If you see a ford with trans troubles it's usually related to lack of proper maintnance. The Ford 4R100 is very sensitive to having clean juice in her. Have it serviced at the reccomended intervals and it'll carry on for a long time. Go 90K with the factory trans fluid and you're gonna need a rebuild on the trans. The 6.0 powersmoker is the best diesel out there, IH fixed the problem with early 6.0s Just as a side note my 99 F350 with the V10 gasser is at 94K and has NEVER once had a mechanical problem. I service the trans every 30K ish miles and use synthetic motor oil at 5K intervals. I'm gonna have the injectors cleaned next week and hopefully it'll be another 100K before I have to dump any money into it. I'm a very satisfied customer but wish she were a diesel, nothing like the 20ish MPG from the smokers.

I was up to about 15 on the hwy but it's dropped significantly recently to about 12mpg. I think it's time for it's first tune up, new plugs and a fuel injector cleaning. The V10 is a great around town engine, much more getup and go than the diesels but you cant beat the diesel for fuel sipping.

I'm going to purchase a new diesel truck. Was shopping the Ford web site tonight (sure has changed since I worked on it) and they show a CrewCab and a SuperCab. I'm trying to figure out what the difference is between the two? I read EVERYTHING I could find on the site and I tried matching up photos with a description and that didn't work. It's totally silly but I could not find a hint or an explanation anywhere to clue me in!

I'm wondering if one has 4 doors with a full rear seat and if the other only has two doors with the tiny rear seat? If so, which is which? Is the crewcab the two door with small back seat?

I wouldn't bother y'all because I can call the dealer Monday, but I'm kind of interested in pricing one online tonight and I knew someone here could get me a quck answer.

Thanks,

Dave

So what are you saying, Dodge makes a 6 cylinder diesel?

Posted by: dbeck

Thanks for the good advice. I think I will be adding a tow vehicle forum here. There is obviously a lot to think about when buying a new toy hauler!

Posted by: Slinger

The new Dodge dually one-ton has a plush ride and is super quiet. The Fords are nice as well. My uncle has one with the Cobra exhaust, 4x4, chip, etc. accelerates like a sportscar at 23 miles per gallon highway. The Chevys are nice but let the Duramax prove itself for a couple of years first.

Do you need automatic or a stick. Diesel for towing is the ONLY way.

Gosh, I kinda like how they look.

They remind me of a 1950's chevy 2 door sedan only better.

I had a 02, sold it and got the 04 King Rancher f350 and I love it. Best $50,000 I have ever spent. Well that was sticker,I paid $42,000 after 5hr of dealing.

3.99% fin. I'm not rich I just need good right offs. I would not want a dually I would rip the sides off.

Anyone of you Diesel owners need to purchase a Edge power modual I have a customer I sold one to with a 03 ram and he says it is absolutely amazing not his words there was a lot of F-BOMBS dropping but it got me thinking Who needs a HEMI when you have diesel tire smoking power I will be buying a diesel next time for sure Ford or Dodge ( can't beleave I own a dodge, always been a ford man but got to love those Hemi comercials and the 20" wheels on a 1/2 ton and 345hp that is what sold me DAM 10-13MPG)

I will never own a diesel, but several of my friends have bought some of each recently. They say the Dodge rides like it has no suspension, too hard, just like the old ones. And the chevrolet is over priced. Most of them bought dodges because they say they are the cheapest (and they all agree the cheapest built).

We have the crew cab...with the 8' bed....ie..''The Limo''.....and It's the only way to go

Posted by: LTZ

64,000 on my Duramax/ Allison and not one problem. Bartlett must be a Ford fan, poor confused soul

Posted by: UBETRUN

My father just bought a 04 Dodge 2500 diesel with the Crew cab. The new Dodge Cummins diesel is much quieter than previous Cummins engines, they've gone to a common rail injector. I have a 2001 F250 V10 with the Supercab. It has rear doors but they open backwards and the front doors must be opened/closed first. The rear seat in the Super Duty with a Supercab is big enough for grown men, not anything like the rear seats in a F150, Ranger, or Yota. The Supercab is about a foot shorter than the Crew cab. Bartlett is right, don't get the Crew cab if you plan to park it in a normal parking lot. With a 8 foot bed, my Supercab is a bugger to fit in some parking lots, an extra foot would make life much harder. I don't think you can go wrong with either the new Ford or new Dodge diesel, they are both very good engines.

I've been wading through the same stuff lately. I've been comparing different models trying to figure out which is which. I wanted a 4 door because of the extra seating.

The Consumer Guide Car Comparisons book is nice to have. It also includes the Dealer Invoice prices.
The web address is www.consumerguide.com.

I had received an e-mail asking people NOT to buy gas at Exxon and Mobil stations. They figure that if a majority of people do not buy from these companies then they'll have to drop their prices to attract business. Then the others will also have to drop their prices. What the heck, I'm not going to buy from those companies. They already have enough of my money.

The Duramax trucks aren't overpriced, you just gotta work them up off invoice which these days is almost expected. My 03 listed at 48 and I paid under 40 with all the incentives.

I've been a Ford guy all my life and bought this Chevy because the Ford interior was like a combine and the gauges were an insult. I want to know actual temperature not see pictures of hot and cold and rabbits and turtles god give me a break. The Allison tranny is the best for towing with auto engine braking downhill etc. I tow doubles at 75 with this thing and it works great, and I got XM radio out through the no-reception west.

The Chevy heaters totally suck though compared to Fords.

Posted by: roosthrower

my friends last two trucks have been f-350's and he has had tranny problems with both. One was a 94 and one is an 02. I believe both had the 7.3. Bad luck I guess. I am a ford guy, but if I bought a diesel truck, I think I would get a dodge just because they are cheaper than the ford and chevy diesels.

Posted by: DragRaptor727

have you guys seen those S10s that are like dragsters? them diesels got some crazy torque!!!!!

Posted by: DragRaptor727

it was a f-350 there was a video on here a while ago, i seen a few at pismo. they smoke like crazy.

Posted by: trailrider500

Crew cab is the 4 door model... Super cab usually has no door or a small half door like, hard to explain...

glad to here your going with a ford

Posted by: trailrider500

O yeah the super cab trucks like my ranger has to very small rear seats.. The crew cab has the full seat...

the duramaxs have been having problems with their tannys lately. the new 6.0 powerstroke had a few problems but it seems they have been worked out now. the dodge still has a few tranny problems plus a terrable resale, just don't hold theri value very good. my company truck is a duramax with an auto and has been in the shop 7 yimes in the last 9 months for trans problems. i haven't owned a 6.0 powerstroke but has 4 different 7.3 powerstrokes all with standards and never had any problem out of any. the best milage i ever got was 19 on the hwy out of the powerstrokes and 17 out of the duramax although it is loaded with a toolbed and crain. go with the crewcab. i owned one extended cab superduty and one day my son got in the back seat and right when he went to shut his door my wife shut hers and made for a nice body shop bill! if you shut the front door first and the back seat passenger isn't thinking and trys to shut his it will bend the edge of the front door.

that is a dumb question why even buy a ford ? lol

Posted by: badrap02

buy a dodge 2 less cylinders and almost as much power!!!!!! oh and better gas mileage lol

Posted by: badrap02

bad tranny, well see when i tow my 30 ft toy haler full right past your ford lol j/k

Posted by: badrap02

yeah, the cummins they use is a 6 cylinder the ford is a great diesel also

Posted by: rescuediver

dbeck, go with the crewcab, it has 2 full size doors and seats. The super cab is the extended cab with suicide doors in the rear, to enter the rear seat you need to open the front doors to open the rear doors. Also, the rear seats are smaller and lower then a regular seat. So an adult or large kid will be unconfortable on long rides. The powerstroke is a proven engine/trans set up. Good luck on your purchase

Posted by: rescuediver

I think dragrapter is referring to the new chevy srs, it's a 2 seater high performance truck. Though I seriously doubt you will see anyone towing anything behind it. I know around central ca. they are going for around $50,000

Posted by: rescuediver

Dragrapter, there's a big difference between the f350 and a chevy s10. But, you are right, the f350 is a bitchun truck

Posted by: rescuediver

I have an 03 f350 with the 6 liter diesel in it and my father has an 04 cummins and i am getting better mileage and more hp and torq--- He is pissed and wishes he got the ford

Posted by: fidge1

42,000 financed or cash-- i wish it came in a dually

Posted by: seanDyfz

i'm quite happy w/ my F-350..its got the 7.3 liter, not the new 6.0, but I have some engine work done..Its sitting on 37" mickey's right now and I pull my trailer just fine..no break downs in 3 years, and no problems besides that...the suspension lift made it a little stiffer, but thats the price to pay i guess
either way...I like the ford....its not noisy, mucho power..etc. etc

Posted by: seanDyfz

If you've got the money, get then chevy duramax w/ allison...top of the line (right now)

but i totalled one up and it was over 42 grand, so i decided to go w/ a fully loaded f-350 king ranch and its comfy as hell..looks nice too.
cheaper as well, but i got a good deal on mine

Posted by: seanDyfz

what s-10s? new ones? I'm pretty sure they discontinued it..its like a colorado or whatever it is..

Posted by: seanDyfz

oh i've seen them..................................ugly..................

Posted by: seanDyfz

i dont really care for em..only seen em tho in commercials....but i do like fords new stang comin out..that looks good

in 2005 or 6 when the gt cobra comes out, they said it'll have 394 hp stock, base model w/o more cobra perf. stuff

Posted by: seanDyfz

they've been rated as best compared to fords and dodges.
