I would say a scrambler would make it the farthest, then a wolverine. After that it really depends on tire choice. If you put good mud tires on a raptor or kfx700 they will probably go farther than any other sport quad. The 700 is an auto belt drive, so I guess the raptor would be the answer you are looking for. Most torque of any manual clutch atv and that is what you need for mud.

I put a 1980 ATC 185 through more than most utility machines see. I followed my friends on eigers and ranchers equipped with mud tires and winches, and I was able to everywhere on that bone stock atc that they did. More fun that I've ever had on any other atv.

I'd have to agree with that. A lot of how well a quad can get threw the mud is the rider. My uncle has a Grizz 660 and only had about 3 months of experience riding and I had about 3 years of experience and I showed him up really quick going threw the mud on my Z250. He would get stuck in a mudhole and I'd just keep on the throttle and plow right on past him. Now that I've got my Holeshots instead of the old stockers I can claw my way threw the sticky stuff even better.

So its not what is the best sport quad for mud, its how good of a rider are you in mud?

Posted by: ridinsmooth

Posted by: ridinsmooth

man where did you guys get that i am comparing a wolverine and a scrambler and also rolsmojave3 i have 3 sister and 2 bros and all of the 1 of my sisters has 4 and another 1 has 4 and the youngest one of the three has 3 children and the brothers are 19 and 25 and they dont have children

Posted by: ridinsmooth

which i still dont understand how yall are talking about the scrambler it is not a true sport quad its a 4x4 with sport plastic on it and it is a automatic

Posted by: ridinsmooth

also where is the 250ex oil filter

Posted by: ridinsmooth

the yfz sucks in mud it has no ground clearence

Posted by: ridinsmooth

man i still think the ds is the best in mud has the most in ground clearence and it also has the power

Posted by: ridinsmooth

my friend blew his blaster by going mudding i dont suggest it for a 2 stroke thats why you dont see utilitly quads 2 stroke

Posted by: blindside350

scram or wolvy the scram is more powerful though

Posted by: blindside350

Manual? humm i did not know that an auto made it a utlilty *cough* KFX700 *cough*....I'd say the Raptor or DS would be better in mud, The raptor might have the edge since it has gobs of low end..

i love your math

300EX with 22's on the rear!

Sport quad for mud...i would say any of the smaller sport quads 400cc and less. My cousin put his 300ex thru some crazy mud some 4x4 could make it thru (so light). Buddies warrrior is good in mud too. Personal opinion on a mud sport machine would be an air cooled quad, 400cc or less, with reverse, and a backup started along with the estart. Dont know if that exsists but thats my opinion

Posted by: Canadianrider

I perfer light over anything...My old XT made it thru some mud..that my buddies recon got stuck in...over the bars in mud....that was crazy. Also my buddies 400AC made it thru the mud that my sportsman couldnt go thru...light light light is what i say. No need for big bore quads in the mud

I witnessed a scrambler trying to imitate a sport quad in a XC race last year. The first time he blew out a driveshaft or something and was towed back about 10 miles into the race, then 3 months he was in the pits at the next XC race with a bunch of shiny new parts, anyway we take off and about 1 lap into it I watch him snag a nasty rock and his steering stem snapped or something and a pile of parts came flying out and both front tires pointing opposite directions. That's about my extent of experience with scramblers lol.

Posted by: rolsmojave3

either one of the bikes will go through about the same...the raptor might get stuck faster with the extra power though...unless you becareful and work the gas and clutch...by the way...on your sig it says your are an uncle to 11 kids but your only 16....you must have very productive brothers or sisters

Posted by: rolsmojave3

thanks for smoothing that out for me..i get confused pretty easy..lol...yeah...i don't think they understand you want a 2x4 with a manual clutch

Posted by: iwannaride2

On a sport quad i don think any is really much better than the other...you just have to give her he!! and jump inn...then hope for the best...

Posted by: miloscio22

my z400 does great in the mud. i rarly ever get stuck and if i do i have reverse wich is a ton of help

Posted by: MNWolverine01

I never really had a true sport quad, but my 1989 moto 4 200 with 23' maxis tires on the rear was pretty bada$$ in the mud.

Then again if you really want to go through the mud, buy something with 4x4. I don't belive there is a "sport quad" out there that will go through the mud my wolvy will. JMO

Well I have a scrammbler and I would say its a sport quad not what u guys think of which is more of a performance quad....perhaps we can call it an SUATV. But back to the question, my 700 comes to mind first....and it is an auto but you CANT call a VForce a "utility in disquise" so i dont know why it has to be manual. For a manual however a Raptor would be it.

Posted by: XtremeSkier

oh so scramblers suddenly arent sport quads huh? well scramblers do the best in the mud outa all sport quads

Posted by: XtremeSkier

scramblers are alot sportier then they look, the minute u look at one u'd think it was a sport quad and i put them in the sport class, there capable of doin alot of things otehr sport quads are and they're only downside is weight, if they made scrammys at 350 pounds with a full manual tranny they would be a very popular sport quad

It is actually considered a sport/utility by polaris. I blew out my back shock when i landed a 10ft jump over the summer. then i had to pay $300 for a new shock. The scrambler does good in the mud thats because it is a utility in disguise. Although is looks like a sport quad it DOES NOT deserve the name. Did anyone else see the issue of dirt wheels that had a picture of a scrammy with a broken axle being carried by a bobcat? ITS NOT A SPORT QUAD! it just wont take the abuse that sport quads take without breaking something. Thats my experience with a scrambler...................take it for what its worth. My z400 will spank my scrambler anytime....anywhere...anyday PERIOD!

haha dude settle down alittle bit, ur gonna have a brain anurisim if u spaz any harder. And yes Z400's are amazing quads, in my opinion they'd be at the top of the chain if they were 450's, they would be some good compitition for the YFZ and the TRX outa the box. and dont forget doug gust races a bored Z and its an amazing quad (course he has some phenominal riding skillz as well)

Posted by: XtremeSkier

haha i thought it was funny, least we all know u have a strong opinionimg src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">

lol

Posted by: XtremeSkier

do u know that from expierence or what

Posted by: strongtyer

for everyone that says scrambler and wolverine. arent those not really sport quads and they dont have manual transmissions. not dissing just look at the original post. "which sport quad doest the best in mud and it has to be a manual." i agree that they are both good in the mud tho.

ya, but the Z would need a lower center of gravity or wider stance to compete out of the box. i agree mostly on what you said tho.

lol............sorry, i just got a little excited.

Rider, true, but I don't think getting through mudholes takes all that much skill. It's about all tires for me. I went today (pouring down rain) with mud everywhere and the Z with 60% tread on OEM tires SUCKED. Never got stuck, but I didn't stop spinning the rears all day. And that's with sitting on the rear of the seat the whole time. If I stood up... forget about it. I have 20x11x9 Razr's on the Warrior and it's way easier to go through everything. After today, the Z's getting new rubber for sure.

To answer the original question. Now matter which quad, the one with the gnarliest treaded and taller tire will most likely do the best. I do agree about the low end power helping, but if you don't know how to ride, it could hurt you as well. TIRES!

Dont think a wolvy is a sport quad but id say the scramy cause its got a ton of clearence and its heavy.

Posted by: yamaharaptor350

arn't scramys 4x4's. well if they are then there deff the best sport quad for mud.

Posted by: yamaharaptor350

id say ds cause its heavy and really powerful

Posted by: trailgunner

just dont go muddin with a 2 stroke sport or u better have an extra piston lol

Posted by: AnimalMother

my yfz450 does good, is light so it dont sink as much as raptor or ds ...... i think the warrior is a good mud quad also
