Thanks
BAD BAD BAD.
Your spark arrestor MUST be USFS approved to ride on public land that is covered in vegetation in California.

Ok. Nowhere did I take to personally attacking you. Go ahead and bash me all you want, I don't care.
I mearly meant it was an EXTREMELY bad idea. Go ahead, do what you want. It's your land. But *IF* you catch YOUR land on fire, you will be cited most likely. You WILL have to pay all firefighting costs. So you saved a few bucks by making some stupid "spark arrestor." But you just cost your family a ton of money to fight a fire you caused. Which WILL be used by anti-access people against the community.
I decided to go and look myself and I guess I was wrong. It's not just public land.
California Vehicle Code, Division 16.5:
Quote
Spark Arrestor
38366. (a) Notwithstanding Section 4442 of the Public Resources Code, and except for vehicles with mufflers as provided in Article 2 (commencing with Section 27150) of Chapter 5 of Division 12, no person shall use, operate, or allow to be used or operated, any off-highway motor vehicle, as defined in Section 38006, on any forest-covered land, brush-covered land, or grass-covered land unless the vehicle is equipped with a spark arrester maintained in effective working order.
(b) A spark arrester affixed to the exhaust system of a vehicle subject to this section shall not be placed or mounted in such a manner as to allow flames or heat from the exhaust system to ignite any flammable material.
(c) A spark arrester is a device constructed of nonflammable materials specifically for the purpose of removing and retaining carbon and other flammable particles over 0.0232 of an inch in size from the exhaust flow of an internal combustion engine or which is qualified and rated by the United States Forest Service.
(d) Subdivision (a) shall not be applicable to vehicles being operated off the highway in an organized racing or competitive event upon a closed course, which is conducted under the auspices of a recognized sanctioning body and by permit issued by the fire protection authority having jurisdiction.
Added Ch. 1027, Stats. 1987. Effective January 1, 1988.

I'm looking out for the sport, true. When people screw up it makes everyone involved with the sport look bad.

The moderators and dbeck may remove any thread at any time if they wish to. They run the site. It's their "playground" if you will. They don't need anyone permission to remove a thread.
And I'm not here to put people down. If someone posts something up, asking for people's input, then expect to get some input. But you may not like what happens when people start calling you on the carpet for your actions.
Most likely the USFS will not just approve some screen and hose clamps someone came up with. They'll probably want you to prove the device works. It would probably be much cheaper to go and buy a full exhaust system (that includes a spark arrestor) than to go through that.

People like this guy that do stuff like this and then may cause a fire are the ones that are going to ruin the sport.

he probably has more of a chance of starting a fire by throwing a cigarette out the window, but you dont see those get banned because they start fires, and thats the cause of way more fires than atv's w/o spark arrestors. man i really disagree with those hippies, i mean sierra club people. theyll look for anything to shut us down. i say we should ban hippies. whats so bad bout atving. " they take up and ruin land" well most of the OHV parks by me are by a nuclear science lab or a jet fuel company, so noones gonna wanna build there house there anyway. " they pollute" no more than cars, no where near as much. damn hippies

"Bad Bad Bad" is how I would respond to my dog if it pissed on the carpet. I am not a dog, so don't reply to me as one. Now, if you read closely you would know that I will be riding on my family's ranch. And, as we have yet to grant this land to the good citizens of the state, it is private. Therefore I do not need an approved spark arrestor, mearly one that works. I did manage to take two layers of metal screen with a hose clamp and fashion one that works for under 5 bucks. No sparks fly out anymore. I am considering finding a local USFS place to see if I can get the muffler approved. By the way, what happened to that COPS thread?

All worked well during the ranch trip, no fires, but a few bruises. I need to use my chest protector more often.
