You will find that your quad will run better on 92 or 93 gas. The manual will say that it is OK to use 87, but it will run a little better. The cost is only going to be about 20 cents more per gal. If you have major engine work, you will need to use race gas straight or mixed with reg gas. I see riders all the time buying race gas to put in a stock engine and the increase in power is not worth the money spent.
What you do need to watch out for is what type of gas that you buy at the pump. Try and use only straight gas. Don't buy the gast that has 10% methol or 10% something on the pump. What happens is that 10% is water and the next time that you use your quad it will have a miss and not run good. What has happened is that you have a small water bubble in the bottom of your float bowl and it can not or will not let gas past thought the jets. If you think that you have this problem drain you float bowl and it will stop it for the day. Hope I answered your question and not run on to much.

The octane rating is its resitance to burn. The higher the octane the more it resists burning. What this does is allow you piston to compress further before detination. Higher octane will help to a certain point. But if you're running a stock motor your compression ratio isn't high enough to run High Octane fuel. The 87-93 octane is great for stock motors. Anything more is a waste of money. Anything less you may not get the performance you need. The best thing to do is read your owners manual. It will tell you what octane rating to use.
If you can stay away from fuel that has the addatives to reduce emmissions. These addatives do hurt your engine.

It is best to run the lowest octane fuel that you can.If you have a high compression piston, you need to run a higher octane fuel.

you get out what u put in!!! if you use the 80 octane expect the same in performance. same with 94 octane. race gas burns cooler from what i've heard but it will run alot better and cleaner. long story short, you get what you pay for!!!
<< when in doubt............gas it! >>
