Do you want a motocross, or off-road bike??? If off-road, take a good look at he CRF250X or even the CRF450X if you are a big guy.
One of the kids who rides with us has 200 original hours on his CRF250R, so they aren't as maintenence inteasive as everybody says. He rides off-road though, not MX. Still, I would never go that long without doing a top end and valves!

For me i wouldn't get anything other then a 2-stroke.
The 4-strokes have WAY to much to go wrong with them.
A top end every now and then is no big deal. 150 bucks at most for a 250.
And if you're a power junky the new 05 YZ250 and 125 are reworked and even faster then before.
Personally i don't like the 4-stroke bikes at all. I don't like the power band or just the way they feel.
But thats just me.
And a well taken care of 2-stroke lasts forever.
I have a 91 CR250 that still as it's OEM topend from honda. it's never been replaced.
It will be this spring. but the motor was broke down last spring and the rings where still in great shape.
14 years on a top end has gotta be a record.
I only run the best oils in my bikes too. I think this does make a big differance.

When it comes down to motocross bikes, it all comes down to the brand you like and your personal preferences. 2 or 4 stroke, blue, green, yellow, or red, they all have won championships. So the best thing I can tell ya is buy the one you get a better deal on or the brand you prefer, or if you have ridden both witch ever one you feel more comfortable on.
Personally, I like Honda dirtbikes, Im just comfortable on them and I like the aluminum frames, but it really doesn't matter. Even though I like the 2-strokes, your probably better off with the 4-stroke just because that is the future.

this spring i am thiking of getting a four stroke dirtbike. ive narrowed it down to 2005 CRF250R or a 2004 YZ250F. anyone have experience with these? in transworld the crf jsut won bike of the year... just wondering what bike would be better for me. im 5'8'' 135lbs or... 60 kgs

come on anyone else? any input is welcomed.

ok guys, i think im going to stick with the Crf250r, im not a big guy definetely im only 5'8'' and 135 so im pretty small but i am fairly strong for my size. i sat on the rm-z and it just feels bigger than the honda. plus i dont think i want a 4 speed, im already pretty used the 5 gear setting. supposedly the honda has the best suspension for the 4 stroke 250s and also the best torque and horsepower so i think i found myself a winner but i m still not absolutely sure i can always change my mind. what else do you guys say? especially those who own new four stroke 250's what do you liek and disliek about your bike?

It all depends on what you are going to do with the bike. The new 250cc racing 4-strokes rev to over 13,000 rpm and require more maintenance than a racing 125cc 2-stroke. So if you are going to regularly race in 125cc class and you don't mind lots of maintenance then the 250 racing 4-strokes are unbeatable. If you are planning on trail riding only then there are probably better choices.
I rec'm you get copy of January 2005 Dirt Rider and read article on Valve Trains. The rags often are filled with BS but this article is an exception. Anyone thinking of getting a new racing 4-stroke should read. This makes the old tech XR400 bike and 400EX quad both look very desirable.

i think the mags are full of it. ya iv rode a crf250 and i have owned a crf450. it all depends on what you do. the new suzuki is only a four speed like the ktm. thats not cool. just went to a ama arena cross and all the 125 class was 250 four stroke. and so was the 250cc class all four stroke. one of the races that bubba stuart was in he was the only 2 stroke. go ride some ones bike before you buy it!!!!! because the resale on a new bike is-----well you dont whant to know!!

From what I have read in various magazines the cr goes through valves quicker than the yz. If I was you I would go to thumpertalk and start reading review's on each bike there. They have a forum for just 4-stoke owner's.

I do agree that 98% of all magazine articles are biased towards the manufacturer of the day, whoever gave out the most freebees that day. It is just this one article that was the exception. Sorry if I sounded harsh.
