For general cruising around in the sand you may want a floating type tire. If you plan on drag raceing I recomend the more narrow tires that dig in stead of spinning on top of the sand. IE- When dragsters use wheely bars it tends to force the rear tire into the ground for better hook up, and mostly to keep front end down no matter how the tire is shaped. I just recently tested this particular theory on a large sand hill with a radar gun. I tested a set of paddles that are flat across (bigger footprint) and I tried a set if paddles with a skinnier rim that ballooned out the tire (to where the middle if the paddle was more narrow) With the (bigger footprint paddle) I lost 7-8 mph on the hill. With the more ballooned out tire It hooked up better and made me go that much faster. I then lent the (bigger footprint flatter across paddle) to my friend that owns a heavy DS and he weighs 340lbs and he complained that they slid around too much when duning on the side of steep hills. a 22in paddle will give ya more of a rounded tire. the 20s are good and all but IMO I think if you had the clearance for a taller (more rounded) paddle I would recomend going that route. I heard sand stars hook up pretty good, and if they are narrow they should hook up real good, but like you said they will dig. I hope this helps. The first pic in my page shows my tires w/ the balloon effect and they have worked for me the best. (for straight drags)

The geckos are so heavy that it would probably lower your rpms anyways, And most any paddle will out-do the geckos unfortunately.. I was testing skat-track extremes. Another tire I would stay away from is paddle masters, they are like putting a xtra 15 lb brick on your axle.

what size did u get and what size rim?

I'm running the 22" Sand Stars on my Baja X and my buddy has the 20" tires. The 20" tires are about an inch narrower than the 22" for some reason even though they both say 10" across. The 22" tires do rub the heel guard though and it has to be trimmed some. But other than that I would recommend the 22" tires for a DS650.

I had read that with the 22" tires it was a good idea to drop down a tooth to 15T. But I found myself with not enough top end in 3rd gear dragging up Olds @ Glamis. The 2nd gear starts with the original stock 16T weren't a problem and I ended up switching back to the original stock 16T. I was racing a piped/filtered/jetted yfz450 with the 15T and found myself hitting the stock rev limiter in 3rd going through the whoops and not having enough top speed and 4th gear was too tall. Plus for me it's hard to shift twice in a drag. Especially when I'm trying to hang on through the whoops hahah. I ended up losing to him by 2-3 bike lengths each time. My Baja X is stock except for a stainless endcap and a 170 main jet. I didn't think that was too bad considering I gave up 20-30 lbs. rider wise plus the extra weight of the Baja X.

The endcap I'm using is a Mr. HP wanna be. It is similar in design and I'm running a 170 main and I'm thinking a little lean after two rides and looking at my plugs. Are you sure you are running rich and not hitting the rev limiter at full throttle? I've found it is a lot easier and quicker to hit the rev limiter now without the restrictive stock endcap. I've just ordered the dial-a-jet system and installed a K&N filter with outerwear. I will probably put back the 165 main and hopefully the dial-a-jet will compensate for any leaness{fingers crossed}. I've read where you are suppose to drop down 2 main jet sizes but I think with the endcap and new filter and maybe the airbox lid off it will do the trick. I think in the future I will look at a new CDI and regulator to see what kind of gains that might have.

I haven't installed the dial-a-jet yet. It's suppose to be here tomorrow and I'll post how the install went and won't be able to test it for a couple of weeks. Here's the K&N part number......BD-6500. I got mine from Alba and it fits perfectly. I also got an outerwear for it.
Here's the website for the dial-a-jet and click the link for dial-a-jet. Dial-a-jet

I've read a few threads where people are using them on their v-force's which are also big and heavy...they bought the biggest one's they make which I think are 22's. They are loving them from I've read.

I bought a pair of sandstars for my DS 20" x 10"
they seem to be a bit narrow and that gives a small footprint and less flotation so they tend to dig in real easy if i have to gas off and on again.
Any one else find this with them or can you suggest paddels that have a wider footprint more suited to the Wieght of the DS

Thanks for the feed back guys
They hook up fine but in some of the real tight turning trails that are steep they do tend to dig if i back of the gas then hit it again
I thought of the 22" to start with but didnt want to have to mess with my heel gaurds or gearing.
i have ordered a set of pro pegs so the gaurds will go now any way, i will just put it down to experiance and sell the 20" to some one with a lighter bike
Which is a shame as i had to get them shipped across the atlantic
Yard bird how is your gearing with the 22"

how do u find the haulers for turning , its real important where i ride a lot of narrow twisting tracks through the dunes and if the front pushes it usualy leadt to a crash
Yardbird I was trying out my end cap today and i found im a bit rich trying to get into full throttle with a 175 im at sea level
is your end cap the same one i have and what altitude do u ride at
Posted by: blue250r
Yeah i pretty sure its rich It was bogging when i was running at say half revs in top gear then opening the throttle full open
Im going to town tommorow so i will see if i can get a couple more jets a 170 and 172 and see how they do.
And you are right about the limiter i hardly noticed it before and now i hit it all the time, what is the limit on these bikes i heard it was around 8k
i Dont have the x so no rev counter but it would be usefull when setting the bike up.
As for the cdi the DS does feel like it could rev more easily but im not sure how the power curve is at higher rpm.
how does the dial a jet work?
you dont happen to have the K&N part number for your filter do you?
good luck on your set up

The dial a jet looks like a good idea good luck with it
Let me know how it works out
thanks for the part #

Update
After getting hold of a 170 jet and trying it it seemed ok (at my house not the beach a little higher elevation) but when i plug chopped it with the 170 the plug was still white so i put the 175 back in and tried another plug chop still ran ok and the plug was stilll way to light.
So it looks like the problem was to lean all along and it was being agrivated when running on the beach ie right down at sea level.
I have e mailed mr hp to get his thoughts on the matter before i go off on the hunt for more jets they are a real pain to get hold of here.
but it just shows the differance in flow with that end cap if moving from a 165 to a 175 aint enough

22x11x10 haulers and they wont rub your heel guards.

annahilater do u remember what the brand of paddles u tested. because i had the gekos for about 2 trips 2 dumont and swichted to kings which are a straight paddle and man whata diffrence. i didnt have a radar gun but i could tell it was pulling harder at a hrigher rpm. i willtell u what i wish i had a radar gun it sure would be cool for testing products.
