I had my Banshee stolen two years ago while it was less than 30 feet from me. For this reason, I put an alarm on each of my three ATV's. The unit I bought is sold at K-Mart, made by Bulldog and is nothing more than a small squarish box (about the size of two cigarette packs) that has the electronics, speaker, etc. all built inside. There isn't even a cone sticking out for the siren, but holes in the box acting as a speaker grill (the siren is completely built inside). There are models out there that are similar in price, application, etc., but they have a large cone speaker that sticks out of the box. It is a very, very basic setup. I mounted it directly under my Banshee seat, underneath the plastic opposite of where the tool kit space is. Don't use two-way tape, glue, etc., when mounting it to the plastic. Use only wire (zip) ties pulled very tight. The rubber from the other items provides a "cushion" between the ATV and the alarm, thereby, decreasing its motion detecting capabilities. I mounted it here for three reasons: 1) It is located directly under the plastic, under seat, thereby is centered on the bike. This provides the best motion detecting position you can get. 2) It is completely concealed from plainview, even if you remove the seat. 3) The small tool compartment is a perfect place for the cell phone battery. I simply ran the wires from the cell phone battery, through the plastic, with a male/female connector so I can remove the battey and charge it. If a person knew where it was, they could take the seat off and cut the wires. But by then, the alarm would have sounded for at least a few seconds and hopefully scared them off (nobody expects an alarm on an ATV). What is really neat about this unit is that the alarm is turned on and off with a remote control key fob just like a car. You should see the looks I get from people when I step off my Banshee, point the key fob at it, push the button to activate the alarm (the alsrm beeps) and walk away. Same thing when I return to it and turn it off with the key fob. The bottom line is simple, most thieves are probably gonna try sitting on it, moving it, walking away with it, picking it up, etc., before they look for alarm wires to cut. With this in mind, my alarm setup should be beneficial in situations where you leave your ATV alone for short periods of time (go into store, in back of truck, etc.). Anything above a 6 volt cell phone battery will operate the siren at full volume. I recommend a lithium cell phone battery with at least 1200 mh. The mh (milliamps) is an indicator of the length of time the battery will last. I can get about 48 hours of non-stop monitoring with this battery (this time is reduced if the siren is activated). Another great option for an inexpensive battery source is to get one that powers all of these inexpensive remote controlled, electric cars our kids use. These batteries are normally 9.6 volts and 1440 mh. You can get them, with a charger for about $25.00 at Toys R' Us, Radio Shack, K-Mart, Target, Wal-Mart, etc. The alarm works exceptionally well! In fact, I have one on my son's Blaster and my wife's Sport 400 (didn't need a cell phone battery for this). Let me know if you have questions!

The alarm has two wires and is made to hook up to the positive and negative sides of a car battery. I just bought a connector at Radio Shack and hooked them to a small 6v lithium cellular phone battery. It works perfect. You can also use a 9.6v radio controlled car battery. The enclosed trailer is the only way to go. Get a fold down ramp door, put an alarm on it and forget about it. I am very happy with my enclosed trailer.

I live on top of a hill with a cut-back drive. No one knew we were up here until putting in a new road and using my ATV. Middle of the night a scumbag came and took the ATV. Thank God my homeowners (Nationwide) covered the loss minus deductible. When I replace it, it will be chained, guarded with a new German Shepard, and alarmed. One new piece of advice: For anyone with a long drive, a driveway alarm is a must. If I had one, I would have been waiting for them. Deer set them off once in awhile but I can take some false alarms. I know when the kids are walking up the road, when my wife comes home, or we have visitors. I did a lot of research and found the Optex Wireless 1000 the best. I ordered it over the net from the Security Store, 888-501-7870, www.norcoalarms.com I think it was $125. Thanks for starting this post...good info. I have been looking for a chain or stranded wire that resists bolt cutters. Will check out options here.

If your quad has disk brakes then you can put a lock through the holes in the rotor. This way the quad will only move until the locks hit the calipers. If they want your quad then they will have to carry it or drag it away. When I am out camping I will use a chain and tie it to a big tree along with the pad locks on the rotors.

I have a length of high tinsel chain I bought from Northern Tool. It would take you all day with a hacksaw and the rest of your life with a bolt cutter to get through. I also bought 2 Master Locks made out of the same kind of steel. I usually chain the machine to my truck frame. I also have full coverage on the 4-wheeler. Locks only keep honest people out but at least with that setup the crooks will have to work for it. 30 feeet of chain and the 2 locks ran about $50 but it is worth it in the long run.

Before I finished my garage, I kept mine covered and chained to the house. One day at Home Depot, I came across battery powered motion detectors with a VERY loud built-in alarm. ($25) I purchased one and kept it on my quad under the cover. I just put it in an inconspicuous spot on the quad. A bad guy is gonna take the cover off and when he does, he'll have about eight seconds in which to complete his mission. If he's that good, he can have the quad! Anyway, just a little extra peace of mind. Ours are insured with State Farm. $205 a year for both.

INSURANCE is the absolute BEST theft protection one can get. As the saying goes, locks, chains, dogs, etc just keep an honest man honest. If someone really wants your quad, they'll get it. So protect yourself and have peace of mind by having insurance.

We use kryptonite locks to lock them all together in the pole barn. Then I pull my truck in and block them all off. Also, they are insured, through Progressive. However, it only covers replacement value of a 99 400EX and $1000 in mods. Which would probably cover less than half of what I got in it. So I really hope that it never turns up missing. BIG OWNER and BIG GLOCK. i have a 3/4" chain off of an m60 tank but it weighs 150lbs. honestly, if someone really wants your atv all they need is a little time and a cutting torch. the best thing to do is to keep it out of sight and buy plenty of insurance (you may use booby traps if you're crazy or a redneck). texascat

MUDDY4LIFE, THEY can get to your quads if they wanted to i'm sure. We had a 96 Timberwolf in our shed with the Nissan in front of the doors, blocking them. The guy who stole it worked at the Nissan dealership and had a "master key" to OUR truck! He just unlocked the doors, moved it forward, picked the lock on the shed, pulled the T-Wolf out, locked the shed back up,then pulled the truck back where it was and locked it back up. Next time there will be a foundation with a chain through it.

well, i have at my disposal the services of 3 potentially pernicious individuals of the canine persuasion. they are quite reliable and take pride in their work. if for some reason they fail at their objective, i will utilize certain devices that are accurate to various distances, as an impediment to any threat upon my person, wife and family or property.......

my grzz is just settin in the yard and i live in town!!! however, the trailer i haul it on is locked to the quad with the wheels of the quad settin in my house.if someone steals it,they're goin to work for it

girlatvr If you can't keep em out of sight, insure them and chain them to something with a high strength chain. Mine is chained to a 80 pound block of cement, buried in the ground. I just drive over the top of it and run the chain thru the frame and lock it with an armory lock. You should vynle coat the chain to prevent damage to the frame.

TEK 9 WITH BANNANA CLIP.. JUST KIDDING. iNSURANCE IS THE WAY TO GO . NORMALLY A NEW QUAD IS AROUND 400.00 A YEAR. THATS ONLY 33.00XX MTH. WELL WORTH IT.

Posted by: MWHC

When I bought my ATV I also got full coverage. If it gets ripped off, falls of the trailor or even if I hit a deer, I get a new one. I thought you had to have insurance?

Posted by: MUDDY4LIFE

They cant get to either of my quads.I leave mine inside my polebarn. It has NO windows at all in it.It has a 36 inch walk thru entrance door, and a large 18ft door that opens up for the car/truck to enter. My ATVs are blocked inside the polebarn at night by my PU truck,so you would have to move my truck first to be able to even think about getting to the quads. The best protection I have for my quads is insurance. It cost me 108 dollars for the 00 Xplorer per yr,and 80 dollars for the 98 Recon. Bill

Girlatvr2, I have my insurance from Farmers also, $125/yr on 2000 500 sp, I had covered brother in laws also who had is yanked through a 3 foot space between his house and boat, it was a 335 sp, they paid off his loan, with couple hundred extra to mourn on. They also paid to fix damage to mine after letting some goof ball take it for a ride and coming back with $2700 in damage. so keep the insurance it sure helps. 4wheelitis -Troy
