The price of the Motorola FRS units has come down and I've seen them for around $70 (costco, sams club). Motorola makes different carrying packs too. I like the velcro arm pack and use the remote earpiece and clip the mic onto my collar. This setup is relatively cheap and works well quad or bike riding. BTW, some of the cheaper non-motorola units I've communicated with don't have the sound quality of the motorola. New 4-5 mile range units are emerging, but they're expensive; for now.

There was a post on this site a couple of weeks ago where someone had asked about the Motorola TalkAbouts. I gave my advice and even gave instructions on how to wire up your helmet. If you are interested do some searching to read the post.

Yeah we have been very happy with our Motorola units. They have taken a ton of abuse and water!

Just purchased a set of Collet 49's last month. They work very well. Very clear sound, no reception problems, and really nice to be able to talk to my wife while we ride (instead of stopping at every fork in the trail, I holler out right or left). Only problem so far has been due to my wife's softer voice doesn't open the mike up as well as mine. Solved that by her blowing on the mike (to open it) and then talking. I purchased the 49's primarily for price, the $600 plus 900 series look great, but I want a gps this year to. The Collet's are well manufactured, ours have gotten wet with no problems, and they make your ride a whole lot more fun.
