I know what you mean, my friends riding areas, which we thought was land his grampa owned, was totally destroyed by skidders and logging trucks, last time i went up there, you couldnt get over all the logs, we had some really fun ruts we went through, now there are trees laid all in them and that trail was cool, i just quit riding there and made trails on what we know wont get torn up by skidders, we have some monsterous hill-climbs there too. BTW, is that your land in your pics page?

Tell your parents and grandparents that you are very upset about them ruining the trails. The only thing that will ease your pain is a new quad (z400) paid for with some of the money from the trees. Maybe you NEED a 4x4 quad img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> to make it through all the mess they made. There's decent money to be made and it might only take 1 or 2 trees to pay for a new quad. Depending on the type of trees being cut down.

And trust me my parents, grandparents, and the loggers know how ticked off I am. I have made it very well known to them that I'm not happy. I am cutting up the tops of the tree to sell as firewood, but for $40 a quard (sp?) its a total pain in the butt. I'll be working on that forever and still be lucky if I can get a truck payment or two out of it.

My neighbor had a few acres logged and got around $18,000.00. It's not even worth doing for $2000.00. I have a friend that brings the loggers and landowners together. It's his job. When we go for a ride, all I hear is this tree is worth this much and that tree is worth that much. Ooooohh, Aaaaahh!

I guess all you can do now is move forward. Your only choice is to start cleaing up. (At least the areas you want to drive through.) Maybe you can use the brush for a camping area or something. Make a negative into a positive.

My grandparents and parents decided to have loggers coming in and log our land starting a month and a half or so ago. After seeing the damage one guy did in one day I about got sick. Now we have had 3 guys working in here for the past 2 weeks. Now almost all of my trails are destroyed The only ones that are still there are on the other side of the stream because it is too wet for the skidder to get across. So out of 15 acres of trails, 10 are gone Anybody else have this happen to them? and got any good ideas for having some fun in a what once was a forest but now is an area with a bunch of tree tops, stumps, and ruts? Dang, I hope I get a MX track out in the back lawn, since I can't have a XC track now

Posted by: SuzukiZ250Kid

Yeah, I got way more room, but what fun is open almost flat space?? I'm gonna hopefully figure out some way to have some kind of track or trail out there. I was already mad because in NY we have 62 acres of trails and now I'm down to 15 already. And it is going to take me at least through the summer to get all the tops out of there. It looks like a tornado came through. Luckily my family owns a landscaping company so we have 2 compact tractors to pull logs out and do some minor clean up. But it still makes me mad, 15 acres of awesome trails GONE. Oh well, if I get a HUMMER I can always fit that down there.

Yeah, I'd like to have an MX track, and our neighbor has a runway for his planes, so I've already got a 2000ft drag strip. I just really love XC. I was going to race the GNCC's starting in Steele Creak this year. And sorry I'm doing so much complaining, just had to vent because last week it was raining and today the guys decided to come in with the skidder and rutted everything up and made things 10 times worse.

Yeah, thats our land in my pics. I wish I had some more pics of the rest of our land before it was logged. I've got a digital camera now, so I've just gotta upload the new pics sometime. The area where the jump is in my pics wasn't affected, but about 50 feet beside that is where they are pulling out all the logs and loading them. I'll take some good pics tomorrow of what things look like now and load them on my page or my website.

Glenlivet, I was thinking the exact same thing. It seems so stupid to me to destroy those woods for that little amount of money. I can see my grandparents doing it because they are getting around $10,000 because they have bigger trees, but the $2000 for what we had doesn't seem worth it to me. And we have checked around and all of the loggers and mills are getting pretty much the same rate, so we aren't getting screwed as far as that goes. Also I think a lot of our wood is gum and pine, and not a whole lot of big oaks.

Posted by: SuzukiZ250Kid

Yeah, the deal was negotiated, but they were supposed to select cut it, not almost clear cut it. And from most of the select cutting operations I have seen they didn't make nearly as much of a mess. I took some pics and I'll post them on my pics page soon.

Posted by: SuzukiZ250Kid

Hey, check out my pics page. I got a couple of pictures of where the loggers came through. I'll try getting some more up later this week. You can definately see that I won't be getting my 4-wheeler through there any time soon.

We are cutting a lot of the smaller stuff up and using our Kubota and John Deere tractors to pull it out. The Kubota has a loader on it, so that works for pushing some of the smaller stuff out of the way. I'm hoping once spring comes around it will look better... I miss the green stuff, plants and money.
I make a bunch of money mowing lawns just from my accounts. I have one contract that is is $2,600 a year alone. And I have 3 smaller ones and am working on picking up some more for this summer when school is out. I also pick up some of the slack when my dad and uncle can't get to the lawns they have to mow.

It makes me sick too, not only because of my trails being destroyed, but also because of the beauty and trees being destroyed. I've lived in wooded areas all my life and have a lot of respect for that kind of stuff. Another thing that really made me mad was a lot of the trees that didn't get logged still got destroyed because of other trees falling on them and busting off the tops. I just hope this spring things bloom better or else I am going to be PI$$ED big time. Luckily they haven't made it across the stream yet because it is too wet and hopefully I can have a talk with them and mark off some areas that I don't want touched. Luckily it is raining all week, so they won't be able to do much work this week, and they broke the grapple on the skidder.

Posted by: SuzukiZ250Kid

Dang loggers showed up today and got the skidder fixed. My dad told them that they aren't touching anymore of our land because it wasn't worth the mess. I'm not sure what my grandparents are doing. They cut down one tree on the other side of the stream, so I guess that means they are going to start working there when it dries up. They cleared a few paths for me to get through.
My little brothers are really mad because a log "accidently" (more like carelessly) got dropped on their "fort" that they have been working on for about 2 months.

Posted by: SuzukiZ250Kid

Me and my grandpa already said they we would help them build another one. It was pretty funny tho watching my little 7 year old brother try to kick one of the logger guys after he got home from school and saw what happened.
And oh yeah, they moved my bridge made out of 4x6 and 2x8, and I CAN'T FIND IT. Guess I'm not getting across the stream any time soon. Oh well, nothing to do now except try to clean some of it up.

While I am not familiar with the relative value of wood in your area I am sure it will not deviate greatly from the industry norm. If all your parents got for several acres of woodlot is $2000 then unless it was treed with gangly little pecker poles, they got taken for a country ride. And why, unless somebody in the family was about to get whacked by a mob loan shark, would they turn their back acres into a moonscape for such a measly sum? Two grand can be spent in a weekend but the devastated acrage will last fourty years. What a stupid waste. Sorry to hear of it.

Posted by: Glenlivet

Heck, that's fun riding for a utility ATV.
Seriously though it is a lot of ugliness for 2 grand. You should have offered to cut enough lawns for the 2 grand if they leave the trails alone. Looks like you could make a project out of cutting the limbs and such to managable lengths and skidding them with your quad. Those gangly stumps could be an awful hazard though and ought to be cut off as close to the ground as possible. Even if you get the ground cover cleaned up, one of those stumps will hurt you badly if you fetch into it at speed.
Place ought to get prettier when it greens up in spring.

Sorry to hear about your land dude!!!!!!!!! I have seen this type of thing first hand also........Where I go riding in southern Missouri there are a ton of trees and a ton of loggers. Some of the loggers will sneek on to property that is private and snag some of the big trees and run!!!! They better hope I never catch um!!!! I understand that logging is not always bad, Thinning out the trees is great for the forest but when they go in and Hash the Hell out of the land it is uncalled for!!!!!!!

OK.....sorry to hear that your riding trails have been changed..........and the "loggers sneaking on to land" is what I have seen here (1000 miles from Suzukiz250Kid's area)

That sucks

Posted by: pimp250r

sorry to hear about that man, those things have happened around here too. Maybe after they log it off and the land is clear you can setup a newer even better track? You should have way more room to play with...

Posted by: pimp250r

I can see your point, that does suck. You could turn it into a MX track to practice on, and leave the wide open parts be a drag strip
if you wanted to. It can be whatever you want it to be....

Posted by: pimp250r

go for it man! don't worry about the complaining...everyone has to vent!
Believe it or not, I got better at riding when our land was logged off. It was more open and I learned better ways of handling my quad under different terrains and it extremely improved my handling skills. Whenever I rode and I'd see a stump, in my mind I'd be on a track in life and have to cut a tight corner around it(stump) and I just got better and better. Now I can outride anyone that dares step on pimp's terrain! The woods IMO is probably the best place to become greater and greater at handling, regardless of the number of trees. Maybe when the logged is done you'll be able to have a more complicated course and be even better and be able to kick more and more @ss as you ride the new terrain and extend your skills further

That seems like an awful lot of b/s for $2000...thats just trashed. Hopefully they are smart loggers and actually know sh!t, like if they ended up have to trim tree's etc etc etc. If they didn't cut like morons, it should really bloom nicely in the spring and further springs to come and make for a great track of any kind. Heck if I lived anywhere near you I'd help you clear that crap out...I grew up in the woods, it sickens me to see area's like that.

Posted by: pimp250r

lol
well, I hope you can save some nice spots or atleast get them to clear something out for you...that'd be cool

Posted by: pimp250r

that sucks man...maybe the loggers will rebuild the fort??BR>
lol, should build another one right in the middle of their path

Posted by: pimp250r

if you cant find it eventually, make em pay for it :-) hehe

My grand ma did the same thing on her farm about 15 years ago and she got almost 20000.00 for her 10 acres of trees. I will admit it did look way differnt, but it was hers to do and not my place to gripe. My grand parents bought the land and I was raised not to question or argue with my elders. The same thing is being taught to my own kids. This was in Michigan. AlaskaBoy.

I have seen the select cutting you are talking about and they marked all the trees that they did not want cut with marking tape but even now an then a tree gets in the way and they remove it to get to the prime wood. In the case of my grand ma's property they stacked all the tops in slash piles that we could burn. It was strange to see the woods we used to play in as a stump covered hillside. Oh well, she sold it a couple of years later so I did not get to hunt there anymore and I moved up here. Now you got to see what you have to play with. AlaskaBoy.
