effective July 1st, Minnesota allows 2 passengers over the age of 18. Bad idea IMO.
Children under the age of 16 are permitted so long as they are wearing helmets and eye protection. If it's absolutely necessary, the passenger should always be behind the operator of the ATV. Even young children of 3 years will affect your ability to steer the ATV.
Any time your machine is under power, it is trying to raise the front of the ATV. When the weight behind the rear axle exceeds the weight of the front, there is an extreme risk of a roll over. Especially on inclines. 99% of the time the passengers weight is behind the rear axle, causing the front end to be too light. Light front ends=loss of steering control.
The 2nd passenger on a single rider machine also inhibits the ability of the operator to control the machine and cannot use the body english needed to maneuver the machine safely.
For those riders who do ride double, they are the ones in control of the ATV (so to speak). They are 100% in control of their decision to ride double, in turn, putting themselves and their passengers at risk. Who's to blame when the ATV rolls or flips? You guys are smart enough to know this one.
Ride safe, ride smart.

I saw some folks riding double the other day. They didn't make a hill, and the bike started rolling backward. The obviously inexperienced driver hit the REAR brake. The extra weight of the passenger, being so far back, made the bike do a tremendous wheelie, and dumped both of them off the back. The rider had it easy though, he landed on top of the passenger!

My buddies all ride their kids on the front, from the time they were just old enough to barely hang on. You wouldn't catch me doing it though!
When we are camping, there is one kid that if he is having trouble getting to sleep, dad takes him out for a little ride, and he falls right to sleep!

There also is no place for the passenger to put their feet and hold on to. Look at the 2-up machines. They have handles for the passenger and pegs.
Most people don't know, but even on MCs, the passenger MUST have pegs on the frame or swingarm. At least in CA.
ON a standard atv, the passenger could end up riding directly over, or even behind the rear axle. It just starts to screw with the hangling for some reason. Makes the front ends lighter.

I've seen that. Kid ended up with a fat lip and his dad about got knocked on his @ss when he wouldn't let a couple women care for the boy. Kid at the handlebar. Lucky he didn't bust any teeth.

the frame is not built for two, If you look at the new two up models that are coming out, the frame is longer and the wheel base is too...The reason why the manual says not to is because it was not designed for it...yes sometimes two riders weigh less then one, the distrobution of the weight is different, two people may lean a different way, causing the quad to become unbalenced and less controllable

Riding double is OK on flat ground at slow speeds for an experienced rider.

My dad does that with my 2 year old sometimes (they babysit quite frequently). Works. I still won't take him out with us though. Not strong enough to support a real helmet yet. And I'm a litttle leary of the one that says Mongoose.

Very true, which reminds me....doing wheelies with hot chocks on back makes them hold even closer and tighter!

Everybody usually rides double with a friend, GF, kid, etc. I do it, but the quad DOES NOT handle like it should. So take precaution if you do it, it tips back a lot easier, and the front end won't turn nearly as well, it gets a serious "push" to it.
As for smaller kids, if your going to do it becareful first of all, but I say put them in front of you. My dad did this with me on trikes and sometimes when we would roll or sumpin he could grab me and protect me. If I was on the back he would have crushed me.

I wouldnt reccomend it. And I'll tell you why. I gave both my boys rides on my CR 500 quite a few times when they were about 3. They both rode a honda 50 by 4. I am a expert level enduro rider and was pretty competitive at the time. Looking back I was extremely lucky and probubly wouldnt do it again. Maybe on flat ground and under 15 mph, but definitely no more. Just my thoughts.

Riding double sucks! Its ok when you are going from the barn to the chitter, but any speed and it just sucks. I realy dont understand the concept of the two seater rigs anyway. Get your own and ride it! Its no fun being carted around all day, the quad is super heavy, and the wheelbase is long. IMO its much more fun to drive your own quad.

exactly..plus u have more controll..i hate riding as a passenger because i never know if the drivers gonna get out of control...and that kind of stuff just p!ss's me off..if ur gonna invest in a 2 up quad u mise well put another thousand in and get two seprate quads

I know the manual says no and signs are posted, but why not??
The seat is certainly big enough.
2 riders don't always exceed the weight of one.
Plenty to hang onto. etc etc
