92 db? you gotta be kidding me! does a stock 400ex even do that?
Posted by: Dill
I wonder how many big weekends will have to be killed by the enforcement of this before the local business cry foul. I'm already considering changing my 2 planned trips to Silver Lake to Idaho or maybe Little Sahara.
Posted by: Dill
if they want us out...what is going to replace off roading as the money maker for that area? Scenic dune walks? haha right.
Posted by: Dill
nice to hear some of you 4 strokers are getting your sound down. No offense but the 4 strokes ARE usually louder than the 2 strokes. I just don't know how I'm going to do it on my 400R and my 250R..
Posted by: Dill
I drive about 10 to 11 hours...so it would be a bummer not to get in. On my 250R I have plenty of options..but the 400R uses an ESR centermount pipe. commie bastids, heh.
Posted by: Dill
it actually doesn't..its just the peace of mind of NOT having to drive through Chicago

that is not good news.....
thanks for the heads up though.

A friend bought a tester. I want to see what my machines are at now even though I do not think they will pass. I was told by the owner of Drakart that my Formula Cross is 105db. I don't know how that is tested though. The 3000-3500 RPM for a 500 might be my saving grace. Maybe lower for a 583. Beter yet, maybe it will be classified as a dune buggy and get tested at 2000.
They list 250 and 500. What about a 350 and a 400? I'll argue for the 500 RPM. My FL350 spun around 7000 stock so 4000 is higher than half of that. Of course it spins 9000 now, but that is not the point. At least it won't be part of my point. My Pilot spins 7200 now. I don't know what stock was, maybe 6000.
I will try to get them all classified as buggies, but it is probably at the discretion of whichever DNR guy decides to test me.
zillaman500, I agree that the goal is to weed people out of the dunes. What really cracks me up is that many of the "enviromentalists" live on the private lake on the one side of the dunes that was made by building a damn. How many critters do you think lost their lives when their nests were flooded? How many fish died down river when the water level declined?
The FMF turbine core silencers are a lot quieter, but I don't know if they will make 92db. The last I heard, it was 95db for late model stuff and 99db for machines older than a certain year. I was going to have to make 94 with my '89 Pilot and 99 with my '85 FL350.

I think it was LRD that had what was basically a double silencer for the 250R. Second silencer went across the back of the machine after the first one. Claimed that it actually dynoed a fraction higher in HP.

Oregon has a 93db limit on the dunes. I thought that was restrictive! 92db, a stock Raptor just squeaks by. No chance whatsoever for any aftermarket pipe to be legal.
Posted by: 95Warrior
Check out Newspaper Story 92 dB! I was hoping for 94 dB at least. This came out in yesterday's Oceana county's newspaper.

will the dnr accept bribes? so is it going to be all stock state park or what?
Posted by: atc86r
gonna send a lot of people to the badlands. they must want indiana to make all the money.
Posted by: atc86r
probably to expensive but that ferry across the lake saves some time.
Posted by: atc86r
so is that new esr silencer also a spark arrestor. i see silver lake requires spark arrestor. later wil.

From what I've heard the DNR is being forced into the soundtesting by enviro-nazis. Chipping away, like they always do. I don't think the DNR wants to limit or see a decline in attendance. Silver Lake has got to be a HUGE revenue source. Think of the thousands of dollars which pour into there over a weekend in fees plus the additional state campground fees. No way they want to lose that kind of revenue. I think the key will be who they have manning the decibel testers. If it's some greenie, they'll probably be a real you-know-what... Also I don't see how they can have a tester there 100% of the time. We go late Oct. every year and NEVER even see a DNR officer on the dunes. We'll see...
Posted by: zillaman500
Unfortunatly I think that's what they want. To shut the ORV area of the dunes down! The enviro-nuts have been trying to shut us down for years! The locals complain about the noise, which in my mind is like buying a house next to a pig farm and complaining of the smell! Then trying to put the farmer out of business! It's a shame but I think our riding day's are numbered at Silver Lake, if not done. I don't know how in the heck I am supposed to make my quadzilla meet 92db! I don't even know if it would make it with the stock system or not.....probably not. When you think about it, other than a handfull of house trailers on Fox road and and a few homes down past the chassis shop and Jeep rental, there really aren't any houses that would bothered that much by the noise. When you are in town in Mears you don't hear the engines of the machines in the dunes. The majority of houses in the area are even further away than that. The most noise in the area comes from Val-Du Lakes camp ground at night! I think the db thing is just a cover for something else, really! It would cause to much of an uproar if they banned us completly from using the dunes, so they just make it so we can't abide by their regulations and aren't able to get in that way. I know some of you west coast duners have db restrictions, what are they and how do you deal with them. If anyone know's of a siliencer for a quadzilla and/or a 250R to meet 92db let me know. Thanks!

What you have to remember is that the enviro-freaks greatly out number the people who make lot's of money off of us. When you think about it, with the exception of the hotel on the lake, the businesses who make money off us are small. You've got a half dozen campgrounds, yes, but these half dozen campgrounds don't employ more than about a couple dozen or so people, max. A few mom and pop restaurants, which again don't employ more than about a dozen people or so. Duneland, 5 or 6 employees, same with Appletree or the chassis shop. Jeep rentals won't be effected by this and the state camp grounds will fill up with people with out a problem even with these rules. Most of these jobs are minumum wage summertime jobs anyway, so while there are a few little mom and pop establishment's that do very well off of our visiting the dunes in the summer, the community as a whole doesn't really benefit that much. So I don't really think money is gonna be that big of an issue, yep, a few of the mom and pop shops may or may not struggle, does the DNR care? Quite doubtfull! A year or two ago a guy got busted riding his modded 250R through the trails in the Manistee national forest, loud exhaust, no spark arrestor. He got a ticket and chose to take the issue to court where he explained to the judge that he and other's with similar machines and setups had been riding at silver lake for years without incident, and wanted to know why state law's were enforced on some state land, but not on others. So that is what this whole thing stem's from. At least according to the DNR officer I talked too.

i think we better wait and see an official word from the DNR, i was sure i had read somewhere (i thought their website) it was going to be 94 db., they're running out of time, we shall know soon enough,
but i do know this, if they wont let a stock raptor in, im gonna be pissed, someone should know the exact level, and it would seem like they would have some leway on that number, but who knows, it is the DNR,

Everyone: If you go to the article hyperlinked above there is a forum to voice your opinion about the new enforcement of the 92db regulation. I posted a response, you should too. Keep it clean and try to make a convincing argument. One word of profanity and it will never see the light of day.
I too have purchased a db meter and have done some testing. It is going to be close. I am going to get a tach so I can be sure that I am in the 3-3.5K range. I'm not driving 4.5 hrs. with my Yosh pipe only to be turned away. I will let you guys know a number as I get it. As far as a stock Raptor, DW lists it at 92db stock. We can only hope that their testing criteria is different than that of the DNR.
Go and voice your oppinion.

I'm hoping! I haven't picked up a tach yet, but it will be soon!! I have been getting this machine DUNE READY. The Badlands are nice, but the moguls are everywhere there and it's hard to do any real high speed riding. I WILL BE AT THE DUNES THIS YEAR!! BR>
BillDS650, did you have to add the quiet core insert in your Yosh pipe?
Posted by: GregV
Well, I think I am going to be OK. At approx. 20" away from the the tip of my Yosh pipe I am around 89db then when I rev it up to 92db it is runing at a fairly high rpm. I still do not have a tach to make sure, but initial testing is promissing.

Since you plan to use your ORV at Silver Lake State Park, there is some additional information that may be useful to you.
At this time, there is a proposed Land Use Order of the Director that would regulate sound testing for the scramble area at the park. That Order is not final yet, but the proposed version calls for the use of two separate test procedures. The procedures are developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers. The test procedure proposed for motorcycles and ATVs is the same procedure that is in the ORV law, which is SAE J1287. There is a separate proposed procedure for all other ATVs, which is SAE J1169.
Once the Order has been implemented, you will be able to get additional information from the Parks & Recreation Bureau of the DNR, or from Silver Lake State Park. They will probably have a final Order in March or April.

I have been hearing about a 20" rule or something like that. I purchased a db meter and my pipe is equipt with a spark arrester. I want to make sure that I won't have any problem getting out on the Dunes this summer. I have a 4 1/2 hour drive. I usually go there 3 to 4 times a year. I hope that last year won't be last, there isn't anything comparable around at all.
Thanks

Her is a link to the sound test done by OOHVA http://oohva.org/

GregV I did some test on My DS650 with an Graydon Proline system. I got it done to 94 dB at the test RPM. I think It can be done but It might cut done on performance over a straight though pipe.
Posted by: BillDS650
GregV I was working on my own quite core till my money dried up. I was working on a GrayDon Proline full system till it fell a part.
Posted by: BillDS650
GregV I got a little tach/kour meter from a Yamaha dealer for about $50.00. Works out great for testing and tracking hours for service.

I seem to miss these conversations until there about done, but i'll add my 2 sense. I duned SL for 3 years and everyone of those years i've gone the first week in april. Theres never a DNR officer even there. Personnally i think there going to crack down on the big holidays and weekends and let the people play on the weekdays, i hope i'm right but nothing would surprise me anymore.
