Just out of curiosity, have you ridden a sportbike before? I imagine you're wanting a "little" 600. My 02 GSXR-600 will do 167 mph, 133mph in a 1/4 mile in 3rd gear, and 0-60 in about 3.5 seconds. All it has is a Yoshimura Tri-oval race can and K&N filter. And I weigh 260#'s.

600's ARE NOT beginners bikes!! If you know this already, sorry for bitchin'. If not, don't put yourself in danger unless you're smart enough to respect the 105-110hp that goes to the back wheel. That can get you in an awful lot of trouble real quick.

Check out the message board at sportbikes.net. A lot of information for noobs and experienced riders alike.

Anything with an "R" in the name is race-track ready if you remove the lights, and you'll pay for that "R" on your insurance. Again.....THESE ARE NOT FOR BEGINNERS!!!

Welp, having to put your foot down when you stop, twisting a throttle, and having to keep your own balance at slow speeds are about the same on a dirtbike and streetbike. I know on a sportbike turning, highspeed and lowspeed handling, and braking and accelerating are completey different. You can lay one of those baby's down for a tight turn faster then you can say WTF!?! A dirt bike would kick out from under you at one of the angles a sportbike uses for a shallow curve, let alone a peg-scraping corner. It's kinda un-nerving at first, to say the least.

I know in Maine you hafta take your Motorcycle safety course to get a bike permit, but I'm not sure about Mass, but if you can take one I would do it. And I don't feel safe driving through Massachusetts in a 80,000 pound big-rig, let alone on a motorcycle. If you can find someone to let you try out an old street bike in an empty parking lot, I would do it. You'd be able to make up your mind about a bike or truck in less then a minute.

And read the post above!!

I dont know how the laws are in your state, but here you have to have a cycle endorsement on your liscence to ride on the street. That means going through a safety course (highly recommended) or taking the test at the DMV. I have an old Harley that I completely rebuilt with the help of my dad. Its nice cuz I can go for 2 weeks on $7 worth of gas, compared to $30 a week for my Blazer. But you have to really watch out for the idiots out there on the road. They dont give a damn about you!!!!!

I hate to post a "do as I say, not as I do" opinion but that's what I'm going to do here. I bought my first street bike when I was 14 (a little Honda 400 twin). I rode it a lot but it wasn't legal because I was too young to get my license. I have owned many street bikes and somehow have managed to stay alive; I had two friends that were not as fortunate as I am. If I were a cat I would be on my last life. Now. with that said…

If you want to stay alive, get the truck. Drive the roads for a couple of years first and observe how many absolutely horrible drivers are out there....you will be amazed. When you learn to be a defensive driver, then perhaps consider a street bike. I am sadly done with street bikes though I will always have a passion for them. I'm trying to stay around long enough to see my kids grow up and I don't want some yahoo changing that. I figure I&39;ve used up more than my share of luck anyway. Just my opinion, take it for what it's worth.

Good advise fasternu....

I'm sure from experience you have encounter some of these...

High speed wobbles at 140+

Tucked into a corner, peg scrapping, only to see sand or gravel in the road ahead

Misjudging distance and finding yourself locked up and sliding through a corner or into the back of another vehicle

Splitting traffic and finding yourself sandwiched between two cars and watching the gap close

Ridding the dirt shoulder at 100+ because you misjudging a turn in the canyons

And on and on..... These things happen and if you're lucky you can live to tell some tales.

if you get a bike it would be best to stay out of any heavy traffic for a while until you get the feel of it. street bike handle completely different than dirt bikes. on a dirt bike you scoot up close to the tank and lay on the throttle on the turns. a street bike you tose it in the turns with your body wieght and have to be gentle with the throttle unless you want to slide out. i've seen a lot of my friends lay their new street bikes down when they got a little to aggresive with the rear brake. if you ride wear a helmet because sooner or later you will go down. i've been riding on the street since i was 15 y/o and i am now 40. i have four pins in my body a damaged hip and cronic back trouble from different acceidents. some where road racing, some were drag racing and one from a m/x accident. like someone said above, don't go out and buy a large street bike for your first one. a buddy of mine liked my busa and decided to buy one for his first street bike two years ago. we buried him six months later. in my honest opinion the best starter street bike would be a buell blast. it handles great, has excellent brakes. it's balanced almost perfect and has plenty of power to learn on. a blast isn't going be out running a cbr600 but it will hange with them in the corners. and by all means watch out for the others on the road. older srivers seem to be the worst, they will pull out in front of you in a heart beat so learn how to work your front brake very well because thats where most of your stopping power is on a sport bike.

a street bike is easyer to ride but more deadly a car can hit you at any time you have to be very carefull

According to the last few lines of your post, your 400ex is your pride and joy... After about a year of debate I decided against a Yamaha R1 and got a quad. Depending on where you live, I'd keep the quad... You can ride that year round. Besides, it sounds like you have a lot of money stuck into that thing.

ok pretty off topic here, but who here has a street bike? i will be getting my permit pretty soon and im debating getting a streetbike or a truck. I like the fact that i can ride the bike rite away as apposed to waiting another 6 months for my liscence with a truck. I have a good deal of experiance on dirtbikes but have never ridden a streetbike, how much different is it, is it harder, easier? what do youll think.
