Houses flooded up to the second floor, debris and polluted water everywhere, with no where to go, since they are below sea level, this will all have to be pumped and moved out of the way, reports say it could be years before things are back to normal for these people. I can't even imagine what lies ahead for these people, seeing every single thing in their lives torn away in a single day, makes a guy wish he could just take a year off to try and put some of this back in order, there is just so much that needs to be taken care of. I know from now on, I'll think a lot harder before I complain about some cold weather, high bills, or other relatively meaningless things from now on. God help them all.

I urge everyone to send support for these victims, be it to the Red Cross or some other reputable charity they are going to need untold resources both in monies and actual supplies. We are talking about hundreds of thousands of people who no longer have anything but the clothes on their backs. Its time for all the people of the US to dig deep and answer this call for help from these victims, The people of the US did it before on 9/11 and its time we did it again.
The damage was somewhat bad over here at Mobile, I cant imagine walking amongest all that destruction in MS and LA.....it truly was catastrophic.
Pray for them always, but lets also give what is needed.
Posted by: dirthead
Lets not also forget about the MS Gulf Coast. They actually had the worst part of the hurricane being on the east side of the storm, its just NO got jacked when their levees broke. There are also tens of thousands of people in MS (Biloxi, Gulfport, Waveland) that dont have homes to return to or jobs to go back to also. They estimate that along the MS Gulf Coast the dead will be several hundred I have friends over in Biloxi that I have not talked to since Sunday, all communications are down over there.....thats one of the big reasons why response was intially slow I believe because no one realized how bad it was going to get.
With the looters, like someone mentioned before if they are going after food and water I can understand that and not think to harsh but when they are going after stereos and jewelery they need to be dealt with in the harshest way........and for those who are firing upon rescuers and helicopters we should just let loose some units of Force Recon or Army Rangers and let them have some live fire practice with these sorry excuses of humansBR>
Sorry if it seems like Im venting but this storm hit real close to home for us here on the Gulf Coast, again let me ask that we all reach for our wallets and give to the Red Cross or whichever charity your comfortable with, thanks.

Yes about 1/2 of the Mobile area has power back now, We had lost power Sunday night but we were fortunate enough to get ours back late Wednesday night. There is almost no gas to be found in the Mobile area, as soon as a station get gas a 1-2 mile long line of cars forms and just hours later the pumps will be dry. People are waiting 3-4 hours to try and get gas, ice, and water. We are getting a LOT of people from MS coming over looking for supplies and Mobile is already short on everything so tension is a little high right now with people. We consider ourselves very blessed over here, we could have turned out like Biloxi if the storm had turned a little more eastward.

Thnx Bing, and its good to the country treating this as a national disaster and not just a Gulf Coast disaster. I truly believe we live in the most compassionate and giving countries in the world, and that we as Americans will get through this and come out stronger then ever.
Posted by: dirthead
I agree, its nice to see the rest of the world wanting to pitch in and help.....I just hope they are doing it for humanitarian reasons and not to just later throws this up in our (US) face that the strongest country in the world could not take care of it self.
I want to see 2 other groups step up to the plate and make a difference, that would be all celeberties (movie stars, jocks, rockers/rappers) and all "big business" (fortune 500 companies). I have heard of some specific celeberties giving but not very many have come forward it seems, if your a "movie star" and are making $10-20 Million a movie then they need to get that check book out and right a nice size check, same with these multi-billion dollar mega companies.....if Microsoft is not giving several million $s then Bill Gates needs to be slapped, same goes for Wal-Mart, etc, etc...

Kudos to Wally World! Hope others follow their example, its good to see companies give back to the community and not with just a token donation but one that will make a difference.

This storm hits close to home for me as I have many friends and family in some of the hardest hit areas.
I live a couple hundred miles north of the region and didn't get anywhere near the damage that these folks took.
Most, I have heard from, but some I have not and all I can do at this point is pray that they are safe and escaped the worst part of the storm,... and before it came ashore.
We ran generators, 100 gallons of fuel (a payoff here to get that), oils, and chainsaws down there just today.
TV does a good job of showing how bad it is. Take that picture and spread it across a region 200 miles by 150miles. There's alot more going on than what is going on in New Orleans and Biloxi.
Granted, folks in these areas have lost their homes entirely, but several hundred thousand people elsewhere here have nothing but the roof left.
No power, no food, no phone, no water, and no gasoline to fire the generators. We are headed for Day 6 here.
You wouldn't think there was a major national presence here with the military because the areas are so widespread.
Most are in New Orleans trying to prevent the 2nd US Cival War.

this is eating away at me. i dont have much, but what i do have is a room. my son is away at collage, so if anyone knows of a couple, maybe with a child or 2, that needs a place to stay, my family will welcome them in. we have basic comforts, and dont live in a large house. but, it is a roof, and as long as they are respectable, we will also be so. i can put them to work with me, and try to get them some money to help them start over. the work is hard, but if there capibable, it will be there. if they need help making it to me, i could possibly work something out. the school district here is the best out there for the kids. there is cloths, and pleanty of food. if anyone knows of anyone needing this, from loosing everything, email me.

its all i can do, but i,ll do it the best i can.

Being that NO is already below sea level it just makes every thing worse, not to mention being surrounded by three bodies of water. I hope the damage is minimal and that the levees hold.

Im curious to see the gov break their necks to help like they did in thailand, also what about all those countries that helped in the tsunami. America never gets any help from others or atleast its not reported. Im not saying we should be looking for handouts but anytime there is a crisis anywhere in the world we are always here to help. The Raptorman, Your right fuel cost is the least important factory at this time.
Several of our members live directly in the path of this storm. They havent been heard from since before Katrina hit.
Scholle, Top Secret Racing, Ward660r all live in this area. Other members such as Choose2lose and Sandbomber have family members in the area that havent been heard from.
Best thing we can all do is send Prayers and Money to help out.

I live in southwest louisiana, we didnt get much other than some wind. But my younger brother works offshore, he lost his vehicle in Venice, la. Thats a small thing to lose compared to others. I have an Uncle and Aunt that live south of New Orleans that may have lost everything. There children may have lost there homes aswell. It may be weeks before the find out about it.
I have several good friends that may have lost family members.
I live in an area that is seeing refugees everywhere, without homes, places to go, food, and water. It hits home when its all around you.

Just got back from the Lafayette area which is about 2- 2 1/2 hours east of Lafayette. What I noticed was convoys going in both directions. Buses lead by Texas Troopers heading west. 100's of buses.
Heading East was convoys of Military vehicles. Dozens of unmarked white suburbans with police lights on top (assuming FBI or ATF). Border patrol agents with swamp boats heading in that direction. What affected me the most was seeing convoys of private vehicles heading east pulling trailers with cases of water and other supplies.
I have been seeing numerous reports of looting and civilians shooting at military and rescue personel. Im truely upset at this. But I dont want this to underscore the million+ civilians that need our help. Its a horrible disaster in our own back yards.

I agree 100%
I know I sent some parts to a fellow member in McComb, MS and they still haven't arived. I looked it up on the net and he is only about 100miles from the coast (if that far). Hope hes not treading water right now...
The pics and news that I have seen of the area is unreal I couldn't imagine having to be IN it.
I know we are starting to feel the effects with the gas today. ($3.09 a gallon) Talking about shortages and all that kind of thing, but when you see people with their houses destroyed or flooded it makes you realize that 3.09 a gallon isn't that bad... BR>
I wish all that has been in the path of this storm the best!

this thread isn't about gas,,,,,its about destroyed lives
I just want to know where the navy hospital ships are that were in Thailand.
We need to get those folks out of there and shacked up with friends, relatives or good samaritans.
Check out the Craigslist New Orleans website,,,,,pretty interesting.
We need to dock about 40 cruise ships along the coast and get these people some durn help.

The one to watch is the natural gas. It's up about 15% today. And crude was never over $70. Highest it traded was 69.10. Gas is up 12 cents to $2.04/gallon.
Posted by: BlackandRedWarrior
We're only up 20 cents since the weekend. Cheap stations are about $2.839 (ARCO, some independants, Vons/Safeway, Costco) with the high end being Chevron, 76/BP and Shell at $3.059. Local Cheveron by my house was selling diesel at $3.699 ($3.059 for 87...so it's a high dollar station). Shell across the street is holding on to $2.999.
Local Gas price site shows gas up to $2.922 today vs. 2.838 yesterday.
Tis going to be interesting to see what happens. Roumers are $3.50-$4.00/gallon. At those prices, the quad is staying in the garage. Should make the environmentalists happy.

To see what's going on in New Orleans is insane. The looting for food & water, I can understand. Not condone, but understand it. But the steeling of TVs (really, come on, there isn't even electricity there) and reports of rapes. The shooting at rescuers (in helos and at the hospitals). They should just turn the Nat. Guard loose. They shoot at you, shoot to kill. Don't even call for med. help for whoever you shoot. We'll pick up their body later.
The link animal posted was interesting. It actually is dated 1972 or so.
I'm always amazed at the power of Mother Nature to show who really is in charge. I'm one of those junkies who can't get enough. I actually get ticked when it seems that half the stories on CNN's website containt half of a previous article.
Hopefully the lawlessness will subside in the next day or two. Saw on TV a lot of officers in pickups towing boats. Probably had to have 10-15 in each vehicle. Looked like they were packing for a fight (AR-15s, tactical shotguns, etc.) One truck was pulling what looked like an aluminum bass boat with an inflatable on top of it.

Mike, are you right in Mobile and have power?
Posted by: extremerider2811
i noticed on some news coverage..... there looks to be like a long bridge. and the whole road deck appeared to be gone... its amazing..... but when you think about it..... all the sewage etc.... that is in the water is going to turn everything moldy and they are probably gonna tear it all down and pile 600 feet of dirt to make it a couple feet above sea level, they should consider that... or get some better levees....

I ditto all the heartfelt sentiments said so far. The FEMA team from our area should be arriving there today, with more of the team probably going next week. I sure wish I would have been able to goimg src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">
I've been channel surfing all day since it's happened, watching the coverage on all the channels. It's just amazing to see what is going on. We can't imagine what they are going throughimg src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">
I can't remember all the countries on the list, but I know there have been a few that have offered img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0"> But so far we have declined their offers, we'll see what happens though.
I know it's not near what the victims are going through, but also think about ALL the people that are there helping. It's also got to be devasting for them to see all those people in the condition they are in, and only being able to help them one by one. Having to leave the poor deceased folks where they are and not be able to do anything for them, I'm sure they are seeing hundreds of bodies every day.
To me this is unimaginable. Pictures and video are one thing, but to see it in person is absolutely different. Been there, done that................
So much to say on this subject, but where do you start...... I guess start with "WOW"........... or silence...........
Great topic to start BING
Posted by: Quad4Fun
I know there are some companies that stepped up pretty quick img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">
Walmart initially sent $1 million each to the Red Cross and Salvation Army.......
They then stepped it up to $17 million dollars I believe......WOW, as much crap as Walmart get, great for them....
Posted by: Quad4Fun
I by far do not like some of the things that Walmart does as a business, both to employees and suppliers.
But, I applaud them for stepping up to the plate big time in the national crisis.
I hope, and am sure, that other big business's step up equally, or even better.
Here's a sample of what Walmart has done so far.....
- Evacuees with emergency medicine needs and no money may go to any Wal-Mart pharmacy to have their prescriptions filled free of charge, even if they do not have a copy of their prescription. People who have been displaced and are temporarily residing in other areas may receive a seven-day supply of free medication.
- Items such as clothing, diapers, baby wipes, food, formula, toothbrushes, bedding and water will be given out free of charge to those with a demonstrated need at "Mini- Wal-Mart" locations.
- As a part of the emergency relief convoy to New Orleans, Wal-Mart is sending nine trucks containing water.
- Wal-Mart has committed $15 million in cash to the relief effort, plus $1 million in cash donated to the Salvation Army by Wal-Mart to help them with activities such as providing 400,000 meals per day and portable showers and $1 million in cash donated to the American Red Cross by Wal-Mart, which will help them continue to run shelters and provide relief.
Posted by: Quad4Fun
I'm still thinking about all those folks down there, just amazing.......
We were suppose to get a few hundred folks up here for a while, but most of htem decided that Washington State was to far from "home".
I was looking forward to talking to some of them. They wanted Firefighter from here to help triage them before taking off the plane. To help decide if they go to the hospital, a shelter, or temporary housing. But, they didn't need us, darn. That would have been great to help them out. I ws also looking forward to taking some of them out on day trips to show them this area. Hopefully we'll get to do that.
All of you down that way, take care, and you know everybody is thinking of you guys....
Good Luck

Don't live near the eye of the storm just a little west of it in Lake Charles, but I work offshore and my truck is in Venice, LA and they have told us the 20+ foot storm surge will put our trucks at the heliport underwater.
Posted by: PrairieRidr
I have to agree with 1BigDS, right now gas should be the last of your worries, I work offshore and out of the 90 people that didn't get evacuated off the rig over 20 lost houses, and 42 of us lost our vehicles. That is selfish to be worrying how much you are going to have to pay for gas.
