Sounds like you guys are well on your way to "Californiazation" of you wonderfull state
just a few less civil liberties never hurt anyone
its better for the majority of people...who are an uncalculating, unapreciative, and basically un-real
head to the city council meeting with everyone you can get ahold of...make sure to take your trucks, and trailers, and atv's to help illustrate the point of how many atv's are in the community

I can see their point and frankly I can't disagree with what is going on.... First it is my thought that with a local registry, it makes it a lot easier for law enforcment to track down who really is at fault when someone acts out.... sounds to me to be a positive if not abused.

Hmmm, it is a wonder... If you look at this from a different perspective.. it may make a little more sense. First off, I'd doubt that the city council or whoever came up with the "plan" did so just out of the blue. Seems logical that their action was driven by either a lot of complaints or someone's personal vendetta against ATV riders in general. I suspect riders on the streets were probably acting out... Come on, we all know it is hard to resist hitting that throttle and seeing what she will do... Hard to say, I don't live there.... but I'd have to admit that if I were a property owner there and had to dodge a few people feeling their oats and claiming they were following their "rights" to ride etc... well I'd have to join the gang and vote to shut them down... of course I live where we ALL have to trailer our machines for hours to ride.
For those that ride responsibly, you have my sympathy... but for those that may be at fault for acting out... well, I guess it is just deserts.
The real challenge is going to be how you go about changing the perception that all riders are bad.
A second thought is that I wonder if a few kids were to go tearing around on bicycles damaging stuff and causing accidents, would they outlaw Bicycles?

Unfortunately, no matter where you go, ATV riders are under attack. Right now, there is a lot of people watching MN, as the DNR and US Forestry service are involved heavily in this state in a battle with the environmentalists. Make no mistake, the Forestry service and DNR are battling with the environmentalists as well, adn they "CHOSE" MN as a battle ground because of it's vocal resistance. What happens here, will have lasting results elsewhere in the nation. Which makes it doubly important that those thac can show up, do so. If we lose MN, it will affect the rest of us.

That's part of the reason why atvs are not allowed on the paved streets of America. People don't use common sense. So, they get up and goand haul buttThen, they come here and talk about how they out run the cops. Be lucky you can still ride on the streets.
The placard is used to notify on-coming cars of "slower" moving vehicles ahead. I didn't see in the first post of the thread, where you had to put DOT approved tires on the atvs. Maybe that should be brought up.
To go with rallying the troopsIf the council does not budge from their stance, try negotiating with them, about giving up the placardif you put DOT tires on the atv while traversing the public roadways.
And, we see it all the time. One bad apple, RUINS it for everyone.

RALLY THE TROOPS! Get all the local ATV'ers together, get organized and goto the city council. Explain to them it shouldn't be the ATV'ers fault 'cause they can't keep a drunk off the road. You all should not be held responsible. If they won't budge, make the drunk "disappear" (hey, he's effin it up for everyone else, he's got to go!) then reapproach council. See if you can get Team Industries and any other local ATV oriented business behind you.

Wonderful news.
Our city council recently passed an ordnance requiring any and all ATV's (and golf carts) to apply for a permit if you happened to want (or need) to ride your machine within the city limits. The permit is issued by the C.O.P., costs $30 annually, and requires the following additions / modifications to the vehicle:
Permit number displayed on rear of machine in 3" high numbers
Turn signals
Mirrors
Headlights with both high and low beams
Blaze orange flag on 6' whip flown from rear of machine
Speed restricted to 10 MPH
Slow moving vehicle sign
And hours of operation from 1/2 hour after sunrise to 1/2 hour before sunset.
The permit is valid ONLY for certain designated roads.
I personally consider this to be complete BS. It was brought on because there is a gentleman in town that has lost his drivers' license for-ev-er because of DUI's, so he took to driving a golf cart around. Often intoxicated. So
they took that away from him. Now he's driving a riding lawn mower around.img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif" border="0">
You'd think that this town would be a little more welcoming of ATV's . . .. After all, the ATV industry is (indirectly) responsible for millions of dollars brought into town every year. (TEAM Industries has their home plant here, after all).

This was tried when the ordnance was first conceived. Problem being, the CC has TEAM in their collective hip pocket. (The city has arranged for TEAM to receive huge grants under the "JOBZ Minnesota" system, which provides for monies to be made available for expansion, etc., in return for providing employment for citizens of greater Minnesota. They just built a 150,000 sq. ft. expansion to their plant at almost no cost to the company itself. So, TEAM isn't going to squawk too loud). And the local Polaris / Cat dealer isn't a particularly great force to reckon with. The only other businesses that stand to be affected by this are a couple of gas stations that might lose a few dollars in sales, but that would hardly be noticable.
I don't think that there are very many ATVers that are directly affected. This is a small town with a very low per-capita income; I can only think of four or five people that actively use their quads. I know one guy that has a '92 Polaris 350L with 33.7 miles on it. He uses it for deer hunting ONLY; the rest of the year it sits on a trailer in his garage.
Fortunately, it won't be too much longer until I can move out of town. Maybe I'm running away from the battle, but I got tired of fighting it alone.
I tried to get these people to see that they should treat quads in the same way that they treat snowmobiles, but the only restrictions on snowmobiles are that they can go no faster than 15 MPH in town and may not travel on the 2 main state highways. No other restrictions as to streets, equipment, or hours of operation. The state treats ATV's differently than sleds, also.
Where's the justice in that?

at least you get to ride around in your state.

Phil, that sucks. I agree with Meyhymn. Sounds like a good idea, and it just might work.
