My daughter rode a Breeze with stock tires from elgin lakes to the choke cherry. You can make your way around the bigger dunes with out much trouble.

You can make it out to Choke Cherry on stock tires.

No worries. The witches eyes are small holes to look out for, and most bowls have easy ways out.

I define the "witch's eye" as a small hole up to 10 or 15 feet in diameter and a few feet deep. They occur from a little wind swirl normally near the crest of a dune. You will see them unless you're hauling butt and not paying real close attention. Usually if you end up in one you can drive out. There are not many of them around at St Anthony.

I did that once, wheelying while riding fast in a direction I knew I shouldn't (going west from Choke Cherry)
dropped off a dune
front pointing down
ground approaching fast
inhaled the entire seat and upper frame into my sphincter
managed to save it
people behind me thought I was a goner.
Yikes!

Sounds like your dad's friend found a witches eye. My wheeler made it out just fine, I dropped about 25 feet and the front tires hit just before I got to the bottom, and the back got down just as the steep downhill turned into flat bottom.
I was thinking all the way down, "Gonna hurt".
And I already walk funny from a triple fracture, old people like me should know better.

Hey guys, I was just wondering if a stock Warrior with stock rear tires will survive out at St. Anthony's dunes. I've run it at Sand Lake, in Oregon, and it did pretty well...but the sand was fairly moist, and from what I've heard, the sand itself is much grainier than it is at St. Anthony's.
I've never been to St. Anthony's, and don't have any first hand knowlege of either the sand, or the trails..Are small hillclimbs a necessity, or do the trails pretty much stick to flat ground? By trails, I mean from the Oasis campground to Choke Cherry.
I bought a set of Sand Stars for my TRX, and I plan on doing some decent hill climbs, but my Wife is a bit less ambitious, and I just want to make sure she has enough traction to not get stuck.

Thanks for the info.

I'm mostly concerned with her getting into a bowl and not being able to get out...what do they call those?...witches eyes or something like that? I suppose you might be able to spiral out of a bowl? Like I said, I've never been there, so maybe I'm just worrying about something that isn't even an issue. I've just heard some horror stories.

How do you define small? I have no idea what I'm looking out for... I'm used to "beach dunes" in Oregon, that don't have anything like this.

My Dad's best friend was at Florence, and had played on one particular dune all day. Then the next day he and his son decided to do a long ride, and when they came back, they came back down the same dune that they had been on the day before.
They decided to race each other to the bottom of that dune, and he almost killed himself when he hit some whoops or holes or something that just "appeared" at the bottom of that dune in a matter of hours apparently. Would this be what you are describing as a witches eye?
To this day, he doesn't walk right. It sersiouly messed him up. ...taught me to always ride an area slowly immediately before doing any high speed stuff.

LOL. Glad you made it. How did your quad look after you hit?
I always carry a pair of pliers with me...just in case I need to pull the seat out of my butt when I do something crazy.

That's all it takes, a matter of hours. When the winds are blowing it can reshape a dune in no time. So just be on the look-out. Witches eyes are a pain, but thats something you'll have to learn to deal with when your playing in the sand. They can appear anywhere and doesn't take very long for them to form. That's most likely what your dad's friend ran into.

Stock tires and sand do not mix. An experienced rider can will any quad to do anything but the less experinced riders tend to get stuck real easy in sand with stocks on.
