Also, when ATV's were imported into the US in the 60's. they were not given or put into the motor division. But, by Honda, Kaw, Suz, and Yamaha they were given the califacition of receration toys. So, this put them under the ruling of the CPSC. Motorcycles are the given the heading of motor vehicles, so that is why there is a difference between the 2. And I don't think that it cn be changed.
Most of you didn't do anything last year when the CPSC had a round of hearing again on ATV's. Just wait till there new ruling that will be coming has for limits. We can only guess what it will be.

The age limits were a result of those we put in office.
For those who do not remember, or who were not born at time,....Then Tennesse Senator, Al Gore, was the one who headed up the commission for the CPSC to look into the rising rate of ATV accidents of minor children.
I have had Democrats on this forum flame me over and over for this........but I promise you, it is very true.
What will happen when another elected official thinks he can dictate what we do??
I feel that the parent should be responsible for deciding what his youngster should ride BUT on the same token, that parent has to be responsible enough to be sure that his kid is safe.
I wouldn't put my 7 year old daughter on a 600lb Prairie if she rode better than I do. It wouldn't be sensible. I would feel comfortable putting her on say a Breeze........a quad that is surely over the 900cc CPSC reconmendation.
It's a situation that I feel common sense should play a key role.
By the way, this is basically the same rule of thumb used in the dirtbike market. Sure, alot of dealers do not care, but I WILL NOT sell a CRF450 dirtbike to ANYONE who has never rode a dirtbike........and nor will I sell a TRX450R to someone who has never ridden a quad before. Some you don't like this, I know, but I don't have to sell it to them, and it doesn't hurt business. 25 years says alot and more than anything else.......it proves that I'm doing the right thing.

I'm 22, 6'7" tall, and rode an XR50 last May. BR>
My parents are what determined what I rode and when, not some sticker on the plastic.

On the subject of lowered footpegs-- that seems like a really bad idea. I was riding my friend's Banshee and bottomed out the suspension on sand and my toe happened to be pointing down. The toe of my boot dug into the sand and started getting pulled under the peg. It felt like my foot was folded clean in half, and I'm sure there would have been broken bones if I had not been wearing some pretty sturdy boots.

i agree, i'm 14 and i'm supposed to ride a 90!!! yea right! 90!!! my knees would hit the handlebars! come on cspca (close enough) your limits are idiotic i ride a 400 like its nothing, 200 three wheeler like nothing (three wheeler is fun to ride, gets your skills back into shape after riding the quads for a while) but man...
its sad really... just sad

yeah i agree my parents what to know when im going ridding and where, when i tell them that is no problem, not the size. 90cc yeah right

I agree with the Coyote. I'm now fourty-threeteen. I feel younger already.

I would like to see the whole teenage limit changed. Why should it stop at nineteen? I want to be a teenager again! Thirtyteen, thirty-oneteen, thirty-twoteen, thirty-threeteen, thirty-fourteen, thirty-fiveteen, thirty-sixteen, thirty-seventeen, get the idea?

There is no way a child that weighs say 80lbs can handle a quad that weighs 300+ lbs no way
Sorry, but i disagree,.. If you have the time and patience to teach your kids the limits of their abilities and the atv's abilities they will progress more than you would imagine. We have 3 boys (21, 18 & 12).. The 12 yo has been riding for years, and can handle a 500 HO no probs,.. and he's only 90 lbs. It's teaching them properly that makes the difference. Here's the 12 yo on a jump 2 weeks ago.

yup i agree with all of you, these age limits are rediculous, my brother is 14 and he is suppose to ride a 90, yeah right. He rides whatever we put him on, whether it be a 300 or a 700 and he handles them all just fine. the parents should be the one making these decisions, It just wouldnt be right to force him to ride a 90 when every weekend he is going out to the garage and getting on my dads Thundercat 1000(not sure it there are age restricitionss for sleds or not we never really cared)

In WI here you take an ATV class when you are 12 and than you can drive any model. My daughter is in this now...actually tonight is their second night.

Yes, it is true that it is just a recommendation, but a lot of dealerships will NOT sell a quad to the buyer if they know that the person that is going to be riding it is underage. So, when buying a quad do NOT tell them what age the rider is. Parents need to use their own judgement to determine quad size/CC. While a youngster may think he is fully capable of riding a very large quad that is not always the case. I do believe it should be changed to a height/weight recommendations though.

Those age limit stickers are only to cover the atv makers a$$. Most areas will not ask to check kids age. If you ride with your parents, you will never get stopped.

I just purchased a couple of E-ton 90's for my younger kids and when my 13 yr old son rides it he looks like he's on a kids trike. Funny thing is I could have purchased them a CRF450 motorcycle without a problem. Go figure...........

Remember who supports the sport/riding areas when you vote. I do!

well im 15 and 6'3 but myproblem is the foot pegs my shoe size is 17 and it isvery uncomfortable to ride a anything under 300 because hard to shift.

im 15 on a lt250r, my dad "same dimensions of me" was thinkin about getting a z250.LOL im cramped enuf on my quadracer let alone that thing, i had to lower the foot pegs on my bike so i would cramp up on the long rides.and i may be 15 but i can out ride most older people around here other than a few fast guys on 250rs and bigger.

ohh all of you stop your whining.
it's not that you can't ride one until you're 16...that's just recommended. it's not a law, just a recommendation. i've been freely riding since 11 and i have never ridden a quad smaller than 250CC

I'm 14 and ride a 450r ....the age limits do suck though
Posted by: Superballs5337
the stickers are just guide lines. just like laws or rules. they are all just guide lines.

They really do need to change the age limits. I'm 6ft 210lbs and im still 14!!!
Posted by: racindrumr3
i think the age limit should be dropped to atleats 14 because my 6'4 cousin is to big to ride a little ass badger or whatever else there it is. and i know some of you chunky monkeys cant get goin on a little badger but it would be funny to see.

I feel for you linky guys....If there is to be any "rules" at all...perhaps it should be like the whole child car seat and base it upon weight. I think that would give a more accurate feel for what a child can handle....I mean my son who is 5 weighs in a whopping 43 lbs.....there's no way he's going to drive my wolverine in the next 3-4 years it would just out right control him on the ride just from the thrust to weight issue. But that's my choice...not the friggin "laws" that are brought out of someone's rear end. If he were say 40lbs heavier to weigh him around 80 yea sure no problem cause he'd have the mass to handle it. That's my 2 cents worth.

Height/weight is a definate. There is no way a child that weighs say 80lbs can handle a quad that weighs 300+ lbs no way...the machine will out weigh them at every turn and taking off and stopping...especially the turning....The bottom line though ultimately comes to the parental common sense. We that are parents must be smart about what we're putting our children onto and the potential risks involved. Not to mention we need to ultimately know our child/children's physical and mental limitations with these machines.
That's my 2 cents
