What do you guys think of a ATV park in Maine? blakey do you know of the proposed area for these trails, I did not see any mention of it on the ATV task force website.

Posted by: Hipboy

blakey I am attempting to set one up in Maine, can't say much now but it is a nice area with a fair amount of land. Mid NH would be a good spot if the price is right. I assume you ride the power lines in Wells? Ever ride in Genest (New Dam) pit before they closed it?

erskr1,

I did miss the numbers till I got the Task Force report, I was more interested in the locale of the trails in general. You are right that it is more than the Hatfield trails but they seem to have a good model that Maine may want to incorporate.

Just pulled the o'l Maine Atlas out and I checked out your area, looks like it is a sweet riding area......

erskr1 thanks for the heads up and the topo offer. I just e-mailed ya. Hope to check out those trails.

THEY DON"T USE THAT GAS TAX FOR TRAILS HERE IN NEW JERSEY!!
They are not using any fed tax money for a trail system for atvs. They use all the money for state road work and if any gets used for a off road trailstuff ,it's To help the police stop us from enjoying the forests.
I've looked into this a few ties and have found No evidence that they are using any money for the good of any nature lover.

That's interesting. Is there separate State and Fed tax on gas? In NY, the gas station can get at least their state tax refunded if the fuel is used for an ATV, motorcycle, etc.

resprider Your Links are not Working. They Must have Moved the Pages.

We Just did a Federal Grant here in my Area Eustis/Stratton, ME.... Built a 31 Mile Trail from Eustis to Natanis...Near Canada.. Could not get to Canada as a Private Land Lease Stopped the Trail....

ther Problem was the Paper Companies... Our International Paper Company Land Manager is a Hiker... Hates the ATV's and Snowmobiles... Stopped him Though by using the Feds Money... Harder to Stop the System and try to Move the Trail in the Future...

Another Thing to Consider is the Change and or Development of Multi-Use Trail Systems... that Means the Existing Snowmobile Trail can be Upgraded to ATV... This Also has a Great advantage... the Snowmobile Clubs get a more Permanent Trail and a Smoother Base... this Means they are More Willing to be Part of the Push for the ATV Trail Add'r that is Needed

Final Note... None of this will Happen if your just a Rider... You Need to Belong to your Local Clubs... and I mean an Organized Club... Registered with the Proper State Organizations

....if there is not an Organized Club in your Area... Start one....

Your Right... They Work Today..

They are planning to build 7000 new miles of trails to add to the 2200 we allready have. It still doen't compare to our snow mobile trails that have 12000 miles . But they also have the advantage of frozzen lakes to add some miles.

That is a Larger "Park" then the Hatfield-McCoy System
Hatfield-McCoy - Trails Heaven) Over 400 Miles of trails (more in progress)

Basically What is Happening is the ATV Clubs are Trying to use the Existing Snowmobile Club Trails. Converting them to Multi-Use. This Helps Both the ATV and Snowmobile Clubs and Means More of a Change they will be a Permanent Trail System.

As we the ATV Clubs Clear the Trails in the Spring/Summer we Help the Snowmobile Club and saves them some Money for Larger Projects. Like New Larger Bridges Over Streams, Brooks and Even Rivers.

I Belong to Both the ATV and Snowmobile Club and I am the Grooming Contractor for the New Trail from Eustis to Canada. While Constructing our New Trail we Made Sure Both Clubs got the Benefits... Like Installing Culverts and Water Bar for Summer Riding. We also Built Permanent Bridge Instead of the Old Loss them in the Spring Ice Bridges. The N. Bridge is 171ft the S. Bridge is a 121ft Clear Span and a Couple of Smaller 21 & 25 Footer's

Send me a E-Mail... Can Send ya a Topo... With the Trails.. Some are Complete and Fully Open.. The New one to Canada will be a Few Weeks in the Summer... Need to Get Final Culverts, Water Bars and Gates then the Final Approval by the State ATV Coordinator, DEP, LERC and International Paper.

Neat Note... Plumb Creek (State Wide) Allows you to Ride on their Land... No Permit.. Just Stay off the Active Logging Roads... Speak to Your Local Warden, he will give you the Active Logging Roads..

Ever wonder what happens to the gasoline taxes you pay at the pump—for your off-road motorcycle or ATV, your snowmobile or 4x4? Did you know that the federal gasoline tax goes to fund a variety of programs one of which is the Recreational Trails Program (RTP)? RTP is an increasingly important program because every year, as more and more Americans seek to use recreational trails for a variety of activities, these funds are used to construct and maintain recreational trails helping to make them safer.

Funding levels for RTP are currently being considered by the House of Representatives, H.R. 3550. This bill includes even greater funding for RTP than the Senate bill which passed just recently. RTP funding would start at $70 million annually and grow to $150 million over the next five years. ARRA followed the funding debate for RTP when it was being considered by the Senate and is following the debate even closer as it is now being taken up by the House of Representatives.

Your Member of Congress needs to hear from you now as funding levels are being decided.

ARRA supports responsible recreation and would like Congress to fairly and adequately fund the Recreational Trails Program. So get involved by writing to your Representative and expressing your support for better recreational trails. Click the below link to write your Representative.

Thanks for your inquiry about the Recreational Trails Program and how its funds are used in Massachusetts. The following link will take you to the state's home page for the how the Recreational Trails Program is used in Massachusetts: http://www.state.ma.us/dem/programs/trails/grants.htm

While the money comes from gas taxes, it is then distributed by the state. Private organizations--such as ATV clubs--can apply for funding to create and maintain trails. If accepted, the RTP would fund 80% of the project while requiring that the organization come up with the remaining 20% from other sources--from state or local funding or other fundraising efforts.

Fixitmatt,

I am not completely familiar with the allocation of monies in New Jersey, but thought I would at least give you a couple of links that address the Recreational Trails Program in NJ.

I know that the maine ATV task force has proposed to use the states gas tax to build and help fund the trail system they are planning to build.. They are planning to build 7000 new miles of trails to add to the 2200 we allready have. It still doen't compare to our snow mobile trails that have 12000 miles . But they also have the advantage of frozzen lakes to add some miles.

No they have not released that info yet because it is not on the ajenda to 2005. but they will have to find the land and either lease or buy it to make it perment. I have thought of setting up an atv park. I know of 700 acers in Mid nh. if i had moey i would try. One in maine would be possable if some on could talk to the maine paper companys to let someone build a copy of hatfield macoy. more land here to do it with too.

I'll write a letter to my friends, Ted Kennedy and John Kerry, but I don't see any of this money going to atv trails here in Massachusetts. Where are the trails? What can your organization do for us in Massachusetts to ensure that the gas tax money actually goes to trail creation and maintenance?

Weekend Warrior:

Thanks for the info. It appears that there are two main ATV clubs in Massachusetts. Sunday, I will be taking this info to a club meeting to ask what the club has been doing in order to expand trails in Massachusetts and to maintain the existing trails.
