball hats on and frickin goggles!! i mean common, just cuz theres a law that u have to wear goggles doesnt mean that u cant wear a helmet, and the majority of the guys i saw were on TRX450's and 400's...i know to wear a helmet cuz ive had crashes skiing and its important...only one thing to say, wear one, if u dont, u'll be sry

Posted by: raptor350chick

i wear a helmet no matter what....where i am, how fast im going, or how far im going...its the law in NV, but im close to the UT border, and its not a law there, and when i ride in UT i still wear it...it way to risky not to wear one

its a dump trailer so i don't need to worry about flipping of ramp breaking. I recomend people to but dump trailers they work awesome i've seen 1 too many people rolling there quads off of ramps and stuff like this but man this trailer that we made at the welding shop does do a good job

Thanks thats what it was, my helmat was way to big. I just got my new one yesterday. Fits like a glove. And i think my wheelie skills are fine. The only reason i fell back was cause of this really good lookin' girl that walked bye and waved at me. So of course i had to be polite and wave back and boom i made an @$$ of my self. Though she did come to my rescue. I was like ouch!!!!!!!!! yeah.....I had to show her my battle scars. Thats when she got on my rappy and started wheelies almost as good as i was! Remember always wear a helmat.

Makes no sense... I was reading a thread earlier about a guy who wasnt wearing a helmet and hit a tree and now hes in critical condition...i feel sorry for the guy, if only he had a helmet...I understand that without a helmet you can see a little better and can hear a little better but i think that the protection of a helmet is a lil better.

In my whole intire life i've known my uncle i've never once seen my uncle with out a helmet. well oneday 2 years ago he decided to just test out his newly rebuilt 250r he left into the woods and didn't return for 4 hours. we went out searching for him and found him lying in a puddle of blood. He is now parylized from the neck down, that shows what a simple mistake can do. So i highly reccomend a helmet.

Ive been knocked out WITH a helmet on my head. there is no excuse for NOT wearing a helmet/goggles and other good protective gear. Also replace used helmets that have taken a good hit. call it an excuse to get that shiney new lid.

Take a look at a used helmet that has been in a major inpact, and ask yourself why anyone would ever want to ride unprotected.
Sorry to prech... I hate seeing people riding unprotected.
