I want to clear up some misconceptions about the avalanche. I have a 2002 2500, yes it has the 8100. It has never leaked water, the cladding has not fallen off, or faded. You can't get the 2500 WBH, that's without body hardware, as of yet. I have 50,000 miles on mine, it gets parked outside every night, Its been to Florida twice and South Carolina 4 times. The sunroof has never leaked. I get around 14 mpg on the highway, and 12 in town driving. I have the 4.10 rear gear, so I like to put myself back in my seat while driving between stoplights. Its the best dang vehicle I have every owned. It does alot of things well. I wasnt crazy about the looks at first, but now I really like it. It pulls my 20 ft trailer with my old car or quads so well, in fact I forget its back there going down the interstate. If you buy one it will be a good choice.

MadDog,
I get 12 in town, 14 on the highway. You are correct about the Avalanche/Suburban sharing frames, which are now hydro-formed. All the truck forums I visit all point to the 8100 running better with the 4.10 rear, actually getting better milage, from what I understand puts the 8100 more into its optimal rpm range for efficiency. I can tow my 20ft trailer with my old Camaro on it up over the Zilwaukee in tow/haul mode, it doesnt even downshift with the cruise on 65. If the wife never drove my truck I would have bought a crew cab with the duramax. She felt that truck, even with the shortbox felt alot harder to manuever than the AV. I feel all the big 3 make a good pulling truck as long as you buy the correct engine/trans package for your needs.

Avalanche, hummer h2 - glorified suburban. avalanche has a weak chassis, not a flame, just a fact. H2 is much more rigid, but still built on a suburban. 5.3L is underpowered in the 1/2 ton avalanche, 6.0L is pretty good in the H2. 8.1L makes mad power, but you are looking at about 9-12 mpg and its for the 3/4 ton avalanche only. which btw has better frame / towing capacity
tahoe - mini suburban. 5.3L is a good powerplant for this truck, 6.0L would be better, good towing capacity.
expedition - big brother of explorer. still underpowered, soon to get engine upgrade. Also good towing capacity with IRS setup. Lots of new options availible.
Ford truck - 1/2 ton - new 2004 models are great. lots of hp (300 or so), best in class towing capacity, nicest interior ive ever seen in any kind of pickup.
- 3/4 ton - old style for now, good trucks, but outdated and underpowered now. still had best in class towing and torque.
- superduty 3/4 and 1 ton - excellent trucks, great towing capacity. 7.3L diesel was good. 6.0L diesel has some problems, should be fixed by end of year.
6.8L v10 makes great hp, but similar gas issues as with chevy 8.1L v8. Best towing capacity of the vehicles you listed.
Interiors on the Chevy trucks are very comfortable. Some cheapness in the plastic interiors but its that way with some ford products too. Ford interiors also pretty nice. Expedition not quite up to par with the chevrolets, but very nice. Hummer would be nicest, followed by the new for f150's. then the chevys, the expedition, and the sd fords. but of course, they are heavy duty trucks, they dont have to be as refined.

I base everything i say on these forums on my own first hand experience and what i have personally seen. A friend of the family has a 2003 Chevy 3/4 ton crew cab longbox 4x4 LT and it was running about 10.8 most of the time. Lucky 13!

So as we start back down we had to pull back over again beacause it was the H2's turn...lol There were about 10 coming up.. They looked cool to, but not like the Tanks that went up a few seconds ago...
Yea they made the H2's more affordable for the middle class people..
Since when is a glorified suburban with a base price of almost 50k affordable for the middle class???

RiDeNrEd03, why isnt the 03-04 Chevy Silverado 2500HD in your choices? 6.6L Duramax Diesel or 8.1L are very powerful. You want luxury correct? Well every magazine I read that has the Ford F250, Dodge 2500, and the Silverado 2500 competing the Silverado always has the best ride and is the most comfortable. Some people dont like the front ends, I dont specially but when it comes down to it, its got enough to back it up. I have heard of problems with the new 6.0L Powerstroke, I have never heard any complaints about the 6.6L Duramax. The H2s are very nice but the gas mileage? DAMN!!!!! If you got about 120-135 grand get the H1 heh.
Posted by: Eiger376
People, yall aint going to like the H2 because it isnt capable of doing off roading like the H1. Well GM dint intend on making it the greatest off roading machine. Its a Hummer for people like us that can drive on the road and actually afford the damn thing. Hummer H2s are very nice vehicles and matter of fact GM has got a Hummer H3 coming soon. The H2 doesnt have IRS and the ground clearance like the H1 so yea theres ya problem right there.

whatever you do,,,get atleast a 3/4 ton
and if you get an h2 ill make fun of you

Hey I am looking to get a new car within the next 5-6 months. What I am considering are as follows, (no specific order), Chevy Avalanche, Chevy Tahoe, Ford Expedition, Ford truck (150, 250 desiel), or a Hummer H2. I like all of these a whole lot. They all fit my needs. My needs would be luxury, hauling, cargo, towing, some passenger room and of course V8 power. What are some of your opinons regarding these. And please leave out or dont reply if you are one of those bias or overly loyal owners. i.e. chevy is better.....ford....blah blah. I'm not here to argue that one is better than the other. I personal like both manufactors and think they both have good models just some are better in certian classes of vehicles. Theres not much that isnt made well anymore. Thanks for your time and opions....
Posted by: RiDeNrEd03
Yeah those ford desiels are first class thats for sure. (F250 King Ranch Desiel sweet!!!) I dont like the Avalacnhe with the body cladding, I would get it without the hardware on the sides. But if they are prone to leak then I defintely want top stay away from them. Where do they leak from the midgate? Importh8 you said you work at a chevy dealer, what do you think about the tahoe, have you had an expericen with the H2s?
Posted by: RiDeNrEd03
Quadsportin how long have you had your avalanche? And the GM 5.3 V8 is all the engine I need. I dont really like the Yukon line as much as I don the Tahoe/Suburban line. Thanks for the replies, keep them coming. Its always good to know others opions on such things.

First off I think quad queen is a freeak! And whatever i get and drive Chevy or not, will be hot if you know what i mean. What does everyone think about the Toyota Tundra (quad cab {new for 04} of course, the other style is ugly) and the New nissan Titan? Choices choices choices...
by the way quad queen when i pull a holeshot my rubber is in the air img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif" border="0">img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">

Get an Avalanche w/o the body cladding. We never had any leaks or problems and it will tow anything with the 8.1!
Posted by: quadsportin
The Avalanche has been great so far the biggest problem was a flat tire.
We have had ours since early 2002 and havnt had any problems with it. The midgate has never leaked and always worked fine.
You can fit a Suzuki Q-Sport 230 in the bed no problem w/o the midgate unfolded. I admit the inside can get pretty dirty with the midgate down, but nothing a good vacuuming cant fix. The 8.1L is a gas guzzler- a very powerful gas guzzler! But I've heard theres plenty of power in the 5.3L.

AAWW come on now your just tryin to make it sound bad I mean we're gettin at least 13mpg out of ours.

H2's have no where near the off-road ability, and in my opinion, good looks of the H1. It is basically a new body on a suburban frame.
I know some people like em' but I'd rather get a suburban and put some money into the off-road department than spend 50k on a stock H2.

i apologize if anyone was offended by my remark about the h2 being made for women. but, i do believe that an H2 is a watered down H1 for posers. and i have evidence of this.
why H2's suck
if it were an H1, there would only be a scratch on the bumper, and that wouldn't even be there if there was a brush gaurd on it. and the dodge ram would have been demolished.
not to sure about this, but, i heard that if you own a small business, then the government will help pay for your vehicle if it is over a certain price. and an H1 would be over that certain price, so open up shop and get an H1
Posted by: JayBird04
sorry about getting so defensive. i guess gm wanted to build a hummer that would appeal to a wider range of customers. i just don't like it because it isn't as rugged as the H1. I would love to take a hummer off-roading through mud and streams and whatnot. just my opinion.
Posted by: BigScary
I wouldn't own a tundra or a chevy after what I saw at a convention that I went to..........the frames on the two are soo flemsy that you can make them bend just by pushing on them with 2 fingers......that is bad.....I would hate to think that I had to drive that every day.........
granted I do drive a chevy now..........I won't buy another one......

I'd rather be in a vehicle that absorbed the crash by crushing than one that didn't give at all.
Crumpling = good thing.

How much did the frames bend when you pushed on them?
Was there an example of a frame that didn't bend?

For what it's worth I've owned both Chevy and Ford. I've had a lot of Chevy's...El Caminos, 1/2 tons, and one 3/4 ton. All of my Chevy's had small blocks, except the 3/4 ton (454 gas lover), and were all extremely reliable with the exception of one that spit a rod with unknown milage. Anyway, check out my page it shows my current ride. F350 7.4L Powerstroke diesel, dully, 4:10's, 4x4, completely loaded. It's a beast and will pull anything I put behind it....almost. One problem....it ate a transmission at 88k. I can't completely blame the truck becuase I wasn't the original owner and I'm not sure if the tranny was neglected or not. Still, it was a little dissapointing and costly.
And for the record, if a chic digs your wheels....she's not diggin you. When I was in high school I drove some pretty hedious trucks but I was never lonley. Party on baby!!
Posted by: Just4Kicks
One thing to keep in mind.....DIESEL! Those that hate it don't own it.
Good stuff
1. unmatched torqe
2. excellent milage
3. longevity, longevity, longevity
4. they sound cool
Bad stuff
1. don't get too close to emty out in the sticks....not everyone sales diesel
2. they take lots of oil.....mine takes 15-1/2 qts.
3. not near as fast off the line
Most people don't buy them to race so who cares about 3.
Both Ford's Power Stroke and Chevy's Duramax are outstanding engines! I agree with IMPORTH8R though....if you get the Power Stroke get the 7.4L. I've heard of some dissapointment with the 6.0L. Let them work the bugs out.
Posted by: IMPORTH8R
Working at a Chevrolet dealer, I can tell you stay away from the Avalanche. Unless of course you like water leaks and plastic trim than fades, falls off. BTW, if you damage one of those bed panels they are like $700 a piece. Ouch!
Posted by: IMPORTH8R
Most o f the problems we have seen are midgate seals and the trim around the midgate glass splitting/cracking. I agree that the "naked" Avalanche looks better but... I just don't dig these "yuppie trucks",no offense meant to anyone in particular. I just don't get the whole thing about making the bed so short and useless that you have to put in a midgate or one of those flippy bed extender things like they put in Supercrews, Sport tracs, Or the four door s-10's. Trucks should be used as such and personally I prefer to keep the dirt and gravel outsde in the bed, not all over the inside. Sorry for the rant. The Tahoe/Sub are nice vehicles and relativly problem free. The 5.3L is a good solid engine, very reliable thus far. I would pass on the 8.1L as they don't pass up many gas stations and have a large appetite for oil. Seems most of the ones I see for oil changes are 2 or 3 quarts low at every change, and these are low mileage units. You absolutely can't go wrong with a powerstroke, but I would stay away from the 6.0L PSD at least for a while until they get all the bugs worked out. It is a good engine, lots of power , but as with all new things they have had some problems with it. I can't say too much about the H2 as we have only had two on or our lot and they were gone very fast. HTH
P.S. I was a FORD man long before I went to work for "the others".
