Actually, the navicular is the most common bone broken out of the carpals that make up the wrist. Usually though people break their "Wrist" at the distal radius and ulna where your forarm meets the wrist. If it does end up needing surgery don't worry too much. They usually just go in and put two small pins in that hold everything together correctly. It sounds bad but the doc has to cover his ass and tell you the worst case senario incase something does happen to go wrong. 99% of the time a little down time healing and you back up and going just like new.

Don't know how old you are - young I hope. For broken things, young is good. I had a college roommate break his nevicular (college football) and had his arm in a cast for NINE months. When the cast was taken off and film taken, the bone had not begun to heal. You're right, not much circulation and that equals difficulty healing. I don't think his has ever healed and it was a very long time ago. Has a little less rotation, but it doesn't bother him - at least he doesn't complain about it.

Man that sucks. I broke two bones in my arm, my ulna and radius. Compound fracture (for those who dont know, thats when the bone comes through the skin) right on the growth plate had to have surgery and a lot of doctor appointments and Xrays. The doctors thought my arm might not grow anymore, but luckily it will. Still i was only in a cast for 6 weeks. Get better quick.

I broke like 10 bones in my wrist in a "freak" wheelie accident last summer. I yanked it up in 3rd going across an unfamiliar field with 2 feet of grass, and hit a large rut. It kind of spit me off the back, and I made the mistake of trying to catch myself. After major surgery, a plate, a rod, and 6 screws my wrist is like new. Thank god for insurance, cause it ended up costing $20,000. Next time its gonna be "TUCK AND ROLL"

Hope it heals up quick so you can get back to riding.

I hope that you heal fast. Sounds like it hurt...

So I was riding a wheelie. The best I can figure is I ran over a small log which changed my direction right towards a pile of wood. As soon as th front end started coming down the left front wheel hit a stump. The impact broke my right wrist and started flipping me over the bars. I was still hanging on with my right hand, and grabbed my bumper when I was upside down so I was pretty much doing a handstand. I prevented myself from going over. I bent my left bar 3.5" forward and 1.75" down.
The dotor that checked me out today said she has only seen one other person break this particular bone. It's a hard bone to break, and a hard bone to heal. It's called the nevicular bone.

The doctor in the ER said a "normal" broken bone takes 4-6 weeks to heal, but this is a unique bone and will take longer. I was guessing about 8 weeks. Often with this bone surgery is required. It's also possible for the bone to die because of the limited blood flow to this particular bone.
I went to the specialist today and got the real cast. The good news is that the Dr. thinks I only have a 10-15% chance of needing surgery. The bad news is that I'll be in a cast for 12 f*^%$$%^ weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This sucks.

No disability insurance through work or my atv insurance. Now I have to sell my Harley. It's a hard decision, but even if I could find other work right now I don't think I could come close to my current salary.
Posted by: Sparky8370
I wish it was a joke. I had considered getting rid of it before. (see here)
I never would have thought I would consider something so drastic, and in the end it was the sentimental (spelling?) value that made me decide to keep it. Unfortunetely, now I don't really have a choice. Hopefully, when everything is back to normal I can buy another one. But it just won't be the same.

Yeah, I wouldn't get enough money from the quad to sustain a family for 3 months. Plus, I still owe about what I could sell it for. So I would have to pay it off and the only benefit would be one less payment.

Yeah when I went to the specialist he told me that he sees about 2 injuries of this bone per year, but he sees over 2 dozen of the radius. The reason that this particular bone takes so long to heal is it's limited blood flow. For that same reason, he also said it's common to require surgery to properly heal the bone. But he told me that the way the bone broke in my case there is only a 10-15% chance of needing surgery. He also said that if a small portion of the bone dies that they will just monitor it for while before doing anything because sometimes, the bloodflow will return on it's own and repair the"dead" portion.

believe me man, I've thought about cutting this thing off and just saying to he!! with it. But I'm an electrician and I constantly use my hands twisting and turning things. I definetely need this to heal properly, and if I break it more I'll be risking surgery for sure.

I'm 28. With every other injury, I seem to heal pretty fast so I' m hoping it will be the same with this and maybe even get out of the cast a little early.
Posted by: Sparky8370
oh man, these stories seemed to take even longer(like JimJa said).read this

Went to the doc yesterday. It has healed so good, that he couldn't even see where it was broke. I had cut the cast off 10 days before. I also cut the last cast off. They had to cut it off and x-ray it every so often anyway, to be sure it was healing properly.
My Dr was shocked that not only had it healed with only 8 weeks in the cast, but it healed so well that he couldn't even see it on that x-ray. He said this is the first time he's ever seen this particular injury heal in less than 12 weeks. But like I said before, for some reason I heal really fast. Not as fast as Wolverine though!! LOL But sometimes if I get cut in the morning, it's all healed in the afternoon. It's funny when there's still dried blood, but no injury.
