Most stations peaked in our area at $3.299 with some of them at $3.599 - all for regular unleaded.
Yesterday most were at $2.999 and today it's $2.899.
A little glimmer of hope.

I just had some dumb*ss get all PO'd at me because I was doing 62 in a 60 MPH zone (instead of my usual 65-70). I guess he wanted to go 75. He floored it around me and said some crap. Him getting that worked up didn't bother me tho. It's not my blood pressure!
People kill me! On the freeway exit ramps I love how people in their little tiny cars ride your tail as you coast to a stop. I guess they like to slam on their brakes at the last second...morons. If I did that in my TRUCK I'd need new brakes every 6 months!

I say we all just quit driving for a week and put an end to this BS. Opec still only has maybe 4 bucks in a barrel and they are getting 70 plus bucks for it come on! I know it will be impossible to get everyone to participate but if everything shut down from people not driving maybe it would have an effect(possibly bad).

Regular is selling for $5.40 a US gallon here in Nova Scotia. We're used to getting gouged, but this is even worse than normal!
Posted by: NovaKaw650
The small, privately owned gas stations are hurtin'. The refinery sets the price; the local stations were told that they weren't allowed to charge any profit margin after the last price increase. The big oil companies want them to sell their gas for nothing.
Most locales in the US and Canada are like the situation around here: all stations get their fuel from one refinery, no matter what the brand. That refinery can set the price wherever they want.
The big oil companies make huge profits at the worst of times; they make record profits during times of highest crude prices and uncertainy. They will set all-time record profits after this hurricane, coupled with the situation in Iraq.
You haven't seen the oil companies stepping up to the plate with donations to help those affected by the hurricane, like a lot of other companies have.
The oil company execs will be making tons of money from this situation, off the backs of you and me, and indirectly off the backs of the people whose lives were thrown into turmoil by the hurricane.
Right now, if you own a refinery or own the oil, you control the world. It sucks to be the rest of us.
Posted by: NovaKaw650
I don't blame Bush, but........he said the gov't would come down heavily on stores and hotels that were found to be price gouging people because of the hurricane. Remarks about oil companies gouging were noticably absent.

87 is 2.739 to 3.099 here.
#2 is 3.099 to 3.699.
Right now the issues are demand and uncertainty about supplies. Of course there is that whole gouging and greed going on, especially in the Southeast. We're on a steady march up here, but nothing really dramatic like what is seen in the rest of the nation.
Definately will cut into my travels and riding.

MWQ is right. People just need to slow the hell down.
I had to make a 78 mile trip up north (one way) on CA 99. The rigs we're all pushing 65-70. I was supprised. Most of the time they run low 60s to keep the CHP off their back. They only slowed down just north of CA-152 as they approach the scales. I was trying to keep it at 65, or a little less if I could. Felt like I was going to get run over!
I'm one of the few lucky people in that my work pays for gas. The field guys have been ordered to car pool (well, truck pool would be correct) to save on fuel. We were running 5 trucks to the jobsite I went to. They cut it down to 3 trucks.

LMFAO. OMG. You're too funny. You're generally most efficient in the top gear, where you produce the least amount of horsepower to maintain speed. For every 5MPH over 60, you lose 10 percent fuel economy. There was a reason that the speed limit usesd to be set at 55MPH nationwide. That's about as fuel efficient as you can get. You're turning enough RPMs in the highest gear to not be bogging the motor.
You have to move the vehicle through the air wich is a fluid. You have to produce enough power to actually displace that air. The faster you go, the more air you must displace so you have to make more power. And you use a LOT of fuel to make that power. An extreme example is a boat. It takes like double the horsepower to make a boat go 10MPH faster.
Check out this link What speed should I drive to get maximum fuel efficiency?

I should find the gas record book from my car I had. Had a low price of 87 cents a gallon (yes, that's US currency and US gallons. ) And it was only a few years ago! I don't think we'll ever see prices THAT low again. EVER.

And I forgot...gas is STILL going up around here. Gotta make sure that California gas is more expensive than anywhere else. Kinda interesting...crude prices are down about $6 a barrel, commodity unleaded is down a pretty good amount...but our retail prices are up even more. Makes you go hmmm. I just wish my 401(k) had an oil based investment. Nothing but oil and petroleum industry.

downeaster, FYI, the big oil companies have CLOSED refineries. About 27 since the 90s because they had too much output. Now they bellyache...well...actually the consumers do, they just go check their bank accounts and laugh and puff on a stogie.
Rescue is in CA.
And with the hurricane headed for TX, get ready to grab your ankles. Prices up to $5/gallon. Also, the price of natural gas will go up big time as most of the production off the coast of TX is natural gas, not crude.

its about 4.50 here right now..... it will go down once things go back to normal and we get some oil that is being given to us by other countries.... because if these prices keep up like this.... the economy will go into a recession.... later on then the depression will come but highly unlikely but don't stop buying gas because of prices the recession will just come faster...... basically for those of you who don't know.... a recession is bad..... the economy collapses on itself...... won't be as bad as the depression in 1929...... the u.s found a way to get out of a depression.... its hard though...... once the oil refineries are back open down south..... the prices will hit record lows for a day or two. its about 145 dollars to fill up our tank. and we can only hope the prices will not jump to 10 dollars then your just asking for a economic collapse. there is so much oil in alaska to last us 60 years but we can't touch the land... oil refineries aren't that dirty anyways. and blackandredwarrior..... trucks around here on interstates and other highways are pushing 80. the faster you go the better fuel efficent it is.... 72mph is peak (top) mph for most cars my truck gets 15 mpg.

The Real Gas Gougers
by John Nichols
How convenient for the oil industry that Hurricane Katrina hit just before the traditional Labor Day-weekend hike in gas prices. Now, instead of having to fake up some absolutely absurd excuse for jacking up gas prices, the industry can try and dupe Americans into thinking that they are suddenly paying $3.25 a gallon because of a storm.
The oil industry's response to Katrina has provided a reminder of why it is so exceptionally profitable.
Even before a start had been made on assessing the damage caused by the tropical storm, energy corporations were cashing in. And every indication is that they plan to continue doing so--perhaps taking prices over the $4-a-gallon mark, according to James DiGeorgia, editor and publisher of the Gold & Energy Advisor and author of The Global War for Oil.
No one debates the fact that the hurricane has done significant damage to oil rigs, refineries and delivery systems along the Gulf Coast, a region that accounts for roughly 10 percent of US refining capacity. But roughly 90 percent of US refining capacity remains fully functional and, it should not be forgotten, the US has not stopped importing oil.
Additionally, the Bush Administration jumped to the aid of the oil companies long before the relief effort was in full swing.
The Environmental Protection Agency suspended summertime antipollution measures, lifting the requirement that refiners lower fuel volatility and cut sulphur levels. At the same time, the Administration moved to release oil from the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which was created more than three decades ago with the precise purpose of boosting fuel supplies in order to keep a lid on rising wholesale gasoline prices in a circumstance such as the one that has now developed.
Despite all the aid they are getting, however, the oil companies are not giving anything back. There is no evidence of a willingness on the part of these highly profitable corporations to sacrifice in a time of national emergency.
Make no mistake: These corporations should be able to absorb a hit. Over the past year and a half, the four largest oil companies--ExxonMobil, ChevronTexaco, Royal Dutch/Shell Group and BP Group PLC--have pocketed close to $100 billion in profits. During the first quarter of 2005 alone, those firms pulled in a cool $23 billion.
But instead of sharing the pain, they appear to be moving to squeeze every cent they can out of the crisis.
With oil-industry friends in charge of the White House and the Congress, don't expect much of a response from the federal level.
But this is one case where states have an ability to intervene.
Three years ago, in a move to protect against gouging, Hawaiian officials enacted legislation that allows state officials to set price caps on gasoline.
Now, as gas prices are skyrocketing in the aftermath of Katrina, a California legislator wants to give a state agency broad authority to regulate the cost of fuel.
State Senator Joe Dunn, a Democrat, has introduced a constitutional amendment that would allow the state Public Utilities Commission to require mandatory fuel reserves, set profit margins for oil and gas companies and order the construction of new pipelines. The measure would also bar agreements between energy corporations to reduce competition.
Dunn's amendment would allow the California Public Utilities Commission to cap prices, although the senator told reporters that step would only be taken as a last resort.
Dunn brings a refreshing bluntness to the discourse. Speaking to the Associated Press, he accused the oil industry of creating a dysfunctional market in California, in which competition is essentially eliminated. That, he explained, is why states need to step up their use of regulatory powers.
"Two years ago, when gasoline cost $2 a gallon, the industry said to give it time and prices would settle down. Now, we're seeing $3 a gallon," Dunn said. "People in California are no longer believing the excuses of the industry. If they can't fix their market behavior, we'll fix it for them."
It is certainly true that consumers should take steps to reduce their use of petroleum products--not just because of a storm in the Gulf of Mexico but because of the human, economic and environmental tolls this country's reliance on imported petroleum products has imposed. But petroleum companies should sacrifice as well. And if they are not willing to do so, states should remind them of their patriotic duty.

BR>I really do not care which political party you belong to but this we must agree on.
For over 30 years now the Democratic party has been in bed with the enviromentalist
groups, and have stopped any plans of building new refineries, to handle the crude we
buy from overseas. They have stopped all plans of drilling for oil off our coast, and
Alaska. The people of Alaska wanted the drilling in the Anwar area which is all tundra,
not the pristine scenery posed by the enviros. We have to get onboard and get both
started, new refineries, and drilling, or else we will be buying our refined fuel for the
towel heads for 8 bucks a gallon, in the not to distance future. It sounds good to think
of alternative fuels, but if gasoline was removed from the market buy only a fraction,
think of how many jobs would be impacted. This world runs on gasoline now and will
for another 50 years before there is a viable alternative. Any quick solution to our
petroleum situation with an alternative fuel may in fact work in one respect, but will
hinder us by putting millions of our population out of work. Think on it.
