Here it is June 11th and it was 100 degrees here yesterday...and I cant wait for deer season. My 11 yr old and 7 yr old remind me everyday that deer season is just around the corner.

Sorry to hear about your father. I hope my boys will continue to hunt and fish after I am gone. This will be my 11 yr olds 3rd season for hunitng. The 7 yr old like to go scouting and help put up stands. I wouldnt trade my time in the woods w/them for all the pork rinds in Oklahoma!!!! It is a shame the kids that dont have a father figure to take them outdoors. The importance of the family is slowly sinking away in America.

Haven't seen a lot of bucks so far but I've seen tons of does and fawns. Lots of twins this year.

Well said Chambo10. All of the older men I grew up spending time in the mountains, working or hunting, with have passed over. Now it's my turn to pass on the skills and stories. Hunting has changed but the basic concepts remain the same.
The camaraderie that develops around a campfire, especially if it is a tough hunt or difficult task, goes a long way to forging the steel of a young mans back. Watching and learning to appreciate the tough tenderness of the good men I spent time with taught me a lot as a youth and bode well for me over the years.
The brief time of youth must not be waisted by allowing youngsters to wile away there time in unscrupulous activities. The simple honesty and trials of the hunt builds character which will follow a person thru their entire life.
Take a kid hunting, it will reward you immediately and last a lifetime for your student.

I started hunting when I was 7...my dad would drop me off in the edge of a swamp and let me look for squirrels...I learned to shoot with a 22 Winchester single shot. A bayer aspirin box on its side, makes a pretty tough target at 50 yds. ....My dad came up during the great depression, and every shot had to count,it was a source of food for them...He tought me how to hunt and scout for game. My dad has been deceased for 20 years, and I miss his telling of old time hunting stories...

Getting closer. For now I am "patiently" waiting the return of my turkey from the taxidermist! I am suppost to give him a call a few weeks before archery season, and he would try and fit it in for me. As for now the head is being freeze dried.

Glad to hear the youngins are evcited about hunting. We need every one of them interested as possible. The time you spend with them in the great outdoors will be priceless someday. My dad passed about 1.5 years ago and last hunting season was my first without him here. I never realized how much I would miss him until he was gone. He was only 61. Give your kids a hug and tell them how much you love them. Circle opening day on a calender and cross off the days with them every day to help build their enthusiasm.

Thanks, it still hurts a lot when I can't see him although I talk to him often. Hunting was the biggest thing we ever had together and it is tough without him. I have two younger brothers of which 1 hunts & the other doesn't. My father never saw my younger brother get a buck, but this last season he got a bear with his bow on my land and then got a ice 8 pt buck the second day of gun season. I told him our dad was right there with us when we got them. I totally believe my dad helped him get those animals. I shot a big fat doe with my muzzle loader (first muzzle loader kill in my second year of trying it) and I shot an 8 pt buck later in the season. I paid half of the taxidermy cost for my brother to have shoulder mounts of both his bear and the deer. Life is too short not to do for those you love. Nice to hear you enjoy the kids so much. You are right when you say the family unit is suffering in this country. I think I have rambled long enough, but thanks again.

Where in PA are you? I hunt in 3C near Montrose on my uncle in-laws 200 acres. Shot a basket rack 8 pt there last year. Good hunting there for deer and turkey.

We have had a terrable summer so far. It has either been way to hot or pouring rain. WE have gone from so humid you can't stand it outside to amazing rain storms. We have had several damaging floods here in upstate NY including one storm late Sat night. The rain was coming down side ways and hitting the windows so hard my puppy was barking at it because she didn't know who was knocking at the door. 3 inches in one hour. Early bear starts here Sept 16th. That is the first thing we can hunt around here. I'll be there in my treestand with my bow just hoping for some luck and a nice black blob to materialize in the woods.
Good luck to all.

I can't wait for this season as well. You have to miss those who have passed and all the stories they told. We retell them all just like they did and laugh. My dad passed away at the young age of 61 on Feb 4, 2005. I miss him dearly. His partner who was like a second dad to me passed away last year on Thanksgiving day. I miss him so much as well. I know they are together somewhere saying they are hunting, but most likely just sitting in a truck eating a sandwich and chips, drinking diet pepsi. Always remember those who inspired you to greatness.

I don't have any kids of my own, but have taken some others. I have two brothers that are 7 & 9 years younger than I. The youngest one has always hunted but the other brother got his license when he was 16 and hunted that year. He had a deer walk right up to him and he couldn't shoot it. That was the last time he hunted until last season. He bought a license and hunted with my brother & I as much as he could. He saw some turkeys and a few deer and almost got a shot at a deer. He was very happy and enjoyed it. I gave him my old bow and he is going to bowhunt this year as well as gun hunt. Hopefully he will enjoy it again. I can't wait and I will set up everything so he will shoot first like I did for my other brother. Good luck to all.

Hi.
I live in Utica. It is right in the center of the state. I own 17.6 acres in Norway which is about 40 minutes N of me. I have 3 Moultrie cameras up there and get tons of pics. They are really neat scouting tools. Where are you located at?

I am in Newark - about 1.5 hours west of you. I have had mostly does on the cam. They certainly are fun to use. One young buck I got a picture of is going to be HUGE in a few years. If I can stand lettin him go by

I've been Coyote and Ground hog hunting all summer. Got close to 200 ground hogs and 4 coyotes so far since May. I shot one real young pup a couple days ago. Stupid thing ran full blast right up to me, I had to stand up to get him to stop from running me over. So as i stood up he put the brakes on and sat and looked at me. .22-250 dropped him at 15 yards faster then a bag of dirt.
I'll wait til aug. now before i go for anymore coyotes. That pup was young, but he was on his own. He really wanted that dieing rabbit before anyone else did because he didnt slow down at all lol, til he seen me of course.
I've only seen 2 nice bucks so far this spring. Their anthlers arent full size yet but i keep seeing them in earily light and cant see the horns right now before the velvet is so dark. Tons of fawns and does though. I wont be getting time off for shotgun season this year. So i'll have to use my crossbow after work and weekends. Earily morning is my favorite time, definatly wont be getting out as much as I like, owell.
