If the condition of the bullet allows, measure the diameter. .355 is 9MM, .400 is 10MM. If its .357 or .358 then it's a 38.
Not that it will make much difference as there are many pistols and rifles that will fire these calibers.
Edit: Oops just reread your post. I missed the last line. Closest pistol bullet commonly used would be the 9MM. There is a rifle calibre that measures .348". The rifle bullet would be over 200 grains in weight. The pistol 9MM well under 180 grains. There are heavy 9MM rifle bullets as well.

Usually a 9mm FMJ comes in around 115 grains depending on what brand you are shooting. However the largest grain I have seen in a 9mm is 147grain.

I just found one of our trucks has been shot with what appears to be a 9mm or 10mm pistol. What measurment would these bullets be. There is a good chance that some jackoff was shooting in the air on newyears and it just happened to come down on the roof of our truck.
Our truck is 11'6" high and the only other way it could of been hit is out of the neighbors house.BR>
The bullet was found on top the box of the truck so it did not have enough power to fully penetrate, however left a hole.
The bullet measures .350 of an inch which converts to 8.89mm right???
