I'm 57, but there are some days when I feel like I'm 67 and far fewer days when I feel like I'm 27 again. For you young fellows out here under 50, enjoy all the abuse while you can, it does catch up with you though later on. A good hard run on the Marienville bike trail pretty much does me in anymore. Some of us have not slowed up over the years, but we find that recovery(survival) is a lot longer these days. I think it's a mindset of wanting to keep doing the same thing, but not smart enough to realize that we really should slow up a bit. Unfortunately I'm not that smart and have not been able to slow much at all. My wife thinks I need serious psychological help . . . she's probably right, butI don't listen that well anymore either.

Keep on keep'in on.

I don't consider myself an "old fart" as your description goes. I think you may fit that description yourself, but many of us that are over 50-60 have more respect for each other than you do for yourself. If the shoe fits . . .

You are a really old man.

I'm 64 and quit riding dirt bikes about 5 years ago for quad riding. It is dangerous; 6 broken ribs, 2 broken collar bones, partially
collapsed lung and minor lung punctures after just one little lapse of attention and the quad followed me over a cliff and landed on me. It took some time to heal, but I'm back riding and enjoying it. Love to ride in Colorado and Utah, but the woods here in Alabama suffices between trips west. I ride for the scenery, not the mud nor for speed. If I had to hike up those peaks, I'd never make it but the quad gets me there without taking all my breath away. The only thing I have to worry about are the "greenies" and their National Forest Service cohorts.

I've been following this thread and have been wondering; Since I haven't had an original thought (yet, but I'm not for sure), but does anyone else aged 64 or older has these thoughts/hobbies;
*disappointed that ZZTop hasn't had a really great album since "Eliminator"
*spends enormous time collecting DRG topographic maps for gps
receivers and riding?
*learning how to create a home LAN and DIY ADSL connection setup?
*wishing hunting season was over so I'se can ride again?
*wondering who the SOB's are that gave out my email address to all those spammers!
*if anybody has GPS "trackfiles" of their Hatfield-McCoy rides,
and what is the name of the USGS quadrangle of that riding area?
*How the H... to stop the rim leak on my back tire?
I've got others, but this'll do. What're yours?

JWC,
some people are old at age of twenty five, some never grow up.I am over fifty as well, yes slow healing is a problem, but we are little wiser,I think.
I like speed/have Grizz 660 and 1200cc jetski/.I go to Colorado with my mountain bike, take a ski lift and go downhilling, I like to ski fast/used to race/. My age slowed me down very little, my injuries do/not much/. I have a 22 years old son, his favorite sport is sleeping. I have a summer house in UP Michigan for years and I go there almost every weekend for riding and having fun. He was there last year first time.Never again.I have 4 Atv's available, he can go there and use anything....well, that's why I think age does not matter.
I believe that a life should be like a good book. Every page is exciting and you enjoy every single one.........
/If you knew my life story, you would say I am takin' this "good book philosophy" tooooo seriously/.

Well, just turned 50 last week so I guess I am in the club. My wife and I both have utility quads and go riding every chance we get. We both love the sport ...as something we can do together. We plan most all our vacation time around somekind of ATV trip.
Hope someday we will have the opportunity to meet some of you on the trails.

Greetings,

I'll be 50 in February, but being born on Leap Year I consider myself a mere teenager. I got a quad three years ago when it dawned on me that (a) I could really justify having one to work on my hobby farm and (b) I was finally old enough that no one could tell me that I couldn't have one.

Then I found out how much fun it was. And I figured it would be best to have someone along especially when I ride in deeper woods. So I just wheeled into town and hauled back a Recon. I had already determined that I couln't keep borrowing a pickup so I had recently acquired a 12X6 utility trailer. Then I got an ATV cart from Northern and then the dreaded flail mower.

I really like doing projects with them. It is so cool to have fun while hauling wood, dragging posts, hauling a few bales for bow shooting, etc. Even the kids think its cool to get something done that way. We also have some nice logging roads that run across the mountains which makes for easy trail riding. The whole valley routinely rides ATVs on the road -- 12 miles of semi paved dirt and stuff -- so its nice to just get around and visit whatever.

But my favorite is to go out really early in my flame helmet and fringe jacket and ride down the road a little too fast (like 40 mph). Man, that's livin' (at my age).

Greetings,

Speaking of an older man ride, I once went out to Taskers Gap, VA for Jim Cowgill's Quads on the Rocks ride. I was amazed at the age profile of the participants. While there were a couple of 30 somethings, none were younger and most were in their 40s and 50s -- maybe even a few 60s. I mentioned it during a break and one guy said "yeah, we're just a bunch of old guys trying to have some fun before they make it illegal." They came from as far away as Alabama and most were well equipped with upscale tow vehicles (e.g. Lincoln Navigator). If Jim posts an annoucement for another ride, you might consider it -- well planned, well run and a good time for the over the hill bunch.

I agree w the age thing I'm 26 I lost my mom this past feb to cancer and I lost my dad in 93 to it also. I bought the Banshee I always wanted but since then Ive backed off alot.Life is precious and in 1 breath it is gone but in the same sense ya cant not live life and sleep life away or hide in a closet and not take chances,it doesnt pay to be sloppy w it either cause every minute counts there is no rehersals in Life. The last 4 years of seeing my mom suffer and having to put my hobbies and love on hold is rough,my career was going nowhwere,2 weeks after my mom died I got mono real bad,my moms friend told me recently the dr told her not only did I come close to having liver failure I came close to dying.I was scared I came home and was crying and praying,I asked for god to let me have some time to live my life alittle to be able to ride and have a family someday.I had so many doubts,w work, paper work from my mom,I kid ya not god works in mysterious ways cause my life went from hell to 1 door opening after another,I had 3 months to rest and think bout life. Not to be a negative thing but since then I have gotten a great job my health back which is number 1 to me now,I have it good ,some 1 at my new job told me The lord is smiling down on me.As a christian I truly believe that and in the power of positive prayer,Some people have seen so much in such a short lifetime, plus no matter how bad ya have it some 1 always has it worse.God gives and he takes away he also doesnt give ya more then ya can handle.Colt I think that is sad your 22 year old is sleeping away his life instead of living it,not to judge but ya just dont know when its gonna all go the wayside,I didnt think 2 weeks after my mom died Id get so sick at 26 hell i thought i was kinda invincible at 26,at least I have respect and understanding what she went thru partially and health in general. Its like the saying goes ya dont know how good ya have it or much some 1 means to ya until there gone.Well Happy roosting and God bless.

I guess I would have to be a member of this gang too. Although I am a "young" 46 I have been involved in ATVing since I was 19. I bought my first new 3 wheeler in 1975. A nice new shiny Honda 90 ATC. I always rode motorcycles, and before that mini-bikes. The first time I ever rode an ATC I was hooked instantly. I went out the very next day and bought one. Most of my trailbike friends said I was crazy and that the 3 wheeler was "stupid". Needless to say I spent a lot of time riding their motorcycles while they TRIED OUT my machine. And guess what! All of them ended up owning one of their own after realizing how fun they were. Now 26 years (and conservatively) 40 to 50,000 miles later some of us still ride together. We have evolved thru the whole range of models from sport to 4wd utility. I used to say when the 4 wheelers first came out that they were for sissys and I would NEVER own one. Well as my age changed so did my ideas. Now I wouldnt have anything but 4wd. I have slowed down my speeds over the years but not my endurance. We still ride 10 to 12 hour days sometimes. I am still the "oldest kid" on the block and I am sure my neighbors wonder about me sometimes. I pride myself on being able to do a wheelie on just about anything with a motor. (Including my riding lawnmower)
I do know that I am going to get older no matter what, but I am going to hold out to the bitter end on that growing up part.

Farty three here; the rig is almost as old - it's an 84 TRX200 in poor shape, but hey - I'm no better than it is! As long as the wheels stay on, I'm fine. Now if I just squeze in some time to ride it before the gas goes stale....

Great job everyone! I thought I was the only "OLD GUY" that read these Forums.
47 years of experience here. I tell my wife I didn't have any gray hair when I meet her, She says I didn't have any fun til I meet her!

I'll be 67 in a few months and have all the aches and pains of getting older; however, the pains go away as soon as I mount my four-wheeler. I have been to the Hatfield-McCoy trails. Will be going back in December and again in January. I live in Florida and am retired. I'd like to think I could qualify for the "old fools and farts" club.

Just wondering how many of us "old" guys are on this forum. I'm 52, and enjoy riding atv's, but I don't care which is fastest,(thirty years ago, I probably would have!) and I get tired of all the "bashing". I understand the "kids" on here like the speed and racing, but some of us KNOW we're not invincable! We can get hurt, and at this age, it takes longer to recover! I just enjoy the ride and would like to see a forum where we can share a common interest, no matter who built our machines. No offence to the young guys, just trying to "hook up" with the old men! Hey fellas, I am 32. I am saving up money for my first quad, hopefully by early next year I can purchase one. I am working and saving up so I can go and lay all the cash down and have it all paid off immediately. Possibly by February or March I will be smiling hopefully. Just remember,- "Once you are over the hill, you pick up Speed"! I have a insulated sleeve that slides over my bottle of beer that keeps it cold that says this!Don't ask me what quad I am buying yet, because their is such a great selection out there, that I have to do some well thought out research, etc. Later.

I'm 47, and some days I feel my age, others I feel like I've just arrived. Broken a few, torn a few, repaired most, and most of the scars don't show wearing riding gear. My sons race (motorcycles), but I don't anymore. Our best friend is 60, and he still races once or twice a year (also motorcycles). Quads are easier to ride than bikes, it takes less concentration, and mistakes are not as costly, so that's what I've stayed with for the last few years. I've decided that I'll ride until my body quits, or the government bans my toys.

Posted by: RaptorRRC

49.5 here. Just got my first sport 4wheeler Nov 2000 and my second in feb 2001, both are Raptors. I have always tried to have some kind of toys for fun, dirt bikes, Jet boats, Odyseys and now 4wheelers. I have a 350 honda 4X4 that is left over from a small farm that my son used as his transportation when he was 12 (19now) and then I bought him a 1997 300ex. Last year I wanted to go riding with him and his friends at the dunes and he said it would be ok but I would not be able to keep up with them so I could stay back and ride with the old people. The next day I went and bought my first Raptor, a set of sand tires and roosted him all weekend at the dunes. I was at first going to let him have the Raptor and sell his 300 after the dune trip but I had so much fun I decided to keep it. He got a Raptor a week after we got back and I bought another Raptor 3 months later. I do the inviting now for dune and other riding trips. We now ride every week and have built a mx track at a friends property with trails and a drag area. We get into the whose bike is fastest everytime we ride and have a blast. I also like a good putt on a nice 4X4, fast or slow it is all good. We make Dune trip about every 6 weeks with a growing group of friends. I do not ride as fast as some but not as slow as most. LOL. The faster ones are not that far ahead either and a lot of the time they would think they were far enough ahead to pull over and rest and before they got their helments of I was up with them asking why they were resting again. Raptorrider2001 is always right with me. We do at times wonder how they ride so fast in some places or are we just riding smarter, LOL. Love the rush of power and speed. There is another friend that rides (Raptor) with us that is 66 and he seems like he was born on the dunes. Did somebody say this was only a young persons sport? Most of us had parents that could not or would not buy this kind of stuff when I was young so I have to do it all that I can do now.

Posted by: Raptorrider2001

I'm 62 and love my Raptor and speed. It would be very hard to go back to something tamer.
As far as being "old", I'd like to remind the younger ones of a little quote I saw a long time ago on a gravestone in Co. "Where you are now I once was, where I am now you will soon to be"

Posted by: Raptorrider2001

RaptorRRC!!! Good Post! Thanks again for letting me join in the fun with your group. Like you said, we are not slower, just wiser. The "Trailer Queen" proved that. Besides, you are still a youngster. Me, I'm running out of time. I'm hoping to break that time barrier on my Raptor that will take me back in time. Seems to be working mentally but not completely physically, yet. Still not a pretty site when I look in the mirror....

Hi Trane. We have several places we like to ride. The closest to you is probably at the south end of Lake Lavon. We have a Rpatorriders club on Yahoo and one of our members lives in Garland and he has a web site with places to ride in the North Texas area. Check out his page at http://www.goplayinthedirt.com/
Let me know what you come up with. also see RaptorRRC's post at the top of the thread and get in touch with him. His friend 14mins. has built a riding place over newar Ft. Worth and they let anyone hang out over their that likes to ride. Let me know what you think. Several in the club will be going to west texas in the next month or so to ride in the sand dunes. We went several times last spring and summer. Later

Hi, I am 54 and have been enjoying quading for about three years. Last summer I let the insurance expire on my motorcycle. It is a 5oocc T.T. Yamaha and I do miss it a bit. My wife likes to come along on the quad so I get out more often now which makes up for the loss of the Yamaha. For two up riding our 454 Arctic Cat works well and is a lot easier on the old bod.

I am only 31. We took my In-Laws on a sand dune trip a couple years ago. The following picture is of my father in law. He was about 62 when we took that. We are planning on going to Little Sahara Utah, in the spring. Both my wife's parents love the dunes, they ride double up on the Arctic Cat 454, except when he is jumping it!

Those 'chutes look like a lot of fun. But, they also look a little scary! A local came in for a landing on our back field. The carriage was below the powerline, the chute was above it... He didn't get hurt. I only heard it and saw the aftermath. By the time I got over to him, he was out and on his feet again. The power company had to cut the 'chute to get it detangled from the powerlines. He busted up the carriage a bit too. Looked kind of expensive! And they give me bull for riding ATV's!!!!!!!

I'm 38 and had been looking for a hobby my whole life when a friend and I discovered powered parachutes and bought one together. Really figured that was as much fun possible until I started riding quads more. Sold the 'chute and can't ever see enjoying a pastime anymore than this.

PhilMoore,

Don't want to boor people going off topic but we had the 'distinction'(if that's what you'd call it) of being the first people in the country to make an insurance claim on a ppc. Insurance companies wouldn't touch them for a long time and we ended up replacing everything but the motor and chute(patched some holes). My buddy took it in nose first, 360'ed forward and came to rest with the wheel snapped off and the frame torn at the weld among other things. Thank God he was O.K.(wind judgement error)but learning to fly those chutes with him was definitely one of the best times I've ever had. These aircraft really are the easiest and safest things going when flown under the right conditions; problem being those conditions(wind speed)can be few and far between if you work for a living.

Well, I'm 35 and my wife and I (we both ride) are due for our first child in 2 weeks. This got me thinking; when he's 15 I'll be 50. That being the case, I better REALLY work on getting myself in shape so I can keep up with him. At those ages, he will be getting faster and I'll be getting slower.

Hi, 34 been reading this post for a while and wasn't going to reply. Cause I'm hoping that I'm only half way up the HILL. Rode bikes for 25 or so years and just got my 4x4 this year, Love it makes working on the ranch a little easier.

A meager 38 here, soon to change that in January. But if you asked my wife I'm sure she'd say I was 12! I have only broken my patella and collar bone to date, So for that I'm grateful. Being young and dumb is not a right, just an act of foolishness. But I'm not slowing down till I can't pick myself back up. See ya around on the trails and track!

Hi! May I join the gang? I,m 52 and did not realize how old I was till I figured up how long I have been riding-36 years. I must be getting better as I have not broken any bones lately but I don,t go as fast as I used to or take the chances.Have been riding 4-wheeler for 12 years. Tried street riding for 9 years-decided it was too dangerous-sold it and bought a new Rancher4x4.
I do get tired of reading forums like How fast does your atv go?
How can I make mine go faster? Who makes the fastest? Although I guess I was speed crazy too at that age..................Mike

I'm a 30 yr. old in a 59 yr. old body. Got my first quad a year ago and I don't look back (somebody might be gaining...). I gave up motorcycles 'cause I seemed to be having more close calls on the road, and I really wasn't riding enough to stay sharp. I really hate it when a cager turns in front of you;especially when they look right at you while doing it.

I love my 'Cat, and use it on a nearly daily basis around home and on trail rides.

Posted by: joyrider

I'm 49. We just got our quads this summer. I rode and raced dirt bikes for years when I was younger and the quads sure filled a void. I still like to hit the gas, but not like I used to.

Posted by: deebee

Ok Texans move over! I'm 51 and live to ride, my wife also in her fifties
loves to go along as well. We are into mountain trail riding and don't see
a lot of speed on our trips. We have developed quite a following over the years and now when we go we take along 20 or more bikes. Our reputation for riding and partying has spread to the point that everybodys trucks and trailers are full of quads when we meet to take off. We will do about a hundred miles and then return to bottom of the mountain for supper and brewskis, a good time is always had.
The young bucks that go with their Banchees and Raptors and 400exs talk a lot about rooster tailing me but seems I'm always the first one up and down. Its a great hobby, relaxing and safe because we always stay on the trails. One of our trips is usually good for a roll of film as well.
Have fun and enjoy, at OUR age we earned it....

(Much against the wishes of their mother) Just gave up the two wheeler this summer, seems I don't recover from wipe outs as quickly. Just can't imagine growing up and giving up the fun - guess I won't.

Hey, I'll be 40 in a couple of months. The wife and I just bought our first two ATV's. WE know several other families our age who like to camp and ride. Like you, I'm not winning any races but I have a great time whenever we go out. Welcome to the club.

Posted by: eeyou

Well gentlemen, I am only 69 years old and I do ride an ATV. My younger brother ( only 65 years old) and I use our ATV&39;s to fish, hunt and trap. We also use them to haul wood for the camp stove etc. We spend about six months of the year in the forest enjoying nature and it&39;s abundance. I am just back from bow hunting season with a ten point buck on the rear rack of the ATV. I will be leaving on October 19 for trapping season. I will be back home either for Christmas or when the need to be near my wife calls very loudly. We are not speed demons, we are only two old coots having safe fun after retiring a few years ago. We have all the time in the world to admire nature in all respects during the different seasons. It is especially beautiful now with the maples turning red.

Enjoy yourselves safely.

Im 34, with a body feeling like i'm 50. Broke a few, well, 10 anyway, and have torn out a knee, as well as a back, and still i keep on tickin. They say your as young as you feel. Well, I feel 50 till i get on my 2002 grizzly, just bought it after selling my stage 2 warrior. just couldn't take the abuse from the warrior. guess that means i am officially in the club. I do feel 15 on the grizzly though. Still able to go 200 miles in a day, all out for that matter. We need to organize a broken down or older man ride once. What we might lack in all out speed, we make up for in smarts and endurance, just ask the ladys, haha. It is soooo good to see when i am 60, i will still love it, so you slightly elderly men give me alot of hope, and just keep on keeping on!!!

hey expeditioneer, i hear ya buddy, lol. What ever happened to the good ol' 8 track, lol. i am still trying to figure out when a 250 got SMALL? learning to ride without the ol' undies, do to the hole riding up thing, heehee. I got a 660, and everyone keeps asking me when i am going to add a muffler and jet it??? why??? it can kill me just fine the way it is!My bone breakage limit was 10, and i reached it last year, so i have got to slow down, lol.
i am stil trying to figure out how to use this damn contraption so i havent figured out how to find anything on it.
zz top is way into retirement, so eliminator is all that will remain.
a gps is my new bible, couse i DONT want to get lost in the wild when it gets dark, lmao!
And finally, one of mine own!!! Why does everyone try to find easy fixes for there machines? It just seems so much easier to buy new things that will work just fine, aint it? Then again, a 72 chevy used to get me around just fine, and now i'm looking at the 2001 and wondering if i should of got leather, lmao!

Just turned 51. Did airplanes (got to expensive), boats (wouldn't pull my camper and a boat), dirt bikes (don't heal fast enough anymore), still have my street bike (gold wing, love it) and hope to buy a atv in a few month's. Don't ever grow old. Don't let the bastards wear you down.

Mark here,

Turned 52 this year. My 16 year-old daughter is an MXer, so I decided to try quadding so I could race at her events (20 years of sports car racing wasn't enough). Dirt and air are not my elements, so it's been very hard to get acclimated, still, I'm looking forward to next season on a new Z400 Suzuki. But, the most fun I've had was a day trip riding on jeep trails in the Cascade mountains, here in Washington.

Whenever I start wondering if I should be doing this, I just remind myself that Mario Andretti was 54 when he retired from CART. Besides, is there such a thing as enough throttle steer?

I just brought my first Quad. A Praire 650. This is my first experience riding any type of cycle of this type. I am 55 and needed a new interest other than coming home from work and crashing! This is it. I love it. I wish I had discovered it earlier. For now, I will ride until the sun sets on me! Thanx guys for a great threat. Keep it up. Live at 55!

'm 46 (I think).I just traded my Shadow tourer for a Rancher 4x4.No
regrets so far. Just to many close calls besides the wife can't ride
anymore.I can't handle road rash like I used to. Been riding since I was 10-12 years old. I love it. The Rancher is the first 4-wheeler I've ever owned. Does that make me an old fart? I hope so. Better to be an old live fart than a young dead one!!!!!!

I'm 45 and still enjoy riding as much as I did when I was 25. Only difference is I ride a lot slower and a lot more cautious. I have a Kawasaki 650 Prarie and enjoy every minute I'm on it. It does have enough power to get me hurt if I won't to get crazy.
