Go with the 400ex, It's more dependable than any other quad of its size and its easy to work on, when it needs work which is seldom; especially, if your buying used. You never know how the other rider treated it and with a honda you don't have to worry about that as much. As far as the "no reverse" goes, it is easy to whip around on a trail, but sometimes it does suck if you get caught on a skinny dead end trail. Its light and easy to turn around if needed.

If you look around you can find a nice 400ex for cheap. Last fall i saw a 440ex with extended arms and axle, shocks, and other stuff for around $2600. All you have to do is look around and you can find some good deals.

just buy a used banshee and then you can do a ton of mods and still be prety fast stock

I would look for a well built(but maintained) 416/426EX or 440EX/Z.. You can pick them up for good deals and the power increase from a stock one is substantial.

You can get to low/mid 40's horsepower really cheap on the 400EX.. With less than $550 and about 8hrs worth of my time, I got mine pushing about 42hp. The 400EX is VERY easy to work on and is unmatched in terms of durability and quality. Both quads are good, but the choice is not as clear cut as some Z owners would have you believe.

My throttle has always been really easy to push, my clutch was easy at first but now it's more difficult because I went to heavy duty clutch springs. Sounds like the cables are in need of replacement. You can sometimes just lube the cables if the cables aren't worn, but my experience with cables in general is that you're better off just replacing them if they're old. What year is the EX?

Well my 400 is not a soap car. No matter how much mods you do on the Z 400 you will never compete with the scrambler

well i have a 04 yfz450, 01400ex , 91 and 87 warrior and a 04z400 . out of the 2 400s the z400 is slightly faster but of cours the yfz smokes them all in every way. but when it comes down to it out of the 2 400s i always end up riding the honda even thou it doesnt have reverse but the feel of it is better than the z and also its the most dependable quad ever. in this case really in the 400s its not what bike its more like the rider . yea u might be able to hop on a street and race a 400ex and beat him by little but when u hop in some wooded trails or track its the rider not the bike . there all good quads no matter which 400 u get u really cant lose . just my 2 cents

You can pick up a used 400 scrambler/sport/TB for $2-3 grand and with $400 mod it to be faster in a strait line than the 400 ex or Z.

for those of u who are thinking of comparing the 05' 400ex with the 05' z400.......dont do it. Dirtwheels magizine says after testing both machines to the limit "the z400 smokes the 400ex" and there not just talking about speed there.

When i looked for a quad i looked at the 400EX and the Z400 and i didn't really like the way the Z400 felt when i sat on it so i went with the 400EX and i really don't have any complaints at all. I like to ride trails and the EX has more than enough to throw you back on the trails.

the Z/Kfx is deffinitly the best all around quad it has everything u can need on it, it is a little bit quicker then a 400ex as well

The Z400/KFX/DVX are the best all around 400cc quads out. The 400EX is the same price now and the Z400 still beats it in almost everything, if not everything.

04predrider, the 04 Z/kfx/dvx are identicle cept for the body..........did you mod. yours? stock is the same. unless you raced crappy riders your dvx wouldnt be any faster stock than the others. I would go with a Z400 cuz thats what i have.

I would have to say the DVX because it really good machine and its fast it kept up with my pred and i lost a kfx and a z400 in 2nd gear

Exactly. The Z/DVX/KFX400 are the fastest stock. Anything can be made fast. If you want best bang for your buck with aftermarket parts, get a used EX and mod it. The others will always have more potential though.

heres my opinion are u going to be trail riding on like tite trails and if u come to a dead end wut r u gonna do wen u have a 400ex no reverse u gotta get off the dang quad and throw it around while the z/kfx/dvx all have reverse extra thing to also think about but thats just my opinion and im looking into buying a quad also but i wanan get new i dont want somes used beat up thing and i like the orange kfx cuz no one i no has one all green and then 2 zs one white one yellow and 3 people with dvxs one green and the other 2 blak and red

hey friend has a dvx 400 04 with axeracing skidplate and a hmf slip on and a arcticcat nerf bars and this thing is very fast compared 2 the kfx and the z he beats everyone around here with themso i would say go with the dvx if there is a dealer close 2 you.
