James, I'll be taking Stella and T.J. down to the crossbar ranch to try it out. (Gordon started some thing) Stella has been talking to the Manger at the ranch via e-mail so tomorrow where going to try it out. If you would like to hook up just let me know, I will send you an e-mail with my phone #. We plan on being down there at 9am and this time I'll be on time. If anyone else is interested the crossbar ranch is south of Oklahoma city on I-35, exit 55 turn right(west) go 1 mile then turn left(south) and follow the road to the end. Appoximately 4 miles. Oh the reason they want ever one to wear boots is because of the cactus and they can be work type boots.

I just talked to a motorcycle rider that went to crossbar. Said it was terrible. Very few trails and no loops, lots of cedar trees and rocks.
Great plans, but no money was what it looked like to him.
Is there another report?

Well I think that next weekend, Memorial Day Weekend, they are supposed to have a "ride/work" session to establish more trails. I think Crossbar is somewhat of a work in progress. I would consider going to check it out next weekend but I have to work so that put a quick halt to that idea.

Okay I have to say that I have seen some interesting things here in my native Oklahoma, some of which caused a second take. But never before, and doubtfully in the future, have I ever seen a tatoo raffled off...not one but two, hahaha. I wonder if Jeff Foxworthy reads this thread.
Grandma, where did you get your tatoo?

Hello everyone,
My name is Brad Black, manager of the Cross Bar Ranch Park in Davis. I met Stella and her crew today and she told me about this forum so I thought I would log in and update everyone on the ranch.
The Cross Bar Ranch consists of 6,500 acres of city owned property west of Davis. We have set aside 2,800 acres of the property for the development of an ATV/Motorcycle area. At this point it is the largest area set aside in Oklahoma for strictly ATVs and motorcycles.
We are new and yes we are a long ways from being what we will become. One of the things we are doing is allowing the riders to be involved in the trail development project. The first step in this process will me Memorial Day Weekend when we have several riders coming in to camp and help discover and identify the existing trails and look at ways to connect them into loops.
Currently the OCCRA is working with me on this as well as several riders from Oklahoma and Texas that have already ridden the area. Several OCCRA officers rode the ranch Saturday and loved it. I was surprised to see that someone on a cycle had complained about the area since we have only had very few cyclists here and they are all positive.
I would love for your group to be part of this project. I apologize that I am contacting you at this late a date but I just found out about your group. Anyone interested in coming this weekend just drop me a line and consider yourself welcome. We will be cooking out each night with plans for briskets and ribs. Collections for the food will be requested so if you wish you can pitch in. There is no fee for those coming to work on the trails. No cutting will take place, just riding and exploring. Bring a GPS unitif you have one, it will help a bunch.
Regarding the boot issue. Any boots will do. Being we are a city park our insurance company dictates the regulations we have to follow and boots being required was one of the regulations. We don't expect everyone to go out and purchase a $300 pair of riding boots. Anything over the ankle that isn't a tennis shoe will do. Helmets are much more important.
I realize this is a short notice to all of you regarding Memorial Day. I would love to host your group for a weekend. Just let me know what weekend would be good for your club and we can set it up. Just let me know.
If anyone has any questions or comments please feel to contact me by e-mail at okieangler@brightok.net or by phone at (580)826-6027. We want to have the best ridIng area in the state and everyone being involved is vital to us developing this area for everyone.

Brad Of Crossbar...
Will you be having any actual activities on the Monday of memorial Day weekend? I have the Monday off but Sat and Sun are office days for me. I am not sure what my schedule is for Monday as of yet...but if you will still have riders/workers there I may drop in for a few hours...its hard to say as I have no idea what anyone else is going to be doing Monday.
Bob "Anyone else think they might like to go down on Monday with me?" Bobman

Bob,
If you are free Monday come on out. I am sure that some of the folks will still be around as well as a few of them said they would be coming Monday anyway. Regardless you can still keep out the place and we can visit regarding setting something up for your club.

Brad,
I just found out that Monday I will be riding what we call "River Mist," one of our favoirte riding areas. There are going to be a few club members there...BUT... I will keep in contact and I am sure that either myself or someone else from the club will be able to get down there soon and do our best to coordinate with you.

So am i to take that you guys are gonna ride the river at purcell on monday?
Posted by: Jamesh921
Mike and others who may need the info,
Rivermist is located about 20 miles south of Seminole on Hwy 99. The "Rivermist" is actually an indian-owned quick stop and Casino (although the Casino is presently closed). The South Canadian River is about 1/4 mile south of the Rivermist Casino and has become known as the Rivermist Riding area.
To get to the parking area, you must cross the bridge heading south. It's a four lane highway and you must make a U-turn and get in the north-bound lane. Just before you reach the bridge in the north-bound lane there is a road on the east side. Turn on that road and follow it to the parking area, which is located under the bridge.
We rode out there yesterday and the river is pretty low, but there are still some deep holes in places. We had a blast and met some really nice folks. There's a "camp" about 10 miles downriver from the bridge that is really cool. They have built bathrooms and showers, as well as a 14' x 20' screened in building with an ice box, stove and tables. They also have RV pads with electric hook-ups, sidewalks and a playground for the kids. But, it's a private park, so you have to be invited to use their facilities. Luckily, we met many of the folks that hang out there and got an invite to come back anytime.
I found out through these folks that there are several of these "camps" up and down the river. They all got together last year and held a Poker Run on the river and they plan on doing it again this year. I think it's supposed to be sometime in June. I'll find out for sure later and let everyone know in case you're interested in participating.
I'm heading to Muskogee and Tahlequah this weekend, but I may try to make it back for monday if everyone else is going to be there.

Question:
Does "everyone" have to replace the brakes on their quad every six months, or is it just me?
The front brakes on my quad went south on me last week. Upon further investigation, the pads were completely gone. I checked the rear brakes and found the same thing.
Now, my quad is only six months old and has 1025 miles on it. Is this normal? The dealership says it's because I ride in sand and water. Do you guys who ride the river alot have the same problem?
James "this sounds fishy to me" Hale
PS Where are we gonna ride on monday if the river is bank-to-bank?
Posted by: trailride
James, Yes river water/sand will eat your brakes up fast. I had to change my fronts @ about 1000 miles also. your back break wil go faster.
If the river is up i will not be riding at all. But I doubt it will rain very much and most of the rain will soak up.

OK, I've made it back from the other side. The wife has had a great weekend, is grateful & I've been given the green light to ride monday.
It looks like the rain has, so far, held off so's we can ride tomorrow. So, I'll be there. Who else is coming and at what time? Is 10:00 am good or should we move it to a later time like 12:00 am?
James "you tell me" Hale

I plan to try to get there around 9:00 or 9:30 and try to get a head start on everyone and just ride down river. I will probably stop and take a nap under the railroad tressle and read my new copy of "Redneck World" as I sip an RC and eat a moon pie. I will see you guys at the railroad bridge...or unless you find me broken down halfway there.

You picked the wrong place.... We ( James & crew) plus myself made it to Prague today & it was pretty fun. The mud was ALMOST non existent. I did bring a change of clothes with me and managed to find a couple of places that even I had to be pulled out of. For the most part, I had a blast and got me and meathead a little muddy (I had mud over my headlights), but 95% of the trails were bone ry and really dusty.

Brent,
When did it rain at my place? Was the river really up while I was gone? We went to Little Sahara for the last week. We reconstructed the sand rail and now it has long travel suspension. 21 inches of travel makes for a soft ride. We will try and get some still shots off the video tapes and put them in our picture section. "Watch this" took on a whole new meaning. When the coil over shocks cycle twice you know you got some major air, in the sandrail even.
Now that I have got Little Sahara out of my system for awhile it's river time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I ended up staying with family this weekend, we rode 30 miles up the Red River and 30 miles back. Perfect weather, no rain. Also did some rock climbing. Did enough repitition finally got my nerve back after my crash, boy did that feel great to finally loosen up again.
Quad is up to 120%, all welded, painted and new bumpers installed. Also resides again in the city, so ready and able to go RIDE with you guys. Going to change air cleaner and all fluids before taking it out this week.
See you guys on the trails.

That's cool Aaron!
When are you going down to Ada?
Posted by: bigtex30
Hey James,
The sand will eat those brake pads quick. I had the same problem with mine. I stayed from the water and sand and they have lasted a long time now. That is the only down fall i see with 450. I got my back pads replace with some other type and that has help out alot. I am not sure what they put on there but they help me out alot. If i find out i will let you know what I have on their now.
David
Posted by: Jamesh921
Hey Tex,
Thanks for the info. How's your back brakes? Do they squeek as bad as mine?
I put new brakes on the back and they STILL squeek. The dealership recommended the FA brake pads so that's what I put on, but I'm thinking of going with a harder brake pad next time.
On another note, I'm planning on riding this weekend but I don't know where yet. I rode Camp Gruber last saturday and Prague Lake on monday. Gruber was torrential and hard on the body. The trails were EXTREMELY rocky so we couldn't ride very fast - not that I'm a speed demon - but it took us over 3 hours to ride 12 miles.
There were lots of trails though - and a great lookout point where the trails came out of the woods onto a rock ledge that overlooked the Arkansas River. It's a pretty awesome veiw. Don't get too close to the edge though; it's a 100 foot drop straight down.
Prague lake was a great time. Even though it was very dusty we all had a really good ride. I'm glad we finally got some rain yesterday to knock the dust down some. Glad you guys had a good ride in Purcell. We would have joined you but we got a late start and wanted to stay close to home.
Is anyone interested in trying Rivermist again this weekend?

I'm riding somewhere this weekend, dunno where yet. Is possible I'll be riding SW Oklahoma again. I'll know more in a couple days and depending on the weather. If not traveling, I'll keep posted here and meet up with you guys.
I don't have that many hours on my quad, air cleaner didn't look that bad, but seems I've been sucking dirt into my throttle body, through the sealing foam on the bottom of my paper filter. Just a note for everyone to make sure you check your air cleaner, with all the dirt we ride through. I have ordered a foam Twin Air off the internet, hope it comes in before this weekend. I'll be sealing the bottom of this one with Air Cleaner grease, to keep that nasty dirt out of there.

Mike, I have a buddy who is going to be in Ada tomorrow and he is going to try to make it by to pick it up, If he can't then I will probably try to head that way late tomorrow afternoon. Since no one is going to Little Sahara this weekend I'm going to try to change our plans to Purcell so Abby can play on her new ride and that would be a great "break In" place for the new engine.
Bob, I would be interested in that midweek ride, but it will probably be a little bit before Abby lets me take her new toy out on my ownBR>

Hey James,
My back brakes never make a nosie. My front brakes will if i go into alot of mud with water. but I try to rinse them off so it will stop. My dealership took care of the problem for me on the back bracks. I told them I will bring it back and go get another kind if they did not get that crap fixed. It is a pain to listen too while riding. I will try to get by there and see what they did or use and let you know next week.
Have a good weekend riding.

Bob,
Middle of the week sounds good to me. If they ever get me the rest of my tie downs, we could meet at my house and take them all in 1 trailer. I can haul 8 four wheelers in the new trailer. Is there a place that I can park my trailer? Keep in mind that I am 55 feet long (truck and trailer). Even better if we have electric, if not I have a generator that I can take.

Hello Everyone!
Just wanted to let everyone know that today we just cut and flagged a new 3-4 mile stretch of two track trail at the Cross Bar Ranch. It needs to be "rode in" very soon while the ground is still damp from the recent rains. I hope to have another 4-6 miles flagged tomorrow to complete the loop. Might not get it all done tomorrow but that's the plan. this first big loop should be around 12-16 miles when completed.
Anyone wanting to assist with the trails just give me a call. Mainly all I am needing is someone to ride them out with and help flag. The area we are working on is tight woods and elevation changes but is open enough that only minor cutting is required (low hanging limbs and such).
You can reach me at (580)826-6027. Also helpers don't pay so you get a free day and lots of riding in. Just don't forget the helmet and boots. Also the tick spray!!!!

Ronnie...
I know a large shaded camping area (no electric though) that is near the prettiest clearest mountain stream you imagine. You can easily park your rig there with room to spare. I am telling you once you ride here only your love for sand will make you want to ride anywhere else. You are correct about us meeting at your house. Ada is about the halfway point between my house and Rattan. I am not sure what kind of tie downs you need but I have enough ratcheting tie downs to hold my quad in place with no problem. You will want to take your Grizzly rather than your V-Force. I am going to try to get Aaron and Charlie to go and we can have one heck of a ride.
Charlie knows of an excellent overlook where you can see a small village at the bottom of a valley and stuff. I tried to find it last time I was there but was unable to. But I was in my truck and hesitant to take it on any super rough terrain like I would a quad. So Charlie...if you are reading this (hint hint) I would like to have you take me to where you overlooked the tiny town of Nashoba.
I really think this is the best riding spot in the state but that of course is merely an opinion because I grew up visiting the area to camp and fish a long time before I ever heard of a 4 wheeler...in fact it was in this area that I saw my first 4 wheeler.
Bob "I think it would be a great ride" Bobman
Posted by: trailride
If you guys are riding where we did last time, you could ride a street bike . I wouldnt hesitate to bring your V ronnie. Most of the riding can be fast , just watch out for the horses. I am ready to go back, but must wait until july.
Brent
Posted by: Bluegoose
The tie downs are the ones that go in the floor that you tie the straps to. I need to call and see if they came in while I was gone. Tyler and I would probably take the two grizzlies. The V-Force is probably going to get a new home and another 4 wheel drive will arrive in it's place. No body rides the V-Force. I don't have a 100 hours on it yet. Either a Brute Force or another Grizzly will be it's replacement for the river.

You will have to rmember, this reading is feet above sea level. It does not mean its 3.16' deep. Hello gentlemen, it has been awhile since I was last on here, hope everyone is still doing well. I am working with a group of guys that have opened a new trail system out at Lake Draper and if you havnt been yet, you might want to check it out. These guys have spent a lot of time and money over the last couple of months making a good local riding area for the whole family. There is about 7 miles of trail open for quads and they are building several more in the area surrounding it. The trail is plenty wide enough and goes only one direction so you dont have to worry about having head-ons with anyone. We are currently constructing about another 4 to 5 miles of brand new trails on a really nice piece of property right next to it and I was looking for some volunteers who wanted to come out and ride it over the next couple of days to help us break it in before the public gets to ride it. All the trails are laid out and there will be no work involved, just need some quads to run some laps to help break it in so the trails can be well defined before it is opened to the public next week. If you are interested, call me at 210-4620 and I will give you the details. Thanks-Steve

Heya Steve,
Is this the new West Elm Creek riding area?
James
HEY GORDON,
Sorry I didn't reply to the PM you sent me. I'm sometimes a little slow at returning correspondence. Sorry we couldn't make it to the Cross-Bar Ranch last weekend. We had already made plans with some other folks and were committed.
Did you guys make it up? How was it? Were helmets "really" required or do they just say that they are like at Camp Gruber but don't enforce it?

Andy, The deepest ive rode the river is 3.8 @ rivermist which is about 7' @ purcell. thats geting pretty deep. That is bank to bank which most of the river is shallow but the deep holes are very very deep and you cant tell where they are.
Is anyone interested in the Lake Murray camp/ride the 18-19th of this month? It should be warm enough to swim on this trip. And the kids are welcome again on this ride.

Hello ?????????? Is anyone here. Did we go from an atv riding club to a atv OWNERS club???? Where are all the riders?

It has been pretty quite here lately.
Cross Bar Ranch report.....
Pretty good area ( will be better when they get more trails "rode in".
Yes helmets and BOOTS are required. This is City owned land and their insurance company demands it. The boots can be any kind of over the ankle boot. This is not a bad deal as there are ZILLIONS of Chiggers. I have not had chigger bites since I was a little kid. Got about 30. Ginny nearly had as many.
Brad (mgr and Davis Policeman) is great. He showed us a lot of the area, but had to go get snakes out of Turner Falls. He made us brisket for lunch. I guess in Oklahoma, riding with guys with pistols is no big deal..... (Think about it, this is the 5th time we have ridden with our guys carrying pistols)
2800 acres of ATV trails. About 6 miles of a loop, and 6 or 7 more of trails. Will be a lot more when Brad gets it cut in. We should all go up there and ride it in lik we did at James' place.
3000 acres of horse trails, separated form the ATV trails. This is the way Seminole should have done it. ( BUT that is only MY TEXAS TOURIST OPINION... Why else would I drive an hour and a half to go to Oklahoma)
Anyway, we enjoyed it, and think it will be really nice one of these days. WE need to go ride there as a group sometime.

James,
Yes it is the new Elm Creek area, just one part of it is done(7 miles of atv). Our group is helping them out with some more area just behind it. Once complete, the whole area will be really nice to be here in OKC. Are people still coming out to your place and riding?
Steve

steve,
what kind of riding is the new area? (tight with alot of trees, open and fast for the sport quads, or lots of mud for the 4x4's) just curious what machine i should bring when i get a chance to ride it.
thanks,
andy b.

steve,
opps is forgot a question.....are helmets still required? and is there going to be a place to deposit money f0r riding or are we still gonna have to go to the marina? to pay.
Posted by: Wolfcop
Thanks for the kind words about the Cross Bar Ranch Gordon.
Before anyone brings it up I was the one that Gordon was referring to that was carrying the pistol. I am a police officer on duty and firearms aren't allowed on city property. Just wanted to clarify that before everyone showed up packing iron!!! LOL
Regarding helmets and boots. Due to the ranch being city property the insurance company mandates helmets and over the ankle protection. I was also told that the new Draper area also has a helmet and boot requirement. Due to liability issues it is something everyone should be aware of.
Enjoyed having Gordon and his better half at the ranch. Hopefully we will begin flagging the next stage of the trail loop this next week. When finished this first loop should be in the neighborhood of 15-20 miles. This is only in about 1/4 of the ATV/motorcycle area so there is plenty of room for more trails as we can begin clearing area.
The CHIGGERS are horrible this year. I don't know about the rest of the state but those suckers have just about eat me up. I went out a few days without spraying down good and I am paying for it!!!
Look forward to everyone coming out to the ranch. Progress is being made and with everyone's help and suggestions this area will be a great spot for off road riding.

I thought I would post this for everyone. It is the rules for the Crosstimbers Riding area at Lake Draper. The rules were posted on the OCCRA Forum so I thought I would post them here for everyone since there were some questions about them.

Andy, this new area is a mixture of both. It starts out with some woods that has just a couple of tight spots, then it opens up to some wide open areas and ends with some more woods. There is alot of elevation change and is a good all around fit for any quad. I personally have only rode it on my 400ex and have tried to ride it as a cross country track(OCCRA practice)and found out that is one heck of a work out. I couldnt make it all the way around without having to stop and take a break. My wife has rode it a couple of times on her 500 Sportsman and she can handle all the woods and my 6yr old rode the entire trail on her 50 with only a couple of little hang ups. As far as the mud, well the entire trail is one way and I am under the impression that the whole area will be closed if there is going to be a chance of bad weather. The management is dead set against letting the trails get into the condition that the other trails end up in. Errosion is what got the other area closed so they are going to prevent that from happing here so it would be safe to say that there will be no mudding there-sorry. You still have to pay at the marina and I have yet to see a single day on the weekend where there hasnt been some one on the gate to check for permits and helmets, they are serious about safety and to make sure the place is taken care of. All of the profit goes back into the maintenance of the place.

Oh yeah, what I like best is that if you get tired of riding the trail, there is a really nice MX track there to get your high speed airborne fix. It is fun just to kick back and watch some rookies make some laps and attempt some of the jumps. Beside the MX track, the kids have their very own circle track that is perfect for the little ones. After you check the place out once, you will see it is pretty nice and it is only going to get better with time. They have another 20-25 miles of trails planned that is very scenic and gives you some choices that wont bore you every weekend. There is a bigger parking lot planned and some more camping in the works, just give it a little time to grow.

Where is the MX track located? I might go there during next week.
Posted by: JeffGordonHater
The Mx track is located on the back side of the parking lot where the u-turn is. There is a small green gate big enough for one quad at a time to go through and follow the trail marked by the bails of hay. Just be careful on the step-up, it is pretty high and not much landing room. There is a pretty nice table top to play with too.

Mike,
It looks like we may have a change of plans. We're meeting at the Rivermist Quick-Stop (approx. 20 miles south of Seminole) at 10:30 this morning and getting on the river from a private land-owner's property. It's about six miles down river from the Rivermist Bridge.
However, if the river is bank-to-bank at Rivermist, we'll head downriver to the Holdenville location just south of the Holdenville Lake Dam.

Heya Gordon,
Thanks for asking. Our pre-trial hearing was yesterday (Monday) and the judge set the court date for August 1st, 2nd & 3rd.
He also set the parimeters of what will be discussed and it came down to three issues;
1. Was the road into our property ever an open county road,
2. If it was, has it ever been officially closed, and
3. If it hasn't been closed, has it been abandoned?
And our response is this;
1. Yes the road was (and still is) an officially open county road and we have documentation to prove it,
2. We've already proven (and the judge has agreed at our past court appearance) that the road has never been officially closed by the County Commissioners, and
3. Abandonment is irrellevent. Since it takes an official action by the County Commissioners to close a road, abandonment cannot be considered as a ruling by the court.
That's our case in a nutshell. We're standing in faith and believing God's favor will prevail and we'll be open again in August. It'd sure be nice if ya'll would say a prayer for us.
James

I am still alive and kicking (kind of) . I have been landscaping, pouring concrete, setting up the pool, hanging with the little meatheads, and the last two days.... my body has been rejecting nutrition and immediately sending it to the evacuation porthole . Also, my days off have changed as well as my alternating Saturdays & I've been trying to get used to that. To top it all off, the carb on the Grizzly has also been rejecting nutrition and sending IT immediately to the evacuation porthole as well . Other than that, I've been doing alright. I have found plenty of time as of late to catch up on some reading in the restroom & feel smarter every hour or so.

So, did you guys ride Honobia this weekend? If so, how was it? I almost went down there but found myself closer to a trail further north called Wolfpen Gap. It wasn't planned at all - the wife and I just happened to end up there by a series of unique circumstances.
You guys are gonna LOVE Wolfpen. That place is pretty awesome, but don't rely on the maps they give you; you'll have to ride the area to find your way. The maps just leave you scratching your head.
For those of you who have the option, set your suspension for a soft ride. The terrain is very rocky (not near as bad as Camp Gruber though) but sometimes it gets pretty rough. Alot of it is smooth riding, but be prepared for some rough "areas" as you ride through.
The trails aren't very well marked; although I think they were at one time. There are some signs here and there, but many have either been vandalized or down right stolen/removed/misplaced, as some joker's idea to confuse folks - which really sucks. I can't believe the stupidity of some people.
Anyway, I managed to find my way around the park (with a little help from some locals) and finally met up with some folks who had been there before, but STILL weren't exactly oriented. Between them and I, we finally got a handle on where we were and how to get around the trails. We had a great time hanging out together and I got some great pictures. When I get them developed, I'll need one of you guys to help me get them posted on here so everyone can see how awesome this place is.
The folks I met were two groups - one was from Houston Tx and the other was from Memphis, TN and they were staying there for the WHOLE WEEK!!! WOW!! Talk about committed to ATVing.
Wolfpen Gap has approx. 41 miles of trails; I rode for 38 - but some of those miles were backtracking trails I had already ridden - which means I MUST go back and ride the rest of them.
If anyone needs any more info, just let me know.

Mike,
Wolfpen Gap is located just outside Mena, Arkansas near the southeastern Oklahoma border. You can check out the camp info and trail map at http://www.wolfpenatv.com/MainPage.html
Be aware though that Mena (and the surrounding counties) are DRY counties and sell no alcohol at all. I didn't know this when I arrived and ended up driving back to Oklahoma to the nearest store to purchase some of the frothy liquid. The closest store was 39 miles away!!!BR>

Hey Guys,
I heard a rumor that Sehorn Yamaha is providing an ATV to each of our state representatives this coming weekend. From what I heard, they are going to ride the South Canadian River at Rivermist.
I was told that the goal of this River Ride is to keep Oklahoma's rivers open to riding by showing our Reps that we are responsible ATV enthusiasts that respect and appreciate our environment.
Although I appreciate Sehorn's motives, I feel this "may" backfire on all of us when the Reps see all the trash and litter that has been dispersed under the bridge and along the river.
In any event, the Reps will be coming this weekend to ride. I'll post more info as I get it as to exactly when they plan on coming.
James

James
Use this to YOUR advantage. Have a bunch of trash sacks with you guys, and pick up the trash as you go. It was probably not ATV people that dumped the trash in the first palce. Just a thought.....
Posted by: TheSuzukiKing
I had considered carrying a trash bag. Was sickening to see the trash repository at the river, unfortunately SOME had the thought that the rain would fill the river and wash the trash away. It has to go somewhere. Also witnessed a father teaching his child to throw water bottles in the river. When we asked the child about littering, his dad was upset and threw his beer can down and left. Most places persons are considerate, but always a few that ruin for everone else.
Can't fix stupid.

Okay lets address several folks in one message:
Andy B:
Last night at Wildwings NW Expressway, I posted a 13907 and took #7 nationally on the NTN Boards. Granted it was a Sunday night but it was still my first 13 and ALMOST a 14...It was great to get into the top 20 for my first time...Let alone top 10.
OKBOW:
Devils Backbone may be considered off limits by the rangers...depends on what mood they are in as to what they decide is off limits. Be careful they are writing tickets down there like crazy. They are using air planes and choppers to look for those riding "trails" instead of roads. According to them the only thing you can ride on is, "Something you would drive a family car down" and that is pretty much the language they use to decide when and where to write tickets....gotta love small men with small minds and big guns...give them a little authority and all of a sudden they are Wyatt Earp and Oliver Wendel Holmes all rolled into one.
James:
I agree with Gordon regarding the presence of legislative officials. This could be an opportunity to present a positive image of ATV riders. If they are being given an opportunity ride and converse with ATV'ers...I think it would be a good idea to make sure that we stack the deck and connect them with some good people.
Brent:
Glad you are back on the boards hope you enjoyed vacation..now get to work!!!

FYI regarding Honobia and Three Rivers....
They aren't using planes and helicopters to locate wayward ATVer's. What you are seeing is the peak time of the area's marijuana cultivation and harvest. There are remote illegal plots of marijuana scattered all over the hills in this portion of the state. From above you can see them due to difference in the shade of green. What they are looking for is human activity in and around these plots.
It's tough work doing drug interdiction in this part of the state. I know, I have done it. It's hot and it's very DANGEROUS. Some folks in this part of the state would rather leave you to be coyote bait than talk to you.
So one reason you are seeing a big crackdown in the ATV traffic in this area is due to the fact they have a hard time telling the good guys from the bad. If they can keep the good guys on the roads then it's easier to figure that the ones in the remote areas might be working the drug crops.
There's more to it than you realize. Those small men with small minds are your first line defense to keeping drugs out of your kids hands. Give them a break!
Posted by: Bobman
Wolfcop...
Actually I've been speaking to a reprsentative of the land owners...John Hancock Insurance Company, and he looked into one incident in particular and told me that the individuals were targeted via plane and the point at which they would emerge was radioed to Rangers on the ground. The rangers then waited for them at the trailhead and issued the citation. So according to the land holder they do use the aircraft to look for ATV riders. This was back in February so I dont think it was related to drug cultivation exercises.
I myself wish Hancock would terminate their contract with the state DWC. The best way to mess things up is to get the state involved. For 40 years you could go down there, ride where you wanted, camp where you wanted and fish where you wanted as long as you didn't cut any live timeber...and you could do THAT if you went to Weyerheuser and got a firewood cutting permit. When they sold to Hancock things remained the same until DWC decided to get into the picture...and like everything else they touch, the wonderful State of Oklahoma screwed everything up to the point that no one can do anything...gotta love beauracracy.

OKBow...
Let me tell you why I have a bit of a negative opinon of law enforcement. I personally know two (used to know them have not spoken to them in years) individuals in the law enforcement community. They have openly told me things that they have done (and probably continue to do) such as when finding a stolen car, they go through and check out any CD's in the car...if they find one they like they take it because the theft of the CD will naturally be blamed on the indicuduals who stole the vehicle to begin with. Another cop I used to know told me that he has comitted perjury one more than one occasion to save face at trial.
Let me tell you another thing that wonderful members of the law enforcement community have done for me personally. While driving to work one day during a heavy rain I lost control of my vehicle and slid off over into the ditch and was stuck. I called my wrecker and was waiting for him. I did not impact another vehicle. I did not impact any city property. I did not tear anything up at all other than the bumper of my truck (and that was minor). The incident occurred at 6:30 AM...the wrecker told me that he would be running a little late but that he would be there. At approximately 8:00 AM the wonderful "Civil Guardian and Protector of the Realm" showed up and asked me if I was okay. I confirmed that I was fine and was just waiting on the wrecker. He asked me what happened and I told him I wasn't sure. I may have hydroplaned or something but I lost control of my vehicle and slid over into the ditch. He went over in his car and started writing me a ticket. Meanwhile the wrecker driver arrivive and pullled me out of the ditch... When he pulled me out it was discovered that the side wall of my tire had blown out...so it was a blow out that caused me to slide off the road. The wrecker driver and myself pointed this out to Officer Phife but he said, "Well, I've already got this written up so I am gonna go ahead and chalk this up to speed too fast for conditions".... now my question is...he arrived on the scene an hour and a half after the fact...how does he know what speed I was travelling????
You are correct I have no experience as cop...but I am not altogether ignorant of the system either...I do have a degree in Law Enforcement Administration from the University of Oklahoma.
I am not saying that all law enforcement is corrupt...we have one member of law enforcement in our club that I am happy to call my friend and I have ridden with on many occasions and I like him really well. I am just saying that my knowledge of the way ODWC officers aka game rangers interpret and enforce the regulations regarding ATV riders is assenine. There are NO POSTED signs designating where you may or may not ride. Furhtermore they do not seem to have any STANDARDS that they apply when enforcing these rules. What one Ranger may consider off limits, another may allow you to ride on...the guys I have spoken to who were written up said there was absolutely nothing posted to indicate that the trail they were riding on was off limits. IF they are going act capriciously and not adopt a standard criteria of what constitutes permissible riding areas then they should not be writing tickets for merely riding ATV's.

Nice to see the ATV club hoppin at least. What we need I guess is some heated discussions. I've only, luckily had great encouters with the police. I got a driving award the other day, the police officer when I was defending myself took me as a smartallic, when he realized I wasn't he at least scratched out and lowered it two miles per hour so it wouldn't go on my record. Really hard thou to tell him what happened, without sounding like a dilbert. Always Yes, Sir, No Sir. Tell ya what, I got caught, I deserved the ticket.
Only grip have with police is there seems to never be one around when I see an idiot driver, only when I'm an idiot I get stopped. =-)
Would suck to get a speeding ticket on the trails with my quad.
At Purcell, this police officer was ordered to give everyone tresspassing on the private rail access road a ticket, he let all of us go home with a warning. But on that note, while shooing us off. A family was trying to run across the tracks with full fishing gear, poles, cooler trying to beat the train??? It's the dumb one's that ruin it for everyone else.

I am not going to debate either you about LE Officers, but will say that I am sure that they wouldn't appreciate your blanket statements about them.
Futhermore since you have a degree in Law Enforcement Administration, no doubt you have heard many times that,"Ignorance of the law is not a defense."
Thank you for addressing your own statement that I quoted instead of shifting the subject to why you shouldn't have got a ticket one time and how you allegedly knew some LE Officers that were doing immoral things. Guess since they sucked that must mean they all must suck. Appreciate you clearing that up for everybody.
Posted by: Bobman
Realizing that ignorance of the law is NOT a defense...it should also be said that not posting an area as being off limits is a poor interpretation of the law. If the area is not posted as being off limits, how does the Ranger know that it IS off limits? The fact is he DOESN'T...if there is nothing to designate the LEGITIMACY of a riding area, then conversely there is nothing to designate the ILLEGITIMACY of the riding area. Ie...if there is no sign to say that it is off limits, Ranger Joe has nothing to tell him that it is off limits.
Also the acts theseofficers eluded to were not alleged, the officers themselves were the ones who told me that they committed these acts. Therefore taking them from alleged to admitted. And also I made the express comment, "I am not saying all law enforcement is corrupt" so therefore I did not paint all law enforcement with a broad brush...For the purpose of this conversation (other than the cops I knew years ago) I am directing it at ODWC officers aka Game Wardens/Game Rangers etc.
I could certainly see the validity in writing a citation to someone for fishing or hunting without a license, disregarding fish and game limits and other laws. But for them to arbitrarily say, "You can ride here, but not here" without having some sort of legal definition to govern where individuals may or may not ride is basically "legislating on the fly" and I do not think that an individual law enforcement officer should have that much lee way. I think he should be able to enforce the law and possibly interpret the law...but certainly not to CREATE the law which is what they are doing when THEY (Not state statutes) determine that a riding area is off limits. If an area is posted then I would be the first one to say, "Write them up." But when an area is unmarked as being legal or illegal there is nothing to inherently say that it is illegal other than the mood of the officer writing the ticket.

Unfortunately, I have seen SEVERAL ATVers throw their trash down at the river. Mike (SuzukiKing) witnessed it too while we were down there riding a few weeks ago.
I went down there both Saturday and Sunday this past weekend and witnessed it again - several times!!!
It really sucks that these guys have no respect for the privilage they've been given. However, I think I know why they have no regard for the area - because there's "no accountability".
There is currently no law enforcement down there for them to answer to. So, they treat the area how they want KNOWING that there'll be no negative repurcussions on them directly.
What I 'd like to see (and I know some folks might disagree with me on this), is to see someone lease the entry point to the river and oversee it. This would enable the leesee to clean it up, regulate it and hold people accountable for their irresponsible actions. And, I firmly believe that this would minimize the deterioration of the area.
Of course, this would mean that it would become a fee area, but I feel it would certainly help rectify the problem. I know it wouldn't make littering go away altogether, but it would be a major step in the right direction. And, it would send a message to those who disrespect the area that it won't be tolerated any longer. And if they step out of line, there WILL be repurcussions.
Now, I understand that there are "private" camps up and down the river and that those folks wouldn't be accountable to the leesee. However, it would send a message to those folks that their behavior is being monitored by the leesee and its patrons. And when people know they're being monitored, they tend to be a little more cooperative.
How would the river be monitored?
I would suggest using a portion of the leesee's fees to pay for a deputy and an ATV to patrol the river. With the presence of law enforcement, EVERYONE (including those who enter from private camps) would be "on notice" that their actions could land them with a fine, or even worse, in jail.
With that said, let me say this, I'm NOT a proponent of more beauracuracy. But I completely detest the way some people treat their privilages. And the only way to change their behavior is to hold them accountable (in my opinion).

Sorry if I sounded harsh but I am a police officer and also a manager of a new off road riding area. I am working my tail off trying to provide a nice area for folks of all riding abilities to enjoy while keeping it scenic and safe. I am a one man show providing security, enforcement as well as cutting the trails and keeping the grounds kept. My career is based on off road riders and I welcome them with open arms.
Of course there are bad eggs out there. As a supervisor on a force I have had to set a few down and bring them back to reality. But we are also the ones that is watching your truck to make sure that your tools stay in it while you are out riding. Add to it I am also making sure your truck and/or trailer are there when you get back. Of course you didn't see us there but you found your stuff where you left it.
I have seen comments on here about myself and my wearing a gun while working at the ranch. Unfortunately it is a part of our equipment. If I never have to draw it in commision of my job I consider my law enforcement career a big success. But if I do, I will fall back on my training and years of experience to do the best to my ability.
One needs to remember, I am the only officer on the ranch and I cover 6,500 acres. That is over 10 square miles of rugged, rural terrain that is hard to tranverse. If I get into a life threatening situation, back up for me might be 30 minutes to an hour away, depending on where I am at.
Don't knock all law enforcement because of one ticket you don't feel you deserve and two idiots that have no morals. Some of us do it for pride and community service. In my case I am salary and don't get paid for hours over 40 per week. Often I put in 12 to 18 hour days and I'm not the only one.
Eastern Oklahoma is the hardest area to patrol for Game Wardens in all of Oklahoma. They not only have to deal with game violations, they are right in the middle of the drug trade. Ever see a game warden in SE Oklahoma with many years of experience? Not many, most of them transfer out when another county opens up.

Take a few days off of the forum an see what happens!! In response to the previous 23 messages:
I (hopefully) am the good cop spoken about earlier. I have seen a couple of &#%$ ups and a whole tassel full of good cops that do what they do because they give a $hit. We, as a whole, are definately not in it for the money. I, personally, do it for many reasons mainly for the 4 days off in a row twice a month . That said, I have to agree with parts of everything said and disagree with a few points (No, I will NOT specifically name which is which).
On a different note, I need to address a few things.
Gordon,
I think the puppy idea won't fly since I got a Rott pup for fathers day that died 2 days later. I haven't been able to visit since Saturday since they have been closed, but I plan on calling to check on it every day until it's discharged.

Okay guys...
Okbow & Wolfcop
I am just going to reiterate something for the third time. I am quoting from my original post on the subject, "I am not saying that all law enforcement is corrupt."
That sentence was posted in my original posting. Even though I have said that (this being the thrid time) you have taken the impression that I am anti law enforcement opverall. My original reference to small men with small minds referred directly to the ODWC officers who write tickets to people who are riding on areas that ARE NOT MARKED AS BEING OFF LIMITS. Then in another post I extended my comments to certain officers with whom I have had contact with in the past...and yes in my opinion they have been total a-holes. You don't see me on here complaining about the ticket I got when I DID run a red light, I am not complaining about the ticket I got when my parking meter ran out...those are justly deserved tickets.
Jason B seems to be a good cop and I know he is a good person. He has told me about the way he has done things on his job and they all seem to be within reason and good judgement and such. The Park Ranger at Murray named Joseph is a good guy we spoke to him at length and even welcomed him into our camp and offfered him pop and or snacks.
I will also admit that I did extend the context of this thread to address other persons than ODWC officers and I appologize, not for my words or sentiments but for getting off subject and not keeping my comments and conversation directed towards the officers in question ODWC officers.
Wolfcop, I do have a couple of general questions regarding the construction of Crossbar...why is that being done by the poilice force and not the Parks and Recreation Dept? Just kind of curious on that one. And also, if it is a city owned property why is it called Crossbar Ranch? That sounds like a privately owned enterprise. Why not call it Davis City Riding park or something like that? Again just curious about those two aspects of crossbar.
Bob "Not against all law enforcement but thinks ODWC needs to either post signs or stop writing tickets" Bobman
Posted by: Wolfcop
Bob,
The Cross Bar Ranch Park is named as such because the "Cross Bar + " was the cattle brand used on the ranch when it was a working cattle ranch.
The ranch isn't being built by the police department. It is being built by the Davis Municipal Authority. I am the manager of the property. I also happen to be a CLEET certified officer so I am commissioned as an officer in Davis to cover the law enforcement needs of the ranch. Hence, when I am doing one, I am also doing the other.
Posted by: Bobman
Wolfcop...
I see....so the name is to sort of keep the historical perspective of the area...plus it does sound better than Davis City Riding Area or something like that.
Sorry I ruffled any feathers....I just get really ticked off at the writing of senseless tickets that really do not merit anything or warrnant penalization.
I just think that ODWC needs to post trails they do not want people riding on. A simple do not enter sign would create a much more effective solution than not telling folks it was off limits and then writing them up for it.

Gordon,
Funny you mention the "Joe's" shirt. I was in Stillwater just last night and purchased one for myself (Yes the make them in my size...kinda surprised). But those shirts are a staple of most Oklahoman's wardrobe. While the shirt is worn extensively in Oklahoma, I've even seen one being sported in London while visiting many years ago. I think the shirts transcend OU/OSU rivalry...errr I mean OSU/OU rivalry. Because many sooner fans, no matter how bad their tastes may be in other aspects of life will wear an Eskimo Joes shirt even though for some ridiculous reason they have chosen to align themselves with the sooners...I guess there is just no accounting for taste BR>
Like I said, I bought a Joe's shirt last night. I've brushed my hair, brushed my teeth and what not but I still don't look as good in mine as Abby does in hers...wonder if I should get a new hair stylist....yeah that must be it Hahahaha. I am kind of the reverse here in OK. I have two degrees from OU but my team loyalty has always resided with OSU. I lived in Stillwater for 4 years and was back there last night visiting old friends. I have to tell you that if I could find a good job in Stillwater, I would really seriously consider moving back there. It's a perfect sized town, not too big not too small and with all of the coeds around I have to say that the scenery is really hard to beat.

I was riding today and every time I went down a hill I kept hearing a clicking sound from the front end. Kind of like a hammer on a pipe. Then my computer kept switching from 2 wheel to four wheel drive but the wheels weren't engaging. On the spedometer it just keeps going from 4 wheel to 2 wheel flashing back and forth. As far as I can tell it still goes into 4 wheel and two wheel like its supposed to, but i don't want to mess anything up. Anyone have this problem? I just hit 8 hours on this machine and I'm a little concerned. Thanks in advance for your input.

This sounds like the KEBC Acctuator . Mine did it also. The 2x4 4x4 swithcing indicates which Acc is out. You have one on your side cover and one on the front diff. More thane likely the the engine breaking acc is the problem. Is it switching from 2-4 wheeldrive about every second ir faster? There is a reset for this but since it is under warranty, i would let them do it first.
