i have a few questions too... i'm planning a trip there this summer.. mid to late june for a weekend.

1- is there a day use fee for the parking area?

2- does my washington state ORV tag count or do i need to buy any other permits??

Posted by: dual-sporter

next question: do they have sound cops like oregon does?

if so, what is the Db limit and how do they do the test?

I'm Buddahs brother and it's well worth the drive. The dunes are only about a half mile wide but probably 12-15 miles long. If you camp at the Sand Hills Resort, the campground, you will not make it to the end of the big dunes and back on gas w/ a two stroke. Sand Hills is at the north end and the big dunes are on the south end. Sand Hills is 12-15 a day for full hook-ups. The guy is a pain like my brother said. You need to get off the North Rexburg exit and head eight miles west and you will run into the Sand Hills resort. Turn left at the flashing light 1/3 mile before the Sand Hills and go down 4.5 miles and thats the closest parking to the big dunes. No hook ups there. They have restrooms and are going to pave and put hookups in this year. We went in mid June two years in a row and it was 75 PERFECT degrees! Sand is very very soft when it's dry.

I live 10 miles from the St Anthony Dunes. The BLM is fixing up the camp area by Egin Lakes. I have heard that they will start to charge a fee after the improvements are finished. The old man at the Sand Hills Resort is a pain in the butt but the guy at Egin Lakes is okay. The sheriffs office and BLM have made a big effort to have more officers on hand. It has really improved things. It has been a lot safer and knuckle heads can't speed through the parking lot.

No sound cops!!! You can be as loud as you want.

Your photos are excellent. Especially the black and white ones. I am using one as my wallpaper if that is okay.

Is the person hurt in the photos part of your group? What happened? Were they hit by someone or did they flip over the edge of that dune?

Thanks

I'm guessing your referring to St. Anthony Idaho. I've been there a couple times and it is definitely worth the trip. The bowls are huge with lot's of room to open your machine up. Choke Cherry hill is extremely steep with a very short starting area. There's not as many places to jump compared to Little Sahara. I ride mostly at Little Sahara Utah and the sand is much coarser at St. Anthony. They're improving the campground site as well with water hookups and paved parking. The other campsite is a long ride away from the big bowls and the old man that runs it is a pain in the butt. You better have your dog on a leash and obey the speed limit. There is also a couple of small lakes from the mountain run off and it's nice to cool off on a hot day. I'm not sure how many acres it covers but it's big. Weather wise it's best to go in May and June.

Hey, gar you forgot to mention a website... MINE!!! (Sorry)

Anyway, St. Anthony kicks... Yes, if you stay at the Sand Dunes "Resort" it's a pretty long ride to the big dunes. If you stay at the BLM campground you are right by Egin Lakes and the start of the big dunes. If you prefer hillshooting and big bowls stay at BLM but if you like a lot of smaller dunes with lots of jumps maybe you'll like the resort better. BLM has some trees on the back part for shade and it is getting improved soon. The resort has showers/laundry/electricity/grass and shade but you pay for it.

I like St. Anthony the best of all the places I go and it has always had great weather when I was there. Altitude is right around 5000 feet so jet accordingly. Bring paddles or you will NEVER make it through the big dunes; too long and steep. Also, when you go there try to hook up with somebody who knows their way through the big dunes. They are scary if you don't have somebody to lead you since you have to cut over one dune razorback into the next over and over to make good time through there. At the least, just follow a fast moving train through the dunes, it's a blast because you have to keep cresting the razorbacks from dune to dune on nothing more than faith in the guy ahead that you won't fly off a cliff.

You have to have a whip flag and OHV sticker to ride there. Check my site for more info, pics and directions.

imaduantic, give my site another try; just click the ENTER button on top to get into the main part... I'm having some FTP problems with my site so It's been a little hard to update lately.

Gar, I'm DYING to get out to the Oregon Coast. I'm definately gonna do it this year, probably later in the summer. I'll be on here looking for advice and riding partners when it's time to go. Tnanks for the offer, i'll remember that when it's time to hit the Oregon sand.
