I have a 2000 Tailgator and a 2002 F350 4x4 Crew Cab short box with Turbo powerstroke diesel. The Tailgator is heavy and the drag from its semi-trailer style rear makes it a real pain to run 70mph. On a recent trip to SD it became apparent that this is not a good freeway machine for anything other then flat land. The Chevy and Ford engines are pretty much the same in the power department. I wouldn't buy another Tailgator with the overhead bed in the rear. I have seen some pretty nice "haulmark" style enclosed utility trailers modified into great toy boxes. Full complement of kitchen bed and bath. The prices are a lot lower than the RV style trailer/taoyboxes also. I'll sell this thing and go that route myself.

My wife and I are looking at purchasing a toy box.

Does anyone have any suggestions? We have looked at Salems and Extremes. Truck is a Chevy 1500 so it can't be too big.

Thanks,

Scrmblrman,

We are probably going to pickup a new one. Right now, I am trying to talk my wife into getting a 02' Chevy 2500 HD with a duramax/allison combo.

I found a bunch of new ones at trader.com but i'm not sure what brands are good, etc... Ontario is about a 10 hour drive from here. I'm going to keep looking...

Thanks for the good info Whodat! How long is your Tailgator?

So, do you have to modify the standard hauler on your own? I would have no idea how to do something like that.

Thanks for the info Scramblerman!

I think your truck should do fine but more power can never hurt. I have not yet seen the Baja brand and I'm not sure of our price range. I really like the Extremes. Of course, the 24' Extreme was 25K+. I want one that can hold at least 3500+ lbs. Some of the cheaper ones that I was looking at only hold 1400 lbs. With quads, fresh water, gas, beer, and food, 1400 lbs is not very much.

Most of the nicer toyboxes come with a 70-100 gallon water tank and up to a 35 gallon gas tank.

Water weights 8.3 lbs/gallon and gas wieghts 6.2 lbs/gallon.

I have two Z-400's and my friend also has a DRZ-400 dirtbike. He always tags along and he is planning on buying a quad.

Yeah, 21 feet sounds about right. I know that some of them have pop out tents but I have mixed feelings about them. If I go out to sand mountain, I don't want to be up listening to quads all night if I am trying to sleep. A full enclosure may be a better idea.

My wife and I both enjoy the Z's. I sold my 99 Scrambler 500 4x4 about a year ago and my wife sold her Rancher ES 2x4 around the same time. We missed our quads so we decided to go a little more sporty with the Z's. The shifting is the hardest thing to adjust to but the quad is so light, you can toss it around like no tomorrow.

I'm shopping for an enclosed trailer (no living quarters) myself now.
Go to Roadsters.com eRaptoid found that link for me, They have links to a bunch of trailer maufactures & dealers. Some of them have online quotes too (I've recieved about 10 quotes most the day after you send them) I'll save about $1000 on my trailer by buying direct from the factory & another $500-$1000 on delivery (depending on distance) by picking it up at the factory.

14mins, what kind of trailer are you looking for? I found a guy about 50 miles from Tulsa that has killed everyone's price on a carhauler!

Ash,
I just started looking for one to. There should be a lot of dealers and such in CA. I saw one on the internet they are in Ontario, CA there number is 909-983-9647. They seemed to have good prices. I am new to these toyboxes too. Are you looking for new or used? If you here any good deals let me know? Good luck

Ash, That is where I got that number off of the rvtrader site. I called them yesterday and talked to Jerry sounded like a nice guy. Tried to get him to send info to me but didn't. They don't have a web site and he claims they are one of the larges dealers. They sale the Baja brand and some other ones. I am not to familiar with any of the different brands. Were I live there is only one place that sells them and for a 21' Layton it costs from $15,000 that is more than I want to spend. I might give Jerry a call again soon and ask more questions. The problem is I don&39;t know what to ask. That will be nice if you get that Chevy. I hope my &39;99 Ford F150 5.4L will pull a toy hauler. Keep me posted. If you want you can email me.

I am surprised to see that there isn&39;t much talk on this site about toy haulers. It is very good on ATV stuff. The weekend warrior brand seems to be popular. How many cycles do you have? How much does water weigh? My friend told me once but I forgot.

I have heard the Z-400's are nice a lot of Scrambler owners are switching to them. I am looking for about a 21&39; toy hauler that is big enough for my wife, I and dogs.
