One of the 400's is a great choice! These are easy enough to ride that a beginner can handle one, yet an experienced rider won't get bored.
The EX and Z are pretty similar in terms of handling and frame geometry. The Z has slightly better suspension, and being water cooled it is faster. Both are high quality, and both engines are bulletproof.
I like the EX for tight trails. It has an engine that doesn't mind being lugged down and ridden slow. I like the Z for faster more open trails, and wide open country.

If you are going to ride mostly track and open country, then the 450 is the better choice. Just take it real easy at first, and don't try any jumps until you have lots of saddle time in.
On the other hand, if you are more of a trail rider and will rerely go to the track, then one of the 400's would be a better choice.

I was kinda wondering the same thing. img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif" border="0">
For a first quad, the 400ex would be better for you than the z. Just a little less maintenance to do.

Easiest and cheapest way to change the color is cover it with mud and dirt.

While the KFX 450 is a nice quad, they seem to have a few problems that need to be worked out on the motors.
The DS 450 seems like an even better choice.

The 400s have a good amount of power. They're more for trail than tracks.
450s are at home on tracks. They are lower, wider, and a little bigger (may be good for you).

no offense but i would feel sorry for your suspension if you weight 240lbs (or was that the other guy) and hit 50 footers, you've got 80-90lbs on me and i just cant see a stock 400 absorbing that much force..... get a ds650 or renegade or kfx700 and aftermarket shocks, they are heavy tehmselves so they wont complain as much, and they will actually have enough B@lls to pull you around at a fair pace, kfx700 is a great trail quad, tons of torque, but its also pretty fun on the track (just a bit heavy so its harder to get unstuck)

the yfz feels smaller than the z400 though, the z400 is really tall 46" tall, 46" wide aproximately

i bet the ds450 might even have a stronger frame than the kfx450, afterall it has no welds which weaken the metal

we also know that welds can break... im sure that can am was smart enough not to use really thin and weak bolts for the ds450
if it is weak i guess the pros will be the first to find out when they case an 80 foot double.
But at least you won't need gusset kits for the ds450, you'll be able to swap parts of the frame for stronger pieces and bolt it on, no welds at all.... the kfx450 will significantly gain weight when gusset it because they frame will get weaker when you weld it requiring even thicker gussets
and if the bolts are really weak, that should be a cheap replacement, you might be able to get thicker lockbolts and thicker pieces of the frame and just bolt it on at the dealer using the 2000$ wrench or whatever they use

well the kfx450 is also first year, but i guess the kfx aluminum frame has been used for years by atk and cannondale already, so it might not be too bad (is it true the bumper is WELDED to the frame??????
I'll stick to replacing bolts while the rest is busy welding and uglifying their machines with burn marks that the welder makes

ok i am 14 6'1 and about 205-210lbs and for my birthday my dad is going to get me a quad but not exactly sure what to get though i really like the 400ex. Near my dad is yamaha suzuki and honda dealers so pretty much anything is up for grabs
Posted by: Woody1
ya but what about the z400
Posted by: Woody1
lol
but im probably going to go with the 400ex since there is someone i know selling theres for about 3500 with alot of upgrades and im not going to be going that fast since i will most likely be going on really tight trails (since most people i know ride dirtbikes
but the guy i knows 400ex is yellow and i hate that color and i was wondering if there is anyway without replacing all the plastics (which sounds expensive) to paint it? or is it too much trouble for something that doesnt matter?
Posted by: Woody1
and also what about the raptor 350? or is the 400ex/z400 in a completly diffrent league
Posted by: Woody1
ok but idk i might have to go with a z400 since the only true dealer close to me is a (my house not my dads) is a suzuki/yamaha dealer
Posted by: Woody1
well it doent matter anymore if i get a z400 since i will probably get a 07 which is available in black
Posted by: Woody1
ok well now heres the issue...
after spending the weekend with my dad and going to MotoTownUSA where they held the northeastern national extreme stunt comp. (streetbikes doing wheelies stoppies and many other stunts) which was F**KING COOL AS HELL i learned that the indoor track also allowed quads to practice/race on it which they just started doing and after seeing a couple of 450's i am wondering if i wanted to get one of them but i know they have alot of power behind them and require some experience. i also found out from my dad that money isnt really an object when it comes to this with him he wants me to have exactly what i want and to be happy. but another reason why i am looking into the 450's is another question... if i get a 400ex/z400 will i be able to clear most of the jumps withought casing it stock? when we first got there there was a guy on what looked like a honda 450r or a 400ex im really not sure becuase they look so alike now on the track and i dont know if he was just going really slow and not trying to make the jumps completely or if he was trying and didnt have enough power to make them.

and also my dad is going to be getting one to so were probably going to get a really good deal

the sooner the better!!
Posted by: Woody1
well im probably going to go to the track just as much as the trails since theres a whole bunch of trails and a track less the 10 mins from my dad but also im not going to be racing just on the track practicing probably with some friends and my dad but i just want to know if im going to have enough power to make all the jumps withought having to modify it right out of the dealer

ya no thanks....
Posted by: Woody1
i dont know where you got 240 but i way 205
Posted by: Woody1
well everyone has told me so far that 450's are not good for the trail becuase there high reving machines

the z400 is a much better desert quad. but on trails the 400ex is a little better. i whould buy the z400 if i were you.
07 Raptor 700r
K&N air intake
white brother pro alumium
pc3 efi
sand star and hauler paddles
durablue elimnator x-33 axle
ishock 5500 front end.

you chould get a graphics kit to change the look
Posted by: bigned1904
on the track it is not so much the engine in the 400 lacking power for jumps but the suspestion for them is not going to be a good and will not do nearly as good as the 450s. BTW if you do not like to do maintenance i whould not get a 450 they need a lot of it, also the 450s are not going to like tight trail riding b/c there engine liked to be reved. but if you want one i whould get the honda 450r(probaly the best 450 for trail riding)

to paint it get a couple cans of the color spray paint you want, paint it, let it set for a day or so, and then clearcoat it and you won't have a problem unless you get wd-40 on it. it took me 4 cans of black spraypaint to paint my warrior(i painted literally all the plastic) and one can of clearcoat. total=$5.83 including tax

im 14 too,15 in a few weeks and am 245lbs and a little under 6 foot and i ride the 400ex(stock) hard with no problems, tons of power, great quad i ride on dirtbike tracks and it works fine.
the farthest ive gone is a 50 foot table top and it still holds up great!i also do trails too
Posted by: chets440
im bigger than you are...of course it also has it disadvantages....
i can guarentee you 100% satisfactory with a 400ex especially if your new to motorsports
(ive been riding bikes since i was 5 then i got an atv after i broke my collar bone)
because the 400ex has no problems with it unlike some other quads that things break and the 400ex goes around 60-65 when you first get it so its perfecto
if anyone tells you anything different than a 400ex theyre on crack because it a perfect quad
Posted by: chets440
the honda is better relibilty and better engine
Posted by: chets440
lol i guess either 400 would be a ok choice, but id still go with the honda, and everyone in my family is big...i could easily bench press 200
Posted by: chets440
you cant paint it and graphics is the best way to go
what wrong with being huge?
Posted by: chets440
stick with a 400 you wont be too pleased with a 350 i dont think
Posted by: chets440
okee doke im sure youll be happy with it
Posted by: chets440
youll have enough power with any decent size engine to clear a jump,a big part of it is by the rider, the bigger engines(450s)are just going to turn quicker, gain speed a little faster, and are a bit lighter.but if your going to do trails get either 400 because the 450s arent too nifty on them
get the z400 er 400ex
Posted by: cdsgunn
just wonder why nobody has sugested the kfx 450 is excellent on trails and has tons of power for jumps but is not stright out the gate as fast as the yfz
Posted by: cdsgunn
yes the ds 450 should be a great bike but im worried about the frame strength until proven id be leary
Posted by: cdsgunn
no welds but its lock bolted and we all know that bolts break even lock bolts
