You might have added some rebound adjustment somehow when you removed the shock. Just reduce the rebound adjustment. If the 88 is the same as later models the adjuster is at the bottom of the shock in the form of a two slotted screw. Back it off the number of clicks you wish.For xc or trail you may wish to have some rebound added to prevent rear end kick-up in rough terrain, allowing the wheels to stay on the ground & hooked up. Motocross usually demands faster rebound thru whoops to enable the suspension to return to normal for the next whoop.
Just as a guide, I run 10 clicks up from 0 rebound in xc or fast trails. Total adjustment should be 20.

Thanks for the post...it was the damping clicker. all is good now. Just waiting to get my cylinders back now..this thing will fly once it is done.
