The Ford 4.6 engines are smooth and almost indestructible. The 5.4 is the same design and makes a lot more power though. I had a 97 w/4.6 and 99 w/5.4. Both very good trucks, and safe in a crash! (found this one out by example) Never had any problems with either, and used both to tow my 22' fifth wheel and quad trailer behind that (pulling doubles).

I am a mechanic.....I have to tell you I am pretty open when it comes to Ford's and GM (Never Dodge I have to say that the OHC design in the Ford is a nightmare!!! They also have a bad habbit of leaking oil from the headgaskets externally. Most people that like these OHC Ford new generation engines have not had them over the 100,000 mark; by time they get there most can plan on replacing the aprox. mile long timing chain(s). I tore one down 2 months ago with 120,000 miles that ate all the lobes off the right side cam for no reason, our shop always maintained this engine. If you are pretty open to to Diesel. Ford's PowerStroke is the best! V8 intercooled one, Not the new V6 version!
