hot_shoe_cv,
I have an Emap and it shuts down or the display will freeze while riding and it drives me nuts.
The only thing to get it started again is to pull the batteries.
What is the solution to resolve this?
Thanks!

I have had the GPS12 for about 1 1/2 years & it is an excellent unit. I basically use it for tracking the miles I've ridden from start & current speed, elev., and the route back to my camp or truck. It has a ton of other bells & whistles such as ability to download to a computer for mapping, etc., which I don't use as I ride mainly in the Prescott & Coconino Nat. Forests in areas I'm familiar with. I have two different mounts for my quads allowing me to operate it & read it while riding. I got mine at Popular Outfitters in Prescott.

like2wheel,
According to the manual it meets emersion tests of 30 min. @1meter.
By the way, for the benefit of those who have had difficulty with their units shutting down in their mounts while riding hard, I have the solution to the problem.

jdenison,
If it occurs with the unit in a mount of any kind, It's because with any hard jolt the batteries lose contact with each other, thereby shutting the unit down.
The solution is to remove the batteries, place each pair in the position they would be in when installed, and wrap a short piece of Scotch tape around them where they meet each other. This will keep each pair in contact with each other and the springs will keep the pairs in contact.
I have ridden my Warrior at full throttle over some pretty rough terrain Including whoops, drop-offs, etc, with never a failure. Prior to this fix, I had tried placing springs between each pair of batts. with no success.

Is the GPS12 waterproof also? I can't decide between the two either.

Any regrets that it only stores 1 route or that it looses it's memory when the batteries are changed? Never owned one,so I'm not sure what features are really important.
thanx

I have and run the gps III on my quad. yes you can down load the local map into it with not a single prob yet. I dont have anything bad to say about it what so ever. As far as ease of use its much like using a computer, the more you use it the better you will understand it. Its a very excelent unit, with many features built in. In my opinion it was worth every cent i paid for it

I have the Magellan unit also, No problems with the unit it works very good. I do lose satellite coverage usually once or twice in a ride but I am riding in the mountains with tree cover. Garmin has more accessories for the GPS than does Magellan.
Yes they are worht their weight in gold!

I also have an etrex which I have not had any trouble with. I guess it is possible that it is battery contact but it might be a software problem. Check their websight. You can dl a software upgrade from them but you must have the serial port connector to the etrex. Mine has been on backorder. If you send it back in they can upgrade it for free.
Check and see what version yours is.
Hope that helps

I wanted the cheapest waterproof one I could by. I also one that was small. I went to a Marine store to see what they recommended and it was etrex. i have enjoyed mine so far. You can also connect it to the computer or with a lap top with a map program. It will also take external power source.
Good Luck

How do you like that 3-D topo map from Delorme's? How fine of detail do you get, and does it pick up all streams, creeks, trails and roads? I know of a couple trails that I can't find on most maps out there, that are actual marked off-roading trails, or hiking trails. What can you download into the unit, if it won't let you download the 1:24,000 scale maps?
Does anybody have any experience with the Garmin III plus unit? It looks like it's a fully loaded model, but how does the ease of operation compare to the rest? I'd like to be able to download maps of my hunting area, as well as our property into the unit and work with it from there. Is that possible?
Thanks for the help, I don't know much about the possibilities of these things, though they look like they could be very beneficial. A lot of the farmers out here are beginning to use them now with mapping capabilities for Precision Ag. farming.

I too have been looking at these models. The 12 has a couple of more features and I think a little larger display ?Anyway I think I may go with the 12.The other has the buttons on the side instead of the front. I want to mount it on the quad,so I need quick access to the buttons.

Another vote for the Magellan 315. I debated if to get a mapping GPS, but until a 1:24000 map can be loaded into the unit . . . will save my money. The 315, along with Delorme's 3D Topoquad maps printed before a trip, seem to be an ideal way to go. Also, if the GPS "takes a dump" (memory-wise speaking), it's easy to re-establish your location with detailed Lat/Long marked maps along. Now, if you folks out there know of a recent advancement in moving map GPS units at the 7.5 minute level, please let me know!

The ColorTrak has battery backup. It shouldn't lose your landmarks.

I had the same problem last year when trying out my new Magellan ColorTrac. I had the hills of Glamis programmed in and headed out with it mounted on my bars. The part that really sucks is when the batteries lost contact it lost the programming.
Tape your batteries and keep a hard copy of your coordinates in your pocket.
Whichever model you get make sure it&39;s waterproof. If it&39;s waterproof it will be dust, dirt, sand and mud proof. And after you get it all dirty just dip it in some clean water.

Well, for the record, I have the Magellan 315. I have not had any of the problems that everyone is talking about. It has batteries in it, but I have the power cord for it, which is always plugged in.
I have it mounted flat on top of the gas tank and it has never lost its' tracking. Easy to use and view and I don't have to worry about branches or roll-overs smashing it.
Just my nickles worth.... (inflation!)

Have you tried updating the software?? Check out this link and update. If you have already updated the software then I'm not sure what could be causing your problem. Maybe too much vibration?? Anyway here's the link:
