i currently ave an 03 ds650 that i absolutely love except for the no reverse. so i am thinking about trading it in for something with reverse. the only options i have are raptor, predator and z400. i dont want a raptor cause 6 of my friends have them and i want something different. z400 (not fast enough, cheapy looking IMO) so that leaves the new 05 tld predator. i know it probably wouldnt compare to my ds. wont be as comfartable, just the shear size is obviously different. I was just curious as to how the performace of the pred compares to the ds. i know the difference is 150cc but how much of a speed and power loss would i have with switching to the pred. if the ds had reverse it would be the best quad ever made (imo). but the few times i have gotten stuck with it have made me want something with reverse. just for those times i need it. I hate luggin the ds. its like 500 pounds dry.

ill be sticking with stock. i didnt have any plans for performance for the ds. just fix whatever breaks. same thing with the pred. the raptor is out of the question. The raptor is damn fast. i have ridden my friends. very nice quad. just dont want to get one cause all my friends have them.
in a side by side drag race how do they compare? i know i will be sacrificing the comfort of the ds. but i really cant stand having no reverse.

I have heard that the only downside of the 05 pred is the seat is uncomfortable. it puts you in an uncomfortable riding position. also how is the reverse gear? i know on the raptor is has a really bad rev limiter. any type on backing up an incline my buddy will always stall.

my problem with the raptor is not the reverse problem. like 6 of my friends have them so i dont want to get the same quad. want something different. just like the ds. I think i have seen one other on the trail and none of my friends have them. also none have a rpedator. i just like to be different.

well im sorry if i offended you on the z400. i just think it looks cheap looking. dont really know how to explain it just thats how it looks to me. i guess i just dont like suzuki products. i also put IMO which means In My Opinion. also i have ridden my buddies 03 and i just dont like it at all.

im not that big of a guy. im 6feet. when i bought the ds i weighed 260. but over the past few months i have lost about 50 pounds so now its to big for me. plus its just not practical for what i do. just getting it in and out of my s10 is a pain in the ass. if it had reverse i could just drive it off but since it has no reverse i have to pull it off. plus it just fits in the back so i have to pull it over the wheel wells, it takes two guys to get it off the truck usually. one guy has to keep the handlebars straight. plus if we go to a trail and it ends abruptly and there is treess in the way so i cant blaize a trail to turn around i have to get off and pick it up and move it around. that sucks.
im going to look at the tld predator this saturday. cant wait. gonna bring the ds just incase they want to give me a good trade in price.

What ever you do, don't base any opinions of the Predator on any years previous to the '05. They changed enough to make it feel like a different quad. The seat no longer forces you forward. The shifting is positive and requires less reach of your foot. It is very refined. And it is faster than the DS. I have two friends, one with the Predator and one with the DS and the Pred is faster, not much, but still faster. I'm with you though, the DS would be hard to beat if it had reverse.

well if you didnt hop-up your ds..are you going to stay with stock on the Preddy?
Have you rode your friends modded or unmodded Raptors?
I was flip flopping between both quads (Rap and Pred) this past Christmas and decided to go with the quad that fit me better.
And the Pred atleast in stock form has a whole .9 mph top speed than a Raptor..wow!
I promise you wont be disappointed with either quad. Good luck and keep us updated with prices and mods.

uuumm..you wont be sacrificing comfort on the 05 Pred..TLD anyway..I've been on a 03 or 02 (cant remember which) DS..nice..I enjoyed my time on it..but it sits to high..and is to heavy with no reverse gear,which is important to me when trail riding.
I havent raced against a Raptor ...yet..Maddog has a raptor I would like to race up Bull Gap this spring/summer!

Well the infamous lump in the seat is there..however it shouldnt bother you that much..you'll notice it when sliding up and down the seat..but thats about it..and you cant compare the stock suspension to any other sport quad being made today.
Yes the reverse gear is super tall..just like a Raptor..Dirt Wheels said it will go 19 MPH in reverse...yikes!
Try one out at your dealer for sure...hell try as many as you can!

uuummm no the seat does not put you in an uncomfortable position. If anything it makes you feel to "high" on the seat...I prefer to "lay down" while steering my quad..a set of low rise handle bars will fix that problem.
Sportrax..how is it you have all these alleged toys and no camera to take pics..they selll them at Walmart for less than 20 bucks...you should invest in one and PROVE us ALL WRONG!

well my .02 on a Z..I didnt care for the rider position...the front end felt light..not the steering..I didnt care for the new plastic either..looks like a girls bike..IMO..you shoulndt offend anyone in these forums ...I mean you didnt ask for anyone opinion about a Z when you started this thread..its just some one with a Z chimed in about his experience with his ride...which is fine...but he didnt ask about a Z.

I'm not going to say alot on this topic because you seemed kinda biased towards the Pred, which is a great quad. I just want to know add a few things...
1. Since when did the Z become so slow? I have no problem holding my own with a friend of mines modded Predator. When dragging on the street we're either even or I'm ahead just by a little over a half of a quad, then top end comes and he gets a quad and a half on me just about everytime. For something to be so slow I'd say that's pretty decent. Z's have amazing take off, they just like to pop up a little too much.
2. In defense of the Z again, cheap looking? That is one of the dumbest comments I've heard in a while, no offense. If you can tell me what is so cheap looking I may agree with you. Please don't say something like that and give no reasoning, it's just asking for somebody to post something like I am.
3. Please don't judge something unless you have a lot of seat time on it or own it. I'm not trying to make the Z look amazing and unbeatable but come on man, it's not an LT80 you're comparing to these quads.
If any of this offends anybody here, I'm sorry, it's only facts.

i never rode a ds, but i think ud be pretty happy with the predator. the seat does put u in an uncomfortable position, but it is a little different for 05. from what im gathering the ds might be a tad faster

even when i lost the start to a z on my predator (both stock) i pulled by it quick and after being ahead for a few secs he was 5 lengths or so back

I have a Raptor and a Predator. And I have ridden 3 different DS650s.
I prefer the Predator in all conditions that I have ridden...trail, sand, dirt. JMO.
The DS650 generates more pure power than the Pred, but has a lot more weight to pull. The DS650 is big and not comfortable for most average sized guys, so I am guessing you are a BIG fella. My friends on DS650s are big guys, and I consistently beat them with my Predator. They have so much more weight to move that the small hp advantage can't overcome the load. But the DS650 does ride like a Cadillac....great in the desert.
The Predator (stock) will just barely beat the Raptor (stock) in a straight drag. The Predator is much more comfortable and much better handling.
I like the fit of the seat on my Pred. Others do not. Try the fit and see if you like it.
I imagine in Massachusetts you ride a lot of trails. Dirt Wheels rates the 2005 Predator as the best (stock) trail machine. I happen to agree.
These quads are all good, get the one you like and.....Have Fun!

If u switch to the pred u will be very sry top speed ain't that much difference but the DS is much nicer and do u really expect to get unstuck because of the weak ass reverse on preds If anything u will get more stuck. If u do mostly off road driving that a quad can get stuck in i guess go with the Z400 but u will miss the spead after coming from a DS my suggestion is to either look into a sport quad which(not sure if u can get one for DS) or just start going off road with 4x4's that have winchs. If u r a hardcore off road rider u should of just got a 4x4 like a grizzly or something.
