Coos Bay.

We stay at spinreel(north end of coos bay dunes) for a week every july and after riding winchester bay and florence i enjoy coos bay the most. The reason why is the coos bay dunes are the biggest area of the oregon dunes by far. I enjoy duning and covering a lot of ground and you cant really do that much at winchester bay and florence. A day or 2 at winchester bay or florence and you have ridden the whole area. We usually do a day trip up to florence or winchester bay from spinreel but i still enjoy those dunes the most for duning. I guess if you are into drag racing the hill and flats all day(boring IMO) then florence or winchester would be the place to go. Also spinreel is one of the nicest campgrounds that you can dune from. just my .02.

Everyone will have a different answer for this. It just depends on your personal preference once you've tried them all. I live in Clackamas, and for a single day trip, we'll hit Florence, just because it has trails, some good hill climbs, lots of high speed sections, and more jumping opportunities than the other two places. Winchester is fun for the tallest and steepest hill climbs. It makes a decent day trip, but you can do everything at Winchester in a few hours, and then you're just hitting the same spots over and over again. For camping I think either Spinreel or Horsfall (Coos Bay) are the better options....direct access to the dunes, huge variety in riding terrain, some good drag racing at night (if you're into that), and we can usually ride there for 3 or 4 days and not get bored. If you're new to the dunes and want to get a "guided" tour of the different areas, I'm sure any of us would gladly meet up with you sometime and show you around. My next trip is to Florence on the 27th of June. My club will be having a meeting there that morning, and then riding until we are worn out. Click the link in my signature, and you should be able to hook up with many local riders just about every weekend this Summer.

I dont really care for Winchester Bay, I really enjoy Coos Bay, lots of area. Can ride the spin reel side, can ride bull run, you can ride Horsfall side. Just a lot more area to ride in Coos Bay, and still has some of the terrain like winchester, second I would say Florence, then Winchester or Sand Lake!

Coos Bay is nice, but its all about preference. Winchester has a lot of hills and smooth sand.

seems to vary from person to person, but ride any one to long and the other place are a nice change

that's what i would say to i wouldn't turn any of them down.

1) Terrain; Coos Bay and Florence have the most varied terrain. Coos Bay has a lot of wide open trail areas and separate dune fields. Florence has large wide open dune fields and some nice big climbing dunes. It also has trails.
2) Amount of riding area; Coos Bay is the largest area but Florence is more wide open dune fields.
3) Camping; You can disperse sand camp at all areas. Florence has Driftwood campground at the south end, parking lot camping, Sandland Frontier, a privately owned campground and Jesse Honeyman State Park which has direct sand access from Sept. 1st - April 30th. Coos Bay has Spinreel on the north end, Horsfal and Horsfal Beach on the south end (parking lot camping) and the Hauser KOA in the center of the dunes. Winchester has Discovery Point, a privately owned campground with sand access.
4) Size of dunes; WINCHESTER has MONSTER dunes!!!!!!!!!!! Then I'd say Flornce and Coos Bay.

They are all great place to ride and I have spent a week at both Florence and Coos Bay riding and camping.

Coos Bay is the best!

Ditto what everybody has said. They are all unique in there own way.

Winchester has some steep dunes that are pretty fun. The whole area is hilly and with varied terrain. I would give them all a try. You won't go wrong with any of them, but you might like the variation between them all.

Good luck and have fun.
