I have been to these races in Ada before. I wish they would let the quads race first before all the karts and lawn mowers.

There is an article on the front page of the Oklahoman today about a MANDATORY HELMET LAW for ATV riders and it also says the law would not allow riders under 16, and outlaw passengers. The Health Department and Oklahoma Safe Kids Coalition is looking for a legislative sponsor for this bill. I hope they dont find one, but I bet they will. If they were to get this one passed the street bike riders will be next. This is an assault on our freedom of choice. I would call my legislator and voice my opinion oin this one.

Hey Jim, I havent seen you around in a while. How ya been? This is the first i have heard about this helmet law.

I wish they would make them run mufflers lol Have you raced there this season?

Posted by: JimsPolaris

I have been good, just very, very busy with work and family. I would like to ride with you guys again soon.

Today is the first I have heard of it also. It is not an actual Bill yet, but these people are looking for someone in the legislature to sponsor it. I bet they will find someone. We need to stand up against this one as a group if it becomes a Bill in the legislature. I believe they have until December 7th to file a bill. I think wearing a helmet should be a personal choice, just like when I ride my Harley on the street.

Does anyone know of any other state that has a mandatory helmet law for ATV riders??

I went to the indoor race once early this year, the exhaust got horrible towards the end of the night, they really need some good exhuast fans. I only spectate, i dont race.

Very True It was really bad last sat night. It was really cold so they closed the doors down and just ran fans. It would not be so bad if the 2 strokes would run smokeless oil.

Texas has some strict helmet laws for atvs. Years ago, Texas passed a law requiring full face helmets for motorcycles but with enough oppisiton, it was reduced to just a skull cap and later retracted all together to where it was up to riders to choose to wear a helmet to drive on the street. I put a post in your helmet law thread about how I feel also but at the moment I feel like ranting a bit so bear with me here. I ride alot in Texas at at the MX tracks its a no brainer due to the jumping and high speeds and all the tracks I have been to the people running the track wont mess around, you wear a helmet or you hit the road and dont come back!! Now the trail areas like Munster, Alligator Run, and Muddy Creek, they enforce the helmet law there even though it is private property. There is no park ranger or state official there to ticket you but again, no helmet-no riding. I dont so much mind a helmet law here in Oklahoma because being that I am enlisted in the military, I am bound to wear a helmet while operating my quad no matter what state I am in to prevent injury. If I get hurt and I am not wearing a helmet, not only am I in trouble with my chain of command, but my insurance can deny any medical bills and make me pay for it out of pocket so I got use to wearing a helmet real fast. I ride mostly at the dunes and MX tracks so I personally feel safer wearing a helmet while riding fast and hard and I am glad cause it has prevented some injurys to my otherwise worthless head in wrecks that were strictly my fault. Now if I am just out putting around taking pictures, video or relaxing on my quad or my wifes utility, I dont wear one due to the fact I am not taking a serious risk of wrecking at that moment with that type of riding, I only have to worry about someone else wrecking into me-common sense. My daughter is almost 6 and has been riding for 3 years now on her 50. No matter where she rides(front yard, track, dunes) I make her wear her helmet ,chest protector, boots and gloves, you just never know with kids, I have seen some strange wrecks with all ages but starting her out young, she has developed safety habits. The only time she isnt wearing a helmet is when she rides with me in a very slow, controlled enviroment where there is absolutely no chance of a the two of us getting into some sort of trouble. To make a long story short, I feel that if you are pushing the limits of your ability to handle the quad or your riding skill, wear protective gear and use increased common sense. I never worry about hurting my self or my quad, we are both repairable with time, but I couldnt live with myself if I hurt someone else not wearing a helmet cause I didnt use good judgement.

Steve"I feel better now I got that I got my 2 cents in"Reedy

Posted by: Bluegoose

Steve,
I agree with you on some things. I think places like Little Sahara and other conjested riding areas should have helmet laws, but let's think about this open minded. Do you want your daughterr to be banned from riding her 4 wheeler? Not only are they trying to require us to wear helmets, they want to ban anyone under the age of 16 from riding a ATV. We use them on the farm everday. I don't wear a helmet on the farm riding a utility doing farm work neither does my boys, but we do when we get on the sport ATV's even in the pasture. I don't need someone else telling me how to live and raise my children.

Guys there is a poll on NEWSOK.COM today about the 16 year old and under ban. Right now it is not in our favor.

We better watch this guys. There is people that want to take our freedoms away.

Ronnie (Just my two cents) Smith

Posted by: JeffGordonHater

Oh yeah, I forgot about the 16 and under thing! I don't see this happening because the big 4 would step in(Honda,Yamaha,Suzuki,Polaris) and jump on some politicians due to too many sales of atvs/dirtbikes are sold for the 16 and under crowd. I guy I work with and I talked about this last night and he was tellling me that they tried to outlaw ORM in Ohio for the 16 and under crowd and the big 4 fixed it by saying that they would not only stop selling all models of their quads and dirtbikes, they would stop selling ALL motorcycles-cruisers and crotch rockets included in Ohio and they would sue the state for all kinds of legal crap. Needless to say, Ohio took a step back and re-thinked the way they wanted to do business with the quad industry there. But mark my word, if this law were to pass here in Oklahoma, not only will I sell my property here and move back to Texas, I would burn the capital building down on the way out of town for the rest of ya left behind!! I brag to my buddies all the time back home about how liberal the laws here in Oklahoma and all the riding areas we have here, that is what made my wife and I decide to stay here after I soon get out of the military, but if all these laws kick in, the state is heading down a long, lonely, dark path if they think I am going to roll over and play dead why they pass some more worthless legislation thats not going to save the state any money or save lives.

Steve"nobody is taking the keys out of my daughters ignition but me!"Reedy

Posted by: JimsPolaris

I still think that helmet laws are a violation of my freedom and should be my choice not some A_ _ Hole politician who has never been on one!!!
I hope the Big 4 stand up and take notice of this. Street bike riders will be next if this passes. I gaurantee it!!!

You can't legislate stupidity!!!

Jimmy

Posted by: out18law18

also further into that article they mentioned requiring roll bars on atv's. Now that is just some uninformed stupid sh!t A roll bar would cause far more injurys than it could prevent. At one time in Australia they were required but they saw what was happening and revoked that law. I can just see rolling your quad and the damn roll bar breaking your ribs or wrist. LOL

Posted by: Bluegoose

Guys we can't sit back and wait for the "BIG 4" to do it. We have to get started right now on this thing. It is easier to fight before it becomes a bill than after. We faced this with running dogs a few years ago. Liberals and tree huggers were trying to put an end to running wildlife with hounds/beagles. We got it nipped in the bud before it ever came to the Legislature. Guess what Channel 9 was on their side. They aired stories that did not contain the whole truth. It is amazing how a story takes a different slant when edited their way. I know this for a fact, my sons and I were among the hunters that they interviewed and video taped. They left out part of the story.

I have already contacted my legislators and some other legislators that I personally know and am warning them of this. Most of them use them on their farms or hunting leases.

This could open up a whole new deal with insurance companies. You could be come negligent for letting your under age child ride or if they are over 16 and get hurt if they were not to have a helmet on. Quess who is not going to cover the medical bills.

First on the front page of the Oklahoman and now on Channel 9 news and website. Guys get busy, vote on the poll, call you legislators and your riding buddies. Strength is in numbers. Let them hear from us. If no legislator picks this up and pushs it for a bill, it is dead. It could also can die in committee.

Email Channel 9 and tell them you don't approve of them on this issue.

Could this happen? Hell yes. Remember the Chicken fighting bill. People get to decide that don't even have any connection to this sport.

Ronnie (it's time to let them hear from the owners/riders) Smith

Posted by: JeffGordonHater

I just got off the phone with my local congressman and he advised me that he grew up with a dirtbike and has a farm/ranch background so there was now way he was going to support any kind of bill that would outlaw any ORM vechile for any age group period. Now he did say that if there was enough push for a helmet law, it would have to be very specific as in state parks and such, but on private propery, use common sense. I talked to him for several minutes and he sounds like a good guy so hopefully this issue is just talk and no action taken. I also placed calls to the writer at the paper, and Kevin Pipes-the state health department chief of staff, but neither have returned my call yet.

Posted by: Jamesh921

Guys,
I shot off an email to ARRA (Americans for Responsible Recreation Access) to get their input on the helmet law. Hopefully, I/we will soon know what their opinion on the subject is.

Ladies and Gentlemen...

Lets follow the advice of these people and begin with an E-Mail Campaign. Like someone said earlier, I believe it was Ronnie, if we can get to our legislators early, perhaps we can stop this from ever coming out of committee. The Legislature convenes sometime in early february if I remember right...it's been a while since I checked. Once we find out what the committee assignments are we can concentrate on the members of the appropriate committee. Sound good to everyone? Meanwhile the links below will take you to a roster of legislators and you can contact your individual State Senators and Representatives.

Members of the Oklahoma State Senate

I was shocked that not only my congressman called me back today but this afternoon my local Senator did too!! I explained the situation to him and he put me on hold, went to the archives, and returned with yesterdays paper and read the article before talking to me!! Holy cow, not only do politicians read, but they comprehend! LOL! On a serious note, he took the time to do 2 seconds of research before responding to my conceren. Again, he stated that if this motion was to become a bill, there would have to be some concrete evidence that helmets would prevent accidental death on a large scale, not just 14 isolated incidents that the paper reported. He also was curious as to if this proposal was just to solo out atv's or if it was to include street bikes, the article in the paper was not specific. This senator was not 100% familiar with the atv or off road community so he asked me questions as to if quads were desingned for two passengers as to determine weather or not a law should be necessary as to outlawing passengers if the manufacturer has already stated that riding double is unsafe, common sense there. But he also said that he did not see a immediate need to outlaw quads for the 16 and under crowd without researching it inside and out. So in short, he will NOT support a bill for making 16 and under riding illeagel at this moment and helmets he was middle of the road on with out further review.

Hey Guys,
Here's a letter I'm sending to my legislators. Tell me what you think (and feel free to use any portion of it you like).

James

Dear Senator Coates,
It has come to my attention that The Health Department and Oklahoma Safe Kids Coalition is looking for legislative sponsors to sponsor a MANDATORY HELMET LAW for ATV riders. They also plan to pass a law that would not allow riders under the age of 16 to operate ANY ATV, and outlaw passengers on ATVs altogether.

I'm sure you understand that the ATV enthusiasts are absolutely, one-hundred percent in favor for the safety of their loved ones. But the overwhelming consensus from the ATV community is that these proposed laws are "over the line" and infringe on the rights of those who choose to ride ATVs. The ATV community feels that the "adults" of riders under the age of 18 should dictate the rules and regulations concerning their children. Our children should be the responsibility of the parents, NOT the government.

It is further strongly felt that adult riders 18 and over should have "the right to choose" whether a helmet is necessary for their type of riding.

As for passengers on ATVs, it would be prudent to realize that enthusiasts who ride double are NOT planning on committing "risky" manuevers or dangerous riding. It would also be prudent to believe that any passenger on board an ATV has the "choice" of whether they trust the driver or not - it would be the same choice as to whether that passenger should get into a "car" with said driver. It's a choice we all make on a daily basis - whether we trust the driver in/on "whatever" vehicle they are navigating (i.e. motorcycle, car, plane, ATV, etc...) or not.

It would be greatly appreciated by a large portion of your constituants if you would NOT support this proposed legislation.

Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

Sincerely,
James Hale
Seminole, Ok

Sounds great to me James. I also negleted to mention that I spoke with one local dealer and he said that he will make some phone calls to the same reps I talked to today. In the morning, I will also swing by another big name dealer here in the city and see what they have to say or what support they have to offer. I am also going to againg try to contact the author of the article in the paper just to see what brought this subject to his attention. Was this a story that he personally wants to write about or is the Oklahoma Dept of Health trying to push this and contacted him to get this published? This is a very fine line talking to reporters cause if this writer is a real "left or right wing"kinda guy, I suppose he cant write a negative story a day in the paper about quads if he so choses. I guess I am just ticked because of the fact that I dont know what thes Oklahoma Safe Kids Coaliton is all about, I mean how do they feel about kids statewide playing football where I am sure that more young adults get hurt weekly blowing out a knee or breaking other bones than the risk associated with a quad with the same level of supervision. Maybe I will start there and see what they are all about and try to find the facts out about the 14 deaths and 70 brain injurys, cause as always, I bet there is more to this story than what is being reported in the paper.

Do you want any letters from Texas? While Ginny and I wear our helmets most of the time, there are times when it is better NOT to ride a helmet. For example, if we are riding on flat ground, or on a RIVER BED, not going fast, or whatever. It should be our choice to wear a helmet or not. Let me know and I will send some letters if you guys think it will do some good.

You are doing good.

James,
Super letter. Others could use that letter just change it to your House member and senator.

Dawn,
If everyone will contact their local House member and senator will be the best. I live in southern part, so my senators and etc are different from yours and so on.

My senator told me that there is no way he will let it pass. He is an avid hunter and rider himself. I know he has
already contacted some of his peers, because I have talked to some of them myself after he had.

Keep up the good work guys.

I have contacted a few of the folks I know on the Democrat side of the House and Senate and have had a favorable reaction from them. They indicated they would have to see alot of proof that a law would have an impact and generally they were not supportive of this at this time. Hope they were shooting me straight!?!?!

James,

What was Butner's hold up this time??

Jason

Posted by: Jamesh921

Dude, you tell me.

Judge Butner gave himself until Dec. 21st '05 to make a ruling. So, I called our lawyer Wednesday and asked him what the verdict was. Our lawyer informed me that the Judge "had made a decision" but that he had not yet "put it down in written form" yet. So, until his "written form" is complete, we're still on stand by.

It seems like just another stall tactic to me. I feel that the "law" resides in our favor, but this judge is trying to find any way possible to rule against us - and he's taking his own sweet time by using stall tactics to find it.

Our lawyer has been practicing law for MANY more years than this man has been a judge. And he says that the law is unquestionably in our favor. He also says that a judge can do just about any damn thing he wants to as well. But I fervently believe that the ruling will be in our favor - I really do. It's still a waiting game.

James

Posted by: gsettle081

Good Lord Guys.....
What is the problem? Is this judge elected or just buddies with your neighbors? I didn't think judges could just delay things until the law changes, or it suits his agenda. OK, venting is over. James, maybe we should look South at Antlers....

Ronnie,

I would think (for some reason) that Mike would be an expert on helmets, he has several. I will say that I am guessing helmets are like everything else (again a mere guess) in that you get what you pay for. I am going to guess that the high dollar helmets are a better investment than those $49 J.C. Whitney specials....

Hey guys... Just wanted to let you other sport guys know that me and my brother and a few friends will be at the Sooner State Cycle Park on Saturday from about 10 AM till probably dark. The track is located on Hwy 177 (first shawnee exit if you are coming from okc) about 15-16 miles North of I-40.

Directions:
- I-40 to Shawnee
- Hwy 177 exit Go north (or stay in the left lane and turn left under I-40)
- go about 5 or 6 miles and you will come to a blinking stop light
- Go through the stop light and the track is almost exactly 10 miles from there... it's like 9.8 miles or something
- The entrance is on the left side of the road and there will be a little white sign that says Sooner State Cycle Park
- Just follow that road up to the track

There are also a lot of trails there. I think he said there was about 180 acres there or something. So the 4x4's can have fun too. We rode on some of them last weekend and they were pretty fun. The track has some nice jumps on it and some pretty nice doubles that I am going to try to make this weekend ... I was a little intimidated last weekend BR>

What is the problem? Is this judge elected or just buddies with your neighbors? I didn't think judges could just delay things until the law changes, or it suits his agenda. OK, venting is over. James, maybe we should look South at Antlers....*

Gordon,
If the Judge rules against us, I'm up for it for sure.

Steve,
Our property is located 3/4 mile off the highway. The road leading into our property is an old county road that hasn't been maintained by the county for over 40 years. However, the county never closed it, even though the landowners put up gates across it. We want the gates removed to allow public access, but the landowner is claiming that it is a "private" road. So, we had to go to court over it. We're just waiting on the judges ruling now.

Hey Guys,
I talked it over with David (by business partner) tonight and we came up with an idea.

The rumors of the Prague Lake trails being extremely dusty is an absolute fact. If you're riding in a group, you'll be blowing dust out of your lungs for the next week. If you guys would prefer (and it's totally up to you), we will host a New Years Day Polar Bear Ride at our place (Little River Trails) on Sunday Jan. 1st, 2006.

The public can't "come and go" on the road into our property yet, but we can all go in together as long as we lock the gates behind us.

If you guys want, we can meet at the Homeland Grocery Store in Seminole at 10:00 am and all truck out there together. If someone can't be there at 10:00, we'll make arrangements to meet them at a later time and lead them in. Either way, we are inviting anyone who wants to come to hang out at our place this Sunday. It'll be a BYOE (Bring Your Own Everything) ride (food, beer, etc...) and there'll be no charge to ride the park. It's free to anyone who wants to come.

Since our trails haven't been ridden (except by us) in 10 months they won't be near as dusty as Prague (or anywhere else for that matter) and we'll have the whole place to ourselves.

The river is way down and you can ride from one end of the property to the other right on the riverbed (be careful though, there are a couple of deep holes, but they are obvious and you can easily spot them).

We usually have lots of mud at LRT, but with the lack of rain the only mud you'll find will be on the river. And, there is lots of sand to play in as well.

Anyway, it's up to you guys. If you want to come out please post now so we can solidify plans to meet on Sunday.

Sorry for the late notice, but we just said "to heck with it, let's do it" today.

James

I'd like to go, but too short of notice for me. although I would like to have the chance some other time. thanks for the offer james, get ahold of me the next time and we'll go on a ride. how much land are we talking about for riding ??? also how do you get to seminole from El reno/OKC ?

also how do you get to seminole from El reno/OKC ?

when you hit shawnee just keep on trucking until you see the seminole exit and turn back south.

and james i am with bobby on this one on the short notice issue. since i allready have plans with others to be at prague at noon i am going to hold to it. but i had a good time at your place last time and look foward to future rides there once the judge does the right thing and quits screwing with you.

andy "sick as a dog but gonna ride anyways" b

James i agree we went to prague friday it was very dusty
we would love to meet you at homeland and ride at your place
there will be about 10-12 of us only problem it will have to be at 11am
will that work for you?

Posted by: Jamesh921

Greg,
11:00 is fine. Gives everyone a little extra time to recover from the night before.

For those who want to come, Homeland is located about a 1/4 mile south of the intersection of Hwy 9 & Hwy 99 on the west side of the road. Pizza Hut is right in the middle of the parking lot. You can't miss it.

YOU GUYS HAVE FUN AT JAMES' PLACE. We sure had a good time last year. Wish Ginny and I could go, but have to do the chores I put off today to go ride. BTW, Lake Murray is REALLY dry. Not too dusty, but a fire could take out all of South Oklahoma.

Gordon,
Sure do wish you and Ginny could come. We'll hook up another time though.

I wish everyone a Happy New Year and hope your hangovers are minimal.

I would be there riding with you guys today, but on my last lap at the track I tried to make a double that I have been trying to make all day. It didn't turn out to well. I would have made it if I had made it another foot or so, but I didn't ... my front tires hit wrong and the quad decided to drive itself. It threw me off and I started flipping, and so did the quad. During one of the quad flips it actually landed on my back and kept flipping. Think it flipped around 4 times, I didn't even know it hit me till the guys I was riding with told me. Nothing is broken on me though, my back is just really black and blue and I can hardly move. It was one hell of a ride though Maybe I can ride some more in a couple weeks after I fix my quad. It won't even get power now and the bars are really bent. Hope everyone has fun today, and Happy New Year!

The 2nd Annual Little River Trails Polar Bear ride went GREAT!!

We really had a great time riding with you guys and look forward to doing it again soon. You guys are welcome at our park anytime.

Thankfully, there were no major mishaps, just one quad that poor little Stephanie was riding inadvertantly ended up upside down in the river. But we got it dried out and going again in no time.

I hope everyone's New Year was as fun as ours.

Send me the details.

Ronnie, The ride was very dusty, but it was a good ride. Perfect weather, but the amount or trails were the only hangup at big red. They need about twice the amount of land they have to make it worth being a top riding spot in oklahoma. But it is a fairly new place.

There is an end coming to the warm, windy, dry days in central Oklahoma. We now have 2 days in the forecast with a chance of rain and it's about to become once again seasonably cool. So much for having somewhere to ride this weekend.

James, did I miss the post on the judges decision?

Posted by: Jamesh921

JGH,
The judge ruled that, even though the county commissioners never "officially" closed the road, he felt that since the commissioners chose not to maintain the road for over 40 years, that their lack of action constituted an affirmative action to close it.

He did rule that the commissioners could reopen the road any time they wanted though.

Hi Dawn,
The only thing we can do is petition the county commissioners to reopen it. If they feel enough pressure from the community, it is their duty to fulfil the community's wishes.

Here it is. Number 1 news story of the day!!!!

Senator Cain from District 46 has proposed legislation that says:

NO one under 12 can ride an ATV.

Everyone under 18 must a helmet at all times.

Nothing mentioned about motorcyles in all in this mess. They had a boy that had been injured and his family up at the capital today with the Senator, making the announcement of his legislation. He wasn't under 12 when it happened and with injuries they showed on TV, he couldn't have been wearing a helmet.

Guys it is time to contact your Senators and Representative!!!!!!!!!!!

If they get this, what's next?????? I don't need someone else telling me how to raise my boys. I have done a good job of raising my boys without them for 23 years.

Ronnie

Posted by: GrizzlyGreg

The story is also on http://www.newsok.com/ he was not wearing a helmet
did he have a helmet yes he did he just chose not to wear it.

How did the ride go at Bigred's Brent?? A little muddy?

Posted by: trailride

Andy, We had a good trip to Big Red's . The rain held the dust down alot from last time we were there. The creek had some water and some holes, but not anything deep to mention. I did however JUMP the highest i have aver jumped, and nosed my landing bent my handle bars down and proceeded to rearend a Raptor before the day was over.

Brent "you can only jump so high on a utility" Storie

There is also a bill in the legislature that would require us to register our ATV's also. I read about it in the Oklahoman last week. All that would be for is revenue generation for the state. I'm sure they wouldn't ust the money for something productive for ATV riders. It did not list a cost for this, but any cost is too much IMO!!!

Also, kind of off topic, but there was also a bill introduced that would require passenger vehicle inspections and it listed the price as $35. That is a little steep I think!!!

Jimmy"They are trying to get more of my hard earned money"Monteith

Posted by: bruteforcebob

Jim, they have already made it to where if you purchase a ATV you have to register it, I'm telling you they are milking us! lol, however, I did pay the 11 dollars to have mine registered, just so that if someone steals it they cant sell it
Bobby "just covering the bases"McGregor

Posted by: Brink74868

Jimmy,

Coming from the Law Enforcement side of the inspection thing, I think there needs to be inspections yearly. Since the inspection sticker disappeared several years ago, People think they don't have to keep their cars safe anymore. I have seen people driving with their windshields SHATTERED and get offended and borderline pissy when you stop them and tell them to get it fixed (Verbal Warning) and completely blow a gasket if you actually write a ticket. Since there is no mandatory inspection, People forget. On a different note, I do disagree with the depth the inspections were SUPPOSED to be performed. I think raising the vehicle on a rack and going over the entire exhaust system was a bit much, but a 5 minute "does all of your equipment work and is your vehicle SAFE to operate?" inspection would be nice. The reason that the inspections were done away with is the inspection stations were required to COMPLETELY inspect the vehicle from the rooter to the tooter and the inspection (if done right) would take approximately 15-20 minutes. The inspection station would receive 3 or 4 dollars for the inspection and it took more than that in minimum wage labor to do the inspection. If the station was found to be doing less than perfect inspections, they were subject to fine and loss of status as an inspection station.

In closing, I personally would pay $20-$30 yearly for the piece of mind that there are far fewer junk heaps running the roads that my children use, but I have seen firsthand the vehicles that aren't fit for hauling cubes to the cows in the pasture driving down the highway.

Ronnie,

I already wrote to my reps. I kind of figured it would make it out of committee as I think Cain is on the committee. He had the pull to see that it was assigned to a committee on which he sat. We should all write them and drop them a SNAIL MAIL as well...remember not everyone is as in tune with technology as we are. Also...not to pick on anyone individual but please refrain from extreme profanity when addressing this issue. There is a time and place for profanity but if we want to have any credibility at all we need to put forth as eloquent an argument as possible.

Ronnie thank you for tracking this piece of legislation. I should be more active in this but I am just too busy with my 9-5 and with trying to get some other financial ventures off the ground. Hey Guys,
How was your day today? Bet it wasn't as good as mine. Why can I say that? Because my wife Angela gave birth to our first BABY BOY (smoke cigars here). Yep, he weighed in at 7 lbs 9 ozs at 4:48 this fine Friday afternoon and was 20 and a one-half inches long. Not only did he come out perfect, he was born with a beer coozy in his hand - well, not really - I made up the part about the coozy. Let's hope he doesn't learn "all" his poppa's bad habits. BR>
Anyway, he and the wife are doing GREAT and will be coming home on monday or tuesday. He was a little stubborn and had to be taken by C-section (due date was Feb. 14th), so he and mom will have to stay a few extra days. But hey, I'm just glad they're both doing so well.

Since an ice storm followed his immediate birth, I'm assuming he'll prefer riding in the winter. Guess I'll have to buy us both some of that heated riding apparrel that Mike Waldron has. That stuff is pretty awesome (expensive, but awesome), but he's worth it.

Bob,
Is there an age requirement to join the club or does he become an exficio (sp) member? :0)

Looking forward to showing off my new boy,

James "proudest poppa in the ATV USA" Hale

PS
Do they "make" ATVs for newborns?

Posted by: JeffGordonHater

Congradulations James!! Hopefully mother and baby are doing fine. I looked into the quad thing for infants,(I have a 10 mo old), the closest I found was at Walmart where they had a little battery powered one. My wife wanted to decorate the babys room in ATV and she searched high and low for quad stuff and there isnt alot out there so she setteled for a dirtbike theme.

As far as this helmet law stuff again, I exausted all my energy back in the fall when this came up so I called the same reps for my area and voiced my 2 cents again, hopefully this will die and go away soon.

Posted by: gsettle081

Congratulations James!!!! YOU can bring your son down here to Texas and ride with about 5 other couples that have newborns. We are riding next Saturday. The moms and GINNY will stay in the motor home and trailers, and the guys get to ride. I love my wife. She loves me and the BABIES.

Does anyone know if the OCCRA is contacting our Senators or Reps? Has anyone heard from any Senators especially the ones around the city or tulsa, besides Cain?

This bill that bans kids under 12, has been misrepresented to the public on purpose. Cain wants it to sound like JUST a helmet law. What's next motorcycles?

Later,
ATV MOM

Sen. Patrick Anderson emailed me and said he is against this bill, but we have to keep on these people or they may change their minds.

The Little Sahara, Waynoka,Ok website has alot of info. on this, along with the Senators email addresses.

Posted by: GrizzlyGreg

Congratulations James and Angela

Posted by: Bluegoose

ATV MOM,

The senator from Tulsa is against the bill. Following is a copy from the report on the Bill.

"Sen. James Williamson, R-Tulsa, offered an amendment to remove the ban on riders under 12, but that failed on a 4-4 vote by the committee. "I'm very uncomfortable banning anything for young people under 12," Williamson said.

Sen. Todd Lamb, R-Edmond, concurred with Williamson. "I appreciate what you're trying to do," he told Cain, "but I'm also concerned about the ban."

My local Senator and Reprentative is against the bill. I have talked to my Senator and Reprentative at least 10 times. I know them personally. My Reprentative's son is my boss.

We all need to remind them how we feel about this. The squeeky wheel gets the grease. The other side is not being quiet.

I think it is going to come out of committee reports this week on the 23rd. All of my notes are at my office at school and I'm sitting at home, but I'm almost positive it's the 23rd.

Ronnie (I vented enough) Smith

thats what I'm thinking, but EVERYONE will need to wear a helmet on this ride (atleast for the pics), I'll have Jeff take pics he's a pretty good photogapher and I'll send them to the local news papers and see if we cant get some pics and a story in the paper for some brownie points with people on vote day

Thanks for the congrats, guys. And congrats to you too Shawna.

Brought the baby home today - that's why I'm up at 3:23 in the morning. Kid wants to eat and he ain't afraid to tell you about it. He's full now and seems pretty content. Guess I'll head back to bed.

A Prague ride sounds good to me, but I'm with outlaw18, warmer weather makes for better riding.

DriverDoyle,
Thanks. We will have to meet up at Sahara sometime. The first time I can go this spring will be Easter Break. I'm a high school Agriculture teacher and the spring time is took up with Livestock shows. I get to spend all of my spring break at the state livestock show. Send me a email address and will send you a picture of the sandrail since I rebuilt it into a A-Arm long travel. We jumped Buttercup one afternoon, landed 86 feet from the crest of the dune. Wild ride. I had Grandma in the rail with me. Her first time to ever be at the dunes. She just kept saying, We had all 4 tires off the ground. She now says we can't go without her.

Ronnie, I would like to see a pic of your updated rail also. I had big plans for Snake Hunt in April, but it looks like that wont work out. So I have new plans for Lake Murray, if anyone is interested in a 2 day camp and ride.

Guys
We are going to Jacksonville, Texas this weekend to ride. YOU are all invited. I know you don't like to cross the Red River, but it is ok. We will let you leave whenever you want.

BTW, Jacksonville is where the highlifter Mud Nationals will be held the last weekend of March.

If you look back at our web page, we had a camp/ride @ Murray April 22 last year. Alot of the group that was going to snake hunt , will now be in a pre season t-ball tournement . No not the players the dads and coaches. I will be going to murray the Friday 21st to get my spot. I just hope the Burn Ban has been lifted by then.

I'm looking forward to that battle... I'll have to get Eleanore out and blow the cobs out of her. She's been sitting so long she's gonna need a little tuning before taking on another 686. BR>

Hey guys I have been keeping up with what has been goin on with the SB 1830. I was reading the new Thunder Roads magazine and the Oklahoma ABATE had their legislative breakfast, during the event the ABATE political director called an emergency meeting. They were all informed of the SB 1830. They were also told that a member of the Oklahoma State Department of Health is so adament about the passage of this bill that he has threatened to stir up support for a universal mandatory helmet law if they help defeat this bill.
All of the ABATE members and the other folks attending the breakfast was in a unanimous decision to have a Freedom Rally at the Capitol. This rally will be held at the State Capitol on Wed. March 15. They are going to meet at 7:30 AM in the south parking lot of the Capitol and will go in to the Capitol at 8:00 AM as a group.
This bill will affect all of us and if any of you can be there please do to help oppose this bill.
Chris
