My 300 ultra mag shoots the same bullet 300 fps faster than my 300 wby, I'd guess that the 7mm ultra mag is about that much faster than the 7mm mag in equal length barrels.

Quite a few guys around here are shooting .300 remington ultra mag. For what earthly reason I'm not exactly sure being that they're using them on whitetail deer and I doubt any of them are making shots over 300 yards. I know a few guys using the new 7 ultra mag but the majority are using older 7 mag. Speaking of which I saw a couple of strange failures of the 7 mag to drop deer after being hit hard which were really weird. Think it was bullet related.

I think Remington brought that out with the 300 ultra mag. The other is a belted mag, that means the shell casing has a brass belt around it near the end of the shell..I don't think the new casing went over that well, I haven't heard to much about hunters buying them up...to my knowledge, Weatherby still has the high road in Magnum ammo..especially their new hot 30-378

Captain,if you look at the book, the ultra mag is only faster in a larger bullet(180) grain..I don't know about a 7 mag...Here in the south, the round has not been used that much.I use a 150 grain for my 300 weatherby for whitetail....quick clean kill....speed is a factor..3600 ft lbs.I think Remington was trying to compete for the business success that weatherby has.A lot of folks are starting to use the 257 weatherby for whitetail in our area.....same speed but much lighter recoil.....

Can anyone tell me the differance between the 7mm mag and 7mm ultramag?
