Me. Hey, I'm going up to silver lake with a bunch of buddies July 21-23. Anybody that wants to meet us up there is welcome to join us. I'm from Fowler, it's about 20-30 miles from Lansing.

I'm from Hillsdale. We usually ride in Ohio & Indiana. Too much bull$hit to ride the DNR trails. They SUCK anyway!

I live in South Bend IN now but im from the UP and ride in MI all the time.

There are over 400 Michigan members in MATVA or the Mich All Terrain Vehicle Assoc. We ride about three wk ends out of EVERY month,winter/spring/fall OR summer months. The web site is miatvassoc.com.

Click on TRAIL TALK and than click on WHERE TO RIDE.You guys should have NO PROBLEM finding Mi riders to ride with you.We just had 42 ATV riders on a Poker run in Hulbert Mi last wk end, there were quads stretched over a MILE long in my group. We had a BLAST!

We're over here in the Kalamazoo/B.C. area and are 'quietly' trying to educate others on the 'state' of our present trail system.

All talk of merely widening and improving WHAT WE HAVE for 'everybody' in our great state (yes, yoopers pay taxes too!) has been systematically ignored for several reasons.

1) Motorcycle clubs believe it is their god-given right to have narrow trails availiable for themselves ONLY and refuse to discuss widening the trail system. The atv club's leadership covers their a$$ on this issue by ensuring that these matters are never discussed between both club's members or their own. Result? The 'maintained' width of the trail system 'stays' at a mere 50" (how wide is your quad?) and both clubs benefit from spending the 'least' amount of their 'maintenance' money chopping the same tree's branches every couple of years.

2) Both club's leaders keep their members separate from the other by refusing to maintain trails TOGETHER (...."but, but, THEN we'd have to split the money!"....)

Now, you may say, wait a minute. If the motorcyclists don't want wider trails; WHY would they want to build/maintain wider trails with the atvers? Again, the atv club leaders refuse to make the cycle leaders admit publicly WHAT they believe in; AND go as far as to say that they 'have no idea' WHAT the cyclists future view of the trail system is! ("but believe me, us leaders are very 'close'")

Bottom line is this: The minute the leader of a motorcyclist group is forced to PUBLICLY declare what their organization actually believes in regarding trail width AND expansion (see the Tomahawk Trail's designation/description) there is suddenly going to be a major conflict with many rider's view of what a state-funded 'multi-use' trail system should be all about.

As a result, the atv group leaders (who have bellied up to the same funding trough with the understanding that these wider widths would never be discussed 'publicly', if they could help it) have a 'member confidence' problem if they let the cyclists get away with keeping trails like the Tomahawk and 'motorcycle only' trails maintained this same narrow way forever. (we wouldn't want to upset 'our good friends' would we?)

Both sides refuse to seek funding and sources for heavy equipment that they BOTH can clean up after to widen these trails even 'one at a time'.

The biggest problem is that MORE ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE IS BEING DONE EVERY DAY in large part because certain trails in certain areas are almost impassable with a quad. This (which I wonder sometimes who really cares about) causes a lot of people to 'find' a place to ride that their kids are less likely to 'smuck a tree' on.

4) There has been a request in, for a long time, to the state of Michigan for a SE Michigan riding area. I realize many of you are FROM SE MI. and may say "GREAT!; who really cares about the rest of the state riding reasonably wide trails if 'I' have some out my front door?". From the sounds of your comments above; many of you don't ride our system ANYWAY, because of it's state of disrepair?

Whoever supports this local project BEFORE taking care of the major 'state' problems outlined in reason #1; will reveal a lot about the integrity and selfishness of those that enjoy our sport AND believe in the the health of the trail system as a whole.

4) No club has ever purchased a piece of heavy equipment beyond a 'pull behind trail grader' in this state's history. The ATV clubs feel that purchasing graders first and 'grading' trails close to SE MI. (for their own benefit) is justified; as a good portion of the balance of state trails aren't wide enough to even attempt hauling a grader down anyways. As a result, these 'other' trails will(have) become not only dangerously narrow; but 'whooped out' to boot!

Sorry for the long comment; but I truly wonder sometimes who believes in what's best for 'themselves' NOW and who instead cares about maybe STARTING to build a trail legacy, THAT THEY MAY NEVER SEE COMPLETED; for children, the elderly and the handicapped, they may never know enjoyed it.

Crash,

What trails (areas) do you consider the most scenic and fun to ride when traveling from S. Bend?

Thanks,

Plymouth, MI. I am not too far from you Z400man. Just about 50-60 miles. Where do you ride?

Posted by: Obud

Castampe,

I am from Plymouth as well. Do you ride anywhere around the area? I have been trying to find a place to ride LEGALLY around the area. We go up north every other weekend to go ride in Mio, Grayling, Kalkaska, or Silver Lake. It would be great to be able to get out of work and go ride for an hour or two.

Posted by: LTZLESS

I live in the thumb. We usually go to Rose city or Mio. Around home we have gravel pits to ride. Some we get kicked out of if there gets to be to many riders showing up. No real disputes just people worried about liability issues, so now alot of people have there own track.

Obud i have not forgot about sending you pics. I just want to get some better ones.

castampe, how is the law around St. Helen? I rode there eight years ago and got a ticket for no spark arrestor. I have not been back because usually someone was not 100% legal. Now that we have switched back to quads we have thought about going back but we talked to a forest guy last year at bull gap and he said they are jerks over there. I know right now on my Z i am legal but my cousin's ex is to loud. I also ride with a banshee and he just bought the hush kit for that but i think he is still going to be to loud. I would like to ride there but i don't want a bunch of tickets.

I am seeing tons of people from michigan, lets find out how many their really are.

I'm from Jackson...which is located at the bottom middle.

Posted by: Z400man

Sounds very close to me. Within like 100 miles.

Posted by: Z400man

I ride mostly close to home.

I have 3 friends with full out motocross tracks as well.
Havent rode much lately since my LT has given me nothing but problems...and the back shock is almost completely gone so the only riding I can really do now is light trail.
I just graduated so Im gonna be gettin about 2000 bucks from relatives and stuff...and hoping to god I can get that damn Z400.

REDRIDER-I race my camaro at Milan...not the 4wheel. But when I get the Z I will be riding a lot...planning that trip would be a good idea...maybe to the dunes.

Michigan riders,

Posted by: castampe

I am from Plymouth and I am taking the Z to Milan next Wednesday...then I will be able to see what its really got.

Posted by: castampe

OBUD,
I HAVE A FEW FRIENDS THAT RIDE BEHIND THE HOME DEPOT AT 275 AND FORD ROAD. YOU JUST NEED TO STAY ON THE PROPERTY. WE ALSO GO UP TO MT. MORRIS, 1 EXIT NORTH OF FLINT. IT IS OK AS LONG AS YOU PASS THE dB TEST AND HAVE A SPARK ARRESTOR, OR A COMPLETLY STOCK MACHINE.

MY PARENTS HAVE A HOUSE IN HIGGINS LAKE WE GO UP AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, WE RIDE MOST OF THE TIME AT ST. HELENS, THERE ARE SOME NICE TRAILS THERE.

redrider707,

I have not had the suzuki out on the track yet. I planned on going this past wednesday, but never got the quad set up with a kill switch in time. I did however go and watch others practice. I will forsure be out there to watch today, and will be ready to practice and race next week.

Posted by: castampe

ltzless,

I have been riding at St. Helens for about 3 years now and have only seen 1 DNR officer. That was this past Memorial Day Weekend. All he did was wave to us, and I have a highly modified banshee, not legal at all. He was stopping other people, more trucks than anything. I love the trails, you get a little bit of everything there. Tight trails, open trials, sand hills, etc. etc. etc.

Posted by: castampe

I too was impressed. It needs a few adjustments on the suspension, but it definitely has the power to run well. There seems to be a lot of potential. Unfortunitly the axle is bent. The best word I got this morning was 3 weeks for a new one...

Posted by: castampe

I will definitely be there next week, I will catch up more with you so we can BS a bit more...

Posted by: castampe

i just priced out lonestar A-Arms, a axle and a swingarm, it came to a little over $2000.

Posted by: castampe

I ended up in 3rd after the 1st race, and 6th in the second race. 5th overall. We will see how tomorrow goes...

Posted by: castampe

I GOTTA TELL YOU I AM SUPRISED AS HELL WITH THE Z ON THE TRACK. IT JUST HOOKS UP GOOD AND HAS ALL THE POWER AND SPEED NEEDED FOR CONDITIONS SUCH AS LAST WEEK. I REALLY WOULD LIKE A SET OF SHOCKS FOR IT.

I'LL BE THERE TONIGHT, HOPEFULLY A LITTLE EARLIER THAN THE LAST 2 TIMES...
