adam- If you go alpine give rod a shout. I personally think alpine is a pain. Seems like they do not interface with other brands easily. Anyway Rod set me up with alpine main amps, cd changer, head unit etc. Speakers/TV/DVD/subwoofers cheap for my 4 door dodge. Rod has a car stereo store you know.

If you can come up with $50 do yourself a favor and step into a whole different level. Go here:

Nakamichi CD-400

Ok, I'm buying a head unit with my christmas money, and needed some advice. I'm going to get a pretty nice one, but not like the top of the line type. I have around $300 to work with, maybe a little more. Just post what you have, or what you would get. I was looking at an Alpine one for $279. thanks

dang tate, sounds like you got a kickin system there. Powerbase? never heard of them. how much did you pay for your Amp? I'm just putting in a head unit, and some lil 6x8's for now, cause I want to get another car and switch it to that car. I saw some of those pioneer premiere units, looked nice.

Hey Mark, I gave Rod a call a while back, he said he'd give me about 25% off whatever I wanted, but I'm thinking I might just go get it at Car Toys, becasue they will install it for me free. Also, I have been looking at The Kenwood excelon X569 and I think I like it better than the Alpine ones. It's about $299. If I can get a little more money saved up, Ultimate Electronics has Rockford Fosgate 2 chanel 900watt amps on sale for $159.

I have to get a head unit that has a preamp in it already, becasue I probably won't use an amp unless I decide to get some subs. I'm not wanting the absolute loudest, best sound possible, just pretty decent.

DeuceRooster is right I would go NAKAMICHI as well, I own a Car Audio shop in Canada I carry lots of different brands but my Nak sales are the most overall, dollar for dollar the the CD-400 would be your best unit at that price range doesn't have a shiny display with lots of colors but has very good SQ. Now If you want a really good deck I could sell you a DENON DCT Z-1 for a mere $4300 Canadian LOL. If I would go with a # 2 it would be KENWOOD simple reason there very reliable and sound good too, there very well priced. Just don't buy a motorized display they have plastic gears and sprokets that will strip and wear out in time so usually that will wind up being your first repair. My 2 cents. Hope it helps!! P.S. if your looking for SQ type speakers go with FOCAL my personal all round favorite!!!

If you want sound quality and features, no doubt, go Alpine. Get one that is NOT self-amplified, you lose sound quality with pre-amplified head-units.

Then you will need an amp for your mids and tweets and an amp for the shakers. But if SQ is your thing, don't go pre-amplified and get some good highs and mids, as they are AS important as sub selection.

In my 2002 Nissan Altima V6 (245 HP, 5 speed, 14.8 1/4 stock, , i have the factory BOSE head unit (I kept it because of the 6-disc in dash changer), wired with Fusion heavy gauge wiring kit.

I have 8 speakers total (w/ out the subs). I kept the 2 Bose tweets in the pillars (cuz they are awesome), I swapped the Bose 6 1/2 for Clarion 1-way mids in the front doors and Clarion 2-ways in the rear doors. I switched the factory bose 6x9's on the rear shelf with Fusion 6x9s. These are all powered by 1 Pheonix Gold QX amp (Got it for free).

And to cap things off, I have 2 Power Acoustiks FUBR-12(12" sub w/ 700w RMS and 1800w peak, very heavy/high quality sub) in single-sealed boxes. Check them out here, these are powered by a Class-D Orion sub amp.

SQ is awesome, the highs are incredible and the bass shakes your brain to a pulp, but I'm having rattling problems (I do have some Dynamat in the trunk and doors) , the rear shelf is vibrating against the rear window and you can really hear it, also my license plate and trunk latch are rattling like crazy. Looking for a solution.

Good luck on your purchase
