If he doesnt plan on racing a 250 Trailblazer with a few mods is a great trail machine. Our TB will out run all the 250s,run even with a Blaster and hold its own with the 300s.

how old is he? my girl is 12 she has a z-250 and loves it. with his expereance just get him a z-400 or something so you don't have to buy another next year.

Posted by: crazyoldfart

i would say the z-250 then, its a great quad, the only thing i don't like is the shocks are a little stiff.

Yep, the 250EX and the Z250 are very easy to maintain easy to operate quads. If you anticipate him growing and wanting a little more, the 300EX is a fantastic quad he can grow with more than the shaft drive 250's.

From the sound of it - he's ready to do some serious a$$ kicking.
In 7th grade I had a honda ATC110. It was fun - but with no suspension (after breaking/welding a rear suspension kit too many times to list) it was a tough slow ride.
Then came 8th grade - and my dad brought home 2 bikes. Mine was an 86' CR250. (I think I was 14).

It was bigger, faster and could get way more air than any of the bikes my friends' had.
(Mind you I grew up right @ the Johnson Valley OHV area - we could ride our dirtbikes to school).

It taught me responsibility (changing fluids, mixing gas, maintenance, etc.)

The only one I couldn't beat was my father on his 85' CR500. He always had to be faster than me.

I learned to clutch, wheelie, etc. in no time. I wish I still had that bike (for my son). The new ones are SO pricey.

Maybe your boy is ready to move out of ATV's and into something a lot different and much faster.

I was going to suggest a 250r too..

But I think a cr250 (even 4 stroke cr250f/cr230f) would be better for teens. (Don't ask why)..

Alot of teens like MX, to hang out @ the MX track, etc. Its the hot thing to do.

My son keeps buggin' for a new cr85..

get him a mojave their quite potent little guys i have mine modded quite a bit and it runs with the 400s instead of later on spending lots of money on a bigger quad dump 1 or 2 gran and they rip. check out "mojave addicts" rides.

I have two suzuki z250s and we couldnt be happier with them, we ride the balls off of em all day long and they never miss a beat. The only thing that kept us from picking up a couple of hondas was they where so ugly, I couldnt stand the looks of them. If he ever does get bored with it just throw a pipe, filter, and jets on it and he'll be good for another 2 years or so. Real easy to maintain all we ever do is change oil and wash them and just make sure they're in proper running order and they have never failed on us.

the 25oex is a great quad as well as the z250 but i still suggest the blaster for him

My neighbor bought the Honda 250 ex for his daughter and I bought the 250 z for mine. They both great quads but the z is faster! I bought an 04 for $2800 and he paid $3300 for the Honda. I am not a brand fanatic as you can tell by my profile. I did my homework and the Z is the best in this category in my opinion. One upgrade I would suggest for either quad is wheel spacers to widen the track both quads are narrow and tippy when riding aggressively. Good luck!

My youngest son has been riding ATVs for five years, and has progressed from 50cc, to 90cc, to 125cc. He will be ready to make the jump to 250cc by spring, so what 250cc ATVs should we look at? We are not brand biased, and so far he has had Polaris, Honda, and Yamaha. I'm partial to green myself but it does not look like Kawi has shared the 250 Z with Suzuki. Are the Honda 250 EX and the Suzuki 250 Z the only two choices out there? And is there any significant difference between the two, or is it just a matter of which one you can get the best deal on?

Thanks,

OuterLimit.

He is nine. The 250 is kind of pushing it as it is, but with his experience he should be able to handle it. I think an auto clutch ATV will be a good step up from his automatic, and will get him to start learning to shift gears. A 400cc ATV is still a few years away.

can the kid use a clutch? do you perfer it to have a clutch or no? i think the 250ex and Z250 are pretty much similar in performance and reliability, and i would get which ever you can get a good deal on. Good choice going with either. happy trails.

250r!!! give him a (hopefully if its stock) small ride that can kick most anythings ass.

250R. haha

i think a blaster will be good...its a beginger sport quad fully manual its not fast but it has a lil pep to it and it alot of fun

Posted by: MX450RIDER

I'd go with the z250 it is bullet proof my wife rides hers and my 12 yr old daughter loves it to hell i even bust lose on it every once in awhile

Posted by: VelociRaptor350

And you can bump it up to a 240 when he gets bored of it.

Posted by: VelociRaptor350

Polaris has that new quad, the phoneix, its a cheap entry level sport quad, maybe you can check that out.

z-250 looks like agreat entry level qaud to me

Posted by: HIPPY

Blaster is a great sport quad to start on,6 spd, 2 stroke, only kick start, though. I think
the mojave is a good bike too, but it only has a kick start. I think the 300 ex is a best bike
to start on. Electric start, reverse, and 5 spd tranny. If you want manual tranny, for your
son these all are good, but I like the honda.

250 ex cause it has an auto clutch and i dont know about the z 250

Kawasaki just quit making the Mojave after '04. It is a 250 4 stroke, but has chain drive, manual clutch, and better suspension and handeling that the Z250 and 250EX. It is also kick start instead of electric. It is faster than the other two, but a requires a little more experince to operate.

Posted by: Greenblood

Well if he's nine, He should be able to handle the Mojave. Its got plenty of power, and he'll have to learn some maintence some time. So he could lube the chain, change the oil, etc. If he big enough, he could probly kick start it. Lol, j/k nine is probly too young for the Mojave. althought I have seen kids that young on Blasters. I saw a 12 year old on a Tecate at a drag race last fall. Just an Idea.

if your thinkin z250, dirt wheels did an article about a little clutch conversion kit so he could learn manual after he gets the auto clutch down.

Posted by: strongtyerYFZ

a blaster would be a good choice

Posted by: trivalleyracing

there more than just 250 sports out there too look into the ozark 250 its prity much the same as the z250 but a little heaver and it has a little more protection in the case of hiting trees and othere objects and if u wat him to have a manule cluch after the z 250 after market clutch kit will work on the ozark too!

Posted by: svhsrider

i say get a blaster if you wanna stick to a fourwheeler. he may be a bit small, but my buddy got one when he was about 9 and he was a really small kid and he did really well on it and it satisfied him till he was about 15. i think that your kid sounds like the bikin kind though. i say get him an xr 100 or a ttr 125. i have an xr 100 that i bored and piped and i can beat z250s and blasters on the trails just cause it is so light and easy to manuver.

Posted by: 2strokegood89

i would have to say the best sport quad for him would be a yamaha blaster(stock) or a honda 250 ex or honda 300 ex(stock)
