Care to elaborate? Don't know if I need a caliber that large, since it can be used for deer and medium sized game. Although it could be a tempting choice, due to its popularity of .25 calibers!

Yes, I did check out the Savage's, but I settled on the CZ 527 American .223 Rem. In the future I might consider purchasing a Savage. Haven't decided what caliber yet though.

No, I don't plan on using it for deer hunting. If I was to get back into deer hunting, I would get a Marlin 336 .35 Rem., as that is the rifle I borrowed many years ago from one of my brothers, and I really liked that rifle.

I have a savage 17hmr and I'm really used to the accu-trigger now and the Savages are real tack drivers!. Remington 700 is also a beauty, lots of aftermarket parts too.
Which Savage 17hmr do you own? I am thinking about maybe getting the 93R17BVSS, or the 93R17 Classic in the future.

I own one Vanguard, in 300 Weatherby Magnum. It is magnificently finished, barrel blued to a mirror black, and you could just about go swimming in the finish on the stock. Is it worth the extra? Only if you appreciate a beautiful rifle.
Just my opinion, but if I were going for something in that range, I'd probably be thinking 22-250. Hotter cartridge, and .223 is getting expensive these days with the shortage. Not as dirt cheap as it once was.

I've got a shorty AR-15 that is set up with the collapsible stock and everything in an M-4 configuration and equipped with an EOTech holosight and rail for detachable flashlight and laser (which are generally more trouble than they're worth by the way). It's a handy little rifle. Does a good job and coyotes and feral dogs. The holosight is simple excellent on a rifle like this.
For more distant work I have a national match prepped AR-15 from what is now Armalite. It has a heavy custom barrel, national match sights and trigger. You can do some good shooting just with the iron sights. I have a Leupold 4.5-14x50 Mark 4 LR/T 30mm mounted on it. It is really accurate but to be honest the trigger needs some work. It has a NM trigger but I don't think it is up to the standards of the rest of the rifle. I want to get a better trigger for it. I think this one is bad enough that is effects some of my shooting in some situations. I find it a bit annoying.
I've got another flat top heavy barrel AR platform in pieces waiting to be put together. It's going to get sold I think though. I'm losing my interest in doing long range AR rifles in 556. They're just .223s and yeah they can go out a few hundred yards and yeah you can go through all sorts of dramatic measures to get them there with accuracy but they can't do anything useful when they get there. If I build any more AR rifles they'll be shorty M-4s or pistols. For distance maybe I'll start building bolt actions or FALs or something.

I agree. I went with the 22-250 for that reason. Faster and flatter then the 223. I went with a Browing A-Bolt Gold Medaltion. It is AWESOME!!!

.....257 Weatherby......

The 257 is one of the sweetest rounds you can shoot. It was Roy Weatherby's favorite round. I have a 257 in a Ruger No.1 and a 257 in a model 70 Winchester classic with a boss. The Ruger started life as a 25-06 and was punched out by my gunsmith to make it a 257.Roy Weatherby hunted with the 257 in Africa, and killed a Cape Buffalo, he did not recommend doing it with the small round, but he had taken all kinds of game witj it over the years. I am not a fan of Weatherby Rifles, but I do like their ammo. I shoot the Weatherby ammo mfg by Norma. The speed and accuracy of the 257 is awesome, I have killed turkeys(in Texas) at over 200 yds, shooting them in the head.Great all around bullet.
killed geese at 200 yds ,with head shots

According to "Shooting Times " mag. the 223 ammo is in short supply. This months issue.

I had the "Honor" of using a AR 16, I liked the 30 cal.M1 carbine much better.

Take a look at the new Savage bolt actions with "Accu-Trigger", They are reasonably priced and are extremely accurate, right out of the box.

My idea of a precision .223/5.56:
RRA Predator Pursuit
Williams set trigger (1.5 lb. break)
Harris SBRM bipod
A bunch of other mods
This rifle will shoot 1/2 - 3/4" groups at 100 yards all day long. It's the most accurate .223 I've every owned, and I've owned a few. Not to mention it looks fairly badass doing it. Every good American should own at least one AR-15, I have four

That's cause I bought it all....LOL
This is mine except mine has more add-ons

I got the mine in .223 because it is a military caliber and it will always be manufactured. Even if production stops for other better civilian rounds.

The 243 is also a good option for you and you can get them for a good price. my 2 cents

I have the 93R17FV. Its the black synthetic stock and stainless. I have a bushnell banner 3.5-10x36mm scope. The scope is made for the 17grain bullet. I can hit crows out past 100 yards all day long.
the BVSS is an awesome gun. I couldnt afford that much just for a bird/groundhog rifle so I got the FV instead.

Have you looked into the Remington 700's at all? My dad picked up a Remington 700 VLS last week in .22-250 and its one of the most beautiful guns I have ever seen....thumb hole laminate stock, stainless barrel, and a nice 6-20x50 leopold to top it off. The VLS is an amazing looking gun, and you cant go wrong with a remi 700. They make it in .223 also, but I would go with a .22-250 for an all out varmit/target gun. Faster shooting, flatter and not a bad recoil. That will be my next gun.
If you want something a little larger, a .243 is also sweet cal. I absolutely love my .243, I target shoot @500 yards and use it for deer also. It will rip a ground hog in half with a 70 grain ballistic tip, but also has enough umph to put a deer down.

I preffer the .223 over anything. wolf has ammo for them 500 rounds for 100$ at cabelas or just about anywhere on line. I have a H&R single shot in .223 with a leopold gold ring series scope. and shes a nail driver.also have bushmaster A3,This is my baby. here in AZ I shoot almost daily so I've got lots of trigger time and I've got a yugo 59-66 in 7.62x39 its heavy as heck when loaded pretty acurate at distance just loud and heavy. My A3 is best gun ever had.was not cheap,1,150$ but worth it,good brush gun, ranges anything I shoot it at.Mines a 16 inch barrel 1 in 9 twist is standerd on most rifles.
I have a 22-250 and its good round in clear dry weather but rain will tear bullet apart and forget about going thru brush. Round is just too fast. and they are not cheap 30$ plus for 50 rounds. and the shoulder pain is rough. i thought my wife kicked hard. for deer .223 is good round use FMJ rounds nice neat hole clean kill.Heck .223 will go thru Vests with 1/2 inch plates clean. semi auto or bolt is up to u. bolt lot more accurate in my opinion less the recoil but anything can be acurate in right hands. stay with .223 u will be happy

That is why my mind is pretty well set on staying with .223 caliber. I won't be hunting deer with it. Just wanted it, in case I would want to try hunting prairie dogs, or larger varmints at longer ranges. I believe I will be staying with bolt action also. I don't foresee myself hunting deer in the future, so I don't need a larger caliber rifle. I hunted deer when I was a teenager a few years, many years ago, and I borrowed one of my older brother's rifles. Namely, a Marlin model # 336 35 Remington. Thank you for your reply./end quote>
---Anytime. and I think its still good round for deer.gotta work for them then.gets ya to become one with the rifle...lol use the force luke...lol

Sorry guys but a .223 round is good in the right hands I've shot all game animals i hunt with a .223 and never had any problems. sure all the other rounds u fellas like are good for killing elephents or semi trucks. 7mm and other rounds waste so much of the animal its sad. and as for distance with .223 its in shooters hands u can use em with all the goodies u can find and I bet with iron sights I'll still beat ya with my A3. lets see that 1/2 in group at 100 yards with leapolds and such while u r standing. u would be lucky to hit paper. now If i cant see it I'm not gonna hit it u r right there but in the field how often do u get a bench to sit on and set up sights on target? all those big guns people have suggested need scopes barely any come with iron sights.
Hammer u got it right with .223 round and try keeping open sights unless u shoot from rested position all the time. and have fun
