I'll be @ Ocotillo Wells the whole Thanksgiving week starting on Monday and coming back on Saturday. Can't stand the traffic coming back on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Glamis will be too crowded I'm sure with plenty of ruts.

There is still room for families at glamis. You do not need to park with the crazies. Just dont park at wash 5,6,7 or even 15. Go well beond those to past wash 25. The closed section begins at near wash 40 or so. there is a lot of good riding at that southerly limit. You can ride along the closed area markers where there is a good trail through and to the dunes. we are going to stay at (near) wash 37. This is a good family area. We went last weekend and saw a 4 ft mule dear.......i know they all have 4 feet.

Also a short cut to get there.....on hwy 78 at glamis store going east go over railroad tracks and just ahead 1 or 2 hundred feet turn rt on well graded dirt road (i think it is called ted kipf rd?). go at 40 mph down road and pass boardmanville turnoff. keep going until you see a tower next to rr tracks (this will be 7 or 8 miles or so from hwy so keep an eye out, you can see it before the turn). Just past this tower there is a crossing over the tracks....paved. This will not be for large motorhomes though. Most trailers are ok. go to the road on other side of tracks (this will be near wash 40) and go back north a couple of washes to your choce camping spot. If you do not know wash numbers, look at rr bridges in the washes.( they are painted on bridge ). I hope this wasn't too long.

Thanks everyone for your help!!

I do not know if i would try that big a trailer. I have seem motorhomes go over. It is kind of a hump at the tracks. I only have a 14 foot trailer and its no problem. Maybe you could have a spotter to help. I wouldn't want to get hung up on the tracks! At least check it out on your bikes first.

If you do get to check it out, and if you have any kids try climbing the tower. It was used to check for illegals riding north on the train. It is very windy when they pass.

Did you check out the crossing over the tracks? I saw some larger motorhomes going over it. We also went to the glamis store on that road on our atvs. Fast trip! Did you also check out the "survivor camp" at about wash 33? its in the heavy trees and looks cool in there.

15 Years ago I camped at Olgilby, not to far from the canal, we had to let the air out to 10 lbs to get our 4wd's and trailers out to the quiet camping, good luck. Can you still camp and ride on the very north tip of the dunes, north of hy.78 ?

If you look at the map at http://www.sw-center.org/swcbd/goldenstate/images/duneclo2.gif it shows an area called Mammoth wash is open for riding. Unfortunately this map is over 3 years old so a little investigation is probably in order. The map is at least a handy reference comparing areas in relation to each other.
