I'll be there The opening weekend. As time gets closer we can figure something out. Lets dune!! Im pumped to dune, It's been since september.. I'm getting the ITCH. About 3 months away, And im already countin down the days.

In MI it's all we got (for dunes) so we LOVE IT! It's 450 acres of sugar sand on the shores of Lake Michigan about 45 minutes north of Muskegon. Required for entry: ORV permit, $16.25; motor vehicle permit, $4 per day/#20 annual both quad and tow vehicle; and an approved dune flag, $17 at David Allen racing which is just across the street.NEW FOR 2002 is mandatory sound checks, nothing over 94 dB gets in. This has been a state law for all 3000 miles of state trails, but has rarely (ever?) been enforced. Check out www.oceana.net for more info on the area such as lodging, camping, etc. We try to go for at least two weeks a year plus as many weekends as we can squeeze in. So far my best time is 2 hours 43 minutes from my driveway to the parking lot. The riding area opens April 1 and closes October 31. Off season rates are usually available throught the end of June and start back up after Labor Day. Check out some pictures of BansheeBrads trip at http://users.nky.net/~brad/SilverLake/index.htm

Weidman is northwest of Mt. Pleasant, so he probably means east. We tentatively looking at one of the last weeks in June, 2002. Still off season rates and still pretty quiet, just before the July 4th crush. You guys still running stock pipes, or are you going to try to get an aftermarket setup in?

Posted by: 95Warrior

I'm currently running 20" 9 paddle Skat-Trak Haulers on Douglas .125's with the stock tires on front. I had Skat-Trak Mohawks on the front, but the Haulers pulled them up too much to maintain decent control.

I hear ya on the cold weather riding. We were there for 4 days in October, and on the last day we FROZE. Winds were about 30 mph out of the west, temps were upper 30's/lower 40's and cloudy. After that trip I'm thinking about a set of GYT-R handguards to keep my hands out of the wind. Even with two pairs of gloves on, they were numb. We were always 3rd gear pegged because with 30 mph winds, the sand was always smooth and flyin' was a breeze. The beach was wrecked though, too much water. The trip was a blast, 125 miles of riding in 6 hours (thanks TrailTech).

If you can, plan on getting the ProDesign air filter setup and Dynojet kit. It adds noticable power throughout the range and doesn't increase the sound level

i went a few times last year on saturdays and sundays. ive heard that during the week and off season dnr arent even there. anyone know the details?

Hey guys
I go to the Oregon dunes regularly and we have been dealing with noise for some time. In Oregon they use a db meter attatched to a string to give the set distance from the exhaust, then they have a inductive(clamp on) tach they put on your spark plug wire and I beleive they check you at 50% of your stock rated redline (Correct me if I'm wrong) they carry a book that shows this.
They usually give about 2 db leeway for equipment error. Most of your regular silencers will not pass the 93-94 limit. +Compression,no air box...usually=more noise.
We have a company here called "cascade Innovations" they make fancy seat covers and billett stuff, they also make the CSF/X silencers. We have found these to usually pass noise and still allow built motors to develop alot of h/p. their silencers work with most banshee pipes, on other types get the silencers and have a muffler shop help with the stinger tube(usually pretty simple). Hope this helps.
Noise limits are kind of a pain, but if it helps keep the dunes open I'll do what I have to !!!!!

The info I got after talking for 20 minutes long distance with the DNR people and getting a lot of "wait, let me see" answers, is that they're going to use the "20 inch test", like in Oregon. That means a decibel meter pickup 20 inches straight back from the tip of the muffler, at a 45 degree angle. They sometimes use a string attached to the sound pickup to standardize the distance, and avoid measuring every time. Those from Oregon that have been busted by this system please feel free to join in.

I have an industrial db meter, and I find that if I stay seated on the bike and keep my legs close to my pipe, it lowers db output by 1-2 db. I also find that I get extra noise from my straight intake (no airbox). If I put the airbox on, the db level doesn't change at the rear, but the "perceived" amount of noise by someone standing to the side or front of the bike is noticiably lower. Maybe enough to keep the ranger and his tester away? don't know.

Looks like it will be another thing to worry about this year.

imadunatic, are you going on good friday? i was wondering if it was open on good friday. thanks .

Posted by: powerslide

I was just wondering if anyone has ever been there and how was it?

Posted by: modquad

Hey Greg, like one of the others posted, there's a 1/2 throttle reading or somewhere around there. I just picked up one of those Radio Shack meters last week and was wondering also what they were going to use. Does anyone know???? Last year was my first dune trip out there (sigh, needed to take a moment) and I hope I didn't buy paddles for nothing...hmmm maybe Pismo. Hope someone can answer the meter Q.

Thanks,
Ken

Thanks Imadunatic, I did see that, but just wondering what kind of equipment the DNR has. I think these digital units auto-calibrate themselves, and I think someone earlier posted a margin of error that's used. Just looking for all available advice from those of you who are exposed to these people more than the few times a year I am. Thanks for the info.

Do those CSF/X silencers have a USFS spark arrestor? I'll see if I get time to search for a website. How ironic, my pics from Silver Lake are in the ATV Sport issue on it's way to the newsstand.

Alright fella's I have a situation that I need some of your opinions about. I am from Ohio and have been riding quads for years. I have ridden at several state parks, raced a little motocross, but mostly play riding. But, above all my favorite place to ride is of course Silver Lake State Park.

Now, here is my situation that I have. I currently have a FMF Powercore IV slip-on pipe on my 400ex. From what I have read in Dirt Wheels magazine, the pipe that I have puts out I believe 100dB's. However, it does have a screen-type U.S.F.S approved spark arrester. I know that the new law taking place this year at Silver Lake is a maximum dB limit of 94dB's. My question is....do you guys think that I will be screwed do to the fact that my pipe is 6db's over the legal limit? Do you think that rangers are seriously going to check everyone and bust every machine with an aftermarket exhaust?

See, last summer I made it up to Silver Lake twice. I remember as you trailer your vehicles into the parking lot that there was a sign posted about the new law going into effect starting in 2002. I personally questioned one of the DNR people and told them my situation and explained to them that I have a U.S.F.S. approved spark arrester. They acted like I wouldn't have any problem with the new law. From what they told me, this law is to help stop people who ride in the park without spark arresters.

Anyway, and help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hey GregV,

Thanks for all of that info but I am having a hard time understanding about the new law according to what you mentioned above. I have a FMF Powercore IV slip-on pipe for my 400ex and am wondering since I do have a U.S.F.S. approved spark arrester will I be okay to use it in the dunes? I think my pipe puts out somewhere around 98-99 dB's verses stock is like 89dB's I think. Do you think that I will be okay? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

<< Hey 95 warrior, before you take a trip there, post it, it would be kinda cool to meet up with fellow duners we've never met except online. im only about 90 minutes due west of s.l. and love it, i try to go whenever the boss (uh...wife) lets me. >>

Post before you go, I am about 2 hours from the dunes and would love to meet up with some more people.

Imadunatic- Do you mean due EAST?? SL is on the water to the west. Do you own an island? hehe I am in the detroit/ann arbor area.

Posted by: Eq

R either of you going to be there on the opening weekend?? April 5-7... This will be my first time ever there on a quad. Used to take my buggie up there, but it is gone now.

Pipes - I am debating on pipes for the first few times I go. I am thinking of the FMF Fattys w/Q series silencers, Toomey T5's with hushkit or just screw it and get the CPI Inframe drag pipes. That should put me at about 93-95 with the fattys, hope I pass. If I dont put them on right away, I am dropping one size tooth in the front for a little more pick and power for the hills.

Posted by: Eq

It is 94dbs at 3500rpms. They give you 2-5% leway. They may not be checking at the gate, but you can bet your ass that they will be stopping people in the dunes.

I'd like to hear all I can about Silver Lake too!

I'm planning a major dune 'trek' across the states in late spring and I'm trying to figure out my stops. I'll be as far east as eastern Kansas (see family), wouldn't be much to take 70 across and then head up there... hwy 80 back home... I think i'm talking myself into it

Posted by: dunechick

just to make you jealous... there's nothing better than a winter spent riding the pismo dunes on a sunny day! (sorry, just couldn't resist!)

Hope i get a chance to check out silver lake this year

Posted by: dunechick

you'll just have to put in for vacation and head west! BR>

no, i live out on a boat, wandering at sea, just me, and my quad, and a dog named boo!
what i wanted to say was that silver lake is due west, but it made for a good laugh anyhow, thanx for helping me out 95 warrior,

Also one thing ive noticed the last couple of years is that the dunes are nice and sharp (perfect for airing it out) before the 4th of july, after that they are great for trucks, somewhat boring on a quad, Unless you go after a wind storm. If you're not into jumping then anytimes a dune good time to go.

and i think an hour and a half due west would almost put me in wisconsin, (man i like cheese)

95 warrior, have you had your Raptor to S.L. yet? If so do you run paddles? What kind?

As far as pipes go I'll be stock,(isnt the Raptor 93db. stock?) just sold my 2000 scrambler to buy a 2002 Raptor and im waiting for warmer weather to buy one, its break in will most likely be in the dunes, im hoping to have it before Good Friday, thats our annual First Trip of the Season (Carharts a must) Last year it was about 45* sitting still and much colder when moving but at least the sun was out.

Anytime somebody is going, just post it here, it might be convienant(?)

Talk to ya later.

Posted by: imadunatic

if i have my quad by then, we usually go on Good Friday anyhow, whats a few days earlier? Im sure my riding buddies will be up to it, i'll let you know ahead of time when i get my raptor, as long as ive got a quad im ready to go, but be sure to pack warm clothes, unless its one of them freak years where its 65* (wouldnt that be awesome) any how the next few months will tell.

Posted by: imadunatic

yeah, until april we will just have to read about them famed winter duning tales out west, ah well, Aprils only a few months away!!!!

Posted by: imadunatic

ah yes, that emotional support we were looking for.

Posted by: imadunatic

if it was me and i was traveling that far to go to silver lake, id take my stock silencer (if i had it), who wants to drive that far just to get an hour of riding time in and then have to leave?

its kind of a crappy deal, but if it helps keep it open, im all for it

Posted by: imadunatic

gregv, have you checked at the DNR's website ?

i know that ive read it somewhere, something about 45* angle, 45 inches away or something along them lines, i know they have it all spelled out there somewhere, but i;ll be damned if i can remember exactly,

id start there and see if you can email them, if they dont have it on there website.

Posted by: imadunatic

ive never been there on the weekend, and the DNR is always there (not that its a bad thing, there was a couple of kids going the wrong way-on purpose in the dunes- and got busted) if you just obey the few simple rules and pay attention to what you're doing they wont even look at ya, not even if you're doing a one-wheeled-wheelie right next to them all they way around the circle,

seriously tho, did anybody else happen to see the nice looking blonde officer that was there in 2000, she wasn't there in 2001 and the guy that replaced her wasn't nearly as good looking,

Posted by: imadunatic

have you looked at the dnr's website, modquad?

they have most of it spelled out there, not sure about what meter they are going to use but it is at a 45* angle at 20 inches, half the rated RPM's for the motor

Posted by: imadunatic

damn, i just reallized good friday was 2 weeks ahead of schedule this year, whats up with easter being in march anyhow?

so i did lie, they dont open until the 1st of April, sorry about that,
im hoping to make my first trek this year in may sometime, when its about 65*(hopefully)

no matter when you go, post it you never know who might be going, and the more the merrier in my book, when i do go i'll post it,

Posted by: GregV

With Silver Lake ALEDEDLY starting noise restrictions to 92 db he is worried that he may have to make a quick pipe/map swap to get into the park. I guess we will see.

Has anyone herd if that is really happening and is it for sure 92db??

If so, is it 92db's at an idle or at some other rev point??

Posted by: GregV

Do you know how they check the db rating? I almost bought a sound meter that reads db' up 140 at Radio Shack. Do they use a similar device to check?? Also, do they hold check it at idle or do you have to rev it up to a certain level??

Posted by: GregV

This is what's on the DNR's web page. 94 db NOT 92 db

I know the sound level for ORVs in 94 Db. Where do I go to get the sound level checked for my ORV to make sure it is quiet enough?

Answer
You may be able to contact your local law enforcement agency, (city, county, township) and have them check your ORV.

The wording in the ORV statute is as follows. "Unless the vehicle is equipped with a spark arrester type United States forest service approved muffler, in good working order and in constant operation. Exhaust noise emission shall not exceed 86 Db(A) or 82 Db(A) on a vehicle manufactured after January 1, 1986, when the vehicle is under full throttle, traveling in second gear, and measured 50 feet at right angles from the vehicle path with a sound level meter which meets the requirement of ANSI S1.4 1983, using procedure and ancillary equipment therein described; or 99 Db(A) or 94 Db(A) on a vehicle manufactured after January 1, 1986, or that level comparable to the current sound level as provided for by the United States environmental protection agency when tested according to the provisions of the current SAE J1287, June 86 test procedure for exhaust levels of stationary motorcycles, using sound level meters and ancillary equipment therein described. A vehicle subject to this part, manufactured or assembled after December 31, 1972 and used, sold, or offered for sale in this state, shall conform to the noise emission levels established by the United States environmental protection agency under the noise control act of 1972, Public Law 92-574, 86 Stat. 1234."

This means that for a motorcycle or ATV, you should use SAE test procedure J1287, June 86.
