I should be able to make the 28th also.

See everyone there!

Ty-I won't be able to ride this weekend or next due to softball tournaments. With school starting back up I will be back limited to Sat and Sun unfortunately.

Welcome to all the new guys and gals!! Hope to meet you on the 28thBR>

Ty, I'm not sure yet if I can make it tommorrow or not. I get off at 7am. I'll try to get my fat ass out of bed but I'm not promising anything.

Posted by: gsettle081

I talked with my social director and the 28th will work for us. We may spend the night and ride a little on Sunday. See you there. (Bob-- send me your cell phone # so when I get lost you can come and get me!!)

Ladies and Gentlemen:

For quite sometime Keith and I have been wanting to have a group ride in SE Oklahoma. Keith and I talked earlier this evening (We talk to each other a lot because NO ONE else will) and we have decided that we would like for this ride to occurr in September over one of the two following weekends. Let us know what dates you all think would be the best.

The dates we would like to have everyone look at are September 18 & 19 or September 24 & 25. That is a weekend and I am willing to take off on a Saturday for this. We could handle this one of two ways. We could leave really early Saturday morning or we could leave Friday evening after everyone got off work. That would be up to everyone else to decide.

The riding area (if you want to check your maps) would be in Pushmataha County. We would head 12 miels SE of Antlers to Rattan, there we would turn NE and head to the tiny town of CLOUDY. WE woudl ride out of cludy on the logging roads. The pics on my picture page are from this area. So I would like everyone to think this over and let us know if you all would like to go on this ride. There are hundreds of miles of riding opportunity in this area and the camping is MAGNIFICIENT. I really think everyone would have a great time on this ride and we have a lot of new members so I think it would be great to start them off with a great ride.

So give it a thought and we can discuss it furher at the August 28 meeting. Thank you for your support.

Sounds like a blast!! Did you say "Camp"? Who brings the TV & satellite dish? j/k The pictures look GREAT. I look forward to discussing this at the meeting. Just out of curiosity, I was looking at the map and saw no roads. Do we have to ride our 4 wheelers from Rattan TO cloudy, or do we helicopter them in?

As you guys get to know me better, You will find out that I am about as full of $hit as some of you are, so bear with me. If something sounds rhetorical or smart a$$ed, then it is probably a feeble attempt at humor. Look forward to the meeting,

Jason

Well everyone. I guess I am heading out to the river all alone today. I am leaving right now so I will be ther at about 4:30. If anyone is coming, call me at 405-202-5085 and let me know. see you guys later.

Tyler

Posted by: LERaptor

Hey guys, for those of you who don't have a ride for the meeting on the 28th I have a 220 Bayou that I'll let someone ride for the day. I have it forsale so as long as it hasn't sold yet I'll let whoever ride it if anyone is interested.

Just trying to do my good deed for the day.

Posted by: TyShark9

The only thing I hate about riding alone is getting stuck with nobody to help ... I got stuck in a huge mud hole, the water came a little past my knees. my front wheels got caught on a bank and my rear wheels kept spinning It took me 30 minutes to get the quad out of the mud But the rest of the day was pretty good

Bob,
I met a couple guys and told them about the club. They said they would try to be there on the 28th. So that could be 2 more members.

Well, I'll see you guys on the 28th.

Tyler

Posted by: LERaptor

Hey Ty, sorry I couldn't make it I didn't get up until 4. Was the river up?

Posted by: Jamesh921

Hey Phil,
I'll take you up on the offer to use the 220.
I was just planning on coming down for the meeting, but if you're offering the use of your quad for the day, I'll get there earlier and get dirty with you guys.

James

Posted by: gsettle081

The extra quad was a nice thing to offer.... Has anyone else got an extra one? We need one more for one of our friends that is coming with us fromTexas... Let us know, or if there is a place to rent one. She would like a nice automatic. She is even less expierienced than Ginny and I.
Are any of you guys coming down early to ride? We will either come in Friday night or leave EARLY Saturday morning and be there about 10AM. Where are some places to stay? ( like a Hampton Inn, or LaQuinta. Nothing fancy, but not camping out either.)
Let us know.
This will be fun.
James, on a side note, BRING YOUR CALCULATOR!

Posted by: Jamesh921

Hey Gordon,
If it's OK with Phil, I'm willing to share my borrowed quad (assuming Phil will let me use it) with your friend. We can take turns riding. I don't mind sharing someone elses stuff hehe - just razzin' ya Phil

Bring my calculator???
Absolute great idea, Gordon. It'll help me determine "exactly" how long it will take you to BBQ me a burger

Actually, what Gordon is referring to is the fact that I'm doing an "unscientific" Economic Impact Study (as most of you may already know). It would help tremendously if you guys would be willing to keep track of exactly how much you spend on this trip/meeting and email me the results after you get home and tally it all up. And, it would be GREAT if you could itemize it instead of giving me one total amount.

I'll post my Economic Impact questions below to help you out. Here they are:

Economic Impact
a) In the vehicle you drove/rode in on your last visit to an ORV park that charged for riding, how many people rode with you?
b) How much did it cost for each individual to ride the ORV park?
c) Were there any camping/lodging costs involved? If so, how much for each night?
d) How many nights did you stay?
e) How much did you spend on fuel?
f) How much did you spend at restaurants?
g) How much did you spend on food/snacks at local grocery stores/quick stops?
h) Did you or anyone with you spend any time in town shopping for items not associated with ORVing?
i) Did you participate in any other events like boating, fishing, swimming, horseback riding or other event while on your last ORV outing? If so, please list them and the costs associated with them.
j) Please list any other costs you incurred while on your last outing to an ORV outing that charged for riding.

General Information
1) Please list the estimated ages of all those who went with you on your last ORV outing to a trail system that charged for riding.
2) How many male? How many female?
3) What did you like most about your trip?
4) What did you dislike most about your trip?
5) How many miles did you travel to get to the ORV Park?
6) How many days did you stay?
7) How many ORVs did you or your group take?
8) How many trips like you have described do you take per year?
9) How did you learn about the ORV Park you visited – flyer, word of mouth, brochure, magazine, signage, newspaper ad, radio, TV, other (please specify)
10) What is your annual household income? Under $10,000 $10,000-$20,000 $20,000-$30,000 $30,000-$40,000 $40,000-$50,000 Over $50,000 Do not give actual incomes please.

I appreciate you guys helping me with this very vital study. Please copy and paste this Study into an MSWord document and type your answers at the end of each question. It would be helpful if you would post your answers in BOLD type to help identify your answers at a quick glance. Then, email the whole MSWord document to harmony@okplus.com as an attachment.

Or,

You could simply copy and paste this Study into an email, post your answers after each question (preferrably in BOLD type) and email it to me directly.

Either way will be fine.

Please remember that absolutely NO personal info will be given out to anyone.

I appreciate your help,
James

I want to urge all the new Seminole members to talk to your fellow ATVers and tell them about your positive experience with the Central Oklahoma ATV Club. My hope is that you can motivate them into attending the meeting/ride on the 28th in Purcell. The more local people we can get involved on this issue, the better chances we will have at getting approval for the new trail system at Sportsman Lake. Even if they don't want to join the club, I'm sure they would enjoy a new place to ride and meeting these fine guys who are supporting our effort.

Course, once they meet the guys from the CoacATVclub, I'm sure they'll want to join.

Anyway, since Seminole is the newest addition to this club, let's do our best to make a big show of support for the guys who are supporting us!!

James, or Bob
I forgot about asking someone to bring a camera. I will bring mine, but it is not that great for "action" shots. I would like a picture of all the members and quads lined up side by side.

One more thing James....
Bring your wife. You and her can ride our Honda and Bombardier. This might be a good chance to compare several machines and see which one you like the best.

Posted by: TyShark9

Phil,
The river was starting to get low. I could almost cross in a few areas. If it doesn't rain much more, we should be able to cross just about anywhere we want.

Tyler

Gordon,

My camera had a quad accident itself a while back so it is not functional. so yeah bring yours.

Bob "Insert your own concept of wit here" Bobman

My camera should be there, and I can usually get some pretty good pics with it.

The hard part about it, would be getting me to actually upload the pics for others to observe/admire.

I'm going to Stillwater tomorrow & am thinking of taking my 4 wheelers. Does anyone know the best place to ride? I understand there are 2 or 3 places to ride, So any input will be helpful. If anyone is that way tomorrow or Monday, Give me a call at (405) 584-0921.

Thanks,

Jason

Posted by: Jamesh921

Brink,
I've been to Stillwater's "Mud, Sweat and Gears" trailhead a few weeks ago during my research and this is what I found.

There is NO on-duty person at the trailhead to take your money. Instead, you have to purchase your "yearly" permit in town (choice of 3 different locations) for $25.00 per person, per year. They may have family permits that I'm not aware of - maybe someone else on here would know.
Once you purchase your permit, they will give you the combination/key to the park, let yourself in, and ride at your own leisure.
In my opinion, this management system is not effective, but works great for the people who want to "cheat the system".

Anyway, they have 500 acres to ride on, but I have no info on if they are fun trails or not.

I think that I read that Cooperland has 40 acres of trails (unless that was a misprint on the website I saw it on). Not many trails could be constructed on that small partial of property.

I also noticed a track, trail south of Perkins, Ok but I didn't get the name or any info on it. The guys on this board can probably help you allot more than I can, so I'd rely on them more than me. So far, I can only respond on what I've "been told", not what I know.

James

Posted by: Bobman

James,

Where roughly is this Mud, Sweat and Gears located? Which direction and how far out of Stillwater? I will look on the web and see if I can find anything relating to it.

Bob

Posted by: Jamesh921

Mud, Sweat and Gears is located approx 5 1/2 miles southwest of Stillwater. When I visited, about 5-6 weeks ago, there was some major road construction going on that limited access to it. But, it "was" accessible. The unfortunate thing is that very few people know about the trail system. I asked 4 people before I finally found a deputy sherriff who had even heard about it. Fortunately, he new exactly where it was and gave me directions (even escorted me part of the way).

Once I got to the trailhead I found the gate was locked with no way to access the property but to hike in, which I did for about 3/4 mile. But, my wife who was with me had on street shoes so we turned back.
Back at the trailhead I found a sign that had 3 different locations with phone numbers on it where you could buy a permit to ride the trails. I finally reached someone at the 3rd number I called (which is understandable since it was a weekend and the other 2 numbers were to the Park Director's office and another ATV dealership).

The person who answered the phone identified themself as a member of the Stillwater Trail Riders Club. She stated that "they" take care of the trail system and informed me that, if I would drive back into town, she would sell me a "yearly" permit at a cost of $25.00 and give me a key/combination to the gate - no dayride fees are provided. You either join for the year or you don't ride. No exceptions.

There are NO improved ammenities provided such as electric, water, bathrooms, etc... and there is NO overnight camping allowed.

She said that some years they sell as little as 500 yearly permits and some years they sell as many as 1000 yearly permits.
If you lived in the vacinity and utilized this trail often, you would probably come out ahead. If you were a one-time visitor, you lose.

I made some subtle recommendations to her about how her club could improve attendance and generate more revenue and she soundly refused. She said, "If we get more people out there that just means we'll have to pick up after them. I can't keep up with the litter as it is, so why would I want more people coming out"?
My thoughts were two-fold:
1) I can't believe people who so desperately need places to ride would abuse the few trail systems available to them and thought that they would be getting what they deserve if the trails get shut down, and

2) If the City of Stillwater and the Stillwater Trail Riders Club would manage their trail system "properly and more adequately" they wouldn't have those problems.

Anyway, if anyone would like to visit Stillwater's Mud, Sweat and Gears trails, I would suggest calling the Stillwater City Hall and ask for the Park Director's office. They should be able to give you adequate directions to the park and answer any questions you have about permits and such.

Sincerely,
James

Posted by: gsettle081

Ok Guys,
I have an idea and I want you to blow holes in it. Then it will get out of my system.

I want to rent ATVs to customers. I have checked all around Texas and there are some places in Houston, but not any in North Texas or Oklahoma.
I know insurance would be a killer, but what other items are needed. Trailers, and trucks to deliver the machines are no problem. What else am I missing.
Gordon

Posted by: TyShark9

You should probably include helmets and other protection. That way, if they get hurt and they wern't wearing a helmet, they can't take you to court, cause you gave them the stuff and they didn't wear it. Also, you probably already know this, but make them sign a waver. You also might need to rent out trailers. Thats all I can think of. BR>
Tyler

Posted by: Bobman

Gordon,

The only thing I can think of that you are missing is start up capital. The insurance as you stated would be substantial, perhaps to the point that it would not be cost efficient, perhaps that is why there are currently no such operations in the area. At least that is why I had always assumed taht there were none. I don't know anything about Texas law, ,and I do not know much about Oklahoma law, but I think that anything to do with transportation has to obtain a license from teh Corporation Commission. Now whether an ATV rental enterprise would constitute what they classify as transportation bI don't know. But you might give them a call.

Bob

Posted by: gsettle081

Ok good points
If Helmets were given out, Start up capital was not a problem, Trailers, and Trucks were available. What else would you need? I think picking someone up at the airport and delivering them to the trails would be a good deal. I am just really frustrated with the dealers around here. If you can rent motorcycles, wave runners, skiboats, horses, and motor homes, why hasn't someone done the ATV rental thing.
THERE HAS TO BE SOMETHING I AM MISSING!

Posted by: Brink74868

I would talk to an attorney about what specific things could be written into a rental agreement. I know when renting a car, you have to provide your insurance company information and purchase SEPERATE insurance for anything extra (incidental scratches, dings, etc). I would then call my insurance company and ask what is available (such as daily, weekly ATV rental insurance) and pass it on to the customer. Also, like Ty said, I would RENT trailers, helmets (I believe that if you offer to rent a helmet, you would be covered, but that reffers back to visiting with an attorney), GPS's, and anything else ATV related. Like I said, I think calling an ayyorney and an insurance agent would get the ball rolling pretty quick. Just an idea, see if you can get your hands on a rental agreement from a car rental place or better yet, from someone who rents jet ski's and I bet you could alter the language pretty easily to fit atv rentals. That is a great idea.

Don't think you're crazy... People told Alexander Graham Bell, Ben Frankiln, and Sam Walton that they were crazy. I'd like to be one of their decendants!!!!

That is actually a great idea!! The closer to a popular riding area, the better!

Good Luck,

Jason C. Brinker

Posted by: Brink74868

Oh yeah, I almost forgot.

Take no less than a major credit card, and make sure it is authorized for probably no less than $1500.00. (that should be plenty to cover what the normal person could damage in a day or 2). Also, language in the rental agreement authorizing you to charge that card for uncovered damage (such as blowing an engine due to abuse). I'm reaching, but you asked for ideas.

Once again, GOOD LUCK!!!!

Jason

Posted by: gsettle081

I've got a copy of the rental agreement from West Virginia. They covered the helmets fairly easy. WEAR IT! WITH THE MACHINE. I signed an agreement to wear the helmet, eye protection, and gloves. I think I would set it up some where like Antlers, or Perkins. That way someone would be Three hours from DFW airport. I think the main customers would be locals (within 200 miles) that have family or friends coming in and need an extra quad.
Why couldn't a club offer this?
We all need extra quads form time to time. At least I think we all do. The hardest thing we are expieriencing right now is how to have 4 quads for two couples to ride together. I will get our second one when the new Hondas come out. My buddy will get another one whehever his wife gets into riding 4 wheelers. ( as soon as we can take her some place like Purcell, or Antlers, and let her ride trails.) Knowing her she will be as hooked as Ginny and I are.
Trailers would be a natural. Tents might be good. T Shirts, Caps, Helmets, gloves, gas cans, folding chairs, etc. would also be good. Bar B Que grills could also be put on the rental package. I just think of the things we take when we go.

So far none of you have shot this idea down... That scares me, because there is got to be some reason no one has done this in Texas or Oklahoma.

Posted by: Bobman

Gordon,

Like I said earlier, in Oklahoma you may have to get everything approved and licensed by the Corporation Commission as this may fall under the heading of "Transportation" That might be why no one in Oklahoma has undertaken such an endeavor.

Bob

Posted by: gsettle081

Bob

Is the Corpoation Commision in Oklahoma City? Do they have district offices? Let me know. I am still working details, but I think it is a possibility.

Posted by: Bobman

Gordon, the Corporation Commission is in Oklahoam City, it is located in the Jim Thorpe building near the capital.

Their web address is as follows: http://www.occ.state.ok.us/

Oklahoma Corporation Commission: (405) 521-2211

Jim Thorpe Building Address:
2101 North Lincoln Blvd.
Oklahoma City, OK 73105

Hope this helps.

Thanks! As this progresses, I will go see them. What other agencies would need to be involved. What about the Bureau of Lands. (or whoever issues your land use riding permits)

Posted by: Heywood

hey gordon,

i know it will work. atv rentals are everywhere you look in colorado. i havent seen any that allow you to keep the bikes overnight. most offer 4 hour (1/2 day) and 8 hour (day) rentals. if they cant be ridden from the site, they offer free delivery to the trail head.

the only thing i can think of you'll need is a good mechanic.

maybe you could partner with the guy at those cabins. that would make a natural pairing. and of course ... club members discounts ... dont forget those.

i'll have my camera at the river .. what else should i bring?

Your pants Keith, your pants.

We don't want another "incident".

Posted by: Jamesh921

Oh gosh, I hate it when "incidents" begin repeating themselves - because then it becomes a "pattern". Patterns turn into "traditions" and the next thing you know traditions become a "rule".

PLEASE, no more rules, especially when they evolve from "incidents"!!!

The trails are not marked, but it is prety hard to get lost out there. if you ride south, just turn around and ride north
Pretty easy to get back to where you started. Most of the trails lead back to the same place. But if you get lost you will need to take off your pants and tie them around your head, then get mud and paint your face. That way you can blend in with all the aborigines that live near the river. if they say "sacrifice", start running.

Tyler

Posted by: Bobman

Gordon,

The State agency that issues your "land use permit" is the Oklahoma Dept of Wildlife, 1801 N. Lincoln, they are just down the street from the Jim Thorpe Commission which houses the Corp, Commission. What you would want to do there is set yourself up as a dealer that sells hunting and fishing licenses, because the land use permits for riding in the Wildlife Managemetn areas are handled thru the same folks that sell hunting & Fishing licenses.

Bob

Posted by: Jamesh921

Well Guys,
We attended the Lake Board meeting today to discuss recommending to the City Council that the ATV trails be approved at Sportsman Lake. Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful.
There are only 3 members on the Lake Board right now. Another Councilor and I have our city attorney working on drafting an ordinance that would allow 5 members to serve on the board. But, changing the number of Lake Board members entails changing the City Charter, which will take a vote of the people. It should pass, but the vote won't be until November, which doesn't help us now.

The issue isn't dead though. The City Council could still go against the Lake Board recommendation and approve the trails.

Two of the Lake Board members cited "erosion concerns" as their basis to vote against the trails. That seems to be the primary concern. Money, Tourism, fairness to the community, etc... is not a factor in this equasion. Nope, it's concerns over erosion - so that's where we need to focus our area of rebuttal.
Anybody got any "undisputable" information we could use to combat this issue?

James

BTW, you guys would be proud of your new CoacATVclub members. They were courteous and polite, but they put up ONE HECK of a fight. I was darn proud of them.

One other note: The Lake Board member who voted "for" approving the ATV trails promptly resigned when the other 2 members voted against him. He said he couldn't serve on a board that refused to treat "all" community members fair.
I think (hope) we got him talked into staying though. He's the only member who cares about being fair and we don't want to lose him. We'll see what happens - he was pretty upset.

Posted by: td250r

Are you guys still planning a meeting for the 21st? I have a new toy and need to ride, and to finally meet all you guys.

<----- check out new pics.

Posted by: Brink74868

James (and everyone else),

After the ATV portion was over, the lake board heard from the equestrians about their plans for the (our) portion. After a lengthy proposal, the lake board unanimously voted to once again recommend to the council that it be awarded to the equestrians. The next item on the agenda (after the final vote was already done and the equestrians were "given" the land) was "oh yeah, is there any other group that would like to address the board about the land in question?" I raised my hand to ask the purpose of the agenda item and the chair failed to recognize me. The chairman of the lake board has been a VERY active member of the equestrian group for many years as well as a lake board member.

Just thought I'd catch everybody up.

Don't know if we're going to cook. We did last time, and it was pretty d@mn good....We just assumed that you would be bringing the crab and lobster this time. (Bring enough for about 40 people.) BR>
Seriously...Not sure if we're going to cook on the 28th, but I'm all for it, and can bring another load of burgers....And anything else that is needed (buns/mustard/chips).

If your brother has never ridden, this is pretty much the perfect place for hime to ride. Nothing too technical, and lots of open spaces/room for error.

As for the trails being marked, this isn't really a formal riding area. There are no rules, no campsites, and no trail markings. You ride what you want, where you want, when you want. You can also camp wherever you want.

It's pretty much "every man for himself" down there. Trucks, Jeeps, sandrails are fairly common, but they generally stay in areas that the quads don't go.

Posted by: gsettle081

That sounds great as there may be 5 of us. Two have not ridden very much. It looks like we will leave Saturday morning the 28 th probably around 9. Tell me again EXACTLY where to go and unload. ( and no comments about going to hell because we are from Texas) I could re read all these posts, but that would be too easy and take too long.
Also, are any of you guys going to ride on Sunday? We will either ride in Purcell on Sunday morning or go to Lake Murray. Let us know.
Here is my cell phone # 214-734-8664
Send me yours so I can hook up with you guys.

Posted by: nukeim

What do you drive?

Only reason I ask, is because (depending on your rig) you can park right on the riverbottom.

That's what most of us do. My buddy parks his down there, and he drives a 2 wheel drive 1/2 ton with bald tires.

Ronnie made it down there with his big a$$ed oil burner and a pretty good sized trailer.

Posted by: gsettle081

We will be in my Dodge ram or my buddies NEW F150 Crew cab. The trailer has both quads on it. If we find another quad, it will be ithe back of a pickup. (probalby will take both trucks as my buddy does not want to scratch his up. So far NO LUCK on the extra quad.)
Depends on if he talks his wife into going. We have never had any problem geting out of an area.

Posted by: nukeim

Truck will not get scratched unless you decide to do more than park it. It's a gravel road to get down there, and I've never scratched the paint on either truck getting down there.

It will get dusty (gravel road) and maybe a little mud, as the road is in disrepair, and usually has a lot of water-filled holes.

Posted by: nukeim

**Click here** for a picture of what the road looks like for most of the way...There is then about a 35 yard shot through the trees to get to the riverbottom...Plenty of clearance to get down there with all but the biggest of truck/trailer setups....Unless you are talking RV....Which I wouldn't suggest, as some of it is a little off-camber.

Posted by: LERaptor

td250r.... Thats a sweet ride man, love the black look. How do you like it?

Posted by: Bobman

Gordon....

Here are some driving directions for you. You will take the first Purcell Exit you come to. I believe this is exit 91, there will be a McDonald's there. You will follow the signs into Purcell. You will be on Green St. This is the major thoroughfare of Purcell. You will go north on Green until you get to MAIN st. MAIN St. Runs east and west. You will turn east and continue east through several stop signs. Eventually you will come to a street called "Canadian". You will simply continue eastbound on MAIN and it will go down a pretty good hill. You will see the Amtrak Depot at the bottom of the hill.

DO NOT park at the Amtrak Depot not matter what you do. If you want to park in the area and ride to the river there is an old red warehouse and you can park on the NORTH side of it. If you want to drive to the river itself you will turn right (south) on the gravel road that runs in front of the depot. Keep going south for about a quarter mile and you will come to a rail crossing. Turn left so that you drive across the tracks and then turn back left (North) again and follow the gravel/dirt road for quite a ways. You will see a couple of places to turn in but DO NOT TURN in those two places. You will see a small yellow railroad signal sign on the left hand side of the road that says "P-65" or "P-68" or somethign like. You will then make the first right turn and like Mike said, it is about 35 yards through the woods to the riverbottom. You should have plenty of ground clearance as I see cars down there a lot.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Bob

Yeah, the sign says P65....This is a pic of it.

Go 100 yards past that sign, and turn right through the trees.

And our nominee for best photography in a short subject Documentary is Mike.

Mike Is nominated for his superb documenting and presentation of "The p-65 Sign that tells you where to turn to get to the river" photo which will serve as reference and learning materials for generations to come.

Hey Bob,
I thought it was a good picture. Plenty of definition, contrast,a good subject and in focus. Besides, We need pictures to get to your meeting. You guys in Oklahoma don't have meetings much do you???

BOB IS IN THE NEWS !!!!

Yep, Bob showed up in Seminole's only newspaper today. The Producer printed Bob's article supporting the ATV trails in a section they call "Another Point Of View". Anyone can have their article printed in the newspaper in this section. It will be printed in its entirety just as it is recieved.
If you would like to have your point of veiw posted in the Seminole Producer conglomerate (circulation of 5500), go to www.seminoleproducer.com
Scroll down on the left side of the webpage until you see "Write Another Point Of Veiw".
Click on it and post your "Point of Veiw" and it will soon appear in our daily paper (usually one - two busniess days).

You can also reach the news editor (Karen Anson) by going to the same website and clicking on "News". She checks her email regularly.

The Seminole Producer ran a story about the equestrian trails at Sportsman Lake in last Sunday's paper. They stated that they would be running a feature story about ATVers in THIS Sunday's paper. Usually, to be included in Sunday's paper, you must have your letter/point of veiw emailed to them by noon on Friday. However, sometimes (not always) they still have time to get it in if you're a few hours late.

I think it would be great if we had some support letters in Sunday's paper along with the article they plan to run, but that's up to you guys.

I shrunk and compressed that one for the web.....

You should see the original. It's a poster quality masterpiece, with 3.2 megapixel goodness!

Print it out and I will hang it in my office!!! I am serious as my ofice looks like a barn, and it has old pictures of trains, barns, and fields in it.

Posted by: nukeim

If you really are serious, I do have quite a few pictures of that train for some weird reason....I was really bored.

Posted by: gsettle081

I am SERIOUS!! I would love that shot, or some of the depot, or old barns in your area. The more the better. For years, I have wanted to have an office in my home that reflected the barn look. Guess it stems form my mohter always asking if I were "raised in a barn" Now I can tell her "yes"
I will send you pictures when the remodel project is further along. Hopefully, by the 28th, I will be thru with the main phase.

Most email programs attachment constraints will not allow very large file sizes. But if you think your inbox can handle it, I can email them today. If not, remind me again before the meeting, and I'll drop them onto a CD before the meeting.

Let me know.

Well, I know a few of you guys wrote in to "Another Point Of Veiw" to be featured in our Sunday paper, BUT, none of your letters made it into it. I have mixed feelings about this issue because I felt we would have made a tremendous impact by having our support letters in the same issue as the ATV article. However, after thinking it over, I'm sure your letters will be posted in the upcoming newspapers. This spreads the attention out to a wider group of readers and will bring more attention to our project. Although I initially was upset that our support letters didn't get published in this Sunday's paper, I now feel it will further our project with added exposure.

Since the letters that were already written didn't get into Sunday's paper (as expected) I'm sure they will show up in Tuesday or Wednesday's paper. If they don't, you can expect I'll be raising a BIG STINK about it to our news editor (whom I went to school with). They'll get posted FOR SURE sooner or later. Especially since our newspaper touts that they guarantee that all "points of veiw" will be acknowleded.

With that said, I would like to reiterate the fact that it would be beneficial to our project if everyone would go to www.seminoleproducer.com and scroll down on the left side until you see "Write Another Point Of Veiw".
Click on "Write Another Point Of Veiw" and write your support letter for the ATV trails at Sportsman Lake. This will make a big impact on the community and our city councilmen. Bob's point of veiw has already been posted and read - Gordon's will soon be in the paper as well - this is YOUR chance to have your opinion heard - UNCENSORED.

If you do plan to write "Another Point Of Veiw", I would suggest being polite and reaffirming how "fair" the ATVers are willing to be toward the equestrian riders. Below you will find the ATVers proposal for the ATV Sportsman Lake proposal:

REVISED VERSION 8-14-04

ORV (Off-Road Vehicle) Proposed Sportsman Lake Family Trails Project
“Preferred Development Plan”

Existing Site Conditions
Parking/Off-loading Area Phase 1
The proposed parking/off-loading area for Phase 1 of the ORV trails would be located directly across the road from the entrance to Cove 3 (see diagram). Since the Lake Ranger passes by this location several times each day, this location allows for easy access to monitor the trailhead and its visitors. The trailhead would need to be clearly marked so that visitors would know exactly where to enter and pay. Signage would also be needed to post the park fees, rules and disclaimers at the trailhead. It would also be advisable that each visitor signs a “Waiver of Liability” before entering the trail system. Parents would need to sign for those participants under the age of 18 (depending on Oklahoma law).

Phase 2
In Phase 2 of this project, the parking/off-loading area would be moved to Cove 7. At that time, the trailhead would be relocated as well. The ORV trails would begin at the entrance at Cove 7 and run northwesterly – winding up and around inside the lake property. The Trailhead is proposed to be placed directly across the street, on the west side that is, of the entrance to cove 7.
Once the visitors had parked and unloaded in Cove 7, a designated trail with appropriate signage, would direct them to the Trailhead. This trail would keep the ORVs off the park road and be a safer access to the trailhead.
The “main” trail would be designed as a loop and would end back at the trailhead.
When Phase 2 is enacted, it is requested that camping and RV pads be cleared for visitors who wish to primitive camp. Later, as funds are generated by the trail use, private donations and/or grant money is secured, these primitive campsites would be upgraded to improved campsites that offer water and electricity.

Another future improvement when funds become available would be the construction of a bathhouse.

Trail Location
The current proposed area of Phase 1 will encompass all City property located on the southwest side of the main park thoroughfare. This area is currently undeveloped and would allow users the benefit of a trail system that would not interfere with other lake users.
The orange area located at the top of the proposed area of Phase 1 represents a buffer zone. This buffer zone has been proposed to keep noise from interfering with the equestrian trailhead.
Please note that phase 1 no longer encompasses any area in Cove 3. To accomplish this, the trails would use the right-of-way to pass from the southern land area to the northern land area. This proposed change will eliminate multiple road crossings.

It is still proposed that the equestrian riders, who wish to use these trails, are more than welcome to do so.
It is also still proposed that the ATV trails would be closed to ATV use when the equestrian community hosts their sanctioned riding events.

Trailhead/Entrance - Operations of the Trailhead/Money Collections
There are several potential possibilities to operate the trailhead for monetary collections. Following is an example of a few.
1) The ORV trailhead could be operated on the honor system much like the equestrian trails. However, it has been reported that some patrons have not been as honorable as they should. This system does not seem to be an effective means of accurate operation and/or collection.
2) An unpaid volunteer could be sought who would agree to collect money at the trailhead. This individual would need to be trustworthy, as he would be handling large amounts of cash.
3) A paid volunteer could be sought to work on a commission basis. An example would be to pay the volunteer 10% of the daily gate fee generated from the ATV trails.
(Example: 50 riders X $5.00 gate fee = $250.00 X 10% = $25.00 for the day)
4) Another alternative could be to build an RV pad at the trailhead to accommodate a Park Host. Electricity is already available at the trailhead, but water and sewage is not. If the Park Host&39;s RV was water and sewer self-contained, they could periodically use the main camping area dump station and water facilities to dump and restock their RV tanks.
The city would pay for the Park Host&39;s water and electricity. The Park Host could be totally volunteer or they could be paid a commission as described above or other means.

Method of Trail Use Enforcement
Each rider would be affixed with a strong, numbered paper bracelet (utilized at Lake Murray) with its corresponding numbers written on the “Waiver of Liability” and in the user fee logbook. This bracelet could be used to identify any rider on the trail at any time using the corresponding numbers. This bracelet would be used to identify those riders who have, or do not have, permission to be on the trail. Any rider caught on the trail without their bracelet would be fined and/or banned from the park.

Trail Design
It is proposed that the trail be a long looping trail that has the following characteristics:
a) The trails should be long enough to convey a sense of adventure for the riders. Due to the heavily wooded feature of the proposed area, along with the fluctuating terrain, it may be possible to construct up to 20 miles of winding, slow riding trails.
b) The trails should observe a 150&39; buffer from any dwelling or roadway (excepting in areas where the trails must cross the road near cove 3).
c) The trail system should be laid out in a loop system, with loops that depart and return to the point of beginning. These trails should be a one-way system with consistent markings to direct riders, and to designate degrees of difficulty.
d) There should be widened areas along the trails to allow tired riders to rest.
e) The trails should offer several degrees of difficulty from beginner to advanced.
f) Access roads for emergency personnel may need to be implemented.
g) An occasional kiosk would be preferred to show riders where they are and how far they are from the trailhead.
h) A kiosk that maps the trails should also be placed at the trailhead.

Park Enforcement
Whether a Park Host or a volunteer is utilized in operating the trailhead, that person should have access to either a police radio or some type of two-way radio to contact the Lake Ranger. Cell phones are unreliable in the Sportsman Lake area.
In case of an emergency, the volunteer could contact the Lake Ranger and have him onsite in as little as a few minutes.

Site/Trail Care and Maintenance Practices
Objective:
The purpose of the Care and Maintenance Practices (CMP) is to aid in developing the facility in a manner so that it does not have an adverse effect on the environment within the Sportsman Lake area or the community surrounding it. Trail development is the key focus of this proposal, but proper Care and Maintenance Practices (CMP) are just as important in order to address erosion and environmental impact issues. The management group and trail participants must operate and use the facility in a manner that is in the best interest of the City of Seminole, park users, environment and the public in general.
Any type of trail use, whether it is ORVs, Equestrian or hiking trails, or other type of trail, erosion and environmental concerns will always be a concern. The best trail Care and Maintenance Practices (CMP) should always be used while operating any trail system.
The ORV users would be responsible for trail maintenance and repair.

Trail Layout
Trail location is the single most important factor in preventing erosion. The following information is an “outline” of dos and don&39;ts in trail construction.
· Locate trails in dry, well-drained areas. Avoid areas that remain constantly wet & muddy.
· Locate trails on the most stable soil available.
· Never use drains or ditches as trails.
· Locating trails on side slopes will allow sufficient water run-off.
· Locate the trail to minimize the removal of trees and shrubs. Vegetation is instrumental in strengthening soil structure and reducing erosion.
· Locate trails to offer the rider a multitude of experiences and provide access to significant features. Trail users will create their own trails to reach interesting areas. Properly constructed trails even through unstable areas provide far less erosion potential than rogue trails created by users attempting to reach a desirable location.
· Provide a vegetated buffer of sufficient width and density between the trails and other park users.
· Align the trail to provide variable grades.
· Locate the majority of the trail on slopes between 2 and 10% where possible.
· Align trails in a zigzag like manner to aid in water run-off and lessen erosion.
· Align the trails away from main water bodies by using vegetation as a buffer.
· Minimize the number of stream crossings.
· Locate stream crossings in areas with stable, firm banks.
· Never use streambeds as trails.
· Use the minimum trail width necessary for safe travel.
· Install cross-drain culverts as needed.
· Install drainage-dips at appropriate intervals along the trail system.
· Install turnouts/wing ditches as needed.
· Restore vegetation in bare soil areas susceptible to erosion.

Trail Construction Guidelines
There are many books outlining proper trail construction and maintenance. Mike Grant currently has possession of one of these books entitled, “Park Guidelines for Off-Highway Vehicles” written by George E. Fogg, 2002. This book is promoted and supported by the National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council (NOHVCC).
Other publications for reference are:
Hesselbarth, Woody and Brian Vachowski. Trail Construction and Maintenance Notebook, 2000 Edition. USDA Forest Service: Technology and Development Program, 2000.

Off-Highway Motorcycle & ORV Trails Guidelines for Design, Construction, Maintenance and User Satisfaction by Joe Wernex 2nd Edition / American Motorcyclists Association (AMA)

Costs and Funding
Costs for this project will be minimal. Most of the costs involved in constructing a trail system come through labor costs. As you have read in many of the support letters, and on the petitions, there are many volunteers who have committed to taking on the task of constructing and maintaining the trails with no cost to the city. Other user groups such as the OCCRA and NOHVCC have offered their experience and expertise in trail design and construction as well.
Since this proposal does not include any major buildings, fencing or other large ticket items, it would be reasonable to consider that any costs would be so minimal that private donations and user group funds could be raised to cover any costs.
Comparable Trail Systems
It has been an unsuccessful task to find any trails in Oklahoma that are comparable with what is being proposed for this project. Other trails are either larger or smaller in scale, different in terrain and/or managed completely different than what this proposal seeks. It is perceived that these differences give this project an advantage. Different is good. These differences will attract riders who are seeking new and different riding experiences.
Other trails, trail managers, City Managers and Park Managers have been contacted and surveyed in order to implement the best management system for this project. Information from other trails and trails managers aided in implementing this management system which will be referred to as S.U.C.C.E.S.S.:
a) Soundly profitable – Over 98% profitable
b) User friendly – Easy to read and understand signage.
c) Creative recreation - Provides a great riding experience for the rider.
d) Cost effective – Minimal startup costs.
e) Easy to manage – On-site manger operates the trails and reports revenue to the Lake Ranger.
f) Simple to maintain – Very low maintenance = litter control and erosion control
g) Self supporting – Ongoing revenue for the lake that would allow it to be totally self-sufficient.

Projected Revenue
Although there are no nearby trails that can be compared to this project, the information that has been gathered has offered some insight on what the Sportsman trails can expect.
Based on information gathered from Lake Murray&39;s Peach Orchard ORV trails, Prague Lake&39;s ORV trails and Stillwater&39;s Mud, Sweat and Gears trails, the following determination has been projected.
The Sportsman Lake trails can expect (calculating on the low side) an average of approximately 40 riders per day on Saturdays and Sundays and approximately 8 riders per day throughout the week.

52 weekends X 2 days = 104 weekend days X 40 riders = 4160 riders X $5.00 each = $20,800.00 per yr.
52 weeks X 5 weekdays = 260 weekdays X 8 riders = 2080 riders X $5.00 each = $16,640.00 per yr.
Estimating 25% of 4160 riders will camp at least one night = 1040 campers X 8.00 = $8,320.00
Total Projected Annual Revenue = $45,760.00

The above information does not consider holidays, 3 day weekends or vacation time for potential visitors. These extra days will increase the annual amount to a higher number.
This information also does not take into account how many extra boat permits will be generated from visitors who bring both their boat “and” their ORV. The added boat permits will also raise the annual revenue amount.

References Annual Revenue Areas in need of improvement
Stillwater&39;s Mud, Sweat and Gears = $13,000.00-$25,000.00 per yr. (No on-site Mgmnt., no camping)
Prague = Prague Lake Trails = approximately $35,000.00 per yr. (Unadvertised, non-looping trails)
Lake Murray&39;s Peach Orchard ORV = approx. $140,000.00 per yr. (Little advertisement, no signage)

Future Funding and Improvements
What will the trials look like in 5 years?
Grants from the Recreational Trails Program (RTP = 80/20 match) and Land and Water Conservation Program (LWCP = 50/50 match) will be pursued for future projects. The City or group responsible for the operation of the facility will need to apply, and compete for the grant funds against other facilities, cities and other public agencies.
In five years the trails are expected to still be open, making a profit and have the following amenities:
a) Bathhouse with pay showers.
b) Paved parking lot and park roads.
c) Future land acquisitions of adjacent properties, making the trail area larger.
d) Improved campsites with full RV hookups.
e) A guardhouse at the trailhead for the overseer.
The finished goal of this project is to make the Sportsman Lake trails a state-of-the-art facility that will attract thousands of visitors from across the country.

Adjacent Land and Noise Concerns
The adjacent lands to the proposed trail area are privately owned. The properties are covered with trees and underbrush, which is perfect for sound buffering and noise reduction. Due to the combination of the trees, underbrush and terrain, there should be no reduction in the quality of life, peacefulness of the lake or noise concerns to adjacent landowners or other park users.
A test was conducted at the Lake Murray, Peach Orchard ORV Park in which participants stood at the trailhead to observe noise levels. It was determined by 4 different participants that, even though there were 144 ORVs on the Peach Orchard trails at the time of this test, the noise level from the ORVs were absolute zero.
It is therefore conceivable that proper buffer zones and natural sound barriers are an effective means of noise reduction.
Noise Control
Proper baffles will be required on every ORV allowed at the Sportsman Lake trails. Regulations stipulate that ORV exhaust noise levels should not exceed 96 decibels. It is recommended that this regulation be strictly enforced at the Sportsman Lake ORV trails.
Proper buffer zones and the use of the natural resources (trees, underbrush, terrain) will be utilized in all areas of concern.

Riding Times
The City of Seminole authorities should stipulate riding times, but it is recommended that the hours available to ride be from dawn-til-dusk. Although there are variations (some parks are open 24 hours a day), the majority of ORV parks follow the dawn-til-dusk guideline.

Shared Trails
It is recognized that the equestrian riders are now attempting to secure the same property that this proposal seeks. Any equestrian rider will be welcomed and respected on these trails from the ORV (Off Road Vehicle) community. If any equestrian rider possesses a horse that is not comfortable around ORVs, they could still have an enjoyable riding experience utilizing the already existing 18 miles of equestrian trails. The ORV community has “no desire” to use the existing equestrian trails and would respect their privacy and their right to ride uninhibited.
It is also recognized that the equestrian riders are seeking this property to extend their trails in order to secure three major sanctioned events each year for their riding association. The ORV community respects their desire to hold these sanctioned events and offer the following:
During these three sanctioned equestrian events, the trails would be shut down to ORVs. The equestrian riders would be allowed full use of ALL the trail systems during their sanctioned events. This would allow the equestrian riders the opportunity to hold their events completely inclusive with no distractions.
The ORV community would also like to host sanctioned events and request the trails be closed off to equestrian riding during their events as well.
During the rest of the year the trails would be open to ORVs and equestrians alike. Allowing hikers, joggers and bicyclists on the trails would be determined by the Lake Board and City Council.
Economic Impact
Aside from the projected $45,760.00 from fees collected for the ORV trail system and camping, there are other economic factors that will impact this community. Here are some examples:
a) Tourism dollars – Visitors to the community would be spending tens of thousands of dollars per year in places throughout the community such as motels, restaurants, fueling stations, grocery stores, etc…
b) Sanctioned events – There are organizations like the OCCRA who have over 500 local members and have offered to hold sanctioned ORV events at the Sportsman Trails. These events draw hundreds of visitors and participants who will not only be paying trail and camping fees, but spending thousands of dollars into the local economy as mentioned above. One report from an OCCRA member stated that each event generates between $14,000.00 - $21,000.00 per weekend into the local economy.
c) Potential new businesses – With a nearby ORV trail, it is a strong temptation for entrepreneurs to open an ORV dealership, along with a parts and service department. With the average ORV costing in the neighborhood of $6,000.00, an ORV dealership would generate thousands of dollars in tax revenue.

In conclusion
ORVing is the fastest growing family oriented sport in America today. The ORV community consists mostly of families who have found an enjoyable way to spend time together. Since it is a sport for all ages, everyone can enjoy a weekend spent exploring nature&39;s beauty.
Most ORVers are responsible riders who respect the environment and the enjoyment of others. They are lawyers, business owners, custodians, police officers, wives, husbands, children, grandparents, etc… ORVers are your neighbors next door and your friends across town. They are people just like you who are looking for a place to spend time with their family and friends. Sportsman Lake is a great area where this family time can take place.
The ORV community appreciates your time and consideration and hope you realize what a wonderful opportunity you could provide for your community and its citizens.

who all is going to make the meeting?

so far, the river is looking good

Posted by: TyShark9

I'll be there. Are we going to cook again? I'll bring whatever we need. Meat, buns, chips, drinks.

Tyler

Posted by: trailride

I myself would like to cook out again.

Mike, You still have that big package of meat still ?

We should be there about 2:30 on saturday

Brent

Posted by: Brink74868

I plan to be there between 2:30 and 4:00. As a new guy, I guess I should bring something. I can bring drinks (pop, water & whatever else needed) or anything else needed. Just let me know. Jason.

p.s. I'll be the guy who looks lost in the red Avalanche with a couple of Yamaha's.

Posted by: Bobman

Brent...

we can cook out again if you bring Shane to cook...and that cool cooker you had last time.

I think Mike is Bringing the meat, I will handle Buns, Cheese, ketchup, Mustard, Mayo, pickles., and I will also bring some "Supplemental meat" (i.e. hot dogs) in case we run out of burgers.

Bob "This looks to be a large turnout" Bobman

Ginny and I will be there about 12Pm or 1Pm. Depending on when we get out of here. It should take about 3 hours to get there. WE are looking forward to meeting you guys. What do you need us to bring? ( and don't say lobsters and crabs as we have NONE in Texas.) We can bring some hamburgers, or bar b que. Let us know.

Posted by: Bobman

Gordon,

I will not get off work until 4:00 and will not get down there until 5:00 PM. I hope that there will be someone there to meet you all and welcome you (HINT HINT HINT to other members). I should be down there about 5:00. I probably will not be on my quad as I would have to drive back home and trailer up and then backtrack again so I think I will just come down there with the Lawn Chair and the BS meter. I will probably bring the canopy as well since I won't be riding I will have time to put that up. I look forward to seeing everyone.

Bob

Bob,

Can you not trailer it to work & leave from there?

Just a thought..

Jason "I have an Idea" Brinker

Posted by: gsettle081

Bob
Don't worry about us! With the directions we have and the wife I have, we will ride until you guys get there. That was a good idea about bringing your quad to work. Just run some cable around the quad to the trailer, and lock it up. Park next to a building so no one can steal it. Knock off a little early and head out.
See you whenever you get there. Also, Let us know what you want us to bring!!

Posted by: Jamesh921

The wife and I will be there. Not sure exactly what time yet, probably around 2 or 3. I'll be driving a red, four-door Ford pickup with my blonde wife on the seat-cover and no quad in the back. We'll be pretty easy to spot since we'll look way out of place.

I'm not sure what we'll bring yet, but we'll certainly chip in on some food stuff.

James

Posted by: Bobman

Brink,

I could do that but I would be too nervous that folks were out ther harvesting parts and stuff. It's no big deal I enjoy the company and goofing off as much as I do riding. If it were going to be a multi-day ride that would be different. But as it is I would only have 2 hours or so to ride, so its not worht the hassle.

Bob "have Cryptonite Cable..." Bobman

Posted by: Brink74868

I will try to bring my wife's Kodiak also. I may also have a friend from Earlsboro come & bring his Polaris 400. Whatever happens, I will see everyone there. Once again, If I need to bring chips (not Ponch & John, but potato) I can do that on top of drinks. I will probably bring Pepsi & water unless there are any requests. My ice chest will hold a couple of cases if anyone needs to cool theirs off.

Until next time,

Jason "have cooler, will travel" Brinker

Bob
If you are nice, you can ride our Honda or Bombardier. Take James and show him ropes. ( or River as the case may be)

Posted by: Bobman

Brink,

Pepsi is great as far as I am concerned.

Gordon, I will be busy enough talking to everyone and meeting new people. I will enjoy myself. But I truly thank you for the offer.

I'll try, but last time we didn't eat but maybe 20 burgers max.

No need for "chipping in"...My only price, is somebody else has to cook me one. I'll set myself on fire if somebody gives me the tongs.

......Oh yeah, somebody might want to remember to bring those this time...Or at least a spatula. BR>

P.S. Did you get those pics Gs?

Yes, I will print them on NICE paper next week after the remodel is complete. They are really cool. Are you a pro photgrapher, or just good at taking pictures. We probably need pictures on Saturday.

Posted by: nukeim

I wish I was a pro...I might be able to justify a better camera (the one I took those pics with is being a brat lately). Thanks for the complement though.Check bearafs profile pics, I got a couple decent ones of him this summer.

I also need to get off my a$$, and set up a site for pics I have taken on past rides...I got some great ones at the last meeting when everyone was riding the kneeboard.

Camera will be there this weekend though. We need to get a pic with everyone and their quads this time...Because that's what clubs do....right?

Charlie,

Good to see you back, How was Colorado? We were supposed to go next Month but I wrecked my truck and that took all my money (and time off work) so I won't be making it to Colorado anytime in the near future. But anyway, glad to see you back. If you still have your club directory you might look up Ronnie and Raymond. I think they frequent Little Sahara more than most of the others in the club. I heard Sandfest gets pretty crowded...so that lets me out..hehehehe. I hope you can make the meeting on 8/28/2004. We would like to see ya again.

I went to sand fest last year. In a few short sentences, let me sum it all up.

1. If you like rag races, this is the time and place. There are more soupe up Banshees than you can shake a stick at.

2. If you are needing a hotel room, book now if it's not too late (as you know, Waynoka doesn't exactly have what we call an overabundance of suites available).

3. If you like to see some cool crashes and the neat sandrail ambulance, this is your weeekend.

4. If you like young, half naked women flashing their hoo ha's, then this is also a good time to head northwest. It kind of reminded me of spring break at South Padre. The best place to see these exhibitions is around the parking area's.

Last month, the road to the North entrance is cabled off, thus cutting the parking along that road almost in half.

Overall, it was a bit crowded, but I had a very good time. That being my first Sandfest, I naively wanted to take my young 'ens and spousal unit with me, but was outvoted by the love of my life and had to consequently go with friends and have fun.

Once again, I look forward to Saturday.

We had a good time. It rained almost everyday at high altitudes causing us to use rain gear a lot. Rode about 800 miles of rocks. If anyone is going to Colorado, I would recommend the Buena Vista area. It has more trails than any other area that I have found. Hope to see all Sat.

Charlie,
My wife and I went on vacation to Beuna Vista last summer and had a BLAST! Although we didn't do any ATVing (we tried, but every rental place in town was totally out of ATVs for the whole week), we still had a great time.
Our main goal was to go white water rafting, which we did, and it was FANTASTIC!! It was our first time and we took the ride down the "Guantlett". The Guantlett has many Class III and Class IV rapids and even has one Class IV. It was a great time and we're looking forward to going back, but this time, we'll reserve the ATVs beforehand.

Since we couldn't get any ATVs to ride, we decided to drive up into the mountians in our 2-wheel drive truck. I tell ya, we took that puppy into some places that some 4-wheelers would be hesitant to go. Even drove to the top of one mountain to explore and old mine. We passed a 4-wheel drive jeep on the way up whose occupants elected to stop and "walk" the rest of the way up. HA!! If I'm on vacation I ain't walkin' unless I WANT to walk - otherwise referred to as hiking.

Anyway, I could go on-and-on about Buena Vista. It was a great place to vacation and I agree that everyone should visit there at least once.

Having some fun
YOU BET it is on for this weekend. Ginny and I will be up there as soon as we can get going. Should be around noon or 1Pm. I think everyone is coming that afternoon. I guess the "meeting" is set for 6:30PM??? Don't know for sure as we have never been to a "meeting"

Posted by: Bobman

Charlie....

Buena Vista is EXACTLY where we were going. We had reservations at the motel and everything but scheduling and funding just didn't work this time. But Keith did get the trails book from them so we can really go anytime we get the funds and time off work. I would like to go but it just wasn't the time for us this time....say that 3 times in a hurry.

Kevin....

You have arisen from the dead. We want to see you there Saturday. 'nuff said

Yes I am back and yes I will be there saturday for a few hours. I should get there around 1 or so and Stay as long as I can. Looking forward to seeing everyone again.
I dont have the white Dodge anymore. I will be in a red quad cab dodge this time around.

Also, Did someone mention food? cooking out?

Posted by: Brink74868

Is there electricity anywhere near where we will be set up? I was thinking of bringing the Ice cream maker for some homemade ice cream. if not, I guess I could bring a small generator. How does that sound?

Jason

Posted by: Bobman

Jason,

You better bring a generator. No power outlet anywhere near there. Too bad you don't have one of the old style crankers...

I'll bring a grill and an extention cord! I will also bring some drinks, and ice, and whatever else you guys need.

I think we have the grill covered gsettle, but we do need to make sure that we have everything covered...So, I guess I'll start a list.

Feel free to add/subtract from this anyone.

-1- Meat - I've got the burgers covered, and Bob said he's bringing some hotdogs...If anyone wants chicken/steak, they must bring their own.

-B- Bob says he has the condiments.

-III- Most people tend to bring their own beverages, I know I'll have water, cokes, and probably a little beer.

-4- Shane has the grill covered.

-E- Utinsels?

-VI- Chips, Salsa?

I just wanted to say "Salsa"....It's almost as fun to say as "hoopy frood", but easier to work into a conversation.

I may need a lift...

Hey guys my truck is still in the shop. Right now I am borrowing my parent's mini-van. I do not want to drive it down onto the river as it has little ground clearance and while I know it would make it, I do not want to get sand all over the inside and the outside and listen to them rag on that for the rest of eternity (ask Keith, my dad can rag on one issue for 20 years and not tire in the least). So I may need to have someone pick me up at the depot and take me down to the river in their truck. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Well guys its looking like I won't be able to make it Sat. I'm supposed to umpire a softball touney this weekend. The only hope I have is that it is supposed to rain Sat around the city so it may be called off then I will be there.

I am planning on going to Sandfest this year since I haven't been before. Any takers let me know. I'm considering taking the Friday of it off so I can go down on Thursday after work to get a camping spot. It sounds like a party so I think I should be there!

Hey everyone........

I will be down at the river approximately 4:45 PM. I will need someone to come grab me at the depot as the mini van will not make it. I was looking at the POS today and it has ZERO ground clearance. I will need to hitcha ride in a truck as I have a few items to haul down to the river (Ice chest, chair, canopy, buns, etc). Someone else is gonna have to bring the firewood (if anyone wants to have a fire after dark).

MIke....I may try it....I too have seen cars down there many times...I will have to decide.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Just a quick reminder that the August meeting is to be held one week from today on Saturday, August 28, 2004, on the S. Canadian River at Purcell. The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 PM so that there will be adequate time for riding before and after. There will be driving directions at the bottom of this correspondence.

One quick note for all of the new members from Seminole. A lot of the club activities are discussed on the ATVConnection.com Forums. If you are looking for a riding buddy this is a great place to post your ride info. If you would like to sign up for a user name but aren't quite sure how to go about it please let me know and I will assist you as best I can.

You simply need to go to WWW.ATVCONNECTION.COM and click "forums" on the left hand margin. You then see many items, click on the one labled "Club News and Events," and then you will see the Central Oklahoma ATV Club listed there among the subjects, usually towards the top (Meaning it was the subject most recently replied to). You can read posts all day long without without creating a user name, but to reply you must create a user name. Also...you might want to click on "Last" so that you do not have to read through the 70 someodd pages of posts. I look forward to seeing many of the new members on the forums.

To access the meeting site on the river I am going to give you the following directions. If you are coming from Seminole I am assuming you are coming from the east on Hiway 39. You will go through Konawa, Asher, Wanette and Lexington. From Lexington you will continue across the bridge into Purcell (There may be delays due to construction). Immediately after you cross the bridge continue going west one block. and then turn left (South) and go one block south to MAIN St. Turn left (East) on Main street and continue East on Main street until it dead ends at the bottom of a steep hill. Immediately in front of you, you will see the AMTRAK depot.

Here you have two choices. On your immediate left you will see an old red brick, warehouse, if you wish to park here and ride to the river you may do so. If you choose this option please park NORTH of the warehouse. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU PARK AT THE AMTRAK DEPOT. We enjoy a rather tenuous relation with the railroad and we do not want to strain this. To reach the river follow the directions below.

If you opt to drive/park on the river you will turn right (South) at the depot and continue approximately 1/4 to 1/2 half mile south and then turn left to cross the tracks. You will then turn left again and proceed north for approximately a mile (give or take). You will go through two low spots. You will also see two places where you can turn back east on the trail system. DO NOT TAKE EITHER OF THESE TURNOFFS. You will continue North until you see a small yellow sign on the left hand side of the road which says "P-65" this is a railroad signal sign or something. You will go about 30 yards past this sign and then turn right, you will drive about 20 - 30 yards and then you will see the river bed...YOU HAVE ARRIVED.

Since there are many new people arriving, we will try to have someone there at the depot to show you the way to the river, but if no one is there, the above listed directions should get you there. If you have any questions please feel free to jot down my cell number (405) 550-6168 and give me a call. I hope to see all of you there.

Bob

P.S. It may seem redundant but I will send this same correspondence again as a reminder on Friday, August 27, 2004

I will be late tomorrow. I just got done working on the quad and the breaks are not working at all. I have tried everything I can think of to fix them, but no luck. I am going to try to take it to a shop and get them to fix them for me. Hopefully I will make it tomorrow.

Also. did anyone catch the weather.. supposed to be 80% chance of rain tomorrow and 60% chance tonight. I will be there even if it does rain, so hopefully I will see all of you there.

Tyler

Posted by: bearaf

I think the rain is supposed to be done by noon, and the rain shouldn't be that far south, at least the last weather I saw earlier today.

Posted by: Bobman

yes I agree with Aaron...I think that the rain will push off north and east of purcell.

Bob

Got Beer? Oh yea its not Sat yet.....Now it is

Posted by: TyShark9

looks like it is pretty nice outside, so I am about to go find a shop and let them fix my breaks. Then i am going to the river. see you guys later.

Tyler

Posted by: TyShark9

Well. Not going to be able to ride for about a week now. My rear break master cylinder is out. I took it off and there is a leak in the bottom seal. It is pumping air into the lines, and thats why there is no breaks so I ordered another one for the quad, and it cost a 100 smack-a-roos. well, anyways, I'll be riding next weekend if anyone wants to go. I have been thinking about going to a track to ride, so if ayone wants to go to a track, let me know. If there are no takers, I'll be at the river all day next Friday or Saturday. see you guys later.

Wow...we had a great turnout. I think it was the best turnout we have ever had, even more than the Prague ride a while back.

For those of you who couldn't make it, you really missed out on a great time. There were around 30 people there, we cooked and talked and rode and planned (at least partially) a trip to SE. Oklahoma riding out of Rattan and Cloudy. If you are interested please let us know. The ride will be sometime in September...if you want to let us know...the way we will determine the dates is to have all interested parties submit the dates that they CAN NOT go and we can try to pair it down from there.

I appologize in advance because I KNOW I will miss or skip or forget SOMEONE...and for that I appologize..but I am going to TRY and list all of those who attended the meeting...lets see how I did.

Bob,

The friends were my wife's ex-husband, Brian and his wife, Katie. The oldest young 'en was Brian Dale (he was riding his white extreme 50). The little 'en riding with Missy was Trevor (aka Meathead).

I learned a few things yesterday so I will try to reflect on them now. Not necessarily in this order:

1. I should not try to compete with Braum's, because I'm not very good at making Ice Cream.

2. I should ALMOST always listen to my wife (she was wrong about bringing an extra pair of shorts!)

3. I am NOT a river boat captain.

4. Grizzly's do NOT float!!

5. A special thanks to Gordon: I learned how to successfully resize a picture.

As far as riding in S.E. OK, Missy and I probably can ride next weekend. After that, I will probably have to work every Friday and Saturday night. (what a weekend killer!!)

We had an absolute blast!! We really appreciate everyone's hospitality & I especially thank my new pit crew (without whom I wouldn't have gotten the beast dried out in time to save it's life)

Once again, Thanks to everyone for making for an incredible day!!

Jason,

I too have considered some mooifications to my mechanized beast of burden. That being said (I seem to use that phrase a lot these days) I would like to inquire a little about your two latest modifications. As for the trolling motor, how many pounds thrust did you opt for and did you go with Minnkota or Eagle? Did you retain the traditional tiller steering mechanism or did you upgrade to one of the newer foot level designs? And on that bilge pump, how many GPH are you getting and did you go with the trusty old Rule or use an Atwood? Just curious as I may be seeking to add similar after market equipment to my Suzuki. Oh yes...I see that you have a Yamaha, will I need any kind of adapters for a Minnkota bow mount?

Bob "Always eager to learn" Bobman

Posted by: Brink74868

Bob,

After much field testing, I found the battery on the Grizz to be insufficient for proper navigation. I think that even with a 500W generator, the old troller wouldn't be enough. I have even considered a Mercury 150 outboard, but have come to the conclusion that it would be like trying to push a house foundation over water with an oscillating fan. Floatation is the key. I am considering an attempt at installing air bags or pontoons.

As for the bilge pump, I have also seeked a refund. I made a startling discovery yesterday. This particular vessel has been equipped with a number of drain plugs (I believe we found a dozen or so yesterday that release somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 gallons of river water). These seem to serve their purpose for the mentally challenged operators that use their machines for a submarine.

I will keep you posted on the progress of the floatation devices.

Ok guys, Ginny and I crossed back into Texas today about 3PM. We had a BLAST. You guys were fun to hang out with and we are looking forward to the next ride. All the weekends look ok now for September. I think we should schedule the ride/meeting as soon as possible to let people plan their schedules. If we could ride the last Saturday of the month, it would work well for us at least.
Some notes and observations
1. You guys are lucky to have Purcell to ride.
2. Let's consider moving down river toward Ada
3. Maybe have a ride at Lake Murray
4. Chip in some money for the hamburgers. They were great. The hotlinks were worth the trip.

Our side trip to Lake Murray was pretty good. We met another Texan there form Pilot Point. He will make the SE Oklahoma trip for sure.

JAMES would have died with what we saw at Lake Murray. He needs to look at Lake Murray for a positive impact on what ATVS can do for an area. They had cabins, restaurants, stores, ATVs., horses, boats, boat and RV storage, RV rentals, platoon boats, wave runners, minature golf, real golf, a nice swimming pool, etc etc etc. It was amazing what an area can have to improve their way of life.
I never knew Lake Murray was so nice
See you guys next month

PS...Jason, I did not see your red and green running lights on your wave sinker. You might get that fixed before you venture into other waters. IN Texas, They will give you a ticket for no running lights.
Gordon

Posted by: Bobman

Gordon...

Much as we would like to, the ATV Community can not claim to be revenue generating source for the attractions and benefits that have been made to Lake Murray....Lake Murray has been one of the premiere lake resort communities in Oklahoma long before ATV's ever crossed the terrain. BUt maybe we can make them believe that it was all due to ATV's....Hahahaha

First meeting I miss, turns out to be the best. I hate my Quad

Tyler

Posted by: Brink74868

Gordon,

Thanks for the heads up on the lights. Missy will be thrilled that there is yet another modification that I can make to the ol' Griz. I have given it much thought and have decided that I must first devise some form of floatation device that won't affect handling, but will keep the heavy front end from donig a nose dive when facing deep pools of water before affixing the required lights. I am also working on blueprints for a depth finder remote sending unit so I will never have to guess at the depth of the water before diving in again. I am considering writing to the good folks at Lowrance and Hummingbird to see if they can help with my latest venture. I think that I could make a fortune if I could get with the local shops who have repaired others U-Boats for a marketing list.

On a more serious note, I put a few miles on it today and everything seems to be A-OK (no water in the oil, engine and electronics seem to be working fine).
I was riding in a dried up creek bed today and ventured into a seemingly shallow pool and almost had a repeat of yesterday! BR>This is when I decided to either stay completely away from any body of water that is bigger than a foot in diameter, or outfit my quad with scuba gear, floaties, and goggles.

If at all possible, can we ride in a desert next time?

Jason "oh no, not again" Brinker

Posted by: Jamesh921

Guys,
My wife and I had the absolute BEST time riding and hanging with you guys. I just wish I woulda had more time to stick around. NEXT TIME - I will!!

I really appreciate all those who let my wife and I ride their quads. I haven't had that much fun in quite a long time. Even better, my wife enjoyed it too. I ain't sayin' she's hooked yet, but she really had a good time and it meant allot to me that you guys were willing to share your "toys" with us.

GORDON,
I've been to Lake Murray and you're absolutely right. My wife and I spent the day down there back in July. We drove completely around the lake and visited every cove, the lodge, the Tucker Tower, saw the cabins, etc. We saw all the ammeneties and attractions they offer, took pictures and I was frothing at the mouth - thinking - we could have this kind of lake in our back yard if only our City Councilmen had the slightest hint of vision.

Some other ammenities they offered were lighted tennis courts, a basketball court, a full resort complete with restaurant, frisbee golf, mini golf, kayaks, paddle boats, canoes, sailboats, sunset dinner cruise, floating villa rentals and so much other stuff too numerous to mention. The visitors to the Lake Murray area have really got it made.

BOBMAN,
I spent over 2 hours with the Park Host who runs the ATV trails at Lake Murray "and" I spoke with the Park Director Bryce (I can't remember his last name. I think it is Hill). Both of these folks said that the ATV trails "are the only thing that keeps Lake Murray operating in the black during the winter months" and "these trails are the best investment we ever made".
So, while the ATVers can't take full credit for Lake Murray's success, they certainly have ALLOT to do with it.

Once again, we really had a great time with you guys. Looking forward to doing it again. Maybe next time I'll be bringing my "own" quad. BR>
James

Posted by: Bobman

James,

Actually what I was referring to were the private enterprises that exist as a result of the lake's tourism in general. While the ATV trails serve as a source of revenue for the State Park, I was referring to the extensive tourism based economy that pre dated the trails...Sorry I didn't adequately point that out earlier...my bad. I am sure that the trails are indeed a great boon to the state park but as much as I hate to admit it, the tourism dollars of boaters, campers and fisherman are most likely what fuel the fires of the hotels, motels, restaurants, service industry and concessionaires present in the Lake Murray area.

Bob

Posted by: gsettle081

Bob and James
That was my point. ATVs are just one component in a sucessful area. That is what I don't understand about Seminole. They think the horses are going to solve all their problems. NOT Going To Happen! They even have a boat manufacturer there. Anyway... I 'm not going to worry about it anymore.

Now to better things...
Jason is on to something with the depth finder. Add that to a GPS unit and people would know how deep a pond or stream was, and where the deep spots were. When we were following you guys, I was not sure how deep the river was when we crossed. If you had a depth finder, it could be used to determine if a quad would make it across without having to wade out in the middle or just "go for it" as Jason did. IF you get way behind the group an did not know how they twisted and turned, you might sink and be left behind. THAT REALLY IS A GOOD IDEA!!!

SUNDAY SEPT 5,

We are planning a "Ride with the kids" ride this day at Rivermist/99 Hwy . Everyone is welcome this would be a good time to bring the kids and show them the river. I plan to start about 1:00 sunday from under the bridge. If we want to cook dogs on the grill tell me so we can plan for it.

Brent,

Which day is "this day"? Sat or Sun would be good. We will probably come this weekend. I have to start back working next Monday I will have the next two weekends off and then my weekends will be shot for awhile.

After the weekend of the 11th, Saturday and maybe Sunday rides will be shot so I'm game for S.E. OK in the very near future.

Jason

Posted by: Brink74868

OOPS!!!

You shouldn't put it in such big letters. BR>Maybe I should just quit while I'm ahead!

Brent, count me & Missy in. There's a quick stop on the hill that would be easier than cooking, but I will be glad to chip in if we decide to cook. I'd personally rather spend the time riding, but am very flexible (float, sink, ride, crash). Whatever the plan, count us in!!

Brent,
We should be down at the river on Sunday and Monday. This is County Fair Week. This is the only night that I will be home before 10 pm the rest of the week. The fair should end about Midnight Sat. Sounds like you guys had a good time last Saturday. We were grooming animals, getting ready for this week. This is a very busy time for me. That's the life of an Agriculture teacher. It is County Fair and State Fair time=lots of long days and late nights. You gotta love it though. My students have so much enthusiasm right now.

The river is really going down right now. Just hope it doesn't rain this week. There is still some deep pockets around.

Jason,
I saw a Yamaha Bruin go down the river upside down last week. All you could see was 4 tires pointing up at the sky. I have drowned my Grizzly before. Just service them and go again. That's the life on the river. We drowned 9 out of 17 a week ago. We went and tried to go through things we shouldn't have.

Gotta to love a day on the river!!!!

I think we will just cook hot dogs . Cheap, easy, and the kids love them. I had the kneeboard last meeting, but we didnt have a chance to ride. We will have it again this time and I would love to see everyone except the kids try it. Most of the river will be too deep for the little quads, but after we get back to the trucks we can unload them and let them ride while we cook the dogs.

Hey guys....

Everyone please submit the dates that ARE NOT going to work for them as far as the SE oklahoma ride goes.

The date I am 100% required to be at work or get fired is September 12. As I work for Directv, opening day of NFL is very important to them so that is a manditory day. Unfortuately Jason, of Jason and MissyB fame, has that as the only weekend he can go.

Everyone please submit the dates that DO NOT work for you.

Thanks,

Bob

Posted by: trailride

Any weekend will work for me. I just need a week in advance notice so i can take some vacation before and after the ride. Is anyone else planning on riding with us this weekend ?

Brent

Posted by: gsettle081

Any weekend is good for Ginny and I. You guys decide.

Brent
We are riding this weekend either Sunday or Monday, BUT on the Texas side of the Red River.

Posted by: Bobman

As of tomorrow I will be able to know what my future holds. I will find out tomorrow if I get my new (and better) job and if so when it starts. Once I learn this I can have some knowledge of what dates I can get away.

Bob

Posted by: Brink74868

Bob,

I may have the scheduling thing worked out. Waiting to hear from my chief. will probably know mid week.

Brent,

It may just be 3 families, but we will still have fun!! I think I have the floatie thing worked out.

See everyone? at the river Sunday

I can't ride this weekend, I have to go to Dallas and haul off a bunch of crap for my mom.

But I can do any weekend in Sept....'Cause I'm cool like that.

On another note, my beef hookup has dried up, so no more free burger rides

Posted by: Bobman

I am sure you all know this already....especially Ronnie and Raymond, but Sandfest is the weekend of Sept 10-13. The only reason I post it is because at the meeting Aaron wasnt sure what day it was...so now we all know.

Bob "Even if I had the days off....too crowded for me" Bobman

Anybody want to ride today? Morning, afternoon, Draper, Purcell, or wherever...I'm not picky.

Posted by: lvthoutdrs

I (along with my 2 sons) will be going to L.S. early Sunday morning for the day. I have room for one more quad and passenger if anyone would like to go. I will be leaving the Newcastle area about 7:00 am and returning early evening. If you need a ride, call 405-392-2496.

Charlie

Bob,
I am usually pretty busy on the weekends. I will be watching the forum for the date of the S.E. Okla. trip. I would like to go with you guys. After you set a date, I will schedule it on my calendar and hopefully can attend.

Posted by: bearaf

Mike,

I see, just had to rub in the fact school has started back up

Posted by: Spudss

I will be leaving for Little Sahara on Friday the 10th....I cant wait to hit the sand...Who all from COAC is going to Sand Fest???? I can meet some of the members if you are going....Let me know if your going and were you are camping out at....I think we will settle for Sand Rat..Because you can make reservations in advance....

Posted by: bearaf

Hey Spudss, where's sand rat? My buddy and I will be heading there friday afternoon and will need a camping spot. Never been to sandfest before but heard it is packed. Will we be able to find a camping spot friday evening? We're talking one truck and a tent, or a tent in the back of a truck!

Aaron

Posted by: Bobman

Well as of right now...it looks as though I will not be able to go to SE Oklahoma ANY weekend in September. As of right now...I am scheduled to work every weekend throughout Septemeber. So it looks like you all will have to make this one with out me.

Bob "I urge you all to call my boss and call his wife bad names" Bobman

Aaron,

Sand Rat Haven is by the North camp road.. take the highway to where you would turn to go to the north camp and Sand Rat entrance is about 20 feet before the road to the north camp...There # is (580)824-0849 I like to stay there on big weekend because you can make reservations in advance...Tell them you want around the Dog Bowl... That is a good out of the way spot... Plus at night when you are trying to sleep you are farther away from the noise when camping at sand rat...We should be getting there around 8-9pm hopefully earlier...

Is anyone going to ride today (Sunday)? I fixed my breaks the other day, and was thinking about riding sometime this weekend. Just wanted to see if anyone wanted to ride with me. c-ya

Tyler

Posted by: gsettle081

NOT today....BUT Monday we will be in Muenster,TEXAS about noon. You are welcome to join us. Red F150 Ford Pickup with two quad trailer. ONE loads form the side and one from the rear. Come on down. It is only about an hour and a half from Norman. Good riding area.

Posted by: Brink74868

Tyler,

Brent, Ronnie, and I are going to meet under the bridge at rivermist. I think we're kicking off the festivities around 1:00 or so. It's between Seminole and Ada on Hwy 99 about 1/2 south of Hwy 56/39. I will have my cell phone in the truck (the only way possible to get some kind of usable signal is in the car kit) if you need to call. My number is (405) 584-0921. Leave a message & I'll know you called.

Jason

Posted by: gsettle081

By the way Tyler....
Bring a ROPE!!! Jason is into scuba diving with a four wheeler. He may need help with his anchor, or new attachments. He is trying to improve the ATVs on the market by adding water features, like pontoons, running lighs, trout lines, diving platforms, and scuba attachments. He has a pretty good idea, but is still in the design arena. Any imput you have will greatly improve his success. He is dong his field test in the River. Your help is needed. Let us know what you think of his attempts so far. At the recent meeting Jason was voted "most likely to sink"

Posted by: Brink74868

Thanks Gordon.

Let me know what you think of Muenster. My cousin told me of it's existence, but he has never ridden there.

I think I'm just going to test some different floatation devices today. Anything to keep the breather out of the water will do fine.

Brink
I can tell you EVERYTHING you want to know about Muenster. That is our main riding place. We have been 11 times since March. 3500 acres of the following:
1. Sand ( a good area to play)
2. Trails ( from easy to scarry, rolling to climbing, rocks to wide open)
3. Creek about 2 miles long. (Creek changes with each rain. ONE quicksand pit that ALWAYS have kids stuck needing to be pulled out. Then they appreciate old men like me with a winch)
4. Red River access when the rain has not filled the Red River (about 5 miles from one end to the other in the Red River. Good hard packed sand. Kind of like where we were drag racing on the Canadian.)
5. Roads ( gravel to dirt)
6. Camping areas ($10 per site-- Has a 10X20 cover like a pole barn)
7. Pastures with Jumps
8. Rock climbs

Muenster is about 15 miles away. Bring, drinks, water, food, air tanks, supplies, etc as there is NOTHING but trails when you get there. We always stop in Muenster and get food and snacks. They have Trail bologna as good as Mikes. NOT crowded as there is so much area to ride you never run in to anyone, except in passing. The lady that owns the land is a dirt bike enthusiast. She loves us and wants a family atmosphere.
Cost is $8 per person. Well worth the money.

Come up 35 and cross into Texas
Have you passport handy as we will check
Go to Gainesville
Go west on Hwy 82 to Muenster
Turn RIGHT at the light ( only light in town)
Go north about 15 miles
Red River Trails is on the right.

There may be a way from a little town in Oklahoma you can cross the Red River from, But Idon't know the name of the town.
Call and we can hook up.

wel, thanks for the invite, but I think I am going to ride close to the house today. Going to go to purcell, it's only 15 min form me. I'll be there around 3 or 3:30, so if anyone is bored and wants to ride, I'll be there. I got a guy coming to look at my quad tomorrow, so this might be the last day I have it BR>

Well guys how did the riding go? Anyone have any great adventures or tales to tell???

Bob

Posted by: Brink74868

Bob,

That's kind of a sore subject with me today. I broke ANOTHER axle on the grizzly. This time, I rode off of a 3 inch former river channel and heard it pop. I was going between 10 & 15 M.P.H. I plan to raise hell all the way to Mr Yamaha if I can find him. I had to wing it back in 4WD. I almost had a reoccurance in a deep spot and began having flashbacks. We only officially sank ane quad so it wasn't that bad. There were 10 quads and a lot of happy children, so it was a success.

Shane and I came to a startling conclusion today. Of the 1100 miles I have riden my Grizzly, I have only had 3 mishaps. I have broken both rear axles and attempted to drown it once. There were only 3 common denominators. Me, Shane, and sand. I can't be the bad luck charm because of the other 1050 miles or so. I have been on or near sand several times with no problems. I can't place it, but I'm forgetting the punch line.... Me, sand........ It's a good thing that I'm not superstitious.

All in all, A great day!!

Jason "what else can I break?" Brinker

Posted by: HavinSomeFun

Brink,
you dont have to feel so bad. A friend of mine drowned his grizz today at Purcell also. Matter of fact he also broke a front CV joint today. Something about grizzleys and sand. I had to pull him back about 3 miles to get tools and get it going again.
Other than that met some really nice people from Purcell and rode until about 10:30pm

Kevin

Posted by: ZillaRider02

We went to the river yesterday. Had a good time, I think we met HavinSomeFun. My mom's P700 is having belt issues and he was a big help. Might go back today........

Posted by: HavinSomeFun

Yep, that was me trying to fix your moms P700. Sorry I couldnt get it goin.

Kevin

Posted by: ZillaRider02

Kevin, I did some more research on that problem today. The battery on the P700 is toast, you have to use the pull rope 90% of the time to start it. I have learned that low voltage will cause the deflection switch to not reset. We will try it with a new battery and it should work. BTW, thanks again for the help...

Posted by: HavinSomeFun

Didnt even think about the dead battery. I knew that and just completly blanked.
It was nice to meet you and your family, perhaps we will run into each other again at the river.

Kevin

Posted by: Brink74868

Kevin,

How did you get the Griz running? I know from experience that this will be about a $250.00 trip to Sehorn tomorrow. How do you "fix" a CV joint??

Brent suggested "Gorilla Axles", but I have never changed a Grizzly CV joint (or any CV joint for that matter). Is there something less complicated than brain surgery, or should I just lick my wounds (again) and pony up the dough to Sehorn??

Any help is appreciated.

Jason "there must be an easier way" Brinker

Posted by: Bobman

Jason...here is what I usually do....

I take my machine into the shop, have them do the labor and then about two days before it is time to pick it up I get my handy carboard sign that says "Homeless children need your help" and take to the nearest exit off I-35 and collect the fees in a couple of days.

Bob "Just a suggestion" Bobman

Posted by: nukeim

Jason, if you have a book and the parts. Bring it over, and we can do it at my house.

If you don't have a book, then bring beer.BR>
Of course, anybody with expertise, chime in, come over, help, and get free beer.BR>
I just hate seeing somebody pay for something that one of us can do for free.

Posted by: HavinSomeFun

Brink,
Changing a Grizz CV joint is about a 45 minute job. It is actually not that hard. You can get a CV kit or get the entire half shaft (Cv joint already assembeld with boots and axle). We found a person on ebay that builds and sales heavy duty, complete half shaft kits for about $180. When we called Seahorn thaey wanted $189 for a factory (weak) half shaft.
What we did that day (for the flooded engine) was just drain the carb bowl, pull the plug and crank the engine and most important stood the wheeler up on the back rack to drain the exhaust. After that it cranked up and ran good the rest of the day.
For the Broken CV we didnt have to do anything that day. it was the front right CV so we just rode in 2 wheel drive the rest of the day (sometimes 3 wheel drive). The 4 wheeler wasnt even in a bind when the the CV popped.

Kevin

Bob

So does this mean no SE oklhoma trip this year ? I guess we can make a river trip a few more times before it gets cold on us.

Yes the low or dead battery will send the prairie into limpmode.

Jason, we can put your axle in.

Brent

Posted by: Bobman

Brent,

You guys can go,. I will just have to sit this one out. I have one more trick up my sleeve, I will have to wait and see if I get my new job. Right now I can not afford to piss off people at my current job because I am not sure of the new job. So for right now I have no way to plan anything.

Bob

Posted by: Brink74868

The reason for this post is two fold..

1. I HAVE figured out my schedule. I will have every other Saturday off starting with the 18th. I will have to work overnight on the 25th (and so forth and so such). I will need sleepy on the Saturday's I am off (till about 11 or noon, then will be good to go the rest of the weekend.

2. I spoke to Kyle at Sehorn today and the replacement axle will run about 235 (minus probably the standard 15% discount). He told me that it is for the ENTIRE half shaft including both CV joints and that even I could change it in about 45 minutes (which translates to about 3-4 hours of mild cursing) so I am going to try to tackle it. I got a printout of the diagram of the whole thing, so hopefully I can't screw it up.

I really appreciate everyone's willingness to help, but I need to figure out how to change these, for I forsee doing it again and again in the future.
Count me in on a trip SE if everyone decides to go (hopefully on my off weekend).

Polaris 600 Sportsman or Yamaha 660???

These are the two machines I looked at today in my quest for my first ATV purchase. Cost is the same for either machine - $6500.00 includes winch and racks. Both ATVs have the same accessories except the Polaris has a V-twin engine with more torgue.

Anybody got any input on reliability, performance, etc...???
Or, is there a better machine in this catagory that needs considering

James

Posted by: HavinSomeFun

That all depends on your riding style and what you want to use it 4. The grizz seems to have some cvjoint problems. My brother works for polaris and he says the only one he would own is the 500 ho. So the decision is kind of a hard one to make.
I do however know where there is a NEW '03 650 Camo prairie (V-Twin). It could be purchased for $5,800 and you still get all the factory warrany.

Posted by: Jamesh921

Did your brother give any specifics as to why he doesn't like the Polaris?

Where is the Prairie located?

This ATV will be used for trail construction, maintanence and trail patrol.

James

Posted by: lvthoutdrs

I have an '03 polaris 600. They are an inline twin. I have put 3000 miles of desert rocks, sand washes and mountain trails. Polaris sportsmans are the best riding quads on the market. Repair parts are available in almost all areas since there are so many Polaris dealers. I have not had any problems except ripped cv joint boots. They were my fault and only takes a few minutes to replace. It seems that most people I meet feel that the Polaris are the cadilacs of the utilitys. I have towed a lot of quads out of areas that the others high center or feel that their quads will tip over backwards.

I would buy one again.

Whatever you decide, all 7 of the major quad manufacturers make excellent equipment.
( Polaris, Bombardier, Artic Cat, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki)
Most sports only wish they had the choices we do.

Good Luck

charlie

Posted by: Brink74868

James,

I can attest firsthand to the CV joint problems with the Grizzly. I have replaced one and am in the process of replacing the second in 1100 miles (I've had it about a year and a half). I believe the secret is ....................Drumroll please..............

Grizzly's and sand seem to not mix well. I spoke to a group at Prague lake yesterday and they had 3 Grizzly's that are the same age as mine with no problems trail riding, but have never been on the sand. They have ridden mainly on the farm and in the hills of SE OK and SW AR.

On a different note,

There were well over 100 ATV's at Prague Lake yesterday. I think the secret is out, because I seemed to spend my entire day giving people directions to the lake (While I had to work)BR>
I went by in the morning at around 7:30 and there was 1 group with about 12 Polaris 4X4's surrounding the campsite. At around 11:30, there wasn't an empty parking place at the lake and there were about 45 quads in the parking lot having lunch (not counting the ones out on the trails. MAN IS SEMINOLE MISSING OUT!!!!!

Polaris' have been historically been hard to find good service for. I have owned 2 and they seem a bit "tippy" or top heavy.

I am seriously considering a Prairie or Kawasaki's new 750 Brute force to replace my Grizzly if it gives me one more fit when I take it riding... All in all, I love that B!&#@, but am tiring of the $250 inferior axles that Yamaha outfitted the beast with from the factory. I priced Gorilla Axles, but they are in the high $300's per axle.

Jason "that's all I got to say about that" Brinker

Posted by: Jamesh921

Jason,
Are you familiar with Duval Equipment on 177 in Shawnee? That's where I test rode the Polaris. Do you know anything about their service technicians like if they're any good or not?

The did tell me that they normally charge $70.00 per hour for repair work, but if you buy your Polaris from them, they knock $35.00 per hour off. They also said that if you buy from them and you need a repair they'll bump you ahead of other people who bought somewhere else.

One reason I like the Polaris is its tight 65" turning radius.

Your probably right about it being more top heavy, but that's because it has a higher ground clearance.

James

Posted by: Brink74868

James,

A friend of mine took his into Duvall to get his fan replaced. 4 weeks and $540.00 later, they gave it a tune up (he just changed all fluids, plug, and filter about a month before) and DIDN'T fix the fan. He was livid. The best Polaris repair that I found was in Durant, which is a 2 hour drive. Sehorn WILL NOT perform any work on Polaris products period.
As for the tight turns, with the top-heaviness, you don't want to be going over 2 or 3 m.p.h. on a tight turn or over you go. I flipped both of my Polaris' sideways whlie doing doughnuts.

There are almost TOO MANY choices to make when buying a quad, but if you're going to have problems what better one to have that excessive choices. All in all, you can't really go wrong with any of the newer quads. Once again, I am becoming more and more of a Kawasaki fan every day. The prairie seems to be bullet proof.

Good luck,

Jason

James,

I spend a lot of time out west. It may be the type of riding, but the Polaris is by far the most popular utility quad. When you meet a group of riders in the desert, there will be as many Polaris as all other brands combined. It may be the smooth ride. The rocks put you through a beating.

With the 4 wheel drive engaged, I have ridden the washes at 50 to 55 MPH and have never highsided. Just turn the handlebars and with power applied, the front turns. It is not as much fun as the Predator, but will go fast enough to get your blood pumping.

Two of the largest dealers in the LA area, chaparrel and motorcycle supermarket sell all the brands except artic cat. The Polaris occupies the front area of the showroom and they will have all the models on display. The japanese brands will only have the sport bike models on display. They will have the Bombardier utility models, but not as many.

If you need service on a Polaris, contact Country Equuipment in Newcastle. They have a well qualified tech. It is also a good place to buy.

just my observations on the subject
