Well here in Pa most of the Poker runs are put on by Vol fire dept's and sportsman clubs. FIRST ,They are not a race(although some people ride like they are)Its just a ride usually about 25-30 miles long in various terrain(hills, water holes,Tight wooded trails) Usually start around 9-11 am have all day (5-6pm) to ride(some go around twice)You ride to two or three checks points on the trail where they usually have a bag of poker chips with some marked to win money. At the check points you tell them your number and draw a chip if you get a winner they pay a cash amount(this varies as the amount of money taken in)usually 5-20 dollars or a prize(hat, shirt, etc)The first check point is the registration which is 10-15 dollars some as high as 30 dollars. Last check point is the finish or registration again.Checking numbers gives them an idea of how many riders are still on the course. Some rides have people who ride around all day to look for people who break down. They usually will haul a quad or bike back from the check points if someone can get there after breaking down. It is a great way for some of our small fire dept's to make money to buy new equipment. If there is a ride in your area check it out they are a blast.

I haven't been on a ATV poker run, but have been on a BUNCH of motorcycle poker runs, & suppose they would be set up about thew same.
in poker there are 5 cards, right, well that is how a poker run is set up
in the motorcycle world a poker run is used to get money for a charity, or downed bro. the way it works is this: you pay about 10 bux or so, for entry and you get a written list of the stops, and a sheet to score your cards on, and you reach in a bag and draw out a card, it is scored on your sheet, then you follow the directions to the next stop, pick up a card, score it, & go on, the stops can be anywhere, we have had them in parking lots of convienience stores, or some folks have them at resturants, or bars, depends who sets them up..at the last stop you pick up your 5th card, and may have the option of buying additional cards, or not, may have the option of a 50/50 drawing (50% goes to charity, 50% goes for payout prizes) or not, once again depends on how it is set up, you may have lunch at the last stop, or not, once again depending on how it is set up, it may start and end at the same place, or start in one place and end in another, depending on how it is set up, but all of them (poker runs) have registration at a set time, and the first bike out & last bike out at a certain time, as well as last bike in at the finish, it is not a race, or a large group ride, motorcycle poker runs are usually about 100 miles, or a tank of gas, so I suppose the ATV poker runs are less milage, but still about a tank of gas, it is a fun way to give back a little to the community or charity, and enjoy yourself.
