Adam I also have the new Kolpin. This gun boot works out great! Inside the boot there is soft cotton (I guess) which makes me feel very confident that my rifle or shotgun is in very good care.
I did have one problem though, this past hunting season I mounted the boot holder wrong, I only use 2 u-bolts instead of the tree for my ES. It worked out great the first half of hunting season. Until one day when I was going over a caved in drive way that had been cemented, It shook the boot so hard (with my rifle in it) it cracked on side of the boot holder (I did have one of my heaviest rifles with me so that helped out the problem). I had the gun boot on the right of my ES, so when I got back to my house that night I simply moved it to my left side (opposite of the crack) and installed all tree u-bolts. Well my problem was fixed, and the last half of the season worked out great.

I have seen a lot of deer while riding - but all were either very young or moving fast! I used to have a stand that was about 25 yards through a stand of trees that faced away from the main road going to our camp along a pipeline and always had deer grazing for me to watch. (Man I hated leaving that camp and giving up that stand!)The pipeline was not visable from the road. Anyway, during the 5 years I was there I noticed that when cars or trucks went by, the deer would continue grazing without even glancing up, but when an ATV came down the road they were off and running almost immediately! Nothing scientific, and there are exceptions to everything - but here in this part of the country, not too many deer stand and watch you ride an ATV!

Man, did you forget you own a Scrambler?.. i've decided that i'm gonna leave the 22-250, and the .243 at the house this year..
I figure with the new tires on the Scrambler, I'm just gonna mount a couple of arrows on the front and go out "stalkin". See, I figure this is the lazy mans way, cause when I stick'em, they'll already be loaded on the quad for me... PRETTY SLICK THINKIN' HUH!!! BUT of course, if I ONLY had a Honda 400EX.. it would handle MUCH better and accelerate back to camp(deer in tow) SO MUCH BETTER!..
I'm gonna have to check out the Koplin Boot. I need a new one for the Yamaha since its decided its gonna stay together this time.

Well, depends on what time of year it is... I've had doe stand there and never give me a second look while sitting on my (running) 4-wheeler.
I think they knew that I didnt have a gun or a big rock to throw at them. That and one of them edumacated deers has done put a calendar up in the woods somewhere. They know when the first day of season is...
What we've noticed around here is that when you first start running a trail on a 4 wheeler, you stay with that machine throughout the season, atleast NOT switching from a 4-stroke to a two stroke.. or to a oil burnin 4 stroke... Around here, it seems that once they get used to the particular scents of one or two machines and people coming thru, it becomes routine and they dont run off so quickly...
Well, atleast till that first shot on opening morning... lolol...

A few weeks ago a thread on gun boots was running. I have some more comments.
We tried all kinds of different ways to carry guns on our 3-wheelers, 4-wheelers, and even a friends old camo dual sport dirt bike.
We tried everything from just setting the gun in the small holders that mount on the hande-bars (not good, unstable and easy to damage gun, scopes also go out of adjustment), to the kind that hare really fancy will all sort of mounts and swivels and belles and whistles.
Our conclusions? Our favorite, and least favorite are the Kolpin and Kolpin. The origonal Kolpin was ok, but wasn't easy or fast for removing the gun or the boot itself. The new style Kolpin is really hard to beat.
The mount is really nice, and you can make it work with just about anything. The finsih is good, it looks professional and not like somthing a little kid with a welding machine slapped together. Once the main mount piece is in, the boot itself slides in and out really easy. It has pins at the bottom that make sure the boot doesn't come out, if you don't want it too. Then the end of the boot comes off by removing a pin too, so you can take out your gun.
Only complaint? It would be nice if the pins hard little chains that help them to the boot so they won't get lost. We do this to all of ours, and if you haven't done it I reccamend it.
I heard this is the same boot Polaris offers an accessory from them too. I don't know if that is true.
Summary? The new Kolpin, in my opinion, is the best out right now. If you are looking for somthing new to carry your gun, go check this one out.

Hehehe, great idea Robert. We mounted this one on the Sportsman. I am either going put the gun boot from out Suzuki on mine, or mount that boot on the Sportsman too so I can be free. :-) I thought about just using our Suzuki when we go hunt, it is camo, but then I can't have the only bright red, rackless, gun-bootless ATV in the camp.

Have used the Kolpin Gun Boot for several years now and highly recommend it. It has held up well and will protect your rifle or shotgun from the weather, mud and being battered by trees and tree limbs. I like it. It works well for me.

I hunt with an AR-15 with a 4X12X40 scope and I can not find a gun boot that will fit it anywhere the front sight post always gets in the way let alone trying to get it in the boot with a 30 round mag!Those deer got nowhere to run when I get them in my sights! I just put mine on the front rack and bungie it down.

I too have witnessed the same. Granted, I do not hunt my property and know one else does, but all the deer just stand and look! "Hey, fred, what's that big thing??" "I don't know george, let's just stand here and look at it and see if he'll chase us?".
of course I do! I chase deer all the time. At least twcie a week. They use all my trails to get around on. Easy walking I guess? You would think they would get scared of me but they don't. I have noticed that they are very curious when I am on the four wheeler. I chase them off but they always circle back to another place and look at me! Funny, I think. Very curious creatures. More curious than I have ever seen in deer. I have seen them even follow me to see what I am doing. If I see them through the trees. I pull up out of site and just sit. Yep, here they come! They move to look through the trees at me. They even stand there when I crank up. They stay there till they see that I am after them. It's a good 30 minute ordeal of deer chasing. Mostly is the younger deer, doe's in particular. You ever see that buck and he is high tailing!! Ain't like a women to be noisy is it? HEHEEHEE!!!
People say all the time "You oughta put some lead in em!" Let me hunt and I will. "No thanks!" I enjoy playing with them to much. I enjoy watching them come up in back yard and eat scraps!" Deer are about as common as dogs where I live. Me and the neighbors both enjoy watching. There ain't nothing wrong with eat'n a little deer though! Also, there ain't no need in hunting if you don't need the meat in the frig either!!
If I could just figure out what to do with it once I catch it? I guess I could bulldog and tie it like they do in the rodeo but, I don't think I'll be catching one anytime soon!!

Has anyone noticed that deer are not scared of you if you are sitting on your quad?
I have never personally tried this. but a friend of mine has told me several times about riding, seeing deer and them not running off, or be sitting on his 3-wlr, drinking coffee, and deer come up and just stare and stare, and even when he starts up and moves off, they don't run.
Has anyone else had this happen?

As for deer not being fearful of people on ATV's, I have found the same is true while riding in a automobile. Deer run when they recognize immediate danger. They will often stand motionless until they have determined there is a need to flee. This especially true when hunting in cover. If a deer sees you but feels safe and hidden, it will often remain there until you are almost on top of them.
As for the ATV and automobile, they probably see you and the ATV as one and as an object that is not common to their visual vocabulary. Now stop and set off or out of the vehicle and they will run like hell.
Although I cannot agree with the ethics behind it, some people like to hunt from ATV's for this very reason.
