Communicators on the helmet are fine but that's where they usually stay...on the helmet. Hand-helds seem more versatile for other activities.

Glad your having luck with the chatterboxs,WE had them on snowmobiles and they didn't work past 1/2 mile in the woods.And the cold kills the battery (returned)
As for motorola talkabouts they were even worse in the woods 1/2 mile at best.(returned)And will not work car to car!All other brands around same size,are talkabout rebadges.Check watt output...sp50's are 5watt
Then we found the ticket!! Motorola sp50's with v/activated head set.5 mile range about three miles in the woods.They are $500 each new,But we found a place to get them used at half price ,somtimes even less$$$$$150.Due to gag order e-mail for info.
These are the same ones the police use we have pushed them to 10 miles somtimes.
You want the UHF ones (not VHF)
They may cost a little more,but they are well worth it,And they will last forever.I lost one off the quad doing 50mph, Not a problem!!!

donavan, we just recently ran into some riders in the forest that had radio shack products...little walkie talkie with an earpiece that clips inside your helmet. Everyone in the group had one and they all liked them. check em out.

I just seen a new two way radio from GE it looks just like those nice $79.00 jobs from the other makers but it only costs $36.00 at I think I saw it at Target. The range is the same around 2 miles.

Does anyone use a two-way helmet-mounted radio when riding with a partner or group? My wife and I are shopping for a set & was curious. I saw the review for the Motorola Talkabout (it looks pretty good but it's xpensive) but was looking for other options. I noticed Maxon has a few different radios, but the range is pretty dismal.
Just curious what everyone uses.

I don't know if this is what your looking for but it works for me.
I have a set of inexpenive Family radios by audiovox. I got the pair for seventy dollers at target. Then I bought a mic/earbud set at radio shack.. the only problem with this set up is it lacks voice activiation. But at a 1/2 mile to a mile it works.

My wife and I use the new Chatterbox (family radio channel model) helmet mounted radios. Although they are relatively expensive (msrp $199) they work extremely well. Range is approx. 2 miles in the woods. They are voice activated so require nothing to be mounted to the 4 wheeler and have no wires to tangle with. Typical battery life is 2 days of riding before recharging. They are very easy to install and quickly disconnect if you want to ride without the radio.
