Late October is REALLY risky for Idaho. I personally wouldn't take a chance going so far to get froze or snowed on.
Have you thought about Little Sahara, UT??? Much warmer but no hookups although they do have water there if it isn't turned off by the time you get there (OCT 31 or so it gets shut off and restrooms get locked up for the year).

Fires are allowed, you just need to dig a pit. After you put the fire out they (owners) require you to douse the already put out fire with water then fill the pit back in. When I was at Sandhills in June, we got Full hookups, and if I remember correctly you could pay a little extra for water hookup.

You pretty much have it right. Its up tp you. Gene is a jerk. Why not check outhe new BLM area? its pretty nice, right by the big hills, free, by the lake (pond). I was there last weekend, its nice.

My understanding is that fires are allowed in approved fire pits. I think you might have to have you fire containing device checked my the ranger. I called the blm and they told me this a while ago this year. I would stay at Desert Oasis. Sand hills is a trip to the big hills. Although the dunes are fun over there, they are smaller, but you can ride them fast. Its about a 30 min ride straight from SH to Thunder Mountain, then another 30 or so to Choke. So to do the whole thing its 2 hours ride just to get there and back.
It might be cold!

guys, im taking a big trip from TX to St Anthony's the end of Oct... My big question is to stay at Desert Oasis or Sandhills, heres my situation:.. in either case ill need full hookups for a travel trailer in tow..... Ive read info on this forum and the campgrounds websites and this is what ive learned:
What i like about Sandhills is: Grass and Trees, Right in the center of Action, we could see people dunning while we were resting and the familiy could see us while we were dunning... i like the 10pm quite time...
What i dont like about Sandhills: far from choke cherry.. my modded DS sucks gas bad and i dont want to run out!, the owners can be dicks, the restrooms/showers are terriable.. My TT have shower but not enough water for all my friends to take showers if they cant hack the public showers
What i like about Desert Oasis: Nice owners, Nice restrooms/showers, closer to big dunes
what i dont like: Cant see dunes right around camp, no grass/trees
Now remember all my info i second hand info.. ive never been..
I want your advice.. as for now im thinking im going to try Sandhills, just let the wives use the TT showers, the guys can hit the publics, keep the dog on the leash and spend minimul gas at choke cherry so i dont run out on the way home..
lets here any advice i havent thought of thanks guys

The campgrounds told me the temps would be like zero degrees, "yahoo" says the average temp for Saint A's on Oct 25th is 69 degrees.. what gives.. now i may be changing my plans to Glamis.....

Idaho that time of year is cold, cold, cold!!! You don't want to be hauling in the snow from Cedar City to Rexburg. Little Sahara Utah is going to be cold too. Glamis is a long haul, but if you want to enjoy the ride I would go there, less chance of winter at Glamis.

Oh ya, Gene is a jerk, you can have fires just no marshmellow fights, and the showers over by the check in are much better. We usually have a wife or someone drive over to the parking lot by the pond(dust bowl in July) with a truck loaded with gas that way we can play around a little and don't have to worry about running dry..

You will probably need to extra carry gas from Sandhills to do Choke Cherry. Sandhills is nice for the grass and trees especially if some in your group don't ride as much. The dunes there aren't bad either, some decent hills.
From Desert Oasis to the dunes is a short trip out a path which is maybe a hundred yards from the end of the camp area, 2 or 3 hundred from the full hookup spots. Not a problem.
From Sandhills to Thunder where the real dunes start is kind of a long ride. Once you hit the big dune part, you won't want to ride in the other areas. Desert O is much closer to that area.

Maybe you should hotel it in Rexburg and unload at the BLM parking lot each day. I do that quite often. Only takes 15 minutes to get to the dunes from the hotel. Easier drive not hauling campers.

Utah is closer and warmer. But St anthonies shoud be fine at the end of october. I'll be there next week myself. But I live in Utah so I'm at sand mountian 30 weekends a year. We still go year round, even new years eve. Might as well go to utah and ID on the same trip. Why not? As long as you're up here, sample the goods.

Jet, From Sandhills its 5mi to Thunder Mtn. another 5mi to Chokecherry.(GPS checked). You cant see any riding on dunes from camp.Smallest dunes are in the Sand Hills area, better for beginners but if you want big dunes close by stay elsewhere. Weather can change day to day. I stayed AT Sand Hills mid June,70's one day,40's to50's next w/ snow flurrys, and windy. Also make sure you rejet for 4200ft (camp) to5000ft. for best power. hope this helps.
