With the lid off you should be running "lean". I'd re-jet or put the lid back on to be safe. When my Banshee was stock with the lid on I ran 210 mains, lid off, K & N, reeds it runs with 310 mains. The difference on a completely stock ATV with just the lid off probably isnt huge, but I'd image it's got to be running lean in the middle & top.

it is ok just remove the water drain so any sand can flow out.

I ride with no airbox and it never gets thru(sand).......

One of the best upgrades when riding in the sand is an Outerwear. Keeps most of the sand off the filter and especially out of foam filters. I run K&N and feel that it does a better job of keeping sand out of my engine. I would think that sand will eventually work through a foam filter.
At the very least, look at an outerwear. About 15 bucks I think.

Ya take it off, just make sure the air filter and carb boot is seated good. Sand will get everywhere anyway, so just make sure you wash it good after every ride in the sand.

I also ride with out a lid, no signs of sand getting in carb.
Might want to rejet it though, Might not hurt anything without jetting, other then performance.

Apple, if you are still nervous, I know GYT-R has a duel stage foam filter. That would add a little extra protection as well.
